At least six people died after authorities say alleged gunman Wade Michael Page opened fire in a suburban Sikh temple, prompting some to go beyond the call of duty to prevent an even greater loss of life. NBC's John Yang reports.
He was shot multiple times, but that didn't stop Oak Creek Police Lt. Brian Murphy from signaling fellow officers to continue rescuing victims at Sunday's deadly rampage at a Sikh temple in southern Wisconsin.

Oak Creek Police Department via AP
Lt. Brian Murphy has served the Oak Creek Police Department for over two decades.
Police say they got the initial call about the attack at 10:25 a.m. Sunday. Murphy, 51, was among the first authorities to arrive on scene where suspect Wade Michael Page allegedly killed six people. The temple is located in the suburb of Oak Creek, Wis. about 11 miles south of Milwaukee.
Murphy was ambushed when he stopped to help a victim, Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards told reporters Monday. He said that Murphy was shot eight to nine times with a handgun at close range. Though he was wearing a bullet-proof vest, Murphy was hit in his extremities and suffered a serious wound in his neck.
When officers went to check on Murphy, he signaled them to go into the temple to help other victims, Edwards said.
"He waved them off … and told them to go into temple to assist those in there," the police chief said.
Authorities in Wisconsin say the suspected gunman in the deadly shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, Wade Michael Page, Â was the former leader of a neo-Nazi skinhead rock band.
The suspect was killed on the scene by another officer.
Murphy, a 21-year veteran of the Oak Creek Police Department, remained in critical condition on Monday in the hospital. He is expected to survive.
Oak Creek Mayor Stephen Scaffidi called Murphy's efforts "heroic actions in the line of fire."
"He helped to take down somebody that was intent on taking down lots and lots of people," Scaffidi told NBC News on Monday. "He thought about others before himself."
The mayor also said Murphy has been a part of the tactical squad for years and is the emergency management liaison for the city.
"I sat in a meeting with him three weeks ago and we talked about situations like this," Scaffidi said.
Former Oak Creek Police Chief Thomas Bauer told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he is not surprised by Murphy's heroic actions.
"He's a highly distinguished police officer, highly decorated," Bauer told the Journal Sentinel.
Murphy had been one of three finalists for the police chief's job after Bauer retired, according to the Journal Sentinel.
"He was willing to step up and take on the additional responsibilities and duties and keep that position in-house," Bauer told the Journal Sentinel. "He was certainly well-qualified to take on that role."
On Monday, there was already a growing Facebook group of Sikhs expressing "extreme gratitude" to Murphy.
"We are thankful to ALL the first responders and organizations that helped our community yesterday, but feel a SPECIAL thanks needs to go out to Lt. Murphy who is in critical care," wrote group creator Seema Singh-Dulai.
New York-based human rights group Sikhs for Justice said they are pledging a $10,000 award to Murphy, the Journal Sentinel also reported.

God bless.
He's Irish so nobody is commenting. The slave of the British Empire. More men of Irish descent have won the Congressional Medal of Honor than any other nationality. They are commonly even today parodied as drunk wife beaters and as of yet there is no Irish-American History Month. Just a day that everyone wears green and gets drunk. How fitting. Why not change African-American (Black) History Month to a day and everyone put a bone through their nose and eat watermelon? If he was a black dude he would be drinking a beer with Obama by now.
God bless and god speed
Actually, given that he's in intensive care, I bet he wouldn't be drinkinga beer with Obama yet.
You hit the nail on the head, Ophotfoot. I'll take it a step further. He's an Irish Catholic instilled with the values that we used to teach our kids. He represents everything the left hates. Get well soon, Lt. Murphy. America needs more of your kind.
You spoke too soon, PrimitiveOne. Being a civil servant, he's more likely than not a member of a UNION!
*gasp*
I wish a quick recovery for the wounded warrior.
Comments like yours above (@1.1), Ophotfoot, are idiotic, inane and best kept to you and the kind of household you certainly must live in. Insensitive and stupid remarks such as yours at a time when people have died and are suffering clearly display your scant intellect.
