In this file photo, U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. speaks at a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington on Dec. 10, 2008. The congressman is currently on medical leave.
Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is "regaining his strength," following his admittance to the Mayo Clinic for bipolar disorder earlier this summer, the Rochester, Minn., facility said Monday.
The Illinois Democrat, who has been on medical leave from his job since June 10, is being treated for Bipolar II depression, the clinic said. Jackson has been at the Mayo Clinic since July 25.
"Congressman Jackson is responding well to the treatment," Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Traci Klein said in a statement. Jackson asked the clinic to distribute this information on his behalf, and Monday's update comes after mounting pressure to reveal the nature of his medical leave.
The Mayo Clinic says Bipolar II disorder is a treatable condition, affecting parts of the brain that control drive, thought and emotion. This type of depression is most likely caused by a set of genetic and environmental factors.
Jackson's wife said earlier this summer that the congressman was "completely debilitated" by depression.
Klein said the 47-year-old congressman underwent gastric bypass surgery back in 2004, which changes how the body absorbs things like foods, liquids and medications.
There's no timeline for Jackson's recovery, according to Jackson's father, civil rights activist Rev. Jesse Jackson. The elder Jackson said earlier this month that his son has no plans to step down from his post.
Jackson is currently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for his connections to former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted on corruption charges for trying to sell off Barack Obama's Senate seat after Obama was elected president. Jackson has repeatedly denied wrongdoing in the scandal and has not been charged.
Former Rhode Island Rep. Patrick Kennedy said Monday he plans to visit Jackson on Thursday at the Mayo Clinic, The Associated Press reported. Kennedy was treated at the Mayo Clinic himself for addiction and depression in 2006 after a late-night car crash at the U.S. Capitol. He decided not to run for a ninth term in 2010 and retired from Congress last year.

Could this have anything to do with being brought up by his bat-chit crazy Nazi father?
Can you please explain to everyone how his father is a Nazi? I get it if you don't like or agree with him, I myself don't either. But when you start making silly claims like that you make yourself look like a troll. Surely you have something more intelligent to add to the conversation, don't you?
Lookin' like Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., didn't inherit his dad's Chicago Teflon Coating....Things are starting to stick to him....He's gonna go full blown Tri-Polar when Rudy Giuliani replaces Eric WithHolder as Attorney General in January.....
bi polar depression can be a life long disorder. No member of congress who has a serious mental disorder,(PERHAPS MOST OF THEM DO HAVE ONE) should be serving in congress. This is a serious disorder, with many relapses and many many side effects. To say in a few short weeks that he is responding to medication is ridiculous. The medication only has a temporary effect, doesn't cure it and what causes this mental illness has to be removed. I.E. the stress of being in politics. Jesse Jackson should immediately resign, take a very long sabbatical and then look for a non stressful job to live out his life.
It is certainly heartening, as I read these discussion threads each day, to be reminded of the endless compassion, and kindness, and basic goodness of the American people.
NOT!
Our society seems to have lost its moral compass. How unfortunate that so many seem among us believe that civility and understanding of their fellow human beings are just quaint concepts, which have no application in their own lives. God forbid any of you ever find yourselves in need. What irony that would be, hmm?
ofcourse1...(#1.3)..."Jesse Jackson should immediately resign, take a very long sabbatical and then look for a non stressful job to live out his life."
Years ago Jackson Sr. threatened Budweiser with a boycott till they relented and gave the Jackson Family the Largest Budweiser Distibutorship in Chicago....Jr. can go on the payroll there....problem solved....
"Back in 1995, the reverend made his son a congressman, financing the 30-year-old’s campaign by collecting money from Rainbow PUSH donors and spending it on expensive mailers and phone banks. Most of his Junior’s money came from out of state. Bill Cosby and Johnnie Cochran wrote checks.
Jonathan Jackson is the national spokesman for Rainbow PUSH, Yousef Jackson owns a Budweiser distributorship his father helped him obtain. Both of these sons work in the family business, too.

Mike in Delray, you reinforce my point. Your off-topic comment speaks to your harsh partisanship and has nothing to do with an article about a serious mental illness challenge for a fellow human being.
So much for civility, compassion and basic human kindness. So where did you lose your own moral compass; and are you spending any time looking for it, or are you spending all of your time just doubling-down on incivility? Such a dark, dark place to dwell.
Another half ass story by MSNBC. I have no doubts that the entire facility of the Mayo Clinic was not polled and agreed that Jesse Jackson Jr. is recovering from bipolar mental disorder. Perhaps a spokesperson said it, but I sincerely doubt that any doctor violated patient doctor privilege and said anything about the condition, or how the patient is.
