Would you really expect Obama to say anything else. The point is that the Boy Scouts are a private organization and are free to set their own membership policies. It does not mean you have to agree with the policies, but you should respect their right to their own views. This is no different than a religious organization that discriminates or any number of other affinity based groups that have certain ethnic or cultural requirements to be a member. As for tax status, they are a non-profit organization just like many others and enjoy the same tax free status. You can not say they do not deserve tax free status without advocating for the removal of tax free status from religious groups or other organizations with racial or ethnic background requirements for membership.

Under the IRS rules, all non-profit organizations are eligible for tax exempt status. The Boy Scouts take no public money, all privately funded.

So, Therman.........If the BSA disagrees with what you want, then they should be treated differently by the IRS as other non profits are treated? Why don't you just sign a petition to do away with the 1st Amendment and be done with it?

To all those saying that private businesses have the right to discriminate: Do private businesses have a right to say "No Blacks Allowed" these days? Or bans on other minority groups? No? Even if you think being gay is a choice, how does that make it OK to discriminate, particularly because this has something that has 100% to do with someone's private life and 0% to do with the lives of other people. If you actually knew anyone who taught at a private school... which you obviously do not... then you would know that they are private businesses, run on the model of achieving the highest profit. Thus, you have teachers who are told to "go easy" on certain students because the parents have donated large sums of money, or experienced teachers replaced by cheaper alternatives. This happens across the country at prestigious private schools. Of course, the children who attend these schools do not really need an education, as most will simply live off their trust funds. So the lack of education is usually irrelevant in these instances.

Catholic school are different, as they must adhere to certain rules within their organization. Of course, they also spend a good amount of time teaching students about ancient pagan stories, which were later adopted (or stolen) by Christianity. It can be argued that the time spent on these fairy-tales would be better spent improving math and science scores, to be more competitive with other countries. However, people like you place an unexplainable amount of importance on your fairy tale. But you also believe a man was swallowed by a whale and survived three days in its belly... so your reaction is not surprising.

My point is, discrimination and bigotry were put in the dictionary because there seemed to be a need for the word. Get real. Obama doesn't give a damn about the illegals or gays. The first two years of his administration, he had the power to get anything he wanted. He only cares about votes.

I am a conservative independant. I have gay friends and many of them will vote for Romney. Some are small business owners. They aren't looking for handouts and don't see the government as the answer. The country is in the ditch. The Boy Scouts is the least of our worries.

Idaho - I don't agree with the policy either but let me tell you this, other than this rule the scouts do not openly discriminate. There are no rallies or meetings where gay bashing takes place. And if a youth (under 18) wanted to join who was probably even openly gay I don't think much would come of it, but it would depend on the situation, though the openly flamboyant gay probably isn't going to be interested in the activities that the scouts do so.... but anyways the whole sexual orientation issue is not even a part of the general scouting activities, which is the way it should be. But rather focuses on positive goals and skills to help their members become productive individuals in life.

Remember, the main group of scouts are the youth members, not the adult leaders, and activities are focused on leadership, team building, community service, ect. For the most part troops act on their own and follow the guidelines set forth by the National Council.

There are gay people in scouts just not open about it and trust me there are those that other members know are or might be gay and its not an issue unless someone makes it one. Make it clear there is no internal police organization or anything the goes around outing gays and banishing them from scouts. Only if someone makes a stink about it and really only if its an adult leader.

I guarantee there are also many members who don't support the policy either. But the fact is, unfortunately, there are many financial supporters that would drop the scouts if they change their stance at this time (don't worry it will change in the future, just give it some time). And then what? Let the scouts crash and burn? Will the gay community step in and replace the financial donors that left? Are there that many gays wanting in scouts?

Again, I don't support the policy but this is more of a national level issue. The scouts don't openly protest gays and for everything else they do that is very positive I'd say we can give some leeway here, especially if this is all that is happening, could be way way worse.

