Fire breaks out after explosion at Okla. oil refinery

An investigation is underway into the cause of a massive blaze at a oil refinery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Updated at 6:09 a.m. ET: A blaze broke out early Thursday after an explosion at an Oklahoma oil refinery, authorities told NBC News.

A Tulsa Police Department spokesperson confirmed to NBC News that it was notified about the fire at the HollyFrontier refinery in west Tulsa at 2:21 a.m. local time (3:21 a.m. ET).

The refinery has its own fire department, which was battling the blaze, and local authorities were on standby in case they were needed, the spokesperson said. The fire appeared under control and was being allowed to burn out, according to NBC station KJRH-Tulsa.

The explosion and subsequent blaze caused one smokestack to collapse, according to a report on local radio station KRMG. The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear.

The local and corporate offices of the Dallas-based HollyFrontier Corp. could not immediately be reached. An employee who answered the telephone at the Tulsa refinery declined to comment.

The flames reached several stories into the air immediately following the explosion but had since died down, according to a KJRH reporter on the scene. The glow from the fire could be seen from several miles away, KJRH reported.

No injuries have been reported.

KRMG reported reported that local residents stood outside their homes and watched the flames rise into the air.

A witness named only as Cody told KRMG that he and his mother were "freaking out" over the blaze.

'Not ideal' weather conditions
Weather conditions for fighting the blaze were "not ideal," according to AccuWeather, which reported temperatures of about 94 degrees with wind gusts up to 21 miles per hour.

HollyFrontier says its Tulsa refinery has a crude oil capacity of 125,000 barrels a day.

HollyFrontier describes itself as "an independent petroleum refiner and marketer that produces high value light products such as gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel and other specialty products."

HollyFrontier says it markets its products principally in the Southwest, Pacific Northwest and Plains states.

The company was established by a merger of Holly Corp. and Frontier Oil in 2011. Holly Corp. was ranked number 431 in Fortune magazine's 2010 list of the largest U.S. companies.

At the time of their merger, the Holly and Frontier companies totaled 440,000 barrels a day of refining capacity in their five refineries, according to The Wall Street Journal. That represented a relatively small portion of the total American refining capacity, which stood at about 17.6 million barrels a day, according to the newspaper.

NBC station KJRH contributed to this report.

Lets see how long it takes for the price of gas to go up

About 5 minutes before the fire department was notified. That's how the alarms work at the refineries. You pull an alarm, the signal is sent to a speculator and they call for the fire truck.

Yep, this morning the price went up 10 cents.. My wife stopped to get gas on her way to work at 5:55am and the store opens at 6am.. She watched them come outside and change the sign as she waited for them to open and turn on the pumps..

You can't Blame anyone except those people who make millions and don't contribute or make anything to contribute to society and the economy [commodity speculators]..

We have plenty of refining capacity and crude oil but the companies that do this have long term contracts with China so China sets the price.. Besides, every month our dollar looses value so in actuality you are not paying any more for it.. You are just working harder for less..

I don't care much for the speculators (Day traders) either, but it's their money. Every time they invest, their assets are at risk. One bad turn could cost them a bundle also. If you like the Millions they make do a little speculating yourself.

And we give billions of aid to foreign nations that do nothing in return when we could use that money to finance new refineries so the american economy is not held hostage to situations like these.

Probably not! The cost to build new refineries in this country make that it cost prohibitive, they would never recoop the cost without doubling or tripling the cost of the user products. How will you react to that. Hug a tree today.

Gas stations where I live must have gotten the word Tuesday night of an impending blaze at a refinery. Yesterday morning when I was leaving home, I noticed our gas was up 9 cents a gallon from Tuesday night. No lie there, full truth. It usually jumps 8 to 10 cents a gallon UP at one time, than they 1 and 2 cents you back DOWN again, if ever.

The truth of it is we need regulation of the refineries because they realize that's the easy way to control prices when they can't control supply. It's time for Congress to get involved and investigate heavily any fires, maintenance shutdowns, etc. But then the investigators will be paid under the table to defraud the public and America is now more corrupt than the former USSR !!

Not really paul. They risk only dimes on the dollar. That's the problem. They can buy millions of dollars worth of oil for very little money.

Excuse for prices to go up was my first thought when I saw this headline. Regardless of if this actually affects the refineries production or not. Hell could've been a house fire 5 miles away or "nearby" as the media would put it, and prices would go up. Nothing but a rigged carny game anymore.

