Family to sell Obama letter promising to make troops 'priority'

Courtesy momentsintime.com

Cynthia Arnold is selling a note she received from President Obama. The proceeds will be used to buy her son, a veteran, and his family a new car.

In January 2009, Cynthia Arnold made an emotional decision to write President Obama a heartfelt letter, imploring him to "please make our troops one of your priorities."

She wrote the letter after receiving a call from her son, Matthew, a soldier who had just arrived at Fort Hood in Texas and needed to know who might make funeral arrangements if he died serving.

"I never dreamed I'd have that conversation," Arnold told NBC News. She knew then what she needed to ask of the president.

"I beg you to spare other Mothers from taking a call such as mine from their sons and daughters. Use the power that has been given to you to bring our troops home as quickly and safely as possible," the letter read.

A few weeks later, Arnold said, a response arrived from the White House. A small note card was tucked inside two pieces of cardboard. Handwritten by the president, it read: "I will do everything in my power to make troops like Matthew my priority."

Arnold treasured the letter, but is selling it now to help her son transition to civilian life. After more than five years in the Army, Matthew has left the service as a specialist with experience in chemical operations and small arms maintenance. He never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

"The job he was trained to do in the Army is not particularly a job he’s going to be able to bank on in the States," Arnold said.

To help Matthew, his fiancée and their 1-year-old daughter gain their footing, Arnold and her husband are selling the letter for $8,500. The sum, minus a 25 percent commission, will go toward buying Matthew and his family a car.

Gary Zimet, curator of MomentsinTime.com, the website through which the letter is being sold, told NBC News that the note card is valuable because the president rarely personally signs letters. Unless it is being sent to the family members of someone killed in action, the president uses an autopen for his signature.

Zimet has sold 10 notes signed by the president, which have fetched between $5,000 and $15,000. Most of the president's responses, Zimet said, are to Americans experiencing severe hardship.

"If I had to sum up the content of these letters in one line, it would be 'Keep your spirits up,' " Zimet said.

Matthew Arnold told NBC News that he is not worried about the transition to civilian life and the tough job market. He plans to take classes on working with firearms to earn a certification and then hopes to apprentice at a gun shop. "Regardless, I’ll survive no matter what," he said.

Cynthia Arnold never thought she'd part with the letter so soon, but when it became clear that it could help her son, there was no question about doing it.

"We want to help a young family get started," she said.

Surely there will be some fool to buy it, look at all the worshipers that gather at this site. If I had it I would rework it on photoshop using the so called "Commander n Chief" in his reverent pose as the Honor Guard passes with the flag as the background for letter.

As a Veteran this wasted president will get no respect from me. He hasn't earned it!

The National Debt as of 09/28/2001 = $5,807,463,412,200.06 ... as of his last budget year 09/30/2009 = $11,909,829,003,511.75 ... thats a little better than doubling it, or increasing by $6.1 Trillion

Yeah my Worm friend as you can see Bush left a 12 trillion debt and a 1.4 trillion deficit. YOU DO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY BOTH MEAN RIGHT?? And i do hope that you know that the 2009 budget was Bush budget.

WE had Mitt tell us the other day that if we were to cut spending in a time of recovery like now we would see another recession almost immediately. But since the business man that knows how budgets and gdp works you didn't hear about it right.

Now we come to the deficit left by Bush how in the @#$# was Obama going to cut that deficit in the worst recession since the great depression???? Now lets look at it like this in the 2013 budget the deficit stands at 900 billion a 500+ billion cut since Obama came into office.

Now i know what your response is going to be.... but cbo said it was going to be above a trillion...Thats only if the Bush tax cuts don't expire.

I got some links to everything if you need them.

Government spending? The lowest in 60 years.. Thats why we still have a unemployment rate above 8%...

What we could do is raise taxes just like Reagan did the 80s and that will bring down the deficit a hundred billion for the year and still have some left for job investment. But nooooo.... Mr. Grover says no new revenues and republicans obey.

Government spending occurred under the previous administration like there was no tomorrow.

When Clinton left in hes 2000 budget he left a spending of 1.795 trillion dollars. When Bush left in hes 2009 budget he left a 3.330 spending budget. A 1.535 increase in 8 years..

THAT'S SPENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2009 Budget Obama added 187 billion for ARRA on top of the 3.330 spending.

3.517 the 2009 budget THE 2012 BUDGET HAS A SPENDING OF 3.795 A LESS THAN 460 BILLION INCREASE. The 2013 budget calls for a 3.800 trillion spending. Obama has spent about one third less than Bush. Hope you understand numbers.

The Ryan plan will be the end of Republicans if they keep talking about it from until November. Especially for the people who depend on Medicare. Wanna bet that Obama will make a big deal out of this weeks before the election???

starsailing, eventually he will just leave for today and come tomorrow hoping people like you and me wont be around here to call him out for it. And you are right lets keep posting about the Ryan plan.. Many republicans on here don't know what it is. And yet they follow Romney like blind sheep.

