AWOL soldier plotting Fort Hood attack sentenced to life

Naser Jason Abdo

A soldier convicted of amassing bomb-making materials and plotting an attack on a restaurant popular with soldiers in Fort Hood, Texas, was sentenced to life in prison on Friday.

Army Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo was AWOL from Fort Campbell, Ky., when he was arrested with bomb-making materials on July 27, 2011, at America’s Best Value Inn and Suites in Killeen, Texas, near Fort Hood.

In May, a jury found him guilty on six federal charges: attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempted murder of  U.S. officers or employees and four counts of possessing a weapon in furtherance of a federal crime of violence.

U.S. District Judge Walter allowed Abdo to represent himself at the sentencing after the 22-year-old told him in July that he and his attorneys weren't communicating effectively, The Associated Press reported.

According to the criminal complaint, Abdo had smokeless gunpowder, pressure cookers, clocks, shotgun shells and other components that could be used to build "destructive devices," and an article titled “Make a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom.” He also had obtained a military uniform with Fort Hood patches.

In a recorded police interview, Abdo said he was planning to pull off an attack in the Fort Hood area "because I don't appreciate what my unit did in Afghanistan," according to an Associated Press report.

Defense attorneys argued for acquittal on grounds Abdo's plot did not go past the planning stage.

Abdo joined the army in April 2009.

But in 2010, he refused to deploy to Afghanistan with his unit, telling reporters at the time that he had come to believe it was at odds with his Muslim faith.

Abdo was granted conscientious objector status, but the Army put his discharge on hold after they allegedly discovered child pornography on Abdo’s computer. The private disappeared shortly after that case was referred to a general court-martial.

In an interview from jail with WSMV TV in November, Abdo said he was set up by the military and they never planned to let him leave.

"I felt like the only way to freedom or justice was martyrdom," he told the television station.

He began plotting to kidnap and execute on camera a high-ranking member of his Fort Campbell command who had participated in the Afghanistan mission, but then changed targets when military police learned about his purchases at a gun store, he told the WSMV reporter.

During Abdo's trial at the U.S. District Court in Waco, the army private shouted out the inspiration for his planned attack, according to The Los Angeles Times coverage:

"Nidal Hasan — Fort Hood 2009!" he yelled in an apparent reference to the shooting rampage allegedly by Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan at a medical facility on the base in November 2009 that left 13 dead and 32 wounded.

WSMV reported that Abdo had previously denounced that attack.

Hasan's trial is to begin on Aug. 20.

Oakdog...Either you are very stupid or you just wanted to start a firestorm of discussion (well done). This POS should never have been in the Army in the 1st place. His recruiter should go to jail with him. He will more than likely serve his sentence at the Ft. Leavenworth prison. This prison is where they send soldiers who have been convicted of crime. The prisoners confined at Ft. Leavenworth have made mistakes, but I'm sure they will not like having a POS like this around them.

How is it that we can convict and sentence this guy yet Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan is STILL not sentenced and his Fort Hood terrorist actions that killed 13 and wounded 23 others in November 2009....and was called "work place violence" by Obama and not a TERRORIST ATTACK because we have to be PC?????

And WHY did the FBI ignore evidence???

Probably because he's an Hassan is an officer and Abdo was merely enlisted? There is a difference in the speed and way that "justice" is given in the military if you're an officer or senior enlisted. Just ask Col. James Johnson...

sorry zenfreedom but there is no excuse and you pointing out other bad behavior to excuse current bad behavior is not very zen of you. mohammad was a child molester as he took a 7 year old prepubescent as his wife along with others, islam is also a fake religion, stealing from the old testament and using propaganda to indoctrinate their followers. jesus didnt take a child wife, moses didnt molest children, abraham didnt watch and god does not condone but in islam its anything goes as long as your the man.

both nidal and hassan are both islamist terrorists but somehow that guy who shot up the sikh temple is a terrorist even though the definition of terrorism from merriam-webster does not fit. when you have people screaming allah akbar before they kill then chances are they are a terrorist using their religion to kill you. islam is a cult following as by the action of the majority of muslims keeping quite about the actions of their fellow subjects. where are the muslim leaders denouncing every intentional killing by their members? i know there are some who speak out but a few out of a billion plus members is nothing.

history tells the story about islam and we have been at war with them since the beginning, their only existence is to dominate.

That is because the army is responsible for prosecuting hasan while it appears that this loser was convicted in a US federal district court. The article didn't state that the army would also try him for his military crimes, but that would follow his facing charges for the more serious federal crimes first. They both deserve swift punishment for their crimes and it is total BS that hasan has been allowed to go this long without facing trial.

sorry zenfreedom but there is no excuse and you pointing out other bad behavior to excuse current bad behavior is not very zen of you.

