Susan G. Komen, breast cancer foundation, shakes up leadership

CEO Nancy Brinker stepped into a new management role – the latest fallout at breast cancer organization Susan G. Komen for the Cure after the foundation's decision to cut Planned Parenthood funding and then reinstate it. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

Liz Thompson announced she would step down as president of the Susan G. Komen Foundation in September.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure shook up its top leadership Wednesday announcing the resignation of its president and shifting role for its CEO and founder, Nancy Brinker. Two members of its board of directors also announced their resignations.

Komen President Liz Thompson announced plans to leave the organization in September. Meanwhile, Komen Founder and CEO Nancy Brinker will shift to a new management role as chair of the Komen Board Executive Committee when the search for a new senior executive is finished.

Komen also said that Brenda Lauderback and Linda Law, who have served on their board since 2008 and 2009 respectively, are leaving the board of directors.

"The legacy will continue," Thompson said in a released statement. "It has been a privilege and an honor to serve in this role."

Regarding new role, Brinker said, "I was asked by the Board in 2009 to assume the CEO role. Three years into that role, and 32 years after my promise to my sister to end breast cancer, I want to focus on Susan G. Komen's global mission and raising resources to bring our promise to women all around the world."

ARCHIVE VIDEO: Komen Foundation receives harsh backlash

The shakeup at the top comes after a controversial decision earlier this year by the national foundation to cut breast-cancer screening grants to Planned Parenthood.

The national Komen headquarters announced in January that it was pulling funding from Planned Parenthood because of a government investigation, citing a probe launched by a Florida congressman at the urging of anti-abortion groups. Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., wanted to look into accusations that Planned Parenthood had improperly used public funds for abortions.

Nancy G. Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen for the Cure in honor of her sister. She has been shifted to a new role, the foundation announced Wednesday.

Komen was blasted for the decison. Days later, the national organization reversed its position.

Cheryl Shaw, Executive Director of the Puget Sound Komen chapter, told KING 5 in February the local chapter was opposed to the funding guidelines from the beginning.

Did Komen overstate cancer screening benefits?

"When the decision became public, we wrote a letter to our national office and told them we were totally against this policy, that it had an adverse effect on our work here in the Puget Sound area and it really took us off of our mission,” Shaw said. “Our mission is to save lives and end breast cancer forever."

Unfortunately for Komen, its local chapters and the millions of women they support by promoting breast health and cancer screenings, the damage was done.

What I don't get is since when is being against abortion considered to be extreme? Seems it should be the other way around.

Also, for those who are so "pro-choice" about women and their bodies, why isn't there an equal push for the legalization of prostitution??

Just wonderin'.....

Absolutely! If it's their body, which it is, why can't they use it any way they want? It's not really different than modeling or posing for Playboy, or even dressing down as a waitress to get better tips. It is using their body to generate money, so prostitution should absolutely be legal. My guess is that they have a lower abortion rate than the general public.

To a liberal, abortion is the norm.

To a liberal this is a normal thought process. Me Me Me. The difference is your example "only" involves you. Abortion involves another, no longer just you. Don't get pregnant and it doesn't involve others.

I'm sorry just an american. It's not just their bodies we are speaking of. It's a life, not a choice. There's a baby in that woman. She made the choice to have unprotected sex. How stupid can a woman get!! The child that she kills is not responsible for the actions of her mother! She could be killing a Mozart, or Rembrandt. Even worse she is killing a loving child.

Reading all of your responses, which is like reading some adolescent papers: selfish, self-centered, thoughtless. First, it takes two people to make a baby, not just a woman. This has NOTHING to do with prostitution, unless you guys are entering into the ring. However, it is the woman who gets pregnant if two people have unprotected sex. That's right, guys. It's your responsibility too--can be for 18 lucky years!! If a "man" decides to have unprotected sex with a child under the age of 12, and that child ends up pregnant, you tell me who is better off if that pregnancy goes to term. Not the child of 12. Something tells me if you are that man who makes that decision, the resulting child is not going to be the next Mozart, Einstein, or Hippocrates. Nevertheless, it has nothing to do with a woman's "stupidity," whether one is "american," whether one is "liberal," or conservative. Everyone who engages in unprotected sex will at some point become pregnant, and if they're really unlucky, come down with a few diseases, and it is the irresponsibility of the man AND the woman. Fact.

If a woman self induces an abortion, should she be punished?

Just an American... "dedicated to terminating lives." Disgusting, inflammatory and just an outright lie.

Look, it's very simple. My wife is a 15 year survivor of throat cancer. She didn't think smoking 2 packs of Kool Kings a day would hurt her. NOT!! My wife and I are supporters of The SBK foundation. We participated this year at ST Louis. We believe in what the foundation is doing. We did not know about them giving money and support to planned parenthood. We are going to have to rethink giving our money to them now.