K - correct but they also aren't a commodity controlled by others. FF won't go away tomorrow but developing these sources (specifically solar) can put some control back into the hands of the consumer among other things. Its a win win situation, just have to separate the media and political BS from it all.

The fire was in a diesel part of the plant. The price of unleaded should not be affected by this in any way.

Yea right to think that they won't raise gas prices because of a fire on the Deisel side of the plant!! Wake up they will cause they can. AND WILL.

G. Bud If the Republicans are trying to trash the Economy Then answer this. Why is it that Obama's head of the EPA trying to kill the coal industry to where it cant even export their product overseas. 1000's of job lost.

Also why is the same person working to shut down the only 2 maganese mines in the US. This mineral is what is needed for making steel in the few steel mills we have left. Another 500 or so out of work.

That will force the steel mills here to buy Maganese from China and will put them in a greeat disadvantage with the respect on the price of steel. Out come more jobs lost.

On top of that this person that runs the EPA is a career Beaurocrat with no Scientific credentials at all. That person 's last job was as an AID to a Democrat Senator. Sounds like a Political Payoff here with no care about the People it effects.

SO WHO IS TRASHING THE ECONOMY AND CAUSING THE LOST JOBS. WHO IS PUTTING OUR ECONOMY AT RISK? AND WHO IS MAKING SURE OUR JOBS GO ELSE WHERE OBAMA THATS WHO.

By the way how does it feel to be discriminated against my Obama and the Democrats when it comes to Obama care. They excempted all illegals from having to buy health care or pay the tax too. That means we get stuck with the tab for them.

And how does you feel about the illegals filling false tax returns to the IRS stealing over 4.5 Billion dollars each year from the Honest tax payers and the IRS wont go after them either. DOES IT MAKE YOU WARM N FUZZY INSIDE KNOWING THAT THE AVERAGE CITITZEN CANT GET EQUAL JUSTICE AND IS BEING TREATED LIKE A 3RD CLASS CITIZEN WHILE THE ILLEGALS HAVE THE RED CARPET ROLLED OUT BEFORE THEM

Well we now have had our annual refinery fire. Seems that way since GWB became president. As far as the current pres goes I think he only wants to have gas prices go up. Thinks that farms and rural America can run on public transportation.

On another note why are we now exporting the results of our domestic oil well production? Just wondering.

    It Is Time

Your sentiments about solar are nice but very unrealistic. All power generated is highly taxed and regulated. As for wind turbines, because of regulation it can cost up to 100 thousand to install one that will completely power 1 household, where's the savings in that? It is only cost effective if you are a corporation and build a wind farm to sell the power to the grid, then instant power back up is required if the wind dies. oh BTW- Have you ever seen the photos of exploding wind turbines? Its quite common.

    Okicize,

Based upon a $3.00 gallon of gasoline, the average break-down is as follows.

Gasoline Retailer $.01 cents per gallon
Oil Company $.08 cents per gallon
    Refining $.29 cents per gallon
    Marketing/Distribution $.32 cents per gallon
    Taxes $.59 cents per gallon
Cost of crude $1.71 per gallon (delivered)

This is just one that I found when I did some reseach on the subject. The numbers do vary, but even ABC will admit that the price of oil and oil companies have very little effect on the price of gasoline!!

    LEFTISTREPORTING

You left out how the EPS has stopped individuals from dredging for Gold in Cal. The EPA say IT MIGHT huyrt the stream. Now I don't know if you are aware how dredging works, but it is like a little vacum that sucks loose stuff off the bottom of a creek and passes it thur a series of 'screens' and then returns the watewr to the brook/river. No Chemicals are involved.

In the process of doing this, the miners also catch all the heavy metals including mercy which have been pumped into the brook/river. The EPS has placed such restrictions on them they say it is not worth it.

Now here is the fun part. The EPA is hiring a firm for several hundred million dollars to go into these streams and do the SAme THING to remove the heavy metals,,, And if these companies find gold along the way, well all the better for them.

The EPA has told several electric dams in Cal that they needed to have new Clean Water Permits tyo countinual operation. They made these 'standards' for these permits so high that they cannot be reached. Thus the dams have to be removed.

The EPA has taken an interest in these dam beacuse they say the Coho salmon cannot reachy their native spawning ground, even tho they KNOW that the Coho are an introudced speices and have no 'Native' spawning grown.

