Pregnant woman, 7 others hurt after SUV careens into Dunkin' Donuts

This image taken from video shows an SUV after it plowed into a Dunkin' Donuts store in Jersey City on Monday.

Officials say eight people were injured, three critically, when an SUV crashed into a Dunkin' Donuts store in Jersey City Monday evening.

Authorities say the driver of the white SUV, a 14-year-old girl and a pregnant woman were among those injured in the accident. It wasn't clear what caused the SUV to careen into the shop at 318 Central Ave. at about 8:30 p.m.

Six people were taken to the hospital and two were treated at the scene. Some of the injuries were serious. It wasn't immediately clear who was driving.

Fire Director Armando Roman says the teenage girl was in the shop with her mother and sister when the accident occurred. She suffered head trauma and two broken legs.

Rabson says the girl has undergone surgery. Four others are in stable condition after being treated for trauma.

A police spokesman says the SUV driver was injured but that the severity of the injuries isn't known. The pregnant's woman condition is also unknown.

Bystanders described a chaotic scene, with people being carried by on stretchers and gawkers crowding the avenue near the store.

Jason Wilkins, of Jersey City, said he'd never witnessed such a scene.

"My prayers go out to anyone that got hurt," Wilkins said. "It was a pretty gruesome scene."

The incident is under investigation. The store is expected to reopen once a Department of Health inspection is complete, an employee said.

WTF? They need to make sure there's no metal or glass fragments on the donuts? I'm surprised no cops were injured.

"What the hell is a 14 year old pregnant woman doing driving an SUV? I thought they usually drove Cavaliers and Sunfires."

'Sirlafalot', I have to make the admission that I always read your posts with the expectation of a chuckle; and you seldom disappoint ( And yes, ...I feel VERY guilty about that! ;-)

Your take-away from the facts listed in this article for some reason reminded me of the wonderful routine by the late Victor Borge, which he called "Phonetic Punctuation." Sometimes I think all of us could improve our reading comprehension if we had someone like Victor standing at our side providing the punctuation sound-effects while we read.

Ahhh - what a wonderful god to spare these lives. Ohh wait, didn't he cause the crash in the first place?? Couldn't he have prevented it like he prevented the bullet from killing that pope some time ago? Gotta love god: he could cure world hunger and cancer but he's rather just watch me masturbate.

Bruno - most people that believe in God do not equate him with comic book Superman. Our lives are going to be filled with heartache and difficulty, that is guaranteed. But He will give us the strength to endure.

Condolences to the survivors and their families.

It's funny how people think that GOD should be out there doing everything for us. He could cure world hunger? According to the bible we lived in paradise without world hunger and death and our ancestors turned their back on that. I mean ever heard the saying, to know good you have to know evil? People like t bruno wants GOD to spoil us rotten. Do everything for us. Perhaps he would prefer GOD to control us like a puppet. Whether or not you believe in GOD is one thing. But if you took the time to think for just one second you could see why those that believe in GOD know why he allows some of the things that he does. I can tell you this, after seeing and experiencing all this evil, I sure will appreciate heaven when I get their. I probably couldn't say the same thing if GOD had made earth paradise. I'd probably be an appreciative jerk like Lucifer.

SpsTorres, you are extremely delusional. You are talking about God and Lucifer and heaven as if they really exist. Do yourself a favor, do some research and think for yourself for a change. There is no more proof of God's existence than there is for Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy.

And if you believe in what you read in the Bible, which I'm sure you do, you'll believe that everything we do is already per-ordained, so, yeah, your God IS pulling the strings on your life.

@Joe Joe, it doesn't matter what I believe, that is no business of yours. So people who don't believe in GOD go around and belittle those of us that do? How stupid. I think for myself and I have an open mind. But you didn't know open mind and believing in GOD could go together, huh? Also, the bible doesn't say that we have a fate that we can't change. What kind of Sci-fi BS. are you on? PS. it's funny that when people try to dissprove GOD they say, why would he let this stuff happen, and then when you try and explain it, they say, THINK FOR YOURSELF. lol

I need a gun and I'm not a cop. My guns have killed nothing except rats...you like rats??? What you mean is you don't need a gun...I guess there's a reason for that. Since you don't need a gun, why don't you put up a sign on your front door "Gun Free Home"....but don't hold me responsible for the consequences. "Everyone needs transportation"...walk or drive a small sensible car instead of a cruise missle. Nobody needs an SUV.

I wouldn't say nobody. But you are indeed correct. Most people have no need of one.

There are easier ways to kill rats by the way. I'd say your way is very labor intensive.

D-Con poisons a rat to a slow death. Not a "nice way to go". Rodent traps that glue an animal down and they are thrown in the trash to starve to death. Not a "nice way to go". Shot with a gun. Pretty quick way to go.

        @Shandril,

I have a small Silouet sign (6"X8") on the front lawn next to the walkway with three back dots in the chest and three in the head with the caption "This home protected by Smith and Wesson".

You don't want to own a gun, that is fine by me, but don't try and take mine from me and expect to wake up the next day.

I go to the range often, and I never had an event that required me to even think about picking up my firearm at my home except to go off to the range, or clean them when I got back. You want to live in a fantisy land where you call 911 and expect the cops to be there in 3.7 seconds...

This cop should not have shot the dad, from what I can gather from the facts in the article, he was un armed. That is a Zimmerman....