I don't recall excusing any bad behavior. I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy of those throwing stones about something they most likely have no understanding of outside of moronic talking points.

mohammad was a child molester as he took a 7 year old prepubescent as his wife along with others, islam is also a fake religion, stealing from the old testament and using propaganda to indoctrinate their followers.

And I'm sure being that x-tianity was the first religion on earth... oh that's right it wasn't, lol. Silly me, I forgot there are many religions that predate x-tianity (even Judaism predates x-tianity, so who's is the fake religion?). And again, you run into the many evils that have been committed in the name of x-tianity throughout time.

And as far as your definition of the term cult there are many southern churches that fit that term. The criminal responsible for the attack at the Sikh temple is just as much a terrorist as anyone in the KKK, the 9/11 bombers, the suicide bombers in Afghanistan, the criminals who target and harass women seeking abortions, and Hassan and Abdo.

history tells the story about islam and we have been at war with them since the beginning, their only existence is to dominate.

If that's the case then x-tianity is no better than anything you're claiming against Islam.

wow zen, you really are the liberal secular model of American hatred.

Hatred because I point out the despicable hypocrisy being presented? And the military doesn't use .45's anymore.

swag, you'll never convice this liberal of anything, as long as he has the "coexist" bumper sticker and hatered in his heart for people that have faith.

Lmao, nice sentiments considering there was nothing about hatred in my posts at all. Merely facts to point out hypocrisy and ignorance. I don't have alot of room in my life for ignorance and it's a terrible thing to watch it bandied about on a message board and no one steps to correct it.

Sorry Zen but it seems it is you that have been indoctrinated by your teachers. Abrahamic religion indeed. Do some research and you may discover something, like how islam was fabricated through plagiarism which is why many parts of their koran read almost word for word like the old testament. You may also discover a little something about the prevailing pagan cult in mecca during the time of Mohammad.

    #1.25 - Sat Aug 11, 2012 10:49 AM EDT

Islam is just as much plagiarism as x-tianity is a perversion of Judaism (which predates x-tianity). I'll give you an "E" for effort, but epic failure at understanding anything outside of moronic racist talking points.

Gee, if you only knew something other than that perverse islamic propaganda you would know that Christainity sprang forth from Judaism and they share a common history, and it's obvious that you will cling to the notion that islam is something it is not.

So go forth and worship allah and his daughters. Oh wait, the daughters were edited out of your koran. You know, those pesky satanic verses. It would be correct to consider that among other things, it is islam that is a very twisted perversion of Judaism. Can the truth be racist?

This guy sounds more like an eight-ball than an objector on religious grounds. He just wanted out of the Army, used his religion as a pretext.

Is he Moslem by birth or was this some kind of jailhouse conversion by an alienated loser?

            #1.33 - Wed Aug 15, 2012 3:08 PM EDT

My bad! Jason Abdo is Arab/Moslem by descent, at least on his father's side. He's also a natural born sex criminal, his father having been deported back to Jordan after conviction for soliciting a minor for sex. [Unclear whether male or female.]

Which does not preclude his also being an alienated loser which is likely.

The armed forces are very much in need of men and perhaps can't inquire deeply in their past life and psychological state. Still, I think this antiquated concept of taking troubled youths into the military to ":straighten them out" probably needs to be jettisoned. The armed forces aren't in that business.

I'm about halfway through the Koran at the moment and so far it reads a lot like the Old Testament. It's not the religion; it's how you interpret it. The human desire to prove "my group is better than your group" will come out any way it can, sometimes violently.

Interesting, I haven't heard the military put anyone to death in quite some time. According to the database, there have only been 6 people sentenced to death in military court since 1988, and there have been 10 people receive commuted life sentences, who were sentenced to death between 1984 and 2010. There have been NO executions in the US military since 1955.

why would he be a martyr? he killed people and thus should be killed himself especially at a time of war. muslims dont need a martyr to commit murder, they do it just fine.

we cant fight a war if our politicians cant see the enemy for who they are, politicians have never won any war for that exact reason and we will never see victory as long as politicians are controlling the war.

we are currently at war with islam and these two guys are muslim who tried and succeeded in killing non muslims as they were instructed to.

Reading isn't as much of a strong point as it used to be. I don't recall the article stating that Abdo killed anyone...

And since when are we at war with Islam? We should be at war with ignorance, but those with any sense are woefully out numbered.

Too many in the echo chamber that apparently didn't read or if they did, failed to understand the reference way back to the Fort Hood shooter and his slowly approaching trial. At least he's paralyzed. Not likely to frolic with too many virgins once he gets his rightful death sentence pronounced and carried out. Can't be too soon for me. These hypocrites that eat food and have shelter provided by the American taxpayers and are all the time plotting to kill innoc ent Americans ("infidels") who never did them any harm should all be kicked out of the military once their ethnic ties are discovered. Unfortunately these pos join Army for I guess a way to make a living then find out their "muslim" religion won't condone whatever it is they find objectionable in the Army. Could it be it's not that easy to be in the military? Not that much of a bed of roses? The man doesn't rule the woman in the military because all the "guys" are usually pretty much together and it just isn't that much fun.