Murphy. Ah, a solid Irishman indeed with enough spirit to pass around to those in need. Just look at that face, an Irishman all the way to the bone.
Dear Ireland, thank you for giving America your best. We're a grateful benefactor.
Have they set up a sight where we can contribute to the falling officer and his family! Also the other families that suffered the loss of their love ones! Like I said before we can do background checks before we sell guns to these people but we can't do crazy checks! There has got to be a better way. No citizen should have more fire power than the police department. "Protect and Serve"!
Ahh, feel the hate! He's a police officer who went far beyond the call of duty (as most would, regardless of color or background). Ophoptfoot and PrimitiveoOne are simply bigoted idiots who have to take every opportunity to spread their hate. They would be the first to rail against the "government employees", you know, the "socialist scum who suck off of the people who do REAL work". I hate to tell you this, but Lt. Murphy (and thousands of other dedicated, loyal, UNION, public empoyees just like him) is who you are talking about when you spew your hate-filled filth. Thanks, Lt. Murphy, for being there when needed and performing your duty in a heroic fashion. This is one LIBERAL (oh, my God, no!) who appreciates your service. And, for your information, PrimitiveOne, I would stack up my children's and grandchildren's values with yours any day of the week. You are the one who represents everything "the left" hates. Lt. Murphy exemplifies everything we cherish and value. So, speak for yourself!
Ophotfoot,
Yes, what you say is not off the mark at all. We Irish frequently do our bit for God and country,.. in whatever country we end up serving. The gratitude has been rather thin I will agree.
However, a true Irish knows their lot in life and we just make the best of it. Sure, we take our hits, our beatings and get knocked down. But we get up, brush it off and keep going. Most of the time, all the thanks we get is the ability to get up and keep plugging along.
To us Irish, the ability to keep going has become thanks enough. To ask for more is, well, not Irish.
First of all, good luck and speedy recovery to Lt. Murphy. Thank you for your selfless service to help and save the lives of others. I would bet that Lt. Murphy was not concerned with the race or ethic background of the victimes of this tragic event - he just did his duty. He is an fine American.
Jeanvaljean -
If you're looking for sensitivity you might want to steer clear of the Internet. While I agree that the comment in question is crass and ill-timed it is reflective of how many Americans of Irish descent feel. They deal with the burden of generational poverty and persecution while also being subjected to modern societal denunciation because the color of their skin is similar to the same Europeans who may have owned slaves or fought native Americans. If they question the fairness of laws on the books that relate to race they are castigated and ostracized as typical white racist bigots incapable of hate-free thought and thus dismissible. I feel for the Irish; leaving a land in which they're hated only to arrive at a land in which they're hated but are also blamed for the sins of those they are hated by. As far as I am concerned there should be an Irish history month and there should be scholarships specifically designated for impoverished Irish-Americans. There should also be laws that protect those of Irish descent from discrimination; don't tell me there isn't any, I've witnessed it. Not only that, I feel that crimes perpetrated against the Irish if conclusively proved to have been due to their genetics should be prosecuted as hate crimes. It's such a rich and tragic culture; they deserve social justice.
The comedy stylings of Ophotfoot, ladies and gentlemen, Ophotfoot!
He'll be performing more of his particular brand of hate-filled comedy at the upcoming GOP convention during the Monster Truck Rally and Ted Nugent concert along with Andrew Dice Clay, Newt "Pull Mah Finger" Gingrich, Lisa Lampanelli, Michael Richards, and Dr Laura "The N-Bomb" Schelssinger. Be sure to get your tickets at your local Chic-Fill-A resturants, Klan rallies, or where ever Pork Rinds and "Guns and Ammo" mags are sold, you hear!! Oh, and GIT 'ER DONE!!
Being a good police officer means placing others above yourself. That is what he did, and that is why he is a hero. Really, it is disgusting that people feel the need to bring politics into this in order to bash others on articles such as this where politics has nothing to do with it. Grow up.
