Miami cannibal victim recounts brutal attack for first time

Jackson Memorial Hospital/Getty Images

In this handout image provided by Jackson Memorial Hospital, cannibal attack victim Ronald Poppo, 65, shows the extent of his injuries while still in the hospital on June 12, 2012, in Miami, Florida.

The 65-year-old homeless man whose face was viciously chewed off by a naked man in Florida can be heard speaking for the first time since he was assaulted by the so-called “Miami Zombie” in May.

“He attacked me,” Ronald Poppo told police of Rudy Eugene, in a recording obtained by CBS Miami. “He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically, that’s all there is to say about it.”

Doctors say Poppo lost nearly 80 percent of his face, including his nose, was blinded in the attack and also was inadvertently shot by police in the chest.

See the original report

“He mashed my face into the sidewalk,” Poppo said. “My face is all bent and mashed up. My eyes, my eyes got plucked out. He was strangling me in wrestling holds at the same time he was plucking my eyes out.”

After several surgeries at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Poppo was transferred to Purdue Medical Center, a long-term care facility also in Miami. A fund set up to help cover Poppo’s health care costs raised more than $100,000. He is now awake and alert.

The attack happened the afternoon of May 26 when Eugene, not wearing any clothes, approached Poppo near the highway. That’s when police say Eugene started chewing off Poppo’s face and only stopped when officers shot and killed him.

The 18-minute attack was captured by a security camera on the building that houses the Miami Herald.

Miami-Dade Police Dept.

This undated booking file photo made available by the Miami-Dade Police Dept. shows Ronald Poppo before he was attacked.

“For a very short amount of time, I thought he was a good guy,” Poppo said. “But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn’t’ have a good day at the beach, and he, he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don’t know.”

Poppo’s statements were recorded during a July 19 interview with Miami homicide Det. Sgt. Altarr Williams and Det. Frankie Sanchez.

Sgt. Williams asked Poppo what Eugene was saying when he attacked him.

“’You, me, buddy, and nobody else here,’” Poppo recalled. “’I’m gonna – gonna kill you,’ Or something like that.”

“He just started to scream and was talking kind of funny talk for a while too,” Poppo said. “He must have been souped up on something.”

A man was shot to death in Miami after eating the face of his still-living victim. WTVJ-TV's Diana Gonzalez reports.

An autopsy of Eugene revealed no human flesh in his stomach but a number of unidentified undigested pills were present. Although police had initially speculated that the street drug “bath salts” may have been involved, preliminary toxicology reports were positive only for marijuana.

Both the cause and motive for Eugene’s bizarre behavior remain unknown.

Poppo said Eugene did not have any type of weapon. He also said he did not recall ever meeting or seeing Eugene before the day of the attack.

The police investigation revealed that Eugene had an extensive criminal history, having been arrested eight times since the age of 16.

Clearly, one of the craziest, most unbelievable things that I have ever heard of.......and I have heard some crazy things! Thankfully, the attacker was killed by the police. Funny though, after the incident happened, all the accounts I read about the attacker from people who knew him said what a nice guy he was, they never saw something like this coming (as if anyone but the attacker could ever even think of something like this), yada, yada, yada. I mean, I know that people can have a psychotic break but it's just difficult to think that the attacker never exhibited some sort of strange behavior prior to this horrific incident. To go from zero to eating a person's face off, just does not compute. Gotta feel for the victim. Must be hard for him to sleep at night.

LSD or something similar perhaps? maybe a new type of drug that doesnt show up in a tox test? the whole incident when you think about it, doesnt really make sense, right down to the "unknown" pills. all the guy had was a minor record and was a borderline bible thumper according to his gf, and others. To think about chewing on some one is a bit off the rocker, to do this? Some thing is not being told as to why this person, or any for that matter, would flip as he did.

ya he had a minor record but the media says he has a extensive criminal history...they say 100% he not on bath salts but they have unidentified pills.... anyone involved with the media, and the govt is a zombie that is a fact that cant be denied.. They all get paid pretty good money to keep thier mouths shut and to not take a stand for what is right for us the people of the land called America. But dont you worry none, in the future the zombie apacolypse is coming... that is also a fact the zombies cant hide from, History does not lie.

americanchic--who is this "they" of whom you speak? Who is trying to take away your right to pack a gun?

Seriously--the trend most recently has been to overturn restrictions on gun ownership, not to make the restrictions tougher. Are there some very few people out there who want to restrict all access to guns--yes. Are these people formed into a group that is well-financed and which is having success in acting on their wishes--no.