It will cost several billion dollars to remove these dam and the electric rate for all those that are supplied by these dams will increase greatly.

P.S. Hydro-Electric dams do not pollute the water.

    K. Truant

I have a friend that live totally off gride. The house is Solar powered which is great when the sun shines. It seems the power created during the day gets use during the night.

And when ther are several days in a row with little or no sun, then the generator must be run... Oh, by the way... the Gen works off Gas.

      #1.27 - Thu Aug 2, 2012 12:11 PM EDT

K Turant - I have and while I'm ok with wind to an extent I think more focus needs to be on solar, it is the superior option of the two, IMO. Not sure about that cost you gave but a typical household will average probably around 30-35kWh used in a day. There are systems much cheaper that can handle that. Yes still not a drop in the bucket for most but it is getting better and there are some good finance options out there now that can have you paid off in few years with free power from there on.

Moreover though, my point was even if you are grid tied and the utility has net metering in place (or not) you don't have to produce all your energy just some of it which still puts some in your control. Bottom line it is getting there and would get there faster if we would stop with all the political BS. Do we really want China to be the solar king while we carry on mostly pointless arguments and let keep control of our energy sources in the hands of a few? Which includes not friendly to the USA countries. I know I don't.

Blended approach with responsible regulations and ever greater and increasing push towards improved energy efficiency and investment in alternate energy sources, of which solar should be the flagship.

Big oil makes about 10 cents on every gallon of gas. Federal government about 13.

Well, let's say you're right. How do you estimate the long term damage to the environment by fracking, drilling offshore with it's risks, (see, BP, Haliburton and the damage to the Gulf of Mexico.) We have been forced to increase the amount of unnatural chemicals into our children's foods due to non-potable water. We feed our cows, chickens, hogs, turkeys, etc. hormones to get them to the market sooner and precautionary antibiotics as a prophylactic measure.

I'm a reasonable guy, but I look at my grandchildren and think: "We've got to do better. Was this planet this filthy when I was a child? Nope, it wasn't. Was it nearly as dangerous? Nope. Point is, whether you're a Conservative or a Liberal--or anywhere in between, you should be doing better to the generation that we're handing a $16 Debt, a failing infrastructure, and 2 political parties that are openly purchasing stocks with inside tips, passing laws in favor of clients of lobbying firms that line up at the Congressional offices to hand out the cash.

I just want to leave my 4 grandchildren with breathable air, drinkable water, a functional government, and a reduced debt. At the pace things are going, they will see none of these things.. Let us all do better, collectively, but especially government.

Sounds good, but right now the farmers are asking the big corps to decrease the amount of corn and soy and thing so they can suipply the public markets with food.

The Corps won't budge. With the drought we have had in the 'Corn Belt' is so bad that the farmers cannot even reach the contracts they have with these corps.

So when Food prices go SKY HIGH don't blame the Farmer. Remember, Fuel to run the farm equiptment, fule to run the trucks that deliver it for processing, then fule for the trucks that trnasport it to market.... Well I guess you an see how it works.

The poster didn't say to tax us more, but to divert these wasted tax $$ to a better cause. In fact, I think the oil companies would be glad to pay for their own refineries, if the government wasn't stopping them.

Gotta thank the repugs for that, not the environmentalists. They & their minions, the teabaggers promote more off-shoring than anyone else. You have to give these smaller companies like Holly, Frontier, Valero, & a few others credit for trying to revitalize and upgrade refineries that the big old oil firms let fall into disrepair.

None of these small refineries were deemed large enough or profitable enough for the "Texas Oil Men" like dubya and his cronies. I work in the business as a 3rd party inspection agency, but send hands into the vendors of equipment upgrade and not the refineries.

I have many good intrepid friends who work in and inspect these old small facilities. May the Gods Bless them. I just pray that no-one got seriously hurt, maimed, or crippled with this one.

The oil companies don't want new refineries as they would lose their leverage on shorting petrol supplies; supply and demand dictates prices.

This country is going just a little too far right for the average household to survive.

I certainly hope President Obama gets a second term because the alternative could be a disaster for working families in the USA.

Just FYI, there was a moratorium on new refineries being built that has been since the 70's. That is why there aren't anymore than there have been. The current ones can expand on land they have, but no new ones are going up.