Ok lets just pretend for a moment that Obama is really the biggest spender in the last 100 years even though 1.34 proves that he is not even close. Romney plan calls for a tax decrease and government spending cuts so that the trickle down will work its magic just like it did in the last decade. Before all the spending cuts take effect the deficit will skyrocket even more and the debt along with it. Romney will have to cut something significant in order to balance the budget and start paying down the debt.

What will it be? Medicare? SS? Defense spending? or discretionary spending? Tell me what would you like to see get cut? discretionary?? It will create chaos in our country if you eliminate this whole spending completely. Defense? no way he wants to increase it. And last but not least SS and Medicare will be completely gone and you people will just allow it.

As a system of government in the Tsardom of Russia and Russian Empire, it is known as Tsarist autocracy, or Tsarism. The term is derived from the Latin word Caesar, which was intended to mean "Emperor" in the European medieval sense of the term - a ruler with the same rank as a Roman emperor, holding it by the approval of another emperor or a supreme ecclesiastical official (the Pope or the Ecumenical Patriarch) - but was usually considered by western Europeans to be equivalent to king, or to be somewhat in between a royal and imperial rank.

Tells us why you think Obama appointed czar or supreme rulers in our government?

re--it's about time you really think someone would be running for president that had not paid any taxes much less be wealthy and not paid any....typical

Maybe he's trying to hide, that he DIDN'T pay his fair share. Remember, if you have a child you get a $1,000 deduction, if you invest in a race horse, you can deduct $77,000 like Romney. Course the rules re different for Romney right?

banter back and forth all you want, it won't change a thing until we do away with millionaires and billionaires running this country. ain't too many of them that ever worked for a living. many of them never served in the military thanks to influential parents pulling strings. i am sure there are quite a few of the people we entrust the running of this country that have tons of $$$$$$ in offshore accounts. IMHO there isn't a politician that is working for the middle class.

almost all of them are so crooked that when they die we can screw them into the ground.

The only response I ever got from a letter I wrote to Obozo during the 2008 campaign was from his campaign office to continually beg for contributions. Yeah right.

Just out of curiosity, would any of you actually pay $8,500.00 for a letter signed by Obozo? I sure as hell wouldn't.

Who would have guessed this thread would turn into a political debate?.... s/

You people really need to get a grip on reality and get a life. Always arguing about politics on every story. The left this, the right that. Who cares!! They both suck giant donkey balls, all politicians do. It's their life - get power, gain more wealth, screw everyone and their first born. End of story. It's never going to change because you inbreeds can't seem to understand that neither side is better and maybe try to fall somewhere in the middle.

I digress though. This country has always been me vs. you, black vs. white, left vs. right. There is no in-between in America. And we think the middle east is full of extremists....

Obozo Janine? lol, wow. The funny thing is when he finally gets to debate this clown Romney you are going to see a verbal azz kickin. All will see how much of a fake stilt this guy Romney really is.

Notice that in Obama ads he actually says something of substance that makes sense even to deaf dumb and blind folks like yourself. He talks from his own mouth. When Romney talks he embarrasses all of us and the country as a whole. His ads are just an extension of the typical Fox News talking points. Same old same old. Nothing out of his own mouth with substance.

Look, if the Repubs actually put up a candidate that had any kind of genuine character, then maybe your party could be taken seriously. But honestly, the guy is a complete typical rich white guy, square of a tool. He has no clue about human struggle.

How can anyone that hasn't had to fight to stay afloat in his entire existence possibly feel for the average american? It just doesn't make any sense realistically.

Many of you folks are missing the point to this article. "Mom" wrote obama a letter in January 2009 goading obama into keeping his campaign promises - get the troops out. The reason she is selling the note now is because for every day that the troops remain in battle decreases the value of the note - her plea has less and less impact. When obama is removed from office the note will be worthless for decades.

She mentioned the note being sent encased in cardboard which shows the depth of obama's ego - treasure this note as if it were a fine piece of artwork. It could have easily been sent in a regular envelope. As far as collector value goes, the envelope would add value to the note since it should have the seal of the president and postmarkings of the White House.

Mom has "treasured" this note for a whopping three years. After consignment fees she will clear less than $6375 to be used for a car. Where can a family find a reliable car for that little money? Mom was worried about her son being returned safely from a war that he never went to. She is concerned about his financial status and he isn't overly concerned. He is confident that he will find work. Since she is planning on using the proceeds from the sale of the note, why not give the note to her son and let him decide what to do with it? Maybe he would "treasure" it rather than cash it in.

I'm sure Hussein will think they're being selfish because they didn't just turn over the proceeds to his campaign, like he's asked for newlyweds to do with their monetary wedding gifts or in lieu of receiving material gifts.

