Trayvon Martin’s mother is pursuing more than $75,000 in damages from the homeowners’ association of the gated community where her son was killed, the Orlando Sentinel reported on Monday. Sybrina Fulton is also seeking money from a state fund set up to help crime victims and their families, it said.
The Sentinel, citing court documents, reported that Fulton filed a claim for monetary damages with the insurance company that covers the Retreat at Twin Lakes homeowners association in Sanford, Fla.
The insurer — Travelers Casualty and Surety Company of American — in turn filed a request of the federal court judge to relieve it of responsibility for the claim because of a clause in the policy excluding losses caused by or resulting in bodily injury, the report said.
Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, was shot to death by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman on Feb. 26. Martin was walking back from a convenience store to the home in the gated community where he was staying with his father when the fatal encounter took place.
Zimmerman, 28, is out on $1 million bail pending trial. He has pleaded innocent to charges of second-degree murder of Martin, and has maintained that he fired in self-defense after Martin attacked him.

The amount of Fulton's claim against the homeowners association is not explicitly stated, according to the Sentinel, but the insurance company writes in its filing that the "amount in controversy exceeds the sum of $75,000."
The policy has a $1 million limit on payouts, the Washington Post reported.
Fulton and her former husband, Tracy Martin, also filed a claim with the state's Crimes Compensation Trust Fund for emergency crime-victim assistance, the Sentinel reported, citing records released by the Florida Attorney General's office. The claim was approved March 29, the report said, but the dollar amount was not disclosed.
The fund provides payouts of up to $50,000 to defray costs incurred by victims of crimes, such as lost wages, medical care, funerals and counselling, according to the Florida Attorney General's office.

If the young man were white, the circumstances would still be tragic and would probably still have captured national attention: A young life cut short, probably because of some gun-toting cop-wanna-be. This young man's family has incurred legal bills, not to mention the funeral expenses. So assistance with those expenses via t-shirts, etc., is not out of line. And you are forgetting about the funds which Zimmerman and his scheming wife collected, then tried to hide - and lied under oath in a court of law about the amount they had collected. Defamation of what character?? Zimmerman has none. And apparently you don't either. Jacka$$.

If the 50,000 is something that the state of Florida gives victims of crimes by all means let them have it insurance policy or not funerals are high these days and with all of the controversy surrounding this case for months I am quite sure this family lost wages and they definitely need counseling its bad enough your child was murdered he didn't die of natural causes someone else took his life. NO money will ever bring him back but in a world where we have imperfect people judging whether a man is guilty or not guilty under the eyes of the court either way there will never be justice in this case. Because in my eyes either way he committed murder judge jury all that aside the fact is he pursued a unarmed teenager with intent to do something unlawful even if trayvon did/may attacked him with his fist not a knife not a gun no weapons insight there isn't a law that says if I am minding my own business and a thrill seeking flash light cop approaches me I don't have the right to feel threaten and protect myself with what god gave me and that is my hands (my bad there is in Florida). So Zimmerman can't take a (@#$) whipping just like a thug he would resort to a weapon (where the state of Florida gives them right to be gun slingers) so who is the thug in this case? All this innocent until proven guilty and money will not replace a life. My thing is until someone takes YOUR child's life in a manner such as this you tell me how comfortable you will be with the justice system and how your family will cope after such a tragic event I have kids and when this story took the media by storm the first thing I thought was "what if this was my son"? and when I thought about it that way which I still do it hurt me to my core I couldn't imagine the toll this has taken on this family let alone the media frenzy that has accompanied it, it has to be like living in constant pain with no end insight even after this trial is over this family will still be piecing its lives back together while we as society would have forgotten about this case all together. In my eyes this is a never ending fight because me and my husband are raising young black men as law abiding citizens and at any moment with the views of parts of racist America my boys could be a Trayvon Martin just because of their skin. This incident should be a wake up call for all of us this shouldn't end with Trayvons death it should begin there are cases like this everyday that get swept under the rug. Just recently a 21 year old was arrested for warrants he ended up dead in the back of a police car handcuffed and they said he committed suicide by his own hands while handcuffed. the young man wasn't suicidal and the cops claimed they searched him thoroughly but evidently the kid was a magician and he was able to hide a gun take it out his pocket and kill himself REALLY. People need to wake up this story is so much bigger, things need to change instead of moving forward with racism we are moving backwards because we fight for the wrong causes......I am done i could go on and on

