Powerball lottery jackpot grows to $181 million

There were no jackpot winners in Wednesdays’ Powerball contest so the top prize rises to $181 million for Saturday's drawing.

The numbers drawn Wednesday were 3, 16, 48, 56 and 58, and the Power Ball was 4.

The jackpot has been building since June 27, and has rolled over 11 times.

The biggest Powerball jackpot ever was $365 million on Feb. 18, 2006. It was won by a single ticket, shared by eight workers at a Conagra meatpacking plant in Nebraska.

Too bad they started charging $2 per ticket insted of $1.But, winning $181 million would be a nice way to recoup the loss!

Can't help but wonder - if 181 of us had a chance to win $1 million, instead of 1 of us winning $181 million, wouldn't sales (the whole point of this exercise..) increase exponentially? I'd buy more than one or two if I knew I had multiple chances. Also, they could then reduce the cost back to $1/ticket so we poor folks could buy two instead of one. I know, I know - just buy 181 tickets, all with different combinations, right? Not the point...

They can't have too many people winning or else no one would go to work and run this country. After all, it is WE, THE PEOPLE, who run this country. Not Washington. It's just that we have forgotten this long ago.

The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are over 175,000,000 to one! Do you think buying $181.00 worth of tickets is a guarantee of winning? Secondly, you don't get $181,000,000.00 as that number's based on the gross amount (before taxes) paid out on an annuity over a 26 year period! The cash value is actually $123 million, which translates into approximately $81.2 million, which is still a lot of money! Conversely, if you think winning a million makes you financially independent, then you're mistaken! People who earn $50,000 a year for 20 years, $83,000 a year for 12 years, and $100,000 for 10 years all earn a million dollars! That's not too bad, but you're not living in a high end community in the United States! Finally, if you can afford to invest $181.00 twice a week into a system that may or may not reward you with an astronomical jackpot, then you'd probably be better off having a systematic investment plan that will grow your wealth to $3-5 million dollars over a 20-30 year period based on investing over $18,000 a year($1,500 a month) over that time frame! Stop being a 99%er and figure out a way to set and hit goals!

NO! The odds are 175,000,000 to 1. What did you do before you became unemployed? Try to figure out how to use the skills you possess to provide solutions to the challenges people face and a reasonable amount of money to be compensated for providing those solutions! Good luck, Jack.

It will be a wothless trip to the store to buy a ticket for this but if I dont and the numbers I would have played come in (and yes i check to see), I will have a hard time dealing with that. Looks like I am going for a ride.

It just surprises me that when people are asked if you're going to buy Lotto ticket. They say if they Lotto gets a little bigger I'll buy one I'm only thinking to myself is this person must already have millions of dollars because if 12 million or 24 million is not enough what is? So for these people to make these stupid comments because I'm pretty sure that they don't have not even 1 million so why are they worried how big the jackpot is this more money than they have anyway. Even after taxes. Better yet don't by any Lotto tickets more chances for me to win.

You cant win if you dont play, also you cant lose if you dont play. But one lottery ticket leads to two, then twenty an before long your selling your furniture for scratch off lottery tickets because you know if you keep playing your bound to win big some day...........I dont care what the guy down the street won, Keep your dollar, its not worth it...

The price for one play used to be a $1.00 Now it's $2.00 and they say "more winners, more often". Why are there so many huge Jackpots all the time now then if the odds of winning are better ? Sounds like Washington Politics to me. Just more BS. I don't ever play anymore. Even a measly $2 is not worth it. Take it back to $1 and i'll buy tickets from time to time.

One more thing.....How often do any of us ever hear about the good each state is doing with the profits from the Lottery ? I seldom hear anything that the Millions in profit are used for. Is someone skimming off the top on this like everything else ?

Lotteries are a tax on people who are bad at probability math.

That said, yeah I'll probably buy a ticket. :(

I have said it before and I will say it again. I have actually known people who have played these lottery things every drawing of their lives, three that I know of personally that are now dead. One of them played around twenty dollars on tickets, twice a week, every week. Did any of them ever win the big one? Nope.

My advice is that you shouldn't waste your money. Sure, somebody always wins eventually...but do you even live in the same state as these people? Even if you lived in the same city or town, as one who did win, and you were the poorest or unluckiest schmuck around, why do you think the winner is actually going to care if you live or die now when they didn't before? Don't give me this...no one play, so I can win, either...because the odds do not increase or decrease on the number of people who play. How about taking the numbers off street signs, etc.? I have seen and heard it all. So many people going to their graves and not a dime to the better. I guess it's your choice.

I play on occassion, but I know the odds. I probably spend maybe $10, in roughly a two month time span. The size of the lottery doesn't effect me. $2 million or $200 million, the odds will not change. While it is rumored that some people are so wrapped up in the gambling bug they will spend money for the babies milk for a chance at the lottery, I sternly advise everyone not to get so caught up into it. So many people going to their graves and not a dime to the better.

Play with the powerplay [$3] the odds are 1: 5,000,000 for $2,000,000 second place prize with about $1,300,000 take home after taxes. These odds are the best for over $1,000,000 take home [Massachusetts] in any game.

I hope I can win a big lottery jackpot like that someday. I've been spending a lot of time studying patterns and mathematical probabilities, and I think it's entirely possible. I won $10,000 once using a system I found online (here's a review if you're interested: http://gamblingsystemreviews.net/lottery-method/ ) If you keep playing smart and not just picking completely random numbers, you'll win eventually.
