Cops: Man steals pot from police because 'it smelled so good'

A man in Pennsylvania who was arrested Saturday for allegedly stealing a bag of marijuana from a police station says he did so because he couldn’t resist the drug’s aroma.

Police arrested David Allan Thompson, 27, for stealing a bag of pot that had been seized as evidence from the Charleroi Regional police department, according to the Observer-Reporter.

He reportedly stopped at the police station at about 8 p.m. Saturday to offer information to Officer David Kimball about an unspecified case, according to a police affidavit filed with District Judge Jay Weller.

Kimball noted in the police report that at one point during their conversation, Thompson followed Kimball into a patrol room where the weed was sitting on a counter. Kimball then escorted Thompson back to the original room. After Thompson left the station, Kimball went back into the patrol room and noticed the bag of pot was gone.

Kimball searched the desk and asked other officers about the evidence but found no trace of the weed. Another officer tracked Thompson down outside the police station, asking him, “What did you do with the weed?”

Thompson held out his left hand and placed the bag in the officer’s hand, according to the affidavit. Police arrested Thompson and said they also found a suspected marijuana pipe in his pocket.

Police said that back at the station, Thompson apologized repeatedly, telling police, “I just couldn’t help myself. That bud smelled so good.” He also reportedly told police he couldn’t believe he was in trouble for “taking a little bit of weed,” especially since he had stopped by to give them information.

The police affidavit didn’t specify what help Thompson intended to provide police.

Thompson was arraigned before Weller on charges of theft, receiving stolen property, tampering with or fabricating evidence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is scheduled to appear in district court on August 23. Online court records list no attorney for him.

It's amazing how the media will give these types of articles "front page" when there is a negative down side to marijuana but when there is a positive article that comes out in favor of marijuana it seems to get buried or never covered by the mainstream media.

For example, there is a recent article that refutes the U.S. governments' claim that pot doesn't have any medicinal value. I don't see that article anywhere in the mainstream U.S. media.

One day, this BS will end and the propaganda will cease. One day.

Leatherneck:

And the Idiots want to Legalize Pot, Its Not harmful. It might not kill you, but it sure makes you dumberthana boxof rocks.

The only idiots are the ones that support the perpetuation of a spectacularly failed and costly drug war and prohibition that have ruined more lives and killed more people than all of the drugs combined.

And BTW: Your generalization couldn't be more inaccurate. I wonder how you could apply your statement to someone like, say, Carl Sagan? Yeah, he was dumb...NOT!

You also said:

By the way you might want to study up on why there are zero death reported by Marijuana. Its because they are all reported UNDER accidents. Why there is not a box to check by the corners offices to label death by Marijuana use. So they just put them under accidents.

Do you have a link or source to back up this statement? I'm pretty positive if the officials in charge could point to pot as the direct result of a death they would be all over it to use in their propaganda machine. It would be a 'front page' article.

While it's funny to make jokes about an idiot...why are the police leaving a schedule 2 narcotic just sitting out in the open at a police station?

Pot is a Schedule I drug, in spite of zero potential for overdose, and the fact it's not physically addictive.

Meanwhile, barbituates, which have high lethal overdose potential and are extremely addicting are on Schedule II. Why? Because when the schedules were made up, barbituates were being sold by Big Pharma, and were making them a lot of money.

To my knowledge, no one perscribes barbituates anymore, because they are so dangerous...and yet they're still on Schedule II. Go figure.

I thought barbiturates were prescribed to US fighter pilots as sleep aids.

They are also given amphetamine pills to wake up and ensure alertness on long missions.

This was all over the news years ago when one of our Guard pilots dropped a bomb on some Canadian solders in Afghanistan.

I was working in Alaska many years ago and a dude gave me some home grown hydro. I thought what the heck and tried it. Man o man that stuff was good. Three tokes for a 5 hour buzz. Same thing happened in Maui when a local gave me a doobie when I was in the Hard Rock Cafe. It was so called Maui Wowie but not nearly as good as the Alaska weed. The Northern California area has good smoke. I have tried that. But my smoking years are way behind me now. I wish I could but my job prevents any of that. I remember in the 1970's the cops in my little town would just take the weed away from you when caught and let you go. I guess they wanted some too.

That is back when the law enforcement went after the dangerous people in our society instead of doing the dirty work for our federal government who's bottom line is to control our everday life in the this country. Ah the good old days, working 10-12 daily then gathering family & co workers for a barbaque, beer & joint for the non-drinkers. Then some fancy lawyers came along & blame marijauna for criminal actions instead of making the criminal take personal responsiblity.