If you seriously believe that there is some nefarious group out there which puts you in danger of losing your right to own and use a gun, then . . . . Well, I would make a crack about how ignorant or delusional this is, but the thread monitors have a habit of taking people to task when they call people on their spreading of misinformation.

Simply because there are people who claim that "they" are trying to take away guns does not mean that there actually is any "they" trying to do so. Find a well-organized and well-financed group in favor of restricting all access to guns, one that is even half as powerful as the NRA, and then we'll talk. But, since I know you cannot find this phantom group, I won't hold my breath.

There are a few groups trying to restrict (not ban) access to handguns, but they have been dealt serious losses in the recent past and are pretty well stymied. There is no group trying to restrict, much less ban, all access to all guns. Let's try living in the real world, okay?

@beanathome - ever heard of the United Nations you dullard ?

Since 1961 they have been pushing this Global Disarming deal. Only UN police/soldiers, whatever you call them, would be allowed to have any weapons or firearms. That is a FACT and was recently in the news again because theyre getting more smaller countries to sign it. Around the time of Katrina the US military was raiding homes that were in dry, untouched neighborhoods and taking all guns, with the orders to shoot any US citizen that resisted. That is FACT and has been happening already. Wake up, there is video of exactly what Im talking about.

Could not help but wonder why only $100,000.00 was donated to this miss fortunate when his life is totally destroyed and can never be salvaged, he will probably spend the remainder of his life in a 8x10 room under supervision of a care giver that could care less about him, reliving the memory of that attack blind and disfigured. when we can be so generous to assist a buss monitor with a $700,000.00+ for having her feelings hurt, what is wrong with this picture, is it because this man was already down on his luck? or is it that now that he is blind he would not enjoy a vacation? I am really disappointed in our standards.

I agree with D Buck-2239568 - this says something about our society. We give more money to people who do not need it than to someone truly in need all because of his "social or class" status, which seems to me, very hypocritical. We send money all over the world to help poor, homeless people but we can't help our own right here in our own neighborhoods. I am disgusted with much of what goes on in Florida these days. I am glad I no longer live there, and honestly feel ashamed to say that I was born and raised there. So pathetic how little people care about one another, even on here with the idiots who make a joke of this. This poor man didn't deserve this and he should have our utmost compassion and kindness. You people who joke about other people's misery and think you're better than everyone else, will get a big dose of karma one day & good luck with that.

@D Buck-2239568... Down on his luck? This guy has been homeless for over 3 decades (as mentioned in several other articles). That's not being "down on his luck" that's making a lifestyle choice. And while yes, what happened to him is horrible, he is living a better life now than he has in over 30 years since he has a bed to sleep on & regular meals and probably will for the rest of his life due to the fact that he was "inadvertently shot by police in the chest". They'll have to take care of him for the rest of his life out of fear of a lawsuit, which will inevatably happen because that is our society of today.

Hey Boopers - Apparently you forgot the 4/2/2012 Supreme Court ruling that you can't sue the cops anymore for anything related to doing their job.

That includes shooting the guy in the chest. That ruling gave the cops carte blanche (or whatever that phrase is).

My biggest concern was how sick the other guy was and WHY, with so many arrests at such a young age, no one thought this kid may have needed some mental help. You know he didn't do this because of pot and the pills were fairly undigested. The guy was sick! If we, as a society, had gotten him help like we should've for that guy in the Colorado case, BEFORE a crime of this sickening depth had been committed, it quite probably never would've happened.

Schizophrenia is a horrible, insidious disease. For us as a society to turn our backs until they act out and then only prosecute, is a what Internet teasers would term a "Collassal Fail".

Boopers, your post is about as insensitive as they get and way too quick to pass judgement on someone else. You have no idea why this man was homeless. How and in what way is he now living a better life? He is totally BLIND not to mention the mental and physical pain he has to deal with 24-7 along with all the other physical and psychological problems like NO FACE!!! On top of all of that he was "inadvertently shot in the chest by Police"!!!! Oh yeah, he has a better life now than when he could walk around by himself and see the world. The Police officer who "inadvertently Shot him in the chest" will probably never be held accountable for his "inadvertently" shooting an innocent victim of a horrendous crime. Compassion for your fellow man is obviously something you have absolutely no understanding of. I feel sorry for anyone who has to be involved in your narcissistic judgmental life. Ronald Poppo sounds as if he holds no animosity against the perp who blinded and disfigured him or any animosity for the negligent Police officer who ""INADVERTENTLY"" shot him. His life is forever changed! He is now blind, disfigured and condemned to live totally dependent on the compassion of others for food and shelter. HOW IS THAT A BETTER LIFE FOR HIM?