BTW, I agree we SHOULD have a Irish-American history month, probably in March with St. Patrick's Day (since you do claim it anyways, be honest). I read "How the Irish Became White" so I would love to hear the open public discussion of how the Irish (and Jews and Italians, while we're at it) became white, and therefore acceptably American as we present the idenity today (watch any political commerical, but especially any from the GOP to see if this cultural meme is true) and how others are still forced to labor under 19th Century racial stereotypes. I'd really like to hear the Irish cultural telling of how once they were as lowly as blacks on the social scale but today are culturally whiter than some of the so-called Founding Fathers (Jefferson did have a well-known taste for his black slaves, after all. If such was enough to nullify Barack's momma's whiteness, it arguably made TJ our true first "black" president, if we use the Clinton standard)
Clearly the difference between an honorable and rightous policeman compared to a polarized idiot of a coward.
These phony, cry baby, insecure cowards live amoung us, neck deep in freedom, and pull this cowardice? WHY? I honestly believe the reason we are witnessing such an increase in this ignorance has EVERYTHING to do with Mitch Mconnell's unhonorable agenda the first day of Obama's administration. Everything.
Ciewywtb42mh6sps-23: I agree with your posts but you forgot one little something . That obviously Ophotfoot & primitiveone do not realize. It's Northern Irish history.
The Irish Catholic Republicans (IRA) were considered socialists, and were against such institutions as the (land grabbing) banks in Northern Ireland. I can only suspect the word "Republican" fooled them.
I hope for a FULL RECOVERY for LT.Murphy. And am glad he works where he does.
like so many others blinded by hatred, to not be able to tell the difference between a Muslim and a Sikhs one would really need to be blind and deaf, and that is just for beginners!!!
stupid people do stupid things. and the shooter exemplifies both---- to the extreme!!!
i am ashamed to be an American today!! to gun down peaceful people, people who have gone out of their way to help their fellow city residents, is shameful. in the least!!
and, yes, Lt Murphy, exemplifies the very best.
unfortunately a lot of people had to die to find this out! which kind of takes a lot of the shine off.
Lt. Murphy is a credit to the brotherhood of those who swear to protect and serve.
As Paul in Chicago says; THERE IS A DIFFERENCE between Muslims and Sikhs and it's not comforting to view the ignorance of those who don't know the difference.
The gratitude of the Sikh community for his service should be recognized as well.
Very nice, Ophotfoot, now instead of wife beating drunkards we will be portrayed as hate-filled bigoted morons. As an American, very proud of my Irish heratige, I am embarrassed by your comments.
Peace and healing to all the victims of this horrific crime.
No one has ever won a Congressional Medal of Honor before because it does not exist. There IS the Medal of Honor, however that goes to members of the armed forced, not policemen.
I am grateful to any cop that gets out there and protects those around him or her...there are cops of all nationalities and colors...and, of course, species...don't forget the K-9 cop.
Opho...please try not and embarrass all of us, no matter what you come from...people have died, Officer Murphy almost died, and you start in on your bigoted bull@!$%#.
It's obvious how selfish you are.
True hero. Pray for his speedy recovery. Good values come from good family and all praise for his parents for raising him with best values.
Ciewy, You got me LMAO! Great post man, sincerly. Here's the thing with the Irish you see bigotry is now a term that is referred to the blacks. But back then, during the Potato Famine in Ireland they came to America in droves. And like all immigrants they were beat down to their place in line socially. The worst freaking job at that time you could have was a Policeman. You had no weapon other than a club and you were supposed to preserve order. I couldn't imagine going into a New York Bowery dive trying to break up a brawl with a billy-club without getting your brain knocked out of your head. Well I guess they stuck it out and moved up the political ladder. A great case in point is Chicago. My Grandparents came to America just before WW1 because my Grandpa didn't agree with Germany's direction politically. Even though he was the longest serving volunteer fireman in Illinois (50 yrs.), and an American whose son,my father, flew B-52 Liberator's in the Pacific in WWII. When he came here, legally, and the war broke, he could get only the jobs no one wanted. Being German was the lowest thing you could be then with the war on and all. My Grandpa used to cut ice out of Lake Michigan in the winter and haul it up however many flights of stairs it took to deliver it. The first thing my grandparents did was learn English just to get everyone off their ass. But they had a daughter,my aunt, who had a daughter,my cousin, who married an Irish Policeman in Riverdale,Il. Mike Ryan responded to a auto accident with an overturned car in a ditch on a rural road in a snowstorm. There was an injured woman unconscious from the wreck who was taken to the hospital. There was no car seat, the storm was howling freezing rain as Officer Ryan waited for the tow truck. The officer heard something coming from the car above all the noise of the storm, miraculously, and found an infant bundled in a tossed blanket from the accident on the floor in the back seat. Had he not have been there the child would have froze to death in the wrecking yard. So, the actions of Lt. Murphy do not surprise me yet they continue to amaze me with their hindsight and Irish valor. My family is very patriotic Ciewywtb42mh6mps-23 we love this country, our home. But to be politically correct I would be a racist thinking that the Irish cops are the ones with the balls to get things done. So since you brought it out. I'll stand by my rags to breaking even immigrant true story. So without any white guilt what so ever, lets hear yours!