Debbie, I believe the basic problem is that military service isn't popular here. It's only the military-industrial complex that keeps pushing us to get involved all over the world, maintain bases in dozens of countries, etc.

So with the services constantly short of recruits, they still get misfits, mental cases, petty criminals or those just looking for a soft job with good benefits, like free child care. This shortage is especially acute among those with language or other skills a modern military needs. Hence, Maj. Hasan. Also, it's no secret that most of the Army's Arabic language translators and intelligence specialists turned out to be gay, which was the main reason for the removal of all restrictions on homosexuals in the military.

Hassad's trial they're following the letter of the law. They want no reason for him to get an appeal, and basically fast track him to the firing squad.

Why didn't the military discharge this man from service when they had the chance? He didn't want to serve based on his own viewpoints of fighting in Afghanistan. The military could have still turned him over to authorities for possessing child porn and he would be going to the same place he's going to live at now; prison. Something doesn't add up here.

Maybe the material he downloaded was on a government computer, not enough in the article to decipher. As usual the details in this story are very weak, they just want to get the story out.

Believe it or not, the military has it's own justice system to deal with criminals or people who otherwise commit misconduct in the military. We don't simply have to turn them over to some other authority unless the crime itself is outside of the scope of the military justice system (which I've never ran into a crime that fits that description).

The reason he most likely went AWOL is because his case was turned over to JAG and he was trying to avoid prosecution.

If you understand how the military works the story isn't weak in details. Every detail needed to understand what is going on is there. He joined the military, realized he didn't want to deploy, got busted for having child porn on his computer, didn't want to face the punishment (and embarrassment) for that, decided to go on some idiotic suicide mission so he could go out in a blaze of his own glory, and failed at that. Now he's just looking for attention. Screw him. He's getting the karma he earned, imho.

I am glad he wasn't discharged. Then he would still be secretly trying to destroy Americans. Who knows how long he would be in for child porn. Now he will NEVER get out.

Great comment....stereotype much? I served two tours and on both occasions served very closely with those of the muslim faith. They were some of the best soldiers I dealt with and they did everything required of them. Its not the faith so much as it is the environment you are raised up learning it in. As stated earlier, you get nut jobs from every religion, we just choose to focus on the muslim ones.

look at the muslim countries and you have your answer, you cant hide the fact that every muslim country is oppressive and have no regards for non-muslim life and they even kill themselves for being in different sects, how more animal can you get. im sure there are lots of muslims who dont prescribe to the same hate but they are also quiet about the evil and silently condone such acts.

1.5 billion muslims and you cant get a majority to denounce the minority who commit murder in the name of islam, that tells me that a majority are okay with it. this is not some small matter or even a large societal one, this is a huge global problem that muslims need to address or continue to be at war with us and face defeat.

not so. He is still here in Bell County and keeps getting found in contempt of court because he shows up with a full beard and won't shave. There were more pretrial hearings yesterday. You may need to take more care regarding where you get information from. Oh, and one of the motions from the defense yesterday was a request for a change in venue for their client. No go. Trial will be here on Fort Hood.

I've heard that too, but I wonder if it would happen. I think the judge is trying very hard not to make any errors that could result in grounds for appeal. KCEN has been pretty good about presenting updates whenever something is going on. Saw the news vans at the main gate as I left work yesterday.

I did read on the KDH website yesterday that KPD has been going around to businesses and warning them to start watching for suicide bombers how freekin scary is that?

                          from the KDH article:

In anticipation of Maj. Nidal Hasan's upcoming court-martial, Killeen police have begun canvassing restaurants, telling staff to keep their eyes open for possible suicide bombers.

The ongoing effort has sent several officers to area restaurants to hand out fliers providing tips to spot terrorists.

The flier encourages restaurant staff to establish security procedures and a "threat alert system," it states.

"We're just going around and covering all bases," said Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith. "We're not trying to scare anybody. Things like this happen, and people need to be prepared for anything to happen."

Its instructions include telling staff to know all delivery vehicles and staff who routinely come to the restaurant, installing security cameras and to make note of any suspicious people, statements or actions.

This is not justice, but obviously an injustice. If we ever incarcerated people for wanting to right a wrong, I'm sure we wouldn't have militias, tea partiers and their 2nd right amendment. Don't the tea partiers, not only show up protesting against the black illegal from Kenya with guns galore and many of them do actually act on their fantasies and only those who've done it are called crazy and put in jail for life, but why this guy has to pay the same price? I'm sure that being Muslim had a lot to do with it, but isn't justice, real justice supposed to be blind? Yes, but Muslims are not part of the deal, so my question is: Why not? Inquiring minds want to know!