Wow! I mean, wow...I'm befuddled here. Praying not for my harm, but for that of my family. You are certainly off your rocker, have definite anger issues and likely need therapy outside of the church.

You're praying...I'd take that as you are religeous...some variant of Christianity proabably...so I can make this ascertation without reservation, you are not a very good Christian, certainly not closely following Christ's teachings.

You should probably be saying something like, "Goodness, Chris, your mind is twisted and you have gone astray. I pray that you see the errors of your ways and God can guide your towards a more compassionate path. More importantly, I pray that the injured feel the Lord's love in this time of desparate need. Chris, may you find your way back into His flock."

Regardless of who or what they were or might have been doing; there have certainly been a lot of commercial building "incursions" lately.

Our friendly community Building Inspectors, engineers and various other government CODE officers and such have "missed the boat" when it comes to protecting people and property by simply requiring a minimum 6" steel pipe barrier in front of commercial establishments, with pipes filled with and buried in concrete to depth of at lest four feet; spaced approximately four feet apart. Usually our friendly (pain in the ass) code officer makes his regular trips to commercial establishments and will cite owners for frivolous infractions while 4,000 pound vehicles drive through nothing more than a massive, metal framed, plate glass window with coffee customers seated at ground zero awaiting to meet their maker.............

A very, very common means of dealing with horrific events is humor. I certainly wouldn't be the only person on the face of the earth, and I'm likely one of the least famous.

If your anger is best vented through forums, perhaps there are some much more popular people that you can asail while speaking to a much larger audience.

It's apparent then, since you understand humor, that you just don't get it. I don't need nor want your pity kljjtl. It's really sad that you can work yourself up in this fashion over a one-liner. Have you ever seen the movie History of the World: Part I? Mel Brooks does a whole song about the Inquisition, where 1000's of people were killed in the name of religeon. You'd better get started beating down his door, my 1-line joke wasn't even about 1 death. He had a whole song and reached millions of people with it.

Basically, I'm not the worst of it. I even wished well the people who were injured. You seriously need to get a grip or you will pop.

Both the headline and the very first sentence of the article state that "an SUV" did this; I don't think SUVs (or any other cars/trucks) can do these kinds of things all by themselves. Funny how they try to blame the vehicle, not the driver.....

the driver was probably 80 years old and confused the accelerator with the brake pedal.

I thoroughly enjoy a good debate, discussion by intelligent people. many of the posts are not even close to being intelligent. @!$%# happens. so what. it's not about God. He didn't do anything. It's about stupidity from people. article says the driver was 14. maybe the sentence structure is wrong. why is a 14 yr old driving at all?? (if indeed she was 14).... that's why it happened.... not because God let it!

The driver was not 14, you read it wrong.

They specifically list 3 of the 8 injured.

Authorities say the driver of the white SUV, a 14-year-old girl and a pregnant woman were among those injured in the accident.

Jano: I read it the way you did also. It does say 14 but may be a grammatical error. I suspect the person writing the article was 14 and can't yet understand sentence structure.

Bingo! With the way much of the news is written today, you have to read and re-read many stories to try and make sense of what the "writer" is trying to say.

I had to re-read that same passage, and while it could be taken that the 14 year old was the driver, I don't believe that is what happened. A description of the driver is suspiciously absent.

There's nothing wrong with the sentence structure. The driver AND a 14 year old girl AND a pregnant woman (three separate people) were among the injured.

Sometimes humor in death is a defense mechanism. When my grandfather died a few months ago, we were sad, but we tried to laugh at all the funny things he did when he was alive. It made us smile... like the time my mom called him and said, "Hey dad, I just arrived in Albuquerque" and he replied, "You're eating all the turkey?"

Good ol' grandpop, he couldn't hear, he could barely see, and that didn't stop him from driving. (Taking his keys away, however, did.)

Matt, you have provided a perfect example of the genuine humor to be expected, thanks. Always found when someone has a vested personal interest in the one suffering or dying by trying to come to terms with psychological deep pain. With comments often reflecting personal information about the person's life interacting with loved ones. Keeping things positive, kind and thoughtful. Empathy is a wonderful gift that can help draw people together as they try to understand and support those suffering from such sad events. It is a shame it seems to be in such short supply lately. Then again my own great grandmother used to say, don't worry about people who haven't learned what they should. Life is the perfect teacher. What they haven't learned from others mistakes, they get to learn on their own!

Yeah, and then I will laugh at all of them, and make lots of fat jokes! Yeah! See how you like it! Not only do I hope it happens, I will pray for it to happen! Yeah, because God will listen to me and make your family crave donuts on an hourly basis! They'll be shovelling them in by the dozen! They'll even eat the donut holes! You'll see, and you'll be sorry!

If these people had been shot rather than hit with a vehicle it would be headline news.

Vehicles kill 3 times as many people as guns. Even during the Iraq war, the Marines lost more soldiers to traffic accidents in the US than to enemy action in Iraq.

That's why "right" is in quotations. Of course it's not a right. It should be illegal everywhere, and there should be jammers in vehicles to prevent incoming or outgoing signals to cellphones if the car is not in Park or Neutral.

Sorry, we really need that sarc font. For what it is worth, I have never texted in my life and don't feel I ever need to. About two or so years ago that train driver texting his girlfriend wrecked and killed because he was not paying attention. It's not worth it people.