Why do you fxxxing idiots talk about race or religion the cop was a true hero to risk his life for thous injured when hurt himself. Not all people or cops would do what he did.
Every time I read an article of this nature I am humbled by the bravery displayed by our nation’s police officers, firefighters and the public in general. Through senseless acts of violence I hope we don’t lose sight that people in general are inherently good. Unfortunately a handful of bad actors has a devastating effect on the masses. I salute Lt. Murphy for his courage and will pray for him and all those who have been injured or killed and their families. As far as the Sikh community goes I hope they can see through this tragedy and realize that most Americas welcome any religion with open arms, unfortunately there will always be individuals that are exceptions to the rule.
The problem is, this wasn't a "senseless act" of violence. It was a carefully planned attack against a group of people *perceived* to be a threat. The right-wing media encourages fear and hate of anyone who doesn't look white enough, or Christian enough. Then you add mental instability, and easy access to guns, and get this. Or what happened to Gabby Giffords, or... or... or...
FOX et al's chickens are coming home to roost.
I still believe people are inherantly good. However, people who blindly belive in something without sufficient education are also easily bamboozled.
"If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell
us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then, we are
up for grabs for the next charlatan (political or religious) who comes rambling
along." ~ Carl Sagan
BeekGirl: YOU'RE WRONG.
Believe'nAmerica - I couldn't care less what your opinion is.
yeah..if we just get all dem damn guns up offen the streets den this here would not happens no more in the USA because only good peeples would have some guns and nobody could be shotten other peeples much less day own selfeves..
you be soem smart peeples
was Sagan talkin' about Obammer?
And I could care less about your opinion Beek. You lambaste perceived hatred while simultaneously promoting it as long as it is properly directed you hypocrite. Who the f*ck are you to assign this atrocity the right? When did Fox News espouse the murder of Sikhs or anyone for that matter? Do you actually believe that only those on the right have the capacity to do this type of thing? History disagrees. What a tool.
Beekgirl, I kinda see your point. There is definitely some truth to it.
... that being said. The left is no different. Neither side as a monopoly on mental instability, or people who blindly believe something without sufficient education.
Anybody who blindly follows either the liberal or conservative agenda is a sheep, and they do more damage than good with their voting. Anyone who things either Obama or Romney is a good choice is deluded. We're left picking the lesser evil, and anyone that can't see that is a simple minded uneducated sheep.
God speed brother, get well soon.
stupid bitchgrl
Spencer-399802 - I never claimed a particular side has a monopoly on mental instability. Of course, there are mentally ill people in all walks of life. I also did not claim followers of any political spectrum blindly follow more than another. (My exact words were: However, people who blindly belive in something without sufficient education are also easily bamboozled.) However, a dominant feature of the right is to utilize F.U.D. tactics (xenophobia, Islamophobia, homophobia, misogyny, marginalization of the poor, etc.) in their political discourse.
BeekGirl
If you're saying that sewing the seeds of anger, frustration and ideological conflicts leads to senseless violence, I agree.
I don't think fox news is 'entirely,' to blame. The flames being fed on these cable news channels can only burn in a culture as that has become as desperate and dysfunctional as ours.