Robert in Oregon...I thought the 1%-ers were evil and should be despised ....or is that only if they are NOT Progressive/Democrats ????
Mike in Delray
Wow, that was interesting. You just completely changed the subject yet again to pursue a completely different line of partisan thought and snarky sarcasm. It would seem that 'focus' may be an issue, hmm? I think I'm seeing the possible problem, here. ADHD perhaps? Gosh, I'm sorry. I didn't know!
Yes, a very, very dark place to dwell indeed.
So this is great...mental disorders for politicians....all at the tax payers expense...
get back in there and cast votes loser... quit riding on the free health care for me card ...
I know three by-polar people and oh let me tell you, they have problems, big time. It just eat's away at there habits, vocabulary, moods, it's scarey at times to be around them. There not in my family at least. I can come and go and they don't interfer with my personal life. But they definatly need God help, there's no doubt. And as some have said on here, there's no doubt his family, homelife, history, background can't help one bit in trying to re-focus his head or personalty. No way, it's got to just rile him up even more with all he has on his plate. so sad. I'm not a Jesse Jackson fan at all and when this was first found out a couple months ago, there were some really terrible things said about this kid and the family just keep dodging all the bullets and now we find out this. He needs to leave the family, join a cult and disappear. His roll in congress is over, there's already enough crazy money hungery SOB's in that place, and that can't do anything but ruin a person in time. And med don't help. The three i know get scarey on some of the meds they take. So sad!!
And Jesse Jr.'s resignation letter will be submitted ..........
Jesse Jackson Jr....Jesse Jackson Sr....can ANYONE let me know what these two have done besides breathed?
They have not educated the black population, informed them of their rights and obligations, have enslaved them to vote lock step in favor of any democratic politician.
Remember that Jesse Jackson senior said the following at a public news conference:
""There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps and start thinking about robbery then look around and see somebody white and feel relieved."
The unfortunate part is that mental health issues don't get the sympathy that other health issues do. Because it is him and because he is his father's son, there are those that are going to attack him and say cruel things about him that they would NEVER say if he had cancer or any other disease.
Right you are, Cappy. If you took out "bipolar disorder" and substituted "muscular sclerosis" or "diabetes" this whole thread would be different. As a matter of fact, it would hardly be news.
I pray for quick recovery for Jesse Jackson Jr. and his family
I pray for a quick conviction and a lengthy prison sentence.
Yeah, you go ahead and "pray" for him, feastering hog. Good luck with that.
Does anyone know a politician from Illinois who was not corrupt? Obama did nothing when he was in the Illinois state senate and sure as hell did nothing when he was senator. Tell me what Obama from Illinois has done as president. I am still waiting to see what Obama's school records look like.
I've been wondering about those records myself!! My college transcripts have followed me to every job i've ever held. I needed them to get into the United States Air Force 40 years ago. And four years ago elect a president of the United States and we know nothing about him, and his first term is almost up, and it's been a complete failer and the Democrat party of the United States of America wants him to be President again. Is it just me our is there something terribly wrong with that?
ROTFLMAO,
First it was substance abuse, then depression, now we are going with bi-polar disorder.
Not have had a chance to diagnose any potential evidence but seeing some of the evid3ence posted against him I would say he suffers from incarceration phobia.
Responding well to treatment???
what a load of BS.
Funny how someone magically becomes Bipolar when they think they are going to jail
Pure hokum for the masses.
He doesn't want to join Blago in the 'Big House'.
Bi-polar? He found himself agreeing with Republicans? Yikes, get me to a hospital, my father will kill me!
disqusted-469890: Name 3 other people who've "magically" become bipolar when they think they're going to jail. Bipolar II is very treatable with the correct medications. To call BS on the statement that he's responding well to treatment is... well, BS.
No just two with "seizures" instead of DUI Hit and Run and One with Alzheimers when she can't remember how she knows she is a Native American but knows she is.
I cant. no one ever thought to use this excuse before but im sure it will become quite popular
can you claim bipolar as a defense in court?
disqusted-469890 ...(#8.3)..."can you claim bipolar as a defense in court?"
When you couple it with your High-Priced Defence Team that puts "Expert Psychiatrists" on the witness stand to also say he's "multiple-personality" disordered too....and it was the OTHER Jesse Jr., that was trying to buy P.Obama's Senate seat from Blago....
