Cops: Man steals pot from police because 'it smelled so good'

A man in Pennsylvania who was arrested Saturday for allegedly stealing a bag of marijuana from a police station says he did so because he couldn’t resist the drug’s aroma.

Police arrested David Allan Thompson, 27, for stealing a bag of pot that had been seized as evidence from the Charleroi Regional police department, according to the Observer-Reporter.

He reportedly stopped at the police station at about 8 p.m. Saturday to offer information to Officer David Kimball about an unspecified case, according to a police affidavit filed with District Judge Jay Weller.

Kimball noted in the police report that at one point during their conversation, Thompson followed Kimball into a patrol room where the weed was sitting on a counter. Kimball then escorted Thompson back to the original room. After Thompson left the station, Kimball went back into the patrol room and noticed the bag of pot was gone.

Kimball searched the desk and asked other officers about the evidence but found no trace of the weed. Another officer tracked Thompson down outside the police station, asking him, “What did you do with the weed?”

Thompson held out his left hand and placed the bag in the officer’s hand, according to the affidavit. Police arrested Thompson and said they also found a suspected marijuana pipe in his pocket.

Police said that back at the station, Thompson apologized repeatedly, telling police, “I just couldn’t help myself. That bud smelled so good.” He also reportedly told police he couldn’t believe he was in trouble for “taking a little bit of weed,” especially since he had stopped by to give them information.

The police affidavit didn’t specify what help Thompson intended to provide police.

Thompson was arraigned before Weller on charges of theft, receiving stolen property, tampering with or fabricating evidence, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He is scheduled to appear in district court on August 23. Online court records list no attorney for him.

I like the part about receiving stolen goods. Since the cops stole it in the first place, its only appropriate that the drug was considered "stolen". Let the guy go! I'm sure they are only making a big deal about it because the cops had intended to sell it for themselves!

I knew a guy whose community service was to clean the police station. He was able to get a bong from there.

It's certainly a sign of a bureaucratic state when doing one thing gets you 4 different criminal charges. Marijuana is a drug much like alcohol and it shouldn't be abused, but it does have medicinal value and should absolutely not be illegal. If you hate marijuana and think it's pure evil, then just curse God for making it, why don't you?

Once I stole a bag of pot from a drug dealer. He came to my house and busted my door down. Threw me around a little until I finally admitted it and told him where it was. So, don't tell me about how bad your father is ... mine is worse!

I don't smoke at all. How many cops smoke the stuff. First of all don't forget the fact evidence was expose to all it was not secured. And if it was evidenc how in thw world can any ploice office allow it not to be properly locked up. The officer/s including the bosses should be hit with some descipline...don't u think. Looks like this station performance is in inferior in nature to allow any type of evidence exposed. Of course when ask about it they will lie about there mistakes and forget about it. So sad so sad.

Hmmm.. man goes in police station to deliver info on a current case, police officer shows him unattended room where there is weed on a table. I guess the stoolie was looking for a free doughnut, but decided on making brownies instead. Should have just been a slap on the wrist. And a stern "Swiper, NO SWIPING" repeated three times.

The "War-on-Drugs" has consumed so much attention from our Justice System that the serious pursuit of criminals with actual victims, like rapists, has been largely abandoned. Do a Google search for "UNTESTED RAPE KITS" and see what I mean.

I wish we could get our nations OLD PEOPLE to vote for legalization.

It would've been great if the cop's first name was John.

Sure, the pot sitting on the desk was evidence...sure! But, regardless it was kinda of low down to steal the bud. C'mon man...stealing any-body's weed is mean spirited. It goes against the concept of smoking weed in the first place. Stealing it just attaches a negative Buddha point to it and you get a bad high with negative Buddha points Dude.

Sorry, I disagree. If I could steal back weed from the cops and catch a buzz with it that would be major positive Buddha points.

It will never be legal being that our civilization stands so rigidly as it does to always oppose personal sovereignty.

But it's on the way out - ever so quickly now.

In FACT "they" will just grip harder and harder and harder making all the more angry slaves out of us while the global economy spirals down the toilet.

                          They can't help it.

                          And neither can we.

Try and enjoy the ride, and maybe we'll be free on the other side.

I hope you are wrong on the "never be legal" part. Hopefully it will still happen while I an still alive and kicking on this rock.

I would like to add that the drug war will never end because of $$$. Follow the money and then you will get your answer. But, hopefully, I am wrong, too.

We act as if pot is dangerous or something. If it weren't for the losses that the prison system, paper industry, and alcohol industries would endure, pot would be legal already.

It would be a great way to solve the deficit. Legalize it, tax it, budget surplus.

So lets get this straight (no pun intended), the police are going to waste their time and our money prosecuting this (probably harmless) pothead when there are tens of thousands of violent criminals running around. What a country we live in.