I do feel sorry for this family I hope they get some closure from this civil case.
If the insurance company gets out of it then they should go after the homeowners’ association and place it in Receivership.
Perhaps now they would now like to consider a memorial park for Martin.
Money is not everything but it is how our system responds to a group who acts irresponsible or by acts of its members Zimmerman carried a gun and murdered a young man.
This law suite will make a difference and will stop other groups by checking it's members and reinforcing that this type of behavior will and can not be allowed.
So many have died due to guns it is time the Federal Goverment steps in and requires gun owners to go through Federal background checks before owning a gun any kind of gun weather it be hunting or personal protection. The Federal Goverment can set up a National data base that State goverments, law enforcement can check. The State's are ill equiped to handle this task due to budget problems.

Stephen, it's not the first time. Shortly after her son was killed, she copywrote her sons name. For money puposes. Also, I can't imagine either of the parent's pain but they have to share some of the blame. I'm sorry, if my son gets expelled from school for any reason and I don't care how small, let alone, not respecting his eldors and punching someone he should be listening too. My son would not be walking to any store, let alone going to buy candy. He woudl be so grounded it wouldn't be funny. The chores my son would be doing would make him wish he was in school, behaving.
I don't know what happened but my biggest problem; This country is innocent till proven guilty. GZ was guilty from the minute he was originally released. When the president, condems you, you're done. People say GZ stalked TM and TM was defending himself, ok. Coronor report says TM had no brusing on his body, he was not hit in any way, and the only injury was a cut on his hand, caused from hitting someone. GZ called the cops as he was instructed, he did follow TM but per the 911 call you can clearly hear him say ok and stopped following him, he even states he lost him, from that point TM was gone and should have been gone. Why was there ever a confrontation, if TM ran away and GZ lost him? Yes, GZ went above and beyond by chasing TM however, he did as he was supposed to, he contacted the police. Does a murderer call the cops before he kills him (he's not Sling Blade) and not to mention, they were on there way while he was on the phone, so GZ knew they were on there way, why chance getting shot by cops? He was originally released because because all the evidence pointed to self defense. If GZ is given a fair trial, which in all honesty there is no way, either for or against that he can get a fair trial as all evidence has gone public. Has anyone ever heard of a case disclosing all the evidence to the public, before a trial? Whether he's guilty or not, GZ will be able to sue a lot of people when this is over. People says he's racist, yet he spoke up for a dead homeless blackman, when that person was killed by the white son of a cop. His only crime, was going above and beyond.

Hey pentatuch, Zimmerman did not chase Martin down. He did chase him for a bit, but Zimmerman had stopped running and was walking to an intersection. It was then that Martin approached Zimmerman. Seems to me that Martin was the idiot to approach someone that had been chasing him.
And yes, the truth will come out in court.
I'm not an attorney and I assume that the attorney handling this monetary suit knows what he's doing, but I'm confused about the amount asked in the suit. I would think it would be larger. The whole thing is very, very sad. I hope that the young man's family can some day find some way to be at peace.
if the amount asked for is too large the judge would deem it frivilous and consider it moot!

This may be a very poor comparison but does anyone remember Damian Williams? He was the 20 year old who caved Reginald Denny's face in with a cement block after Willams and 3 others dragged him from the cab of his cement truck. He didn't nothing. He is face was so disfigured one of his eyes wat almost im a sinus cavity. Williams, seeing a news helicopter, got up, flashed gang signs and danced over Denny's prone body. Of the 4 he was the only one to go to prison...he got 10 years. But because our criminal justice system n Califoria is so screwed up ( I should know, I worked there 20 years) he did less than years. Less than 18 months after he got out he murdered a rival drug dealer. I wonder why that got no press? He got over on his 10 year sentence, they got him for mayhem and not even for attempted murder. Though they probably can't mention it in Mr. Zimmerman's trial, the media attention showing her greed and character may help his case. When I was a child I followed the Bierman rule, you don't cut through an old man's yard to get home or that old man will show up at his front door with a bb gun or curse at you. It wasn't the fact that old man Bierman was a bully or crazy, it was the fact he was trying to teach us kids to be respectful of other people's property--perhaps Trayvon's mom should have taught her son the Bierman rule.