One refinery going down for a time (because of this) will not affect gas prices by that much, maybe some localized effect, but nothing countrywide.

Hopefully no one got hurt, that is the main thing.

oh and one more thing, unless this company has drilling capabilities elsewhere (upstream oil) they aren't making THAT much money in comaprison to Exxon, Shell, BP, etc...upstream is where the big bucks are, not in refining (not to say they are in the poor house exaclty!)

I believe that when these people speak of the government, they mean entities suchas the EPA. Many refineries have been shut down because of the new clean air standards on low sulphur diesel. It would have cost more than some of these refineries are worth to bring them up to certain government stamndards. I am not saying that we shouldn't do these things, it is just an ROI thing for the oil company.

Ever notice that the news agencies never talk about net profits for oil companies? It is nearly always a gross number that they give. I was in West Texas when oil went to $6 dollars a barrel in the 80's and the area was descimated. The government didn't come in and bail anyone out. Many lost millons. No one was cry about the low price of gasoline then, so I have little simpathly now!! Sorry!

              flnobody:

I beg to differ with you, but have you ever looked at the new EPA rules? It would take BILLIONS just to build one refinery.

To keep it short, I will just post part of his plan... If anyone what the whole thing cantact me and I will send all the links that back this up.

Obama, the oiliest president in American history, has done everything in his power to destroy the oil industry in America, virtually shutting down production in the Gulf of Mexico, off our continental shelf, and in and around Alaska -- anywhere he could, except on private land. Give the man another four years, and he'll have more "flexibility" in stopping that, too...among other things.

While claiming that America has only 2% of the world's reserves, he asks, why drill? Then he says drilling is not the path to lower gasoline prices. The 2% figure is a perfect example of the man's ever-abating affinity for the truth. It counts only the reserves from wells currently pumping. If Bill Gates leaves his house with $2 in his pocket, does that mean he is poor?

Using today's technology, America has 1.4 trillion barrels of recoverable oil, according to the Institute for Energy Research. This is enough to meet all of our energy needs for more than 200 years, without imports from enemies. Of course, it is of no use if we are not allowed to drill for it.

              Improved Offshore Drilling Plan
On Wednesday, the House passed the Congressional Replacement of President Obama's Energy-Restricting and Job-Limiting Offshore Drilling Plan, which would replace the president’s proposed offshore drilling plan. The House passed plan will increase access to areas for leasing in the Gulf of Mexico, Mid Atlantic, Southern Pacific, and the Arctic regions. This plan increases of the number of lease sales over the next five years from 15 to 29. These lease sale areas are estimated to contain vast amounts of oil and natural gas resources, providing new opportunities for increased domestic energy production and job creation.

The president’s offshore drilling plan would hurt American energy security and continue our dependence on unstable Middle Eastern oil. President Obama’s plan locks up 85% of our taxpayer owned offshore areas for leasing and energy production. The plan only offers 15 lease sales, mostly limited to the Gulf of Mexico, the lowest number for any leasing plan for any administration from Jimmy Carter through today. His plan clearly does not meet the energy needs of America.

The House passed plan goes farther than that of the president as it will grow the economy, create jobs, lower energy prices, and enhance our energy security. This legislation is an integral part of House Republican’s "all-of-the-above" approach for American energy

but have you ever looked at the new EPA rules?

I know, obama has been president for over 30 years. That's why they haven't built a new refinery in over 30 years because of the "NEW" epa rules.

Obama, the oiliest president in American history, has done everything in his power to destroy the oil industry in America, virtually shutting down production in the Gulf of Mexico, off our continental shelf, and in and around Alaska -- anywhere he could, except on private land. Give the man another four years, and he'll have more "flexibility" in stopping that, too...among other things

And that is why the production of oil has gone up every year for the last three years right? That's also why oil (diesel, jet fuel and heating oil) is now america's number one export. Because we have such a shortage.

The Interior Department announced Tuesday it has approved another Gulf of Mexico deepwater drilling permit under a series of beefed-up safety standards. That was as of 03/11.

But the administration has stressed that it is working diligently to process applications, but it will not issue permits until companies can show they are capable of containing a massive well blowout.

I'm sure you feel they don't need any safety standards. The last administration didn't.

Ethanol is a joke. Without the government subsidies it would cost more than gasoline and is far, far less efficient. We need to produce corn for food or grow something else. Then find a better way.