The bus monitor got that much money because her pain was recorded and went viral. It is another thing to read about something and another to have actual footage of the event. Has anyone seen the footage claimed by this article that came from the building across? You put that out there along with the pic in this article and that money will just start pouring in!

homelessness is a choice. just because most of you fear it doesn't mean it's a bad one. we don't live a linear reality where all must follow a path. i'm considering giving everything away and walking the earth. less comfort, but also less exposure to the sickness of the "organized world". and i know how to make good money.

            homelessness is a choice.

For a few people it is, but most people do not choose to lose their job, then their home, and then their car.

Actually Calicoast, I think you have the anomaly backwards. People who lose everything due to bad luck do not stay homeless for 30 years; at least not at this point in this country. Those who stay homeless for extended periods of time (many years) are in that position as a result of their own choices; there may be an anomaly to that rule but I doubt it.

I was homeless for about 14 weeks not by choice (well, maybe a little by choice, but it was be homeless or turn to crime to support me and my wife). I would not want to go through that again, but I do not regret a single moment of it. I worked day labor ($40 check at the end of a work day, using my mom's address on my job application). I met so many awesome people who saw me as a person and not a bum and opened their home to me and my wife. I learned so many awesome lessons about how awesome and beautiful average people are yet we typically now just walk or drive by without a second glance.

We chose to get off the streets through an assistance program in Houston, TX (S.E.A.R.C.H) that helped us restart our life.

Now, the reason I relate all of this is because there are so many people who have little or no choice to go homeless, yet the opportunity will come later to rebuild their life. But some people refuse to rejoin society and instead go feral--begging and selling newspapers or what-not becomes their career. For example, when I lived (homeless for awhile, actually) in Austin, TX, there was a guy who held up several cardboard signs. Because of his wit, he actually made decent money begging. Signs like: "Why live in a $200K house when you can live under a $700K bridge?", and "Family kidnapped by ninjas, raising money for karate lessons", among others.

JQ 12261891 had this to say:

Actually Calicoast, I think you have the anomaly backwards. People who lose everything due to bad luck do not stay homeless for 30 years; at least not at this point in this country. Those who stay homeless for extended periods of time (many years) are in that position as a result of their own choices; there may be an anomaly to that rule but I doubt it.

Wow--just, wow. People who stay homeless for 30 years, typically, are mentally ill. They do not choose to be mentally ill. They just are. This gentleman--the victim--as I understand it is also mentally ill. Perhaps this attack has worked as something of a shock treatment and has stabilized his condition--perhaps not.

We have mentally ill people who are homeless because of Ronald Reagan--who, yes, claimed that such people had made the "choice" to be homeless at the time he was completely gutting our mental health care system. I wonder what would have happened if Reagan had not had so much money and a family to care for him--and then developed Alzheimer's. Would he have "chosen" to be on the streets? Perhaps there was some karma acting on Reagan with that one. I do not think that he "chose" to live with that disease--though I suppose one could say that his choice to continue living rather than committing suicide (as some people who find out they have Alzheimer's choose to do) was what caused him to "live" with it.

There are some people who are vagrants and choose to be that way--it's fine. Some people are just gypsies, and that's how they choose to live. Such people are very much in the minority when it comes to homelessness. If you see someone who is homeless for that long, it is almost certain that you are looking at someone with a mental illness (and, yes, substance abuse can be--though isn't always--a manifestation of a mental illness). The only "choice" such people have made is to continue living rather than jumping off a bridge.

Well, let's just hope that you don't have the gall to call yourself a "Christian." That would be adding insult to the injury you do the homeless by thinking that they are homeless "by choice."

So, a fund has been set up to assist this man and $100K has been raised which is great, but a woman in NY that was bullied by a bunch of middle school students (also horrible but in a different way) has a fund that is over $700K, both are bad incidents, but I believe the man with the face eaten off may have a great need for the money. I thought of this very same thing! The funds raised, while very nice, are a little disproportionate to what the victims went through. Not to diminish the cruelty that was shown to the bus monitor, but this man will have major ongoing medical bills and is in much more need of serious $. I do agree with SDMN also though...a very small upside is that at least he will have food and shelter while he goes through a torturous recovery.

I think it's because she was more of a helpless victim, where as this man for some reason took his clothes off with his attacker. That's what I'm wondering: why did Poppo remove his clothes? Because, as he phrases it, he thought his attacker was 'a good guy'? He took his clothes off with an angry man who was 'talking funny for a while'. He has suffered horribly and I feel sorry for him, but his poor judgement is at least partly responsible for what happened to him, and I'm probably not the only one who can see this.

Also, more people can relate personally to the bus monitor's suffering than to this, which for most is an incomprehensible horror.