Indeed, FOX isn't the only voice of ill-reason, but it's one of the loudest and most-watched.
Independent media such as DemocracyNow! are so important.
Um....Beekgirl, the shooter was a NAZI or National Socialist.... Socialist - just like our current president.
TheAirdog
I thought Mr. Obama was supposed to be a Marxist communist Trotskyite.
I wish you folk in the
rightwrong wing would make up your hive mind and stick to it.Beekgirl, just ignore those SOB's, they are probably paid to write crap from the Koch brother, Rove, and especially the NRA. The biggest problem is that the NRA has way to much power, they use that power to threaten politician's if they don't vote the way they want them too, and unfortunately we have a lot coward politician's who are too afraid to stand up to them. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people who want to own guns for hunting, target shooting, but to own assault weapons is wrong, they belong to the military not ordinary people, they should not be for sale, period!
Laura-3089574 - Bah. I'm not bothered by inarticulate parrots. :-)
I like that Airdog thinks our President and a white supremacist are the same...
This Officer is the Best of the Best. You saved countless lives standing your ground. Speedy recovery sir!!
He didn't do it on his own. Someone had to build the roads and bridges for him to get there. (Sarc off)
Well, he really didn't do it on his own, he just refused treatment before others who were injured.
There you go again PrimitiveoOne. What an idiot. The correct (you know, factual) complete quote you are trying to use sarcastically in this post was President Obama pointing out that success in this country has always depended on infrastructure and public roads, utilities, etc. In fact, if you bothered to listen to his entire speech (instead of Fox News's misleading hatchet job), side-by-side with good-old Mitts, they both say almost the same thing: That entrepreneurship and creativity are magnificent, that the United States system has been the best in the world in promoting success, but that every success story has family and community, the builders of roads, the security of our military, excellent schools, and utility services infrastructure that made it possible for that success to occur. And, guess where all of that support came from... THE GOVERNMENT!!!! If this is going to be MItt's campaign, it is based on a total lie.
Leave it to the morally right wingers to belittle someone who is a true hero, he wanted his fellow officers to help others before they help him, this is a true American, can't get any better than that.
Took 8-9 shots at close range. Hit extremites and even his neck, and still had the line of thought to help the victims inside first before taking any help or Aid from his fellow officers.
This Ladies and Gentleman is a True American Hero.
NYPride.........totally agree. Leave it to the morally right wingers to belittle a true American hero, he asked his fellow officers to help others before they help him, can't get more American than that.
Laura...I'm about as far to the right on many areas as one can be be, but please don't use dimwit generalities to equate me with those who might speak either disparagingly, sarcastically or otherwise belittle the actions of Lt. Murphy.
I belong to the NRA and believe me, nothing p*sses me off more than jackasses such as Page or Loughner or Holmes who step on my 2nd Amendment rights.
Good Job and yes he is a HERO!
Every time someone with a badge does his job he's labeled a hero, it's a little annoying to say the least. Here's a perfect example - Cop jumps into a lake to save a dog he's a hero. Regular guy jumps into the same lake he's a good Samaritan. It's the most overused word in the history of the English language. Just because someone is helping someone who got shot that doesn't make them a hero. Now if someone shields someone else from the line of fire and they take the bullets themselves that makes them a hero, but getting shot doesn't make you a hero. It makes you stupid for getting shot in the first place - Unless of course your wearing a badge then your a hero.
Did you not read the article? This isnt just a case of a Cop being in the right place at the right time and taking a shot to his Vest and walking away. He wasnt just shot. He was shot 8-9 times at close range, with several hitting legs, arms and even his Neck. And hes in critical condition at this very moment. What this man did was Heroic. And people need to look at him as such.
What a stupid comment. Comparing a cop that was shot 8-9 times at close range to a cop jumping in a lake to save a dog. Lol. Maybe you did not even read the whole article. The guys IS a hero (not really debatable) because after being lit up, he told officers to attend to the other victims before himself. make sense?
Also, family guy is a great show, yet your stupidity leaves a stain. Weak.
Damn wayback you're an ignoramus. Of course he's a HERO. Badge or not, what else would he have to do to be a hero in your mind????