"It's spectacular. I don't think any of us could have fathomed it," said Kirk Fordham of the Everglades Foundation. "We really are entering a new chapter in the history of the Everglades."

The deal, which calls for Florida to buy U.S. Sugar Corp., including the land, its sugar mill and refinery and its citrus orchards and processing plant, exists only as a signed statement of principles now. State and company officials gave themselves 75 days to wrap up the details.

The deal will put a company that has farmed the Everglades for nearly 80 years and produces 700,000 tons of cane sugar a year out of business and its 1,800 employees out of jobs. "Our business will be done in six years," chief executive Robert Buker said.

Brazil is considered to have the world's first sustainable biofuels economy and the biofuel industry leader,[4][5][6][7] a policy model for other countries; and its sugarcane ethanol "the most successful alternative fuel to date."[8] However, some authors consider that the successful Brazilian ethanol model is sustainable only in Brazil due to its advanced agri-industrial technology and its enormous amount of arable land available;[8] while according to other authors it is a solution only for some countries in the tropical zone of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Africa.[9][10][11]

We have a refinery in Superior, WI, it never catches on fire or blows up causing the price of gas to go up like they do down south. So redirect the Keystone pipeline, create the jobs here and we can keep prices down, because we don't blow up our refinery. But hurry before Scott Walker recreates the Texas school system here.

Many southern Right to Work states are prone to this. Paying workers low wages and cutting out safety class programs to save money, is exactly what you get in a Right to Work state. Fact: Right to Work states have a higher rate of on the job injuries and accidents. When you pay someone cheap labor and no training these are the stories we will continue to hear.

You people absolutely amaze me!! Multiple members of my immediate family, as well as friends, are employed and were involved in the aftermath of this fire. It is the automatic reaction of the media and the left wing society to point fingers and blame current conservative policies. To think that a facility would do something like this on purpose, or by direct result of any workplace law is obsurd. NOT A SINGLE PERSON in that plant would put the employees or the facility in harms way on purpose. Refineries have some of the strictest and most enforced workplace safety regulations in the nation for not only the employees but also the outside contractors. Stop for two seconds and think about the fact that s*&! happens in any line of business and I am sorry that when your computer crashes because you made a mistake or something like 115 degree heat caused an issue on the unit that it doesnt make the national news. Not everything in this world can be blamed on political agendas...Let's all stop and take two seconds to use our brains here.

justredd- call me what ever you want, cause I know the truth about Right to work. When you pay workers less money for jobs that are dangerous, you will end up with higher rates of accidents. What kind of workers do you think you attract at minimum wage levels. Fact- and you can look it up- 1. Non right to work states had a lower % of their population at or below the minimum wages than did RTW states. 2.Non RTW states had a higher household income than did RTW. Non RTW states had a higher % of their population graduate from high school than did RTW. And so on and so on.

Right to work is for FREE LOADERS...it allows a person to gain my wages, my pension, my healthcare benefits, and my representation w/o paying their fair share to keep these programs going. Being in a NON RTW workers have the freedom to not join a union, find a company that doesn't bargain with the union. And since unions only hold 10% of the market share then there are 90% more jobs that are not union that you can get hired at. No simple truth is they want all the perks w/o paying. FREE LOADERS.

Tons of info on RTW if you dared to look at it.

In the "fire service," in most populated cities it's a known fact, it's easier and cheaper to burn it down, scoop it up, and move it out, than it is to hire workers to tear it down, piece by piece, removing hazardous materials in full protective gear, that gets very costly.

My stimulus plan is to go green and use solar energy for all our commuting needs. Almost done that with our Nissan Leaf. Once we get longer batteries in the next 5 years I'll be there. Every American should be doing their duty to add FREE leased solar panels to their roofs and drive free. Mine produces an average of 50 kWh a day and it only takes 18 of those to fully charge the Leaf which has a 24kWH battery but discharges only to 30% of full. So I get 100 miles on those 18 kWh and can charge it 3 times a day for a 300 mile daily pollution free drive.

Homeowners have no excuses the leased solar equipment pays for itself several times over.

It's only when Americans wise up and decide to cut the oil spigot off that will be free of this BS game the oil industry plays.