These sgt shcultzes can't understand the meaning of true justice. They are always driven by agendas and not facts, not true justice. Since when thinking is worse than doing it. You can ignore the 800 Lbs in the room, but what can you tell me why this "Christian and democratic" nation doesn't go after real war criminals, starting with that retard pervert from Texas. Justice, pea brains, is supposed to be blind, but I can see by your comments that you are not only blind, but deaf and dumb. You want true justice? Look how Norway treated the neoNazi. He killed 17 innocent people, mostly children and they sent him to jail for 25 years. I know that if after treatment he doesn't show any improvements, he can be held for more years, but I would put my marbles on their justice system than inmours any time, any day. The main goal of justice, a la Christ, is that the criminal repent and join society again. If Saudi Arabia can do that with known terrorists with our acquiesence, why not us that supposedly are not only Christian, but also democratic, while everybody in the world knows that the Saudi regime is one of the most repressives. You can have your stupid and ignorant, bigoted opinion, but you can't have your own facts. I don't even know why addressed mental midgets. I have a better chance of hitting the lotto than for these pea brains get the true meaning of justice. As for that Karl j. Fungus, boy if you are stupid. You say the things you say because you are a bigot and that name sounds German and not just a German now, but from the Hitler's era. All racist, all violent, all brutus and stupid to the nth degree. And as usual, again, dumb f*uck, I'm catholic, not Muslim, but I don't sell my morals to bigotry or afraid of nazis, ergo, you is the coward. If killing a million plus of innocent civilians is your idea of bravery, maybe you are in the wrong era. Hitler is already gone. Now being ignorant, blind, deaf and dumb is the trait of all you people and let me quote Mr. T: I pity the super coward and fool that obivously has no idea as to what justice means. What scum bag you are.

So I am a Nazi because I have a German name? The pope is German, is he a Nazi (if you know his history don't answer that)??? Btw, I am also Catholic.

True justice? Hmmm, interesting. Check the background of that nice misunderstood man in Norway. He wasn't a neoNazi, he was actually a christian religious zealot who claimed to be a Templar. He actually killed 77 innocent un-armed people and injured 319. He is just as sick as this Islamic former soldier. In fact he might be best described as a monster.

"If killing a million plus of innocent civilians is your idea of bravery" how did my post advocate killing innocent civilians??? I am actually anti-war too, unless it is justified (Afghanistan was, Iraq wasn't).

As for the Saudis? Wow, lets hold them up them up as an example of the way to treat anyone. They treat women as breeding stock and are about as backwards as any people on earth.

You sir, are the idiot (I use that term in its technical sense as defined "An idiot, dolt, or dullard is a mentally deficient person, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way")

Btw, hit spell check and grammar check before you post and for Christ sake at least quote Mr. T accurately. He was an American hero.

He gets civilized due process and life, which is much more than he or any Muslim will going to give their victims. What does it cost to keep these Koranimals incarcerated, $50K-$100K a year? Don'tcha love it?

I'm getting to the point where I think an insanity plea is just plain BS and should not be allowed if the person was capable of fairly in depth planning, plus carrying it out. I mean, of course a person would have to be insane to do any of these things! So, that they are insane goes without saying. It is not like he just snapped and started shooting people, he and many others made very detailed plans and carried them out. The guy that shot the woman senator is one example, the batman killer is another. They don't deserve an insanity plea, their attorneys need to suck it up and quit playing their dam games.

Neither Abdo nor Hussan have/will be claiming an insanity defense. Abdo was found guilty and sentenced (today) to life. The trial for Hussan is coming up, but a sanity board ruled that he was not insane (a legal issue) at the time of the shooting, so no insanity defense. His mental state may -- and I stress, MAY -- come up as a "mitigaing" factor, particularly when it comes to sentencing.

Insanity ... or any other "excuse" is of absolutely no issue. DID THEY DO THE CRIME OR NOT? THE END !! Execution or incineration er, I mean incarceration. . period

So what's the status of the Islamic terrorist that killed and wounded dozens ON Ft. Hood almost 3 years ago? That seems to be very quiet! Why is that?? Any guesses?

I was actually just wondering about that shooting myself. I think the guys name was Hassan! I'm not surprised that we haven't heard much about it though!

Hasan's trial starts 20 August they've had to keep delaying it, and lots of pretrial and contempt hearings

If the majority of American Citizens thought the 'Washington Establishment' was corrupt and oppressive, and should be removed, they should find out if their military was with them, or the Washington politicians.

I always thought their oath was to the Republic of the United States of America, NOT to the politicians in Washington?

In my heart I believe the United States has become the largest poultry farm on the face of this Earth!