Not Wayback... WAY OUT THERE!!!!
I certainly understand the english you wrote there, but to say "only police get cited as heroes" is just plain ignorant. Non police officers get awarded for being heroes all the time.
Keep in mind that police deal with the trash and scum of our society every phcking day, it's part of their job, that in MY book makes them all heroes. And I am positive they go unoticed for their daily bravery.
To say he was stupid for getting shot, well you obviously didnt read how he was attending a wounded person, too bad that wounded person wasnt you wayback2012, I bet you would count him a heroe in that case.
Standing in the line of fire during a mad spree of killings is heroic!
I just got trolled...
Any time someone puts their life on the line to protect others, they are, by definition, a hero. It would not matter if they are a police officer or just person passing by the situation.
FYI, the story of the Good Samaritan was used by Jesus to illustrate a point. Samaritans were, in that time, much like Muslims, Catholics, Mormons and other non-Protestant religions are in the US today. They were an off-shoot of the main Israeli religion which did not recognize "THE Temple" in Jerusalem as the only place to worship God. As such, Samaritans were shunned by "real" Jews, much as other religions are shunned by modern evangelical protestant Christians today. The point of the story Jesus told was to illustrate that a relationship with God is more important than how one worships and that a person has such a relationship is evident in how they act in the world.
The real question is this:
What makes someone a hero?
Wayback must be some young kid or some young adult still rebelling!! he/she has also most likely never been in harms way or even been near this type of situation!! police officers are hurt in the line of duty every day, yet that does not mean they are always performing a heroic act! i am a police office, been shot at a couple times, stabbed, and hurt in line of duty several other times...i never considered what has happened to me as heroic acts..its just part of my job! that being said, what this officer did is truly heroic!! he put other lives before his!! thats why we take this job, all in all its to protect and help the immediate public!! but i dont expect wayback to understand that if never been put in that position or able to face those fears!! i think you can do couragous acts which in turn can lead to heroic acts in a given situation!!
Mike, imo any officer that does his job the right way(placing others before him/herself) is a hero. Anyone that places others above him/herself is a hero, regardless of their job.
Wayback, the use of 'Stewie Griffin' for your avatar seems quite apropos in view of the malignant, idiotic crap that you have spewed on this website. Still having trouble getting along with 'Brian'?

Wayback, the use of 'Stewie Griffin' for your avatar seems quite apropos in view of the malignant, idiotic cr*p that you have spewed on this website. Still having trouble getting along with 'Brian'?
BeekGirl...mental illness has a lot to do with what these shooters do...unfortunately mental illness is NOT taken seriously until something like this happens.
And Carl Sagan was an awesome man...
WTF wayback...still pissed because they didn't accept you for the academy? Just as well...you probably would have been one of those bad cops that gives good cops a bad rap.
Go back to your cartoons, Gomer, and just hope you never need the police at your door. The cool thing is, even fi they knew how you feel about them, they would STILL save your ass if you needed it saved.
All true blue police are hero's!! There is a cop when you need one, and a damn good one to boot in this case. Heal fast, you are in our prayers to come out of this unscathed.
Wayback; your post made me sad. The officer's act of directing rescue to others first makes him a hero.
Getting shot does not make him stupid.
well said Larry. Wayback sounds like a child. Lt. Murphy was attempting to halp a person already injured. For his Samaritan assistance he got ambushed and almost killed, finally he waves off his buddies to urge them to help other wounded. So he is the ultimate hero. The phrase "Above and beyond the call of duty" seems inadequate at a time like this. Salute to Lt. Murphy.
I wonder if Wayback was one of the wounded, lying there bleeding to death, if he'd still consider the cop just a "good samaritan". Get well soon, Lt. Murphy.
Wayback...your use of 'Stewie Griffin' for your avatar speaks volumes. In the future please avoid any unfortunate mishaps by offering such malignant observations in public, they'll go on your permanent record.
Lt. Murphy swore an oath to protect and to serve, he was wounded in the act of upholding his oath. Many others whom will encounter in your life swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States which allows people of your ilk to expound your maligned viewpoints in a public forum.