Len was a straight shooter,no bull$hit, can give you a truthful accurate understanding of Chicago political corruption.Another book that comes to mind is"We don't want nobody, nobody sent", Milton Rakove, was about political hiring practice in Chicago. The significance is that nothing has changed here and that Barack Obama is a major part of this system that is designed to take, nothing more. It's clear, the President has Bill Daley,( son of Richard J. Daley who wrote the book on Machine Politics) relieved of his White House duties to run the re-election campaign. You are either mis informed or are a part of the "gravy train" government "workers" in your state. There is no way you can believe Barack Obama otherwise. * You want to hear the last Liberal President make an a$$ of himself in his own words? Well here is the link http!www.npr.org/templates/story/.php?storyId=38107; NPR Johnson McNamara tapes,Golf of Tonkin. Johnson and McNamara getting us into the Viet Nam War in order to get re-elected. Notice how Johnson referred to Sen Everet Dirksen, Republican,Il who wanted to wait for clarification on the incident and how it was Johnson's decision to bomb the North Vietnamese and start the war for political gain. tony: actually the law suit is to allow everyone to be able to vote early, not just the military. The suit is not to prevent the military from voting earlier.

As to Dollars wasted, you are correct. That is what happens when you have one war which should have been focused on (Afghanistan) and one war started based on LIES (Iraq.) If military personnel are getting their information from the same places you apparently are, it is no wonder they do not have more support for the President.

Did you know that in the first two years in office, President Obama increased funding for the VA. Or that since the Republican Party took over the House, they have attempted to cut VA spending, exactly when many are returning from war ?

But at least we know that Halliburton and Xe have made profits in the middle-East, right ?

How do you think you'll fair if Mitt Romney comes in and adopts Paul Ryan's "end medicare and social security" budget plan? I hope your 3 active sons are able to stay in or leave and make successful lives outside the military instead of ending up in another "war for $$$." Mark is right on. President Obama is not a friend to our veterans. I am very conservative and will be glad to see Obama lose in November. I have a brother who is a disabled vet that is quite liberal and voted for Obama. He has nothing but disgust for our President these days and says he would not vote for him again. My brother could list many things that our President is doing but he gets so upset talking about it we change the subject. He talks about throwing his vote away by voting for a nobody but I'm working on him about that. He spends a lot of time with fellow disabled vets and the feelings run about equal with most of them. I'm not sure about all the issues with them but a lot has to do with the care that they receive now and the direction that it is going to go in the future. I will assume that they know better than I do on the subject.

Like Romney is going to be a "friend" to the troops? His budget calls for a billion dollars to the military but not one dollar is going to troop support, if you look closely the money is going to corporations who develope military gear. Remember the $10 screw, well the Romney budget is promising $100 screws to companies like Boeing.

How about the report last week which said the Pentagon didn't need tanks anymore and a bunch of Senators hollered that it would destroy jobs if we quit making tanks. I thought the Republicans said that "Government doesn't create jobs." I guess those Senators should eat crow!

Many states dont count absentee votes and most military personnel are absentee voters. This was revealed back when Gore challenged the vote in Florida. Maybe I caught it in the articles because at the time I was overseas and registered in Fl. When I researched a bit more, I learned that the regular votes have already been counted. Absentee votes are used when the race is close or other case by case situations. However, other stats also suggest that less than 20% of military people actually vote. If you know someone in military, urge them and their families to vote.. If they are out of their registered states, they should attempt to find a way to vote with the normal poll. If voting done by mail very easy to have it forwarded by family or friends.

I would hang on to that letter a little longer. I mean Obama has made troops his priority alright he is now trying to strip their right to vote if they are stationed overseas. WTF he did after all sign NDAA and Supports the Patriot act so yeah when his reign of destruction is over as" King" that letter may be worth more or worthless.

To the retired mark, if you retired from the military, and are 65 yrs. or over then you have TRi-Care for life at no cost to you, however, if you have medicare you must pay premiums on the medicare part A & B, plus you get very reduced drug costs, from $3.00 up to $22.00 depending on the drugs. Also, to the one that his brother is disabled, if he is disabled due to military service, then he's entitled to monthly compensation, the review for claims is a year after a complete assessment. COLA's are tied to the cost of living fiscal year beginning in July, SS didn't get a cola for three years until this past year. And one thing you haven't bothered to mention, all vets have access to free medical care at the VA clinics or Hospitals. Hang with Romney who thinks the Ryan budget is marvelous, and one of the provisions for cuts is a 13% reduction in Veterans Benefits. Stop the whining, President Obama has done more for military personnel than W and that War Criminal cheney ever did.

I just feel bad for most of my fellow Americans who are unemployed because of who they voted for.

Let's just call it what it is: A GOP-inspired and executed plan to create a pool of low wage employees for scab businesses (like yours?). Then again, I highly doubt your "business creds", considering the empty-headed statements, and such.