That's great you bought a car made overseas, in turn costing a fellow american his job. Do you understand that solar panels on your roof is a very costly investment in the front end no matter how much you save in the long run. I guess if everyone was given millions of dollars like Mitt, we could all afford to pay the upfront cost of going green. But no it is just he opposite, companies looking to raise profits even more cut the workers wages and benefits. Kinda like Bain capital bankrupting Armoco steel on purpose and then hundreds of workers losing their jobs and pensions. Then the company reopens under a new name and ownership and hires workers at minimum wage with no benefits. You can't expect the larger numbered middle class to be able to afford these luxuries. If we all made a living wage and not minimum wage then you might see a greater number of people doing as you did. But we all can't be job creators now can we.

Yes America, there is a wealth gap. Seven of the top ten wealthiest members in Congress are Democrats.

The results are based on a new study released today by the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics. The Center did an analysis of the financial statements filed by members of Congress for 2010 income and net worth.

This revelation of extreme wealth by Democratic politicians is completely contrary to the public image of the Democratic Party. President Obama has castigated “millionaires and billionaires,” suggesting they are evil people, largely Republican or conservative. The issue of the Democratic Party as the millionaire party has not yet made it into the mainstream media. But the facts are indisputable. Democratic members of Congress tend to be wealthier than their Republican counterparts.

I never said anything about republicans being richer than democrats, their all richer than I am, and I really don't care were they are hiding their money. What does bug me is people who have money and then use it to crush hundreds of good paying jobs to make a profit, while leaving a community in ruins. And my point was when the larger group which is the middle class is struggling they can't afford new cars, solar energy upgrades, and were struggling due to corporate america "Bain" running good companies into the ground and demolishing wages. I've told the whole story about Bain running Armoco Steel into the ground for a 4 million dollar profit. I met a man who worked at armoco for 30 years, he was fired w/o severance pay, w/o a pension, and w/o benefits. This man was in his 50's and his wife has cancer, and when he was let go he could not get insurance for his wife and his pension was gone. Now he was left in his 50's to go and find more work, after he gave 30 years of service. Mitt and the shareholders left with millions in severance and sold it a bankrupt company for a 4 million profit. So I guess your fine with people making millions at the expense of others? I could care less how rich they are but don't claim to be a job creator and good for US business when I've seen first hand what they call job creation.

USA is doomed to follow in the footsteps of the USSR.

Congress is so corrupted it will never take on the banks or the oil industry. They own Congress. So "'By the people, for the people, of the people" has perished from this earth to be followed by "By the Corporations, for the Corp's, and of the Corp's"

A record string of trillion dollar profits has been followed by record low taxes--the NET taxes on US corporations has fallen to an all time low of just 16.5% !!

And you wonder why we can't balance the budget and cure the deficits?

And they still aren't hiring. Go figure.

I guess they're waiting for Mitt to give them more tax breaks before they move out of the country.

Here we go again, Gas prices will go up in the Whole of the U.S. because of one little fire in one refinery. The oil companies in this country need to be Nationalized and I mean NOW. Enough of this crap. They raise the prices so that we us less because we can't afford it, and then they take what we can't afford and sell it Overseas. Why the HELL doesn't our government see what the Hell is going on here????? And OUR Government continues to give Huge Tax breaks to these #@!#$$%^%#@$%% Oil companies on top of their Huge profits. The oil pumped out of the ground in the U.S. belongs to the Citizens of this country, not to some Oil Company that pumps it out of the ground. Wake up people.

                                Trazan,

                                Sorry wrong,

Based upon a $3.00 gallon of gasoline, the average break-down is as follows.

Gasoline Retailer $.01 cents per gallon
Oil Company $.08 cents per gallon
                                Refining $.29 cents per gallon
                                Marketing/Distribution $.32 cents per gallon
                                Taxes $.59 cents per gallon
Cost of crude $1.71 per gallon (delivered)

Do some actual research on the subject. This is just one that I found this morning.

BTW, if they take away tax breaks and increase the cost of doing business, who will pay for that increased cost? Do you think they will just absorb the costs?? Have you priced a new car or truck lately?

OMG I am LMAO you've got to be kidding me! Gas prices have gone up due to demand, it's summer and people take vacations and more people are back to traveling again. Do you people even realize how many jobs the oil and gas industry provide? You have no idea how much money it takes for R&D in th Oil/Gas industry. We should be building more refineries and stop being so dependent on foreign oil!

We don't need More refineries. The oil companies are producing so much Gasoline that this country is one of the Biggest Exporters of Gasoline in the world. The oil companies raise the prices here so that we use less and then they sell it overseas. Wake up.