Beside, this is a trivial sideshow issues for gay rights. Leave the scouts alone and go after the government, that is where the focus needs to be, such as letting gays marry, I support that, now go after the gov and let the scouts be. My understanding is there are many in the gay community that don't like thing like this to happen and see it as more of a negative than a postive and not really helping gay rights.

All I'm saying is don't even attempt to throw the scouts into a good for nothing group like the KKK. Not even close, that is apples and oranges my friend. If you have not been to a scout function, you may want to attend sometime, it sounds as if you have no real insight into what scouts really do, but I could be wrong.

As far as the president commenting on this, he would be better served to leave this be and focus on more central issues at hand. Just more political sideshow BS that BOTH candidates and parties do to excuse themselves from their failings and having to deal with real problems. Like I said I don't agree with the policy either but in the way it is administered and how it falls in relation to the big picture of gay rights I'm not going to let this blind me and automatically label the scouts a hate group. I'm and Eagle Scout and damn proud of it, it took alot to get where I did. Doesn't mean there aren't things about scouts being a member that I didn't like or agree with. The organization is too big and involved to be 100% cut and dry without gray areas and things one might not like.

The organization will be painted with that broad brush because they have a governance stating they will not allow a class of people into their group. Obama is overstepping his bounds. The BSA is a private organization. They get to discriminate and be as repugnant as they please...so long as they don't receive special treatment, funding, or special tax breaks from the government that is.

Boy scouts are generally from what age to what age? Most kids eligible to be scouts are too young for any sex at all. so how can a person that has not yet reached the point where they would have sex, be gay or straight? THEY ARE KIDS!!!!! We have a difference of opinion but there is one difference: I am not intolerant to YOUR opinion. I don't say YOU cannot be in a homosexual relationship. All I say is it is unnatural so I don't want MY child to be forced into viewing that type of behavior. You, on the other hand, not only disagree with me you feel it appropriate to tell me what MY child should be forced to be around. That is intolerant. That is a bigot.

Funny thing about conservatives is we have NEVER told you what you can and cannot do in your personal lives. All we ask is that your personal beliefs that we may disagree with not be FORCED upon us and our families. So you say conservatives are intolerant but you are the actual intolerant people. If a company SUPPORTS gay marriage, for example, conservatives don't boycott and try to force them out of business. We simply say "we disagree but that is your right to believe that way". But when a company supports conservative values (Chick-Fil-A for example) why can't you say "we disagree but that is your right to believe that way". No, not to a liberal. A liberal believes it appropriate to close down and boycott ANYBODY that disagrees with liberal philosophy. So maybe YOU need to work on not so much being a bigot.

Tell me genius, if you are not an active member of a church or give a donation to one, how is your tax money supporting them? Church's are exempt from government support, again because of the separation clause. Did you never take and pass American Government in school? The Boy Scouts is a private organization with a religious affiliation, they have their rights and it is none of the governments or Obamas business, those gay rights opponents have their 5013c tax exempt status, and for what reason? Mr Obama leave the boys alone you have a country to run, the boy scouts deserve to be Que equal to religion and equal consideration to separation of church and state, in this case being religiously orientated organization, back off Obama you are stepping out of line, besides the gay community can start up their own gay organization any time they want. this is just another attack on the constitution.

I have read some comments here where people have bad-mouthed the President because he voiced HIS OPINION and I am so disappointed that everyone is allowed to voice their opinion (including here) but the President should not? Who really cares what O'Bama's opinion is on anything. The only thing he has done consistently during his time as President is lie every-time he opened his mouth. He has not "earned" the respect of most "Legal" U.S. Citizens and is ignored by other World Leaders. IdahoSteve-- you're upset with the Boy Scouts because you apparently did not have the ability to obtain Merit Badges and move past the Cub Scouts. The Boy Scouts have the "Legal Right" to set their own standards and apparently you fail to "measure up" to those standards. Again, this issue has nothing to do with being a Christian, but apparently you "fear the Cross" because you have no understanding what it means to be a "Christian". However, if you or your family needed assistance, you more than likely would not turn down help from the "Red Cross". O'Bama and others forget that this Nation was built on the foundation of "Freedom of Religion". People came to American to escape Religious persecution but then people like you and O'Bama arrived.