It is certainly heartening, as I read these discussion threads each day, to be reminded of the endless compassion, and kindness, and basic goodness of the American people.
NOT!!! :-(
Our society seems to have lost its moral compass. How unfortunate that so many among us seem to believe that civility, and understanding toward their fellow human beings are just quaint concepts, which have no application in their own lives.
God forbid any of you ever find yourselves sick, or hungry or otherwise in need. What irony that would be, hmm?
Well the thing is if any one of us ever finds ourselves sick, hungry or in need of help we probably won't get the right help that is needed being we are just common folk living paycheck to paycheck!! And yes bipolar is a serious mental health issue, but I find it a coincedience that he just became sick when he's being investigated!! It just goes to show that money can get you out of any problems you might be having and don't want to face!!!
Robert - You really think that Jesse requires compassion and understanding?
You better try coming out of that rock you live under. Oops, nearly forgot that if you're black, let alone Jesse Jackson's son, you can do no wrong.
I am wondering if he can get off with "bipolar defense" myself. Because being bipolar does not mean that you do not know right from wrong. You do. For example, "I know that taking this big pile of money is theft," is generally how a bipolar person would think.
But a good defense attorney may well have him say, "Well, I'm bipolar, yes, and even though I knew it was wrong, I was manic and euphoric that day, so I was cycling too high and I couldn't help that I took it."
I'm serious about this, I'm also bipolar so I have some idea of how people with that disorder think.
I think the entire Democrat party is suffering from this "Bipolar" disorder, perhaps they could make room for several hundred more?
I believe your more right than you know or their willing to admit. It does seem to be a syndrum of black and white now becoming white and black, and you never know when there going to change it back. And with bi-polar everybody else is always wrong and they are always right. That sounds more like the Democrat party now that you mention it even more.
Proves that liberalism is truly a "mental disorder". Do they make "bi-polar prison soap"?
What's the old saying....."if you can't out smart'em , out dumb'em" He's gonna hold on to that pay check and never go to work! hahahahahaha!!!
Gotta remember, he had to go to work and put up with Pelosi as his leader and mentor everyday. That and considering who his dad is it is a miracle he can do anything other than drool on himself. Six months of treatment and he could work on Obummer's staff-oh that's right Obummer will be gone by then.
So the methadone is working.
A couple of more weeks and he will be good as new.
Why does he still have his Il Firearms Owner ID card? In IL, if you have been under treatment in the last 5 years, you are supposed to surrender it
He will really be in a depression once he gets the treatment bill. Oh wait Paul Ryan wants to cut everyone else's benefits except the kings of the Senate and the House who get to keep platinum governement sponsored health care coverage.
Mr. Paul Ryan how about doing a nice thing and dumping your government health plan for you and your family. How about shopping on the free market buster?
The deluded always need correction. The program you are seeking to reference is Obamacare. It was your Democratic overlords who exempted themselves from it.
Polly want a cracker?
I suppose crack addiction and the fear of incarceration for being a corrupt dirtbag can manifest itself into bi-polar like symptons.
Nah.....he's just looking for a defense angle for when they prosecute him.
@Conservative Rebellion --- Jesse Jr. already has a defense angle ready for federal prosecutors. He'll blow the dust off the Kennedy family defense..."I was on Ambien and do not remember a thing".
Bipolar... yeah right. He's probably suffering from the stress caused by wanting to do what's right for America but also wanting to vote for the progressive destroy America liberal agenda.
A Bipolar in Congress what is this world coming to. Get rid of him he is worthless and useless with or without Bipolar.
Pretty convenient time for this, all the bullsh*t in his private life coming forward and he disappears. The apple did not fall far from that tree, the old man should have been in jail for shaking down corporations for years but he was able to do it in typical Chicago style. I know he is busy preaching in church all the time because he is a Rev. like weasel Al Sharpton. Both of them are less than prostitutes because they will do anything for a buck whereas a good prostitute still has some things she will not do. No pity here.
Well isn't this special news. It's amazing how ones health will improve as they dry out. Hope Jesse Jr. and Blago have much more in common other than being low life criminals. They'll make such a beautiful couple.
How depressing, to be unable to buy Obama's Senate seat
I wonder if Blago will give him the lower bunk in their cell......'cause Jesse's goin' down y'all
Can you imagine what the bias NBCCBSABCCNNMSNBC networks would have on the news if his last name was Bush or Palin........
Double standards abound in the liberal commy factions.
If he changed his criminal ways he wouldn't be so depressed.
Bypolar depression my ass. The apple didn't fall far from the tree- his problem is genetic.....