Amazing...just amazing...Have Americans suddenly become mentally incapacitated? Big Oil is grabbing as much as it can. Taxpayers be damned. This is that fine old blowhard attitude of the Big Oil Biggest Big Daddies. What is it you people don't get about the world of options? You do have options if you want to come down off that oil addiction.

Now that millions of particles of petrochemicals have been spewed into your air streams by this single oil fire...do you want to blame those mysterious illnesses that occur in clusters on the president too?

I'm sooooo fed up with excuses for human beings looking to take the spotlight off themselves and dumping on the president. If Okies are too stupid to create new industries, how is it the fault of anyone else but them? If Okies can't get off their oil addiction and the only jobs they are qualified for are in the world's slimiest slimeball industry, that doesn't say much about their intelligence levels.

There ARE alternatives today. In fact, one of the major reasons Big Oil is exporting more heavily at present than any other time in history is that many highly intelligent, rational, common sense Americans have settled into those alternatives quite satisfactorily. They know the stupidity of owning a gas guzzler that saps $100 a pop at the gasoline stations. Don't these loonies ever do the math? At the end of a month half of one whole pay check is gone for those in Middle to lower income brackets. If butt ends are as big as long horns and only a supersized gas guzzler fits, you have more problems than just blaming it all on the president.

Get real, Gas guzzler or not it doesn't make any difference. Cars are getting more miles per gallon than ever and the politicians see this so what do they have in mind for the reduced Taxes they get from the sale of gasoline?? They are working on Pay as you drive. A gadget will be placed in your car so that you will pay a half cent, maybe a penny or more for every mile you drive. So buying a more fuel efficient car won't do Zip. And that penny a mile will be just a starter, you know how government works. It will go to two cents a mile then three then who knows how much. It's coming, they just have to work out the details.

No okies are not too smart. They allowed their state to become a Right to Work for less state. Which has sent OK into turmoil. There manufacturing jobs have diminished by 30% since enacting RTW over 10 years ago. Now they are left with low paying jobs with little to no safety precautions due people stating regulations hurts growth. Well regulations cost you corporate bums money but deregulation is costing middle class americans their lives, and that is not acceptable at any cost.

Now, let's see how many ignorant, "let's all live in a world of butterflies and smart cars" people we can get on one news strand to make ridiculous accusations and use big words to make themselves look "intelligent". Instead of assuming you understand what you are talking about why don't you all do a little research of your own on this refinery and what the affect it will have on you and the environment. I bet you would be amazed if you can find it in yourself to look further than the one article you read here or the extremely liberal media and its one sided views. Or better yet, why dont you all form one society and take all your "grand ideas" and let us ignorant okies know how it works out for you in 10 years.

As far as no safey regulations.....That is just spewing ignorance. Safety regulations and EPA regulations abound, and rightfully so. Refineries are truly dangerous, but our public highways are far more dangerous.!!

I don't see building and construction jobs moving oversea's anytime soon. What i was saying was that companies in OK do not give their employees proper safety training which could lead to injuries. And this is true in the building and construction.

TXhorseman--Sure there's little to no unions in Texas, and that's probably why all of the middle class jobs pay next to nothing. Then to add insult to injury you have these so called small business sub-contracting their work to illegal workers who are paid in cash to avoid payroll taxex, workers comp., health benefits, taxes that you city operates on.

I know a young man who lived in KC and moved to OK and is still currently living there. I'm just frustrasted for he was electrocuted a couple of weeks ago working on installing a security device. He was given no formal training on electricity or general construction. They also are paying very low wages with no benefits. Ever since the RTW was inacted their wages have been decreasing and plants are moving to other states. I'm just tired of companies paying low wages and endangering workers at the sight of profits rising.

Sorry for the slame on OK, I do know a few and there not ignorant just stuck in the middle class grind.

                                        kcroofer,

I appreciate the apology. My only point to you is you cannot group all manufacturing/labor jobs into the same category. The refinery requires their operators to pass an admissions test prior to even being considered for the job pool after which they are trained properly. They are also good paying positions with considerable overtime opportunities. These guys do work VERY hard with crappy hours and swing shifts. However, they are able to provide comfortable living situations for themselves and their families. I grew up with a dad that went to work there straight out of high school and is still currently there after 35+ years. He is no longer in the operations side as he has worked his way up the ladder but I do understand the process. No one in my family is a member of the union. Though there are companies that do not train employees properly and take advantage of them while not doing so, this is not the case in this situation and seems kind of irrelevant to the point of this thread. Just as we cannot keep grouping politics into one big general category, the same goes here.