Poppo was fully clothed, the attacker was the one with no clothes on. And he too was helpless, he was trying to sleep when he was accosted by the young and healthy attacker (look at Poppo, do you honestly think he could hold his own with a man 1/3rd his age who quite obviously had a screw or two loose?). Fully read the article before you start criticizing the victim. And to the others, I too wonder why so little (comparatively speaking) has been donated, $100,000 is going to be nothing in comparison to the actual cost of his operations and rehabilitation.

I'm in awe of this story...his face chewed off, eyes plucked...WTF. One of the worst details of this story is the toxicology report showed the attacker was only high on pot since the pills in his stomach weren't digested yet. How F'in crazy does someone have to be to hurt and maime another at all, but to this extreme? Not that there is any excuse for this brutal attack, but it would somehow make more sense if the freak was on a smorgasbord of drugs.

It's absolutely ridiculous for the article to suggest that he was only on marijuana. He had a number of "unidentified" undigested pills in his stomach. His preliminary toxicology report says THC. How long does it take to identify the pills? How long does it take for a full toxicology screening? 2 weeks, or a month at most, I would think. I doubt NBC will ever give a full report on this, as it would undermine the reefer madness campaign they are currently involved in.

A toxicology report only finds what it is looking for--particularly a preliminary one. If there is no protocol to test for a specific substance, it won't turn up in the first round of testing.

The second round is probably going to look at all substances--if this was a designer drug of some nature, or just a bizarre interaction of several substances the man took, they will probably find it.

He will never fully recover, and at best he will have to try and live on just over $670.00 a month on SSD, no he is screwed for life. his $100K is only a drop in the bucket for what this is going to cost, and to think his last visual memory is someones teeth. I wonder if its possible to do a eye and tissue transplant although I doubt he will ever see again.

I am just a bit tired of the horrific, senseless jokes about anyone who has become blinded by trauma and/or brain damage.

My daughter was only 23 years old when she became permanently blind and with severe nerve damage in both her legs after surviving a near-fatal fight with viral encephalitis. Kristen Leigh was in a totally non-responsive coma for eight months, including the initial four weeks on full life support. Basically she spent a total year in the hospital, then three more months in a neuro-rehab facility. After that she was an out-patient for physical therapy for another two years, which slowly and painfully and with her determination and strength was able to learn to go from learning to sit up, stand (she was left with drop foot and must wear a hard brace on her right lower leg), walk with a high padded roller resembling a football tackle block, then her wheelchair, four-pronged cane, three-pronged cane, etc etc. etc.

By the way, how she survived at all is not medically explained, but when her brain began to re-wire itself slowly (and a horror to see day after day with her hands and feet tied down screaming ... it's not a pretty sight) and she came fully out her coma gradually and with her FULL INTELLIGENCE, PERSONALITY, SENSE OF HUMOR all of came to us! "They" (those doctors) told us over and over again so many times that if she even lived she would be in a "total and permanent vegetative state". They changed their tune of course but when she was able to leave the hospital they had a conference with us and said that they all could not medically explain how someone with the severity of her brain damage caused by massive swelling of her brain (only her lower brain stem was functioning and minimally) could leave a hospital alive and with her full intellectual, speaking faculties, etc. functioning. They said it was medically impossible and they could not explain it.

So quit with the BLIND jokes! How would you young immature pups out there like it if YOU were 23 and wake up after eight months in a coma to find out you're blind, have no sense of smell, and can barely feel both of your legs except for excruciating nerve pains shooting down them?

P.S. Fair warning for everyone: You *WILL* lose every bit of money you have, regardless if you have "good" insurance. Unless you are a millionaire or higher. But we have no regrets. We got "our Kristen" back after being told so many times that "the Kristen that you know and love is gone".

RE: Tiva's moronic post. I see that a large number of people have already responded to your moronic and misinformed statement, so I guess there isn't much more I can say. The attacker did, in a sense, get the death penalty as the police shot him to death (you'd know that if perhaps you read the article before posting such an inane comment as you did. Is is that your reading skills are lacking, or just your compassion for your fellow man. The homeless man who was attacked did not provoke this attack, and if bus drivers can get $700K for being "picked on," I certainly believe the victim should receive much more than $100K in donations. I hope someday you can find some empathy and compassion to your fellow man, but for now you are the moron.

I watched the initially released video of this, where you can see the police officer approach the attacker. He is obviously disturbed by what he saw, as he drew his gun and jumped back several feet. He shot the attacker once after telling him to stop the attack, and the attacker responded by growling at the officer and continuing his attack. The officer was so unnerved by this, as I believe just about anyone would be, that he unloaded his gun on the attacker. Apparently one of those bullets struck the victim in the chest, hence the use of the term 'inadvertent'.