The world would be a lot better off if everyone just passed the good stuff around and enjoyed life. Exchanging some of this fine herb for goods and services would be ideal. Of course, anything that doesn't bode well for the corporate machine must remain out of reach or illegal, regardless whether or not it is actually harmful. Free-thinkers and/or regular pot smokers do not make ideal slaves.

the REAL crime in this story is that possession of marijuana is STILL illegal after all the years and data showing it's just not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

                Legalize marijuana

                Tax it

Even if you give them useful information that will help them solve a real case, they will not hesitate to pile a bunch of bull@!$%# charges on you for taking a small bag of mj from them.

theft, receiving stolen property, tampering with or fabricating evidence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

You seriously can't make this ish' up... I never knew a pot head that didn't make it in life by becoming highly successful, or simply stayed on the couch and laughed at Sponge Bob all day hurting no one.

All I have to say is legalize, decriminalize, whatever... already. There's no solid evidence anyone can produce to argue against it especially when we have had plenty of our very own presidents in our history not only support it, but use it themselves.

You are what you are, with or without herbal help, a dumbass pothead is still a dumbass without being stoned...

His only mistake was not getting far, far away quickly....leaving evidence out on a countertop is an argument that the evidence could have been tampered with, I remind you of a particular recent steroids trial, case dismissed...

Having been a consumer of both weed and alcohol, it was the alcohol that was damn near my demise. I mean that sh!t kicked my a$$ up one side and down the other. Weed on the other hand just came and went in my life.

Actually, it wasn't alcohol that damn near done me in, it was myself. Alcohol is what I chose to hide from myself. For some reason, with pot, I could take it or leave it. I know we're all wired different, but based on my experience, I've seen much more harm come from alcohol to the people I know than weed ever caused.

I've not touched a drop in almost 10 years. Lol...I wouldn't take a day back though because my past helped make me what I am today. And today, I'm pretty damn happy. So I say toke up if ya got em'. That is, unless it's tearing you down like alcohol did me. Peace. :o)

This is because alcohol is physically addicting, and marijuana is not.

You can become psychologically dependent on MJ, just as you can to sex, video games, or religious activities, but you can't get physically addicted. In order to be physically addictive, a physical withdrawal symptom must exist. With alcohol, it's physical symptoms of anxiety in more mild cases of addiction, the delerium tremens in more advanced cases. Even caffeine has a physical withdrawal syndrome - the headache you probably get if you don't get the morning cup to which you are accustomed.

No researcher has ever been able to isolate a physical withdrawal syndrome for marijuana, because it's not addictive. That's why you were able to take it or leave it.

Know why you never see any responsible, mature marijuana users around?

Because they stay out of sight.

For every Jeff Spicoli clone like the "duuude" in this article, there's several people who come home after a hard day on the job, quietly light one up, relax, and enjoy the effects of a fine herb. They don't smoke in the car. They don't spark up a doob out back of the movie theater. They aren't on welfare. They aren't hanging out at the local medical dispensary looking for someone with a prescription to score them a bag. They don't wear pot-leaf t-shirts or sport "420" bumper stickers. They certainly don't take a pipe with them when they go to the local police station to discuss a matter, and they'd pass by that "free" baggie of pot the same way they'd pass if a gun or a bag of cash had been left on the table.

In short, they go about their business just like every other American, they just choose to relax and enjoy a little less-harmful-than-alcohol herb in the privacy of their own home.

They don't get attention because they don't want attention. Attention means police, arrests, fines, jail, and confiscation of car/home/business in some places. So they choose to remain silent, and only speak out in forums like this one, where a reasonable degree of anonymity exists, and at the voting booth, in places where the option to vote on legalization is available.

I'd refer to them as a "Silent Majority", but then I'd have to take a bath for stealing a line from Nixon.

Of course if they worked at a job that required random drug testing they could not casually toke at will.

Every company I've ever worked for that said they wanted a "drug free" workplace never actually drug tested new employees, due to the expense involved.

Basically, it was a reason to deny health care in the event a worker made a claim. For example, I had a fall at work one day when someone backed their desk chair into me as I walked behind them. I landed on my shoulder on a concrete floor and required some minor treatment. When I went in for treatment, I was given a drug test, which I passed. Had I not passed, the corporation would have been able to fire me and not pay for my medical treatment.

In short, their anti-drug policy wasn't about hiring better people, or out of concern for worker well-being, it was simply a way of letting them cut their costs.

I know more than one independent businessman who has chosen to avoid any type of corporate control, at least partially due to the fact they don't want to have to answer to anyone regarding what they put into their own body.