Bill -well considering how many of the weapons we knew about from UN inspections that we failed to secure...I think at least some of their origins are pretty obvious. And it's kind of our fault.

But I can't really believe people are trying to equate the weapons Saddam developed and deployed in the 1980's to the threat of an active WMD program for use by terrorists that we were sold to justify the Iraq War. All the weapons we managed to find had UN seals on them. Which means they were under wraps for a decade. That's simple a fact. There was no active program, tho he clearly would have liked there to be, and the UN told us so.

I mean you'll notice the lack of an Iraq invasion to go along with those quotes, which were basically made to justify our continued military presence in the Middle East (during a time when the military budget was being scaled back). I want you to explain what purpose invading Iraq served after 9/11. Saddam was no friend to Al Quaeda, he ran a secular military dictatorship with a fairly moderate view of Islam. Almost polar opposites.

President Bush had the political courage to order the "SURGE" which gave us the victory and Obama the ability to pull the troops home with a win ... Thank You President Bush. By the way Obama said the surge was a bad idea ... additionally Obama wanted to dump the returning injured troops into the private health system that was not set up to care for the tramatic battle field injuries ... how did Obama put it ... " they volunteered, it not like we made them go over there, they'll get what we give them " Isn't that a lovely sentiment. Also, Obama and his campaign made it impossible for the troops' vote to be counted for the 2008 election, so about 150,000 votes were not counted. Just like now, Obama is sueing to not give the troops and extra three days so their ballots can be flown back to the states in time to be counted. .... What a wonderful President

Vets websites are swamped with complaints about Bachmann and Bush cuts to vets and now the Ryan/Romney plans to cut vets benifits that they earned.

Capt tripp........great post. Simple search of....Bush lies nation into Iraq war, comes up numerrous websites and studies documenting all the lies(hundreds) that Bush and Cheney put out just to get war profits and Bush wanting to be known as war president, as "war presidents are remembererd."

Beelzebubby...........Bush had no courage whatsoever. He murdered our troops with lie into war. Our troops are the best in the world, Bush was the worst in the world sending troops in without a plan. No armour on vehicles, no proper bullet proof vests, no plan to keep terrorists and thieves from making off with all the weapons and supplies that they later used on U.S. troops. Al Franken was instrumental getting proper vests etc for our troops while Bush went back to Ranch and cleared brush with record amount of vacation days. Bush Cheney..war criminals known throughout the world.

You gotta love LIARS like Mark-44 and HJ-47 They mke a false claim about Obama not helping veterans,

      TODAY AUGUST 6, 2012 Obama:

The president will sign a law called the Honoring America's Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012.

The legislative package helps provide for the needs of veterans and their families with improved health care, housing, education and memorial services.

And that was just TODAYS act.

      On Nov 21st 2011:

President Obama signed legislation Monday that provides significant tax credits to businesses that hire unemployed and disabled veterans, the only measure in the president's larger jobs proposal to receive any bipartisan support.

The first bill also banned protest groups from protesting at Military Funerals (Westboro Baptist 'Church" being the primary target)

      What did Bush do

(Besides sending troops to Die based on 'reports' he knew and was told over and over lacked any credibility. Reports he sent to Congress with only his preferred slant and ignoring any contradictory evidence--of course the contradictory evidence was true and the crap he sent over was not)

He slashed VA benefits in 2003 by changing the health care from life to only two years

      http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2003/05/25/loc_VAhealthcare.html

He cut hundreds of jobs at the VA in 2005 (540 Positions) While soldiers were at war and would need it the most

His VA Secretary Nicolson had to resign when it was exposed that the VA’s clinics and hospitals suffered from hundreds of problems, including worn carpet, damaged floor tiles, leaking roofs and cockroach infestations.

Romney's ideas for Vets? He just put that same resigned-in-disgrace Nicholson on his Veterans & Military Families for Romney committee, the man will advise Romney on the VA...My GOD! Come on thats like getting Bernie Madoff to advise you on finances.

The Newsweek article (Via an archival website)

      http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2007/03/04/forgotten-heroes.html

The Right wingers in office only seem to care about a soldier as long as he is fighting (Well kind of if you forget the fact that Bush did not provide Body Armor or Amourized trucks and soldiers had to make do or get family to send the jackets)

I watched as the Obama campaign sued to not allow the military votes from Iraq and Pakistan be counted because it didn't arrive in time. McCain dropped his court challenge because it was obvious it wasn't going to make a difference. But here we are again Obama sue the not to count the Military Vote.

starsailing what a sack of BS you spew

You quote all these George Soros created websites full of BS and then act like it's the truth.

It wasn't US supplies that were stolen it was Iraqi stock piles and we didn't know where they all were and when we did get there many stock piles were emptied. Your right we should have gone in with a bigger force but I think Bush naively did not want the US to appear as and occupying force so we tried to use a smaller force a smaller footprint. Bush also under estimated how Islam and the people of the middle east are blood thirsty pigs, too willing to kill their neighbor to enrich themselves.