That still doesn't make it okay, I mean I can totally sympathize with the officer but in a situation like that where the attacker and the victim are so close to one another you damn well better make sure you line up the shot just right before you pull the trigger.

I'm positive the cops never meant to hit the victim with a bullet. If it was me I would just be grateful to the members of law enforcement who came to my aid. I'd gladly take a bullet in exchange for a cop saving my life. That particular cop in no way shot this man in malice.

Why does the media try to make crap up to freak people out? Do they have teenagers writing this stuff? Seriously...

The attacker bite the guy and gouged out his eyes. Thats not cannibalism. No where is it reported he was trying to eat the victim. Cannibalism is eating Human flesh. Seems to me he was out to maim or kill the victim, not eat him. Biting is not all that uncommon in a fight. However, biting big chunks out of people and gouging out eyes isnt very common. This is just an extremely brutal and less common then most assaults.

Obviously the attacker wanted to either kill this guy, or permanently mess him up. I am willing to bet this attack wasnt random, and there is more to this then the victim is saying. Maybe hes guilty of something himself? People dont get that vicious for no reason. Even psychos have a reason, a delusional reason maybe, but its still a reason. This guy wanted to hurt the victim bad.

What exactly would you do to someone that would justify or give reason for him to gouge out your eyes and bite off your face? Seriously...I'd like to see your rationale for your bizarre comment. You are willing to bet? What? Your eyes or your face?

Who cares if he knew him or the guy asked for money or whatever? Seriously, he came up to him naked and pulled out his eyes and chewed off his face. Are you on something yourself? Who cares whether they said eat or chew? Did they find eyes and skin at the scene? Geez, get a grip. Trying to make this about whether they said chew or eat and trying to blame the victim is pretty odd in itself. Nice and classy, too.

I think that's what the one in China did, and its certain the one in Canada had some rump roast, you know this sort of thing is happening more and more frequently, spooky. Pink Floyd was right about that hallway. there is a very fine line between human and animal, as people justify their actions to the actions of animals and give themselves the right to stoop to a lower level we will see more of this. but its OK because animals do it and after all we are by Darwin's theory all just Primates. except me of course, and some others that have their own beliefs.

You do realize, freedom, that zombies don't eat random fleshy parts. They eat BRAINS. Why do you think he was only biting at the top and front of the victim's head? And that he had no flesh in his stomach? He was trying to get to the brain, and would have if not stopped by multiple gunshots. And I wonder how many times they shot him before shooting him in the head.

This is not happening more frequently--it is being reported more frequently. And, the gruesome picture should not have been available to anyone clicking through--it should have been behind an image that said "disturbing picture" so that one would know what one was getting before one saw it.

The media has been reduced to this kind of behavior to compete against the other forms of immediate entertainment. Though, personally, I'd rather watch another video of kittens with shark fins on them or idiots trying stunts and tripping over their own feet.

Try to distinguish between reality and reporting--the media reports what it wants to report. Right now, they are into "cannibalism" stories and "zombie" stories. They also have a stupid obsession with "deathly peanut butter allergies" (though death by peanut butter is pretty freaking uncommon and other conditions are more common and more dangerous and a lot of people don't understand them), "vicious pit bulls" (though this is more a manifestation of there being lots of pit bulls owned by lots of irresponsible people), shark attacks and so forth.

You don't actually think that the national media has as its goal a desire to keep you properly informed about issues that are relevant to your life, right?

Don't we have some hungry animals at the shelter. He apparently likes to attack and eat like an animal so he would understand. He needs to be bound so that he cannot defend himelf. No point in hurting any innocent animals. At least he could be of some value.

What does any of that mean? Aside from the fact that the person who did the attacking is DEAD, your statement (or question?) makes zero logical sense.

Its obvious that some people skip the article and go straight to the post, this story has been going on well over three month's the face eater is dead! OK got that dead! as in no longer alive Killed by the police at the scene, shot dead!! gone.

The question remains what caused this Demonic episode, and will we see more things like this. its like a discription of hell itself, did someone open the damn gate again, we were told to not open the gate.

If a real zombie apocalpyse happens and the dead rise up, will the Miami cannibal be the one zombie that DOESN'T try to eat people?

One thing for sure, I'll never say "Eat my short!" to anyone again.

What a @!$%#ter of a day. Whenever I think I'm having a bad day, I'm going to re-read this story.

"Doctors say Poppo lost nearly 80 percent of his face, including his nose, was blinded in the attack and also was inadvertently shot by police in the chest."