At some point in your life, I hope that you too will be grateful for those of us who swore an oath.
Please, may this fine officer fully recover. He exemplifies courage and humanity. He distinguished himself and placed his life and security above others. He has my deepest gratitude and respect as do the other officers who quickly responded to help the people who were so unfortunately victims of this hate crime.
Go ahead and stick this guy's picture next to the word "Hero".
The dude is a geniune all-American hero.
Lt. Brian Murphy is the epitome of a hero. He is a true American Hero. I wish him a Speedy Recovery.
He is serving his community well and is a hero for so many of us to look up to! I thank you sir, your life could have easily been terminated without the immediate help that you turned away!!
You hear so much negative about the police. Most I've worked with have a genuine desire to help and serve. Yet, still, they are portrayed as raciest and selfish. My heart goes out to his family and the families of all those killed or injured.
Any person who takes an oath to defend others, where it be at the local, state, federal, or the armed forces are heroes until proven otherwise. Literally in an eye blink they may go from "its a wonderful day" to a life or death situation. They don't get paid way enough for me, you, or wayback to lay it on the line.
!
wayback is probably black, they hate cops
Color of your skin shouldnt matter, but since you bring it up, racial profiling is very real. I am sure he is not black however. He's too ignorant.
and you're probably white so you hate the fbi and atf right?
also, when the fbi go after people like this guy, people like you say the right wing nut jobs rights are are being taking away
Brave and good COP.
Sad for the victims, they have our simpathy.
However the more the press HYPE these hideous crimes the more 'copycats' will seek their 15 minutes in the limelight.
This is an officer who did not see color, race, or religion. He saw a person needing help and was willing to place himself in a line of fire to render such. He is the example of many unsung heroes serving our communities be it Police, Fire, Rescue, Medical, and when natural disaster strikes, even utility workers. To the poster who claims he is not a hero, just a person doing his job, just the fact this officer, and countless others who serve, took on this job, makes them heroes.
Amen, Jim. This police officer truly is a hero, and nothing anyone says to the contrary can make that any less true. God bless!
God bless, and god bless the family's, thank you for your valor and heroic effort
Bless him. Bless him and those like him who work every day to make sure we're safe.
A hero...period!
It's about time we hear about the good and heroic actions of a police officer. All you hear about is the negative of the police but we forget how everyday they put themselves in danger. For all of those that complain and always have this claim of not trusting the police and play a victim when you never where or because of a song and you think your part of the hood. The first person you call in a tragedy will be who?, the police.
This man lost his wife a month ago and now this? God bless and speedy recovery!
Wayback ... excuse me but you are wrong. You obviously did not read the article properly. He is a HERO because instead of letting others help him he chose to help the other victims. He must have known that he was seriously wounded but he helped those who he felt needed the help more. It is about time that this country teaches respect for our police officers and firemen. Stop being rude to them and support them. They put themselves in jeapody everytime they go out on a call. Parents should teach their children fundamental respect and manners at home and there possibly would be less crime. Get well soon and my good thoughts go with you.
History is written by men who hung heroes. Not necessarily the case here but I hope you get my point. This hero survived. I hope he has a say in how the history of this event is recorded.
geezus
Very Brave and performing Heroic acts while in the line of duty. Murphy is the exemplary of how American Law officers should be.
I know he wouldn't want to be called a hero doing his job. But he is one in my book. It is men like this that go beyond the call of duty and have the public welfare in first thoughts that make me proud to be an American.
Way to go Robo Cop! You are da man! And Thank You.
He should be proud of his actions think how many the killer might have shot if the cop didnt think about others instead of himsleve this man should recieve an award better yet everything that he wants!!
I agree with Beckgirl, if you advocate exclusion and claim this group or that group doesn't belong in our country then sooner or later someone is going to take you at your word. The conservative right, who claims to be representing Christian values then preaches to exclude this group for their beliefs or that group for their orientations have got to realize that their position will be taken to extremes.
Congressman Steve King (Rep. Iowa) just wrote on his web site that strength through diversity is a myth and if we restricted immigration to acceptable classes of people we would be stronger.