Our troops had vehicles, armour and bullet proof vest but after a couple of months we learned how they needed to be improved. within 5 months, all the Humvees had the additional uparmouring and within 6 months all the forces had the new vest with the additional side and sleeve protection along with additional armour carbon fiber plates. Obama, frankin, Martha, Kennedy etc. did nothing to help but to call our troops, desperately trying to contain a full blown civil war from barking out, in fact they made it worse by calling our troops ... OUR TROOPS ... occupiers and invaders. They also called for withdrawal which only made it tougher on our troop to keep a civil war in check. The Sunni, Shia and Iran knew if we pulled out there would be a power vacuum and that's when Iran started getting involved with funding the Shia ... Obama made it tougher on our troops and I believe by design ... Obama hates America ... Obama hates our military.

Getting back to the original story - Obama promised to 'support the military'. This can mean several different things. For Democrats it means not using the military unless they absolutely have to and protecting the SOCIALIST health care and retrirement programs they enjoy. To Republicans, this means constantly deploying our troops to anywhere that Haliburton can make money and keeping the populace in constant fear of some kind of Nuclear/Biological/ or Chemical attack. Then helping to protect Tricare from the government and the threat of socialism. Personally, if you use Tricare, Medicare, Social Security or some other SOCIALIST government benefit for yourself and preach about the 'evils of socialism' to everyone else you are a FREAKIN HYPOCRITE! I would love just one to hear of a Republican that either gives up their own Tri-Care or Medicare to 'enjoy the private sector' or proposes legislation to remove these programs. All of you screaming about ending Obamacare because it is 'SOCIALISM' need to work to remove Medicare and Tri-Care first. After all, if socialized healthcare is worse than the free market, as most right-wingers claim, and if the elderly and military deserve the best, as most right-wingers claim, then you should be fighting tooth and nail to remove these groups from the socialized health care that they are forced into. If, however, you think that these health-care programs are wonderful, but the average person doesn't deserve it, just the mililtary and the retired then say so. Say loudly, "Socialized medicine is awesome, but the loser middle class doesn't deserve it unless they serve our country!

This really upsets me. The guy enlisted the U.S. Army not the U.S.O. People serving in military units are often sent in harm's way; did Matthew not realize this when he raised his hand?

As for the mother, selling the letter so her son and soon-to-be- daughter-in law can 'get their footing (with new child in tow), didn't Matthew and soon to be daughter in law understand that it takes more than love to raise a child? Like having some 'footing' in life before conceiving a child?

A President's or nation's support for those serving in the military are a given.

And before I get nailed for being a heartless sob, I am a liberal Democrat and strong Obama supporter. I just believe that everyone is responsible for their actions and having a child before being capable of providing for that child is irresponsible.

A President's or nation's support for the military is a given. But it is not the President's nor the nation's role to financially support a member of society who chooses to have a child, then get married, all without having the capability of supporting either of them.

        Bruce,

I share many of your feelings. But as an older man, I also know that children born to young, unprepared parents is actually the norm in our society. I read an article recently which asserted that more than half of the children born in Indiana in 2011, were born to single mothers. My wife, who is a chaplain for a local girl's correctional facility, remarked that she was not at all surprised.

I do believe that young volunteers, and their parents, gloss over the "in harm's way" part of military service. What they see instead is: travel, training, medical treatment, and veteran's benefits (especially money for college). And, incredibly, most of the service personnel for the past 12 years have NOT received a combat assignment. Despite two wars. But a minority of those personnel have seen recurring assignments, some as many as four or five tours.

The young man does seem to have a practical goal. And good intentions toward mother and child. I wish them well.

Bruce, you sound like a conservative. You say that its not everyones responsibility to help a service member with their young family but what about your food stamp pres? Seems everyone is taking care of them. Hundreds of welfare babies are born daily. Out west, we call them Obamas kids. But, guess who pays for them? Those of us that work... How can you believe that everyone should be responsible for their actions and still be a liberal Obama supporter? Doesnt add up...

I would imagine a lot of it depends more on your personal politics than your job, and the military does swing Conservative, but I don't any soldiers all that angry with his handling of the military. Major complaints like the COLA adjustment are out of his hands, much as Social Securities was - changing that formula would take an Act of Congress and some new appropriations. It's tied to inflation, which has been negative during the recession. Food, energy, utilities are all down. Most things except for gasoline.

Sorry to all if my opinion offends but didn't Matthew realize that going to war would lead him to harms way? It's not like spending a day playing at Disneyland. People do walk around with weapons after all, why did it take him so long after voluntarily joining to question or inquire about someone taking care of his impending death? Doesn't this further show just how young, immature and ill-prepared these soldiers are?