It's really simple. IT'S A LIFE, NOT A CHOICE! There are many types of contraceptives available for free or low cost. If a woman is stupid enough to get pregnant then she should have to live with that decision. PERIOD! The only reasons for abortion are life threatening for the mother or if they know that the child will be defective or born with a major, very major, problem. I personally include rape victims in this category. Rape victims did not make a decision to have unprotected sex. They were raped and not responsible for that rape or child. Sorry, I don't think a woman should be forced to have a child produced from rape. It's her choice in this case. But, having said that, if you play with fire you might get burnt. Sure it's fun and games, and tickle and giggles, until you are 18 and realizing that you are going to have some serious responsiblities for the rest of your life. My wife and I did that and we have never regretted our decision to have our children. I love my oldest daughter with all my heart. I love my other daughter just as much. Sitting here thinking about everything that we would have missed out on if we had aborted Julie makes me so very sad. I am glad to no ends that we decided to go down the path we did. Being a parent is not easy. It can be scary and heartbreaking. It can be expensive. It is worh every bit of pain and suffering that we have been through for the last 35 years.

Just saying that the love we have for our children has kept me going when all I wanted to do was toss in my cards and run away. A man, a real man, does not run away from the responsibility of his actions. It was fun and games. It turned into a lifetime commitment.

Should abortion, other than the exceptions you mentioned, be made illegal? If so, what is the punishment for a woman who gets an abortion anyways?

          #166.1 - Thu Aug 9, 2012 12:37 PM EDT

Just living with herself after she has an abortion is punishment enough. The guilt, etc., may not even set in for several years, but it WILL be there.

The punishment in our legal system should be for the murderous doctors who perform them, especially in 2nd and 3rd trimester. There is no accountability for abortion providers, evidenced by the Philadelphia clinic that was FINALLY shut down last year.

As is typical with government programs, there is no accountability and we all end up paying the price, and especially the innocent.

Just a Normal Person - the preferred punishment for a woman who gets an abortion is that she may die or be rendered infertile for the rest of her life. That is the scenario the anti-abortion crowd is looking for. Once abortion is totally illegal then women will return to back alley abortions and coat hangers. Abortion won't go away but safe abortion will.

Those are very real risks, Anita, and I actually have a friend who had an abortion at 16yrs old, and is now 48 and could never have children.

Abortion needs to be a rare occurance instead of the form of birth control it has evolved into. No abortions should EVER take place in the 3rd trimester, and after 20 weeks (when the unborn child feels pain) should also be a no-no.

I will make this short and to the point, while abortion is not pleasant, if you are a woman, you have a right to decide. It is YOUR body, not a politician's who has absolutely, positively, no business having authority over another individuals choice when it comes to this matter.

Looks at the stats concerning neglected children, abused children, and children who are failing to thrive. It will only get worse if we take away this right to choose from women. I recently read an article that stated over one third of the births in the US are accidental in an average year.

If you have to ask what this has to with Susan G Komen, then you haven't been paying attention. Long live Planned Parenthood and everything for which they stand!

I totally agree!! And I'll go one step forward from that, NO POLITICIAN has the right to funnel MY hard earned tax dollars into programs such as Planned Parenthood that I wouldn't be choosing to "individually" donate to otherwise.... ACA has mandated that women receive contraceptives at virtually no out of pocket costs, therefore diminishing significantly the need for services such as Planned Parenthood anyway, don't you agree?

If you know someone who is in the fight of her life for breast cancer, there are so many ways to help. Drive her to a treatment, take her children to the zoo or a play, cook a weekly dinner, or clean her house. Do whatever you can to help this woman restore "normal" to her life. One hundred % of what you give will go right to the source. Remind your friends and family of the importance of screening mammograms and how routine exercise, good nutrition and weight reduction are effective means to decrease the incidence of breast and other cancers.

Take the politics out of this disease, and help the person.

Don't believe me. Call your local PP, pose as a potential client, and find out for yourself.

PP does not do mammograms. Period. They do not. They will provide a clinical breast exam, which is when a nurse, or nurse practitioner, or doc, or medical assistant uses their hands to feel and examine the breasts. They will teach you to do this yourself, at home, if you wish. You can also look on the internet to find instructional videos. They are feeling for masses or lumps.

If they feel something suspicious, they will advise you to get a mammogram. They can direct you to mammogram providers. Some PPs will even help you make an appointment. But that is it. They do not do the mammogram. No PP anywhere in America has a mammogram machine. They will not pay for your mammogram, although they may be able to direct you to a non-PP source for help paying for one.

The clinical breast exam is a normal part of any annual gynecological exam. If you go to your OB/Gyn, or a family practitioner, or a family planning clinic, or a PP, you will be provided with a clinical breast exam. PP is providing nothing out of the ordinary.

That's why I feel that PP should not receive Komen funds. A clinical breast exam takes 1-1.5 minutes. It's a standard part of the annual gyn exam. Give the money to sources that provide mammograms to enable them to provide free or reduced pricing. Give the money to sources that provide biopsies of lumps since many women can get the mammogram but can't afford to go any further. Sorry, but money given to PP for breast cancer is wasted money. PP is a great organization and provides great services, but breast cancer isn't their primary focus nor is it their forte.

Komen Refused Funding for Breast Cancer Prevention Vaccine

Nancy's Twitter states that she promised her sister to put an end to breast cancer and she raised millions upon millions of dollars to do it. Yet the Komen foundation refused funding for the world's first preventive breast cancer vaccine that could do just that; put an end to breast cancer!