Seriously ewent? Do you drive a car? Do you heat/cool your house? Do you use plastic items to store your food, water etc. Just where do you think all of these items come from? Over 50% (if not more) of everyday items we use are petroleum based; so you should be thanking us "dumb Okies" for our hard working men and women who work in this slimy industry.

How do you think your groceries get to the store, you think the "food fairy" just pops in and delivers them? No they are there due to the trucking companies that buy the diesel to run their trucks.

I'm just thankful that no one was injured and from what I have seen/heard this morning it was a very bad fire. Kudos to the Holly Frontier Refining Fire Department for keeping it contained!

When I was in Tech School in the military, we had a guy that we called Zipper Head. He could repeat almost word for word what the instructor had said during class, But when we went to the field to actually pratice what we learned. He was Totally Lost. Are you a Zipper Head?

Well, here in the NW (Washington) gas prices are still WELL above the national average and now this will send us to over $4 a gallon, AGAIN!!! Cause I'm sure the gas companies are losing money left and right now. : )

20 bucks says it's bullsquat and just another in a long line of deceptions for our super awesome oil industry to use as yet another excuse to jack oil prices.

OMG you've got to be kidding? You think they intentionally set the fire? We've had refineries get hit by lightning all the time; so they must have planned those as well? Give me a break. So Troy1101 let me ask you this; I'm assuming you are using a computer, IPad etc. What do you think those items are made from? Do you use ink pens, how about your phone(s)? whether they be cell, cordless or a landline; they all have plastic in them. Plastic comes from petroleum products........um let's see do you use a disposable razor? Does your milk come in plastic containers, peanut butter jars, salad dressing jars, just stop and think (I know this will be difficult for some of you to stop blaming others and think for a minute) of all the everyday items we all take for granted that are produced using plastic which is made from petroleum. Do you fly? Ever wonder where jet fuel comes from? **rollseyes**

And I see from your last line you have no value of human life!

Americans consume petroleum products at a rate of three-and-a-half gallons of oil and more than 250 cubic feet of natural gas per day each! But, as shown here petroleum is not just used for fuel.

Proud2BaVet has got it listed down correctly. People don't realize that oil is not only automobile fuel, power to light up, cool and heat their homes and offices. Almost everything that we use or personally own has a byproduct of hydrocarbon processing. Not against looking for others sources of alternative energy such as wind but wind power is limited to generating electricity and does not yield byproducts to create things. The only process I know (working in this business) that can produce byproducts from air is air separation from wherein liquid oxygen and argon are produced to support industries and medical facilities.

Someone was talking about China being a leader in solar power but that's not true. They are so hungry for oil that they are now supporting African countries in exchange for oil and are having a row with Southeast Asian countries over the Spratlys which is oil rich.

Oil and gas operations including refining and deepwater exploration is dangerous business. This incident will be scrutinized for safety not only for the owners and operators sake but the first and foremost is the public's safety.

Every other industry would have to have fire suppression systems automatically react to an suppress the fire. Oil facilities and petro chemical refineries seldom have automatic fire systems even though they are some of the highest risk installations in existence. They have different rules than everyone else because of what they are and who owns them. Now we get exposed to hundreds of tons of toxic smoke expelled into the atmosphere and get to pay to repair the oil men's folly. And to you idiots that want to somehow make this a partisan issue: it is not. It is a problem that transcends ones politics and directly affects the safety of us all. Those that would attempt to blame one political party or another is being dishonest at best. Both parties have allowed the oil men free reign for political contributions. Corporate political contributions need to be immediately eliminated for a return to Representative government. People have the right to vote not companies. Companies do not die to protect our country. The anti-trust laws that were in effect before the 90's need to be reinstated.

if we used algae for the basis of our fuel, this would never hapeen.

It seems to me that the gas prices here went up three minutes after the explosion. I don't see what the explosion has to do with the Gas that is already in under ground tanks at the station, or in storage tanks around the country. How do you spell Rip off??

for all the nut cases that say the price of gas goes up right away over something like this you are out of the loop and do not know crap about anything, sit down and shut up.