I question this mother's depth in selling her son's momento. While I'm certain (or at least want to be certain) that her belief is in the right spot, selling a momento signed by the sitting president cannot be replaced. President Obama signed this for her based on a promise and conversation he was having with her. Personally, I would keep it as a momento for my children. Then again, my children would not fight in this war so the point is irrelevant. If my child needed a foothold for their marriage, I would give it to them without selling something of tremendous value, something I specifically sought out for their future, something I wrote to the President of the US for their benefit for.

Then again, perhaps I'm an entirely different type of parent than she is. I would never sell a letter I received promising that my child's life would be a "priority" ever. No matter who signed it. In fact, I would highlight where it stated my child would be a "priority", frame it and hang it in the hall where everyone who entered my home noticed that MY children were a PRIORITY. Then again, perhaps that's just me.

I read your statement, You are not for the Government giving money to people that have children before getting married and having the money to pay for that Child. So I guess you don't believe in Welfare which is the biggest Government Program out there give money to people that have children, not married, on drugs, some never worked a day in their lives, dropped out of school and other things. At least this Man put his Life on the line for this Country it he can't get help then who should??? I come from a family that Servied in the Miltary and still put their lives in harms way some are Police and Fireman. They became Police and Fireman after the served in the Military.

Yet someone who sit on there A$$e$ can get Welfare, SSD, SSI and never work or did anything to help this Country yet they get everything handed to them.

This Country has become a Joke to the World Since the Man in the White House took office. He kisses so much A$$ to the wrong people. He should be Helping the people that pay taxes, serve their Country not other Countries and people that only get off their A$$ to buy junk food from the store with the Food Stamps they get.

By the way I'm a Democrat. I didn't vote for him the first time and won't vote for him this time. He has Screwed up this Country it will take most likely my grandchildren to fix his mess. Also I think we should put term limits on all people that we vote into office. I'm tired of the same people in office year after year.

Hot it is not too credible when you spell College with an A and say you went 5 years....and you did it twice so it is not just a typo!

Actually Hot never said they went to college, They said they have 1 child who went to college for 5 years.

Still to discuss education and not even know how to spell College is not good form.

I believe anyone can get a job who really wants one, because you can always create your own job.

For some, unfortunately, that is out of their ability. It takes something more than that, it takes drive.

obama is just a total loser and should be impeached along with pillosi&reid and the constitution is outdated ginsburg. He runs his mouth with out thinking.I'll be glad when he's voted out in Nov. and all the rest of his stooges, maybe we can be proud of this country again.

          #3.18 - Wed Aug 8, 2012 6:19 PM EDT

To be impeached you have to commit an impeachable crime.

That doesn't include supporting policies you personally disagree with.

Beezle you can call it whatever you want. My mother is a MSgt in the Air Force, and she'll be voting for the President again. Mostly, maybe, because she thinks the GOP is insane. I'm sure she knows plenty of Tea Party soldiers as well.

            #3.19 - Thu Aug 9, 2012 8:48 AM EDT

Capt Tripp...I think there are many avenues to impeach Obama over...

            1) Leaking confidential information on an illegal raid into an Allied Nation.

            2) State Sanctioned assignation of a Terrorist that could have been captured and made to stand for his crimes.

            3) His part in Fast and Furious where US guns were supplied to Drug Cartels and found at the scenes of murders. Shame on him for hiding behind Executive Privilege.

            4) I think Congress needs to make an inquiry into Solardyne to see where the half a billion in Government Guarantted Loans really went If a company can't make a profit off of 500,000,000 then something stinks and people got away with a massive crime....

So this is just a short list....anyone who suspects more please add to the list because not only is Obama the worst President ever...my guess is there have been personal profits made that are hidden in a sea of shell companies and red tape and probably off shore accounts.

I think it is time that the RNC do what they are designated to do and that is to expose Obama for the man he is.....time to use the DNC strategy and dig for dirt.....start with education records, travel records and passports and criminal records under the name Barry Soeto.

              #3.20 - Thu Aug 9, 2012 11:34 AM EDT

Dig for Dirt is the Republican strategy, or do you misremember the 90's? They practically invented the never ending Fishing Expedition.

Also I don't think a boondoggle is impeachable, if we couldn't get Bush over Halliburton, I rather suspect Solyndra is considered small potatoes. (Solardyne sounds like you just finished watching Terminator 2).

I assume you mean assassination? In a military operation, kill is always an option. Such is war. I don't like it regardless, but it is what it is.

It's their letter, so they can deal with it as they see fit. Still, selling it to buy a car seems like a rather short-sighted reason, since auto financing can make a car affordable. If they hold on to the letter, it will likely appreciate in value, and should they still need the money down the line, they can sell it then. But, as I say, it's theirs to do with as they wish.