It would be fine to let gays in on these activities, but theres always some pervert that has to use the situation for thier private little game!! Duh!! to IDAHOSTEVE- call anyone a bigot you want but here is the definition of equal opportunity as per the goverment written law - Absence of discrimination, based on race, color, age, gender, national origin, religion, or mental or physical disability. no where in that definition does it say sexual preferance, not saying I agree or dis-agree with the Scouts but why should anyone get special treatment because they have a same sex life partner over someone who is heterosexual and until it is written in law that sexual preferance is included the Scouts have the right to tell this women she is not allowed to be a scout master. Now as far as the ACLU lawsuite that made the scouts use their own private sectors, they need set a lawsuite against every organazation including GLAD and boys clubs of america, but lets not forget they too are politically motivated and corrupt as well

Politicians need to butt out of these types of issues. If the BSA were breaking a law or they were hurting someone, it would be different, but they aren’t. They are standing by their beliefs and they should be allowed to. If you don’t agree, don’t support them but stop trying to force your way in. Any population who wants to can always start their own group.

To the people who keep calling them bigots – there are black only groups, Hispanic only groups, Asian only groups, etc. There are groups that require a certain education, a particular profession, a particular country association, a particular gender, a particular religion, etc. By your definition, everyone is a bigot, including yourself. But you’re wrong. It’s about being with people who share your interests, your beliefs, and your values. The BSA is no different. I understand you don’t agree with their values, but that ok – 1) no law requires you to do so and 2) they don’t agree with yours either.

I am a bigot! I really don't care what anyone does with their life, after all it is only they who can live it and in my beliefs, they that will have to answer for how they lived. I am a former Boy Scout and Explorer, I was an Eagle Scout before moving into the Explorer program and worked very hard to get there. I was involved in Scouting from the age of 8 or 9 when my parents enrolled me in Cub Scouts and continued into a leadership role until I turned 20. Later, when my sons were old enough, I enrolled them and again took up a role in the Scouting program along with my wife. In all those years I can never once remember being taught or teaching to discriminate against anyone. In all those years I remember being taught and teaching to accept everyone on their own merit and get beyond skin color, gender, nationality, and religious affiliation. That might be surprising to some as the BSA is a Christian based organization. It is also affiliated with the international scouting program that has branched throughout the world! Someone commented on not having scouting in Indonesia, well that is incorrect. It may not be Boy Scouts of America, but it follows many of the same rules and disciplines that BSA does. In fact, periodically Scouting holds a world jambory or gathering where Scouts from all nations may attend and interact with each other promoting peace, friendship, and understanding. This is the Boy Scouts of America! An organization dedicated to constructively teaching young men tolerance, hard work, responsibility and leadership!

They have the right to set their own membership guidelines, and as an organization have determined that they do not wish accept or promote a homosexual lifestyle, which is against many of their founding Christian beliefs. Their stance on this issue is the correct one for this organization. Those of you who cannot accept their rights or their decisions based on their founding beliefs are far greater bigots than ever the Boy Scouts could be.

Why is it "intolerance" when someone voices their disagreement with your beliefs about gay people, but not when you voice your disagreement with theirs?

The whole new argument put out there that "liberals and progressives" preach tolerance, but don't practice it when people disagree with them on social issues is tired and empty. It is an argument used to direct the conversation away from the facts about the issues because they have no solid ground to stand on written into the constitution. Again, we are governed by the constitution and not the bible. When they cannot find a solid argument outside the bible to justify their position, they point fingers back and say "you are being intolerant of my beliefs". It is an ok point because we are being intolerant of their beliefs, but I do not think being intolerant of discrimination is a bad thing. I am proud to be intolerant of discriminatory statements and actions. I am also intolerant of beating women, cancer and drowning puppies. I am a terrible person.

A lot of pedophiles do not associate with the LGBTQ community. Pedophiles, those who like small children, usually do not have a preference.