The Pink Vaccine was developed by Dr. Vincent Tuohy of the Cleveland Clinic and is 100% effective in preventing breast cancer in mice. Further, it reduced tumor size in mice that already had breast cancer. It's our biggest hope yet and it's sitting on a shelf at the Cleveland Clinic awaiting a mere $6 Million in funding to get it to clinical trials in humans.

One in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime yet Komen refused funding three times for our best hope at preventing it. My tax deductible contributions are going directly to the Cleveland Clinic.

I can't stand that SGK made the association between breast cancer and the color pink. I hate the color pink and I hate seeing it on everything from coffee cups to fuel delivery trucks. For me, pink is a color assigned to a gender and an age - little girls. Breast cancer affects adults - including men - and they have nothing to do with cute, adorable, giggly little girls invented by ad agencies.

Too little too late. I will no longer donate my money to the marketing machine that is the Komen Foundation. They don't need my money. They have swindled plenty of other people and will continue to do so. I support PP, but I could respect the Foundation for making a decision to withdraw support of PP based on the investigation or Moral Values. Everyone is entitled to have an opinion. What I do not respect, is then backtracking on the decision because they were losing money from donations. That's when they showed me they cared more about the profitability of the cause than the cause itself. I don't agree with the CEO of Chic Fil A, but at least he didn't turn around and say he supports gay marriage because he had bad days of sales.

This is factually incorrect. Komen was bullied by militant leftists who believe in abortion as their religion. Komen lost money AFTER they backtracked - participation and donations are down between 30 and 40%.

While the Komen Foundation may have started off with good intentions, it seems now only a corporation that pays its top women hundreds of thousands of the dollars that are raised in walks, while seducing the rest of us into thinking they are doing good work. I lost a dear friend to this disease, and she participated in every walk in her area to raise money for them. It breaks my heart to think that the money she raised is only padding the pockets of the Presidents, and the VPs in the organization. The only difference between this corporation and those on Wall Street is this is run by women, not men. Shame on the Komen Foundation for their fraud on the American women. Shame on us for trusting in these women to do good.

I'm amazed at the way some people think! They link PP to abortion when such a tiny percentage of women seen at PP actually are there for abortions, yet you insist they are flocking in to get abortions like crazy.

Crazy is that you read your bibles but little else in the way of information of subject you act like your experts in.

Until you've walked a mile in the shoes of a young girl who's been raped and made pregnant and has no way to support herself or live 9 mos being pregnant -- you really have no right to judge her. You don't know her fear, her plight in life. How about the young woman who works, has a little baby and is forced to leave baby with anyone who comes along and the baby is beaten to death? You think that's better for the baby?

You are all fools. Go down and volunteer at a clinic or home for unwed mothers instead of typing judgments and throwing stones - do something positive to help. What does the bible say about judging? How 'bout "do unto others"? Ya, you forgot those huh, they didn't fit your hatred.

While I agree with your sentiments, I believe the bible, one way or the other, needs to be taken out of this arguement altogether. We are not a theocracy and making arguements for or against using theology makes this unresolvable. Conservatives want the government out of our lives so just get out of them. Don't come up with exceptions based on your personal preferences. Liberals want choice, so let us choose. Both sides will get what they want if they are honest in their convictions.

Some women will choose to have abortions and some women will not. Anyone may like or dislike the decision a particular woman makes, but it is hers to make and if the consequences are positive or negative, she has to own those consequences too. That is what staying out of other people's business is about.

So if a fetus is a fully formed human being and aborting it is murder, how come anti-abortionists make exceptions for women who have been raped? Its not the fault of the fetus that she was raped. The arguement that she is not responsible for the pregnancy and can therefore get an abortion flies in the face of the arguement that abortion is murder. If a couple who practice birth control get pregnant because the birth control failed, are they then given a pass to have an abortion because they were being responsible in preventing pregnancy but an unintended pregnancy resulted nonetheless? Abortion to save the life of the mother is comparative morality. If the absolute bottom line is that a fetus is a life and we can never take that life, then the health and life of the mother should be left in the hands of fate or God?

Being raped may not be a choice, but having an abortion is. Does that make anti-abortion advocates pro-choice?

The only people with credibility in this arguement, amazingly, are Roman Catholics who oppose abortion for any reason and also oppose capital punishment.

Everyone else is practicing comparative morality based on what they would consider convenient. And all of it is based on religious beliefs about the role of men and women. It still boils down to: If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one. I'm really tired of arguing about the exceptions to abortion that make it okay only with all kinds of claims of rape, what is a critical health problem for the mother or the fetus, what happens ultimately to the unwanted children, etc. People who believe in liberty, personal responsibility, less government should be in support of laws protecting abortion, or better yet it should not even be a legal question.

If a woman who has an abortion is going to hell, that is her choice and quite frankly none of your business. When did we start legislating salvation?

What I don't get is since when is being against abortion considered to be extreme? Seems it should be the other way around.

Also, for those who are so "pro-choice" about women and their bodies, why isn't there an equal push for the legalization of prostitution??