I think something is missing like the date. What could have actually made it more valuable is the knowledge that the soldier was posted at Ft. Hood and according to the article it was written before the attack there. It would be interesting to know if her son was on the base when the Dr went on his killing spree and Obama was on a golf course. That sort of timeline' if it were documented' could actually ad value to Obama's note.

JK from PA...you seem very sensitive....

As opposed to hosting bar-b-ques in Crawford, TX while our troops are dying in Iraq.

the point is that circumstances surrounding the item (the letter) in conjunction with events surrounding the writing of that letter could increase the value to a collector. As for Bush being in Crawford during his term...it is no surprise that the Government still functioned while he was there and he hosted many foreign dignitaries from the retreat. Don't you get a bit tired of Obama not being able to stand on his own decisions (good or bad)? Please don't forget that former President Bush was, boots on the ground, so to speak, days before Obama botherd to go address the troops at Ft. Hood. Which could again increase the value of the note in a timeline.

Humm.... Where was Gov Perry at during that incident?

I don't know why knowing where Gov Perry was when the attack happened on an United States Military base but it seems he was at the University of North Texas and his response to the incident happened minutes after the attack. He had already been in contact with Officials from the base and had offered them every assistance the State could offer. If you wish to bring Perry into the conversation I suppose it could be that the State of Texas once again is offering open access and any support necessary to assist the Federal Government in the aftermath of the tragedy with any and all resources available. In short he responded immediately, my guess before the President played the last hole.

                  Frankly True,

Sorry for my spelling errors in the word College you got me there but if you would have read my message you would have seen that I said I had 3 children my oldest did 5 years of College and no it wasn't it and art progect. She went to one College and all her credits did transfer so she had to take them over. I live in PA so not all credits transfer. She wants to be Anarchaeologist which takes up to 8 years depending what degree she wants. So she is working now to pay to continue her schooling. So she is not in College right now.

I find it funny you commented on my grammer and not the fact I was making about the Military not getting things from the Government but its ok to collect Welfare for year on end. I know people on Welfare for over 20 years and now their children are on it. My children are not on welfare but going to College and trying to get a job. My oldest has one my middle one is trying to get one and go to College at the same time. My youngest is not 16 so can't get one here.

Thanks for the grammar checking sorry for that misspelling. Let me know if I did it again.

                  Thanks

I have a note from the Whitehouse. I'm fairly certain that President Clinton did not sign it, but I still treasure it. I hope, for their sake, that someone who has the money decides to take the extra step and help out this vet so they don't have to sell their memento.

When times are tough, you do what you have to do in order to get by. If people did not do this, then pawn shops, auction houses and second hand stores would not exist.

Good luck to this couple. I'm sure that simply by getting the word out, he'll be able to find a job that he can do and be able to improve his life for himself and his family.

God Bless each and everyone of our military and veterans.

I have one from Reagan thanking me for my work on his 1980 campaign, it is signed by him personally.

I however do not treasure it at all, I consider that work to be the worst thing I have ever done in my life.

I have thought of selling it and donating any proceeds to a local AIDs Health Organization. But my shame has prevented me from doing so as it bears my name.

His ignoring the AIDs epidemic in the early days put us way behind, I hold myself partially responsible for helping him get in a position to do that. I knew dozens who could have been helped with a little earlier research and education. But Reagan did not even mention the word until October of 2007 after tens of thousands had already died. For this alone he can never ever be forgiven.

Uh it is up for auction. The job of an auction house is to publicize the items for sale. If they didn't--nobody would know what was for sale and nobody would bid.

Is letting people know what you have for sale suprising to you?

What happened to the military tribunals that he promised? How much did he pay off Seal Team 6 to keep quiet? Why were there no pictures, or TV coverage? There was PLENTY when Barack...oops I mean Saddam Hussein was captured (ALIVE)...Bin Laden was already dead and Mr. OBlame-a used the operation for political gain. The sheer gall and egotism of the man for taking all the credit for something that was purely staged. Amazing. So next time you LIBTARDS try playing the Bin Laden card...DON'T. The headline is also misleading. No where in the note do I see the President "Promising" to make our troops a priority. The note does state he will do everything in his power. And, with our recalcitrant do-nothing Congress, I wouldn't try to make that kind of promise either. I'm also curious as to when her son was discharged. And why in the world is this news anyway. When he enlisted, he knew what could possibly happen and should have known that the military assists families in the case of death while on active duty. All this information is provided to the enlistee.

The Mom wrote Obama...not the son so your comments about him and how he felt are irrelavent. His asking about funeral arrangements if he died likely meant he wanted his own wishes followed, the Funeral Home that takes care of our family has instructions on file for my funeral (Specifics that I want a simple casket, a very small framed photo placed in with me and two songs I want played)

I am sure she did not (as she said) expect such a personal response, it was a heartfelt note of concern and love for her son who could have been sent there and died there. I am glad she cares about her son. Most Moms do.

The more I look at this story the more I have numerous questions. 1- Story says mother wrote to President Obama Jan. 9, 2009. Story says vet served more than 5 years and is now discharged. I'm guessing he reupped for 3 more years for a total of six years, so, why is this a story about this mother since she evidently wrote to President Obama about 2 years after her son enlisted? If this had been a disabled vet I would be more concerned about his situation, but, since he never saw any actual wartime service, and was evidently stationed stateside for his entire period of service, so what. I'm a vet of the Vietnam era. I never served in a combat zone either. To continue on with this narrative. Note that the daughter is now a year old. If he was so concerned about caring for his "family", why didn't he marry the child's mother before this. This story just smacks of someone trying to get sympathy and a few bucks when their is no story at all.

alan it does not say when he enlisted. The mother wrote the letter when she was concerned about what might happen when he was sent over

That he was never sent happened after that fact

What smacks here is your attempt to belittle a soldier who served his country.

As the indians say Obama speaks with a forked tongue, he cut our military budget back to beyond the dangerous levels, fewer ships, fewer new planes and reduced troop strength, these dimwits never learn, 1917 Wilson: a year to sent trained troops to Europe and when there they had to use French artillery and machine guns as the US Army did not have enough for the troops; 1941 FDR, not even 75 B-17 bombers in the AAF, the U S Navy had to borrow English trawers to patrol the East Coast as the US Navy did not have enough ships to do it; 1950 Truman, did not have a full Marine division to transport to Korea, reserves from the army and marines had to be called up. This time there is no draft in effect and those who have already served will be called up once more... Yeah Obama really cares about the military. Some joke.

These posts are great for laughs. Just glad you guys aren't where you could really talk to each other. It could get violent.

I have to agree with "blue" regarding welfare and some mothers. I know because I was left with three kids -- 12, 14, and 15 years of age, two girls, one boy. Child support barely paid the mortgage and utilities. So, I had to pay for groceries, clothes, school supplies, etc. The kids ate balogna sandwiches a few times and I just ate plain bread, but I did not rely on welfare. I can understand why some women would. I did plant a garden, and luckily got a job with an insurance company, 40 hrs. per week, and with the patient discharge dept. of a large hospital on weekends (16 hours) plus half a day on holidays.

BTW, Bush had a real blow when he had only been in a few months and 9/11 took place. Also, I think there might have been WMD, but with all the present day means of communication, Iraq probably knew when we would be searching and put the WMD in a place we could not find them or sent them to one of their allies for safe keeping.

Loved the one calling Obama "President Vacationer". He does do a lot more traveling than the other presidents have. Most of it is for pleasure, I'll bet. I think I may be owned by China. Every time I look on the label of something I have bought it reads "Made in China". Thanks, Bill Clinton, for signing NAFTA. Really helped our job situation -- lots of unemployed people because of our factories, etc. being in China.

Gerri: NAFTA = North American Free Trade Agreement. Where the hell is China represented here?

Also, NAFTA ruffled the feathers of the unions, not corporate US. So to summarize, someone who leans or is fully tilted right would definitely be pro-NAFTA (i.e. pro-corporate owned, pro-slavery, etc), and anti-union. Your post misses the point, yet you did get an uninformed jab in at President Clinton. Typical.

When was the last time you saw an unemployment office? Most have been closed and to sign up all one has to do is get on line. Then every 4 weeks the person goes into a Career Center which is no longer ran by the government but instead contracted out to the lowest bidder. No longer do these offices assist anyone in finding employment. If you are dedicated enough to want to look for a job, once again you go online at a Career Center website and search on your own. If a employer wants to hire someone they have to post their own job orders. If you want to work on a resume, then once again, go online to a fill in the blank piece of crap. It is no wonder people can't or most cases won't find a job.

Okay, I see a problem with this story. This kid has been in the service for 5 years. He has a child and a girlfriend and no marriage. He must be at least 24 years old. Why do mommy and daddy have to do anything for him financially? He's a big boy now; he thought he was old enough (mature enough) to have a kid, so why isn't he old enough (and mature enough) to support himself and the kid? I'd almost bet that in 10-15 years that mommy and daddy will still be paying this kid's way.

Catherine, get off your high horse - you'll give yourself a nose bleed. Lots of young families these days need help from their extended families when starting out. And, it isn't unheard of for families to find themselves in bad situations through no fault of their own. Have they asked anything of you? No. Not everyone was born with a silver shoe up their asss like you and Mit.

erj, you call a family with a son that served our country in the military a POS?! Really? Your that stupid? Do you laugh at disabled Vets, too?

jbird, odd how you notice the negative comments by JK, but you fail to notice the hateful posts by your RWNJ buddies.

WhiteSoxFan, your less than witty play on words, such as libtard, only prove that you cannot argue your "points" with any logic or knowledge, and must resort ot sophmoric jabs. But, hey, if you don't mind people laughing at you...
