Security guard shot at conservative group's DC office

The gunman was subdued after shooting a security guard in the arm in the offices of the conservative lobbying group. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Updated at 6:45 p.m. ET: A gunman who shot a security guard Wednesday at the Family Research Council office in Washington, D.C., was carrying a handgun and several additional rounds of ammunition, federal investigators told NBC News.

Washington, D.C., police say the man walked into the headquarters of the conservative Christian lobbying group around 10:45 a.m. When challenged by the security guard, the gunman shot the guard in the arm with a Sig Sauer 9 mm handgun he pulled from a backpack.

The wounded guard, identified as Leo Johnson, wrestled the gun away from the shooter and prevented him from hurting anyone else, police said.

The suspect was then detained by other guards, and both district police and the FBI responded. He was taken into custody by FBI agents. The FBI will have jurisdiction if the incident turns out to be a hate crime.

The suspect’s name has not been released, but two law enforcement officials told NBC News he is Floyd Corkins, 28, from nearby Herndon, Va.

Federal officials said the suspect the backpack also contained materials about Chick-fil-A restaurants.

Another official said the suspect bought the gun used in the shooting five days ago.

The FBI said the security guard is being treated in the hospital and "doing OK."

“The security officer here is a hero, as far as I’m concerned,” Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier told NBCWashington.com. “He did his job. The person never made it past farther than the front door.”

An armed man walked into the Washington headquarters of the Family Research Council and shot a security guard, according to authorities. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Jacqueline Maguire, FBI Washington Field Office spokeswoman, also called the guard "a hero."

"And he did an excellent job of stopping the gunman from getting any further into the building and from anyone else getting injured or shot by him," she said.

One law enforcement official told NBC News it's fairly clear the Family Research Council was the man's target, though the FBI has yet to specify either a motive or the target of the attack.

The Associated Press reported that Corkins had been volunteering at a community center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Another official told the AP the shooter made a negative reference about the work of the Family Research Council before opening fire.

Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council sent an e-mail to members last month in support of comments by the restaurant chain's president, Dan Cathy, who criticized same-sex marriage.

The comments touched off a public clash. Supporters on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" on Aug. 1 flooded the chain's franchises around the country and  was countered with "kiss-ins" by same-sex couples at assorted locations Aug. 3.

On its website, the Family Research Council founded in 1983, says it advocates "faith, family and freedom in public policy and public opinion" and other issues. It lobbies against gay rights, abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

In a statement, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said, "The police are investigating this incident. Our first concern is with our colleague who was shot today. Our concern is for him and his family."

Thirty-four gay rights groups issued a joint statement condemning the shooting:

"We were saddened to hear news of the shooting this morning at the offices of the Family Research Council. Our hearts go out to the shooting victim, his family, and his co-workers. The motivation and circumstances behind today's tragedy are still unknown, but regardless of what emerges as the reason for this shooting, we utterly reject and condemn such violence. We wish for a swift and complete recovery for the victim of this terrible incident."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the president, who was traveling in Iowa Wednesday, was informed of the shooting shortly after 1 p.m.

"The president expressed his concern for the individual injured in the shooting and his strong belief that this type of violence has no place in our society," Carney said.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said in a statement that he was appalled. "There is no place for such violence in our society," he said. "My prayers go out to the wounded security guard and his family, as well as all the people at the Family Research Council whose sense of security has been shattered by today's horrific events."

Obama has not condemned the shooting @ FRC because SPLC which is an extreme leftist group hates FRC. SPLC is a radical race baiting organization that labeled FRC as a hate group. Obama needs their unscruptulous hands to get out the vote.

The Southern Poverty Law Center responds to Tony Perkins and the FRC hate group:

http://www.splcenter.org/blog/2012/08/16/splc-family-research-council-license-to-kill-claim-%E2%80%98outrageous%E2%80%99/

Yesterday’s attack on the Family Research Council and the shooting of a security guard there was a tragedy. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) deplores all violence, and our thoughts are with the wounded victim, Leo Johnson, his family and others who lived through the attack.

For more than 40 years, the SPLC has battled against political extremism and political violence. We have argued consistently that violence is no answer to problems in a democratic society, and we have strongly criticized all those who endorse such violence, whether on the political left or the political right.

But this afternoon, FRC President Tony Perkins attacked the SPLC, saying it had encouraged and enabled the attack by labeling the FRC a “hate group.” The attacker, Floyd Corkins, “was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center,” Perkins said. “I believe the Southern Poverty Law Center should be held accountable for their reckless use of terminology.”

Perkins’ accusation is outrageous. The SPLC has listed the FRC as a hate group since 2010 because it has knowingly spread false and denigrating propaganda about LGBT people — not, as some claim, because it opposes same-sex marriage. The FRC and its allies on the religious right are saying, in effect, that offering legitimate and fact-based criticism in a democratic society is tantamount to suggesting that the objects of criticism should be the targets of criminal violence.

As the SPLC made clear at the time and in hundreds of subsequent statements and press interviews, we criticize the FRC for claiming, in Perkins’ words, that pedophilia is “a homosexual problem” — an utter falsehood, as every relevant scientific authority has stated. An FRC official has said he wanted to “export homosexuals from the United States.” The same official advocated the criminalizing of homosexuality.

Perkins and his allies, seeing an opportunity to score points, are using the attack on their offices to pose a false equivalency between the SPLC’s criticisms of the FRC and the FRC’s criticisms of LGBT people. The FRC routinely pushes out demonizing claims that gay people are child molesters and worse — claims that are provably false. It should stop the demonization and affirm the dignity of all people.

Here's a good article which discusses why the FRC is indeed a hate group:

I can't stand the Family Research Council, but that doesn't mean I have the slightest bit of sympathy for this gun-toting scumbag. He should be put away for a long time.

This doesn't change my feelings about gun control -- if they were harder to get, this tragedy might have been prevented. If this sort of thing becomes more common, I wonder if any conservatives might change their tune?

There were already laws in place to prevent this guy from getting his hands on guns (mentally ill people are not allowed to have guns, and this guy was a known homosexual).

But like all criminals, they simply don't obey the law, so the only thing that more restrictive gun laws does, is provide more unarmed victims.

Mrs. Warden is right, and the American Psychiatric Association recognized it- that's why the APA listed homosexuality as a mental disorder.

        GetEQUAL Statement on FRC Shooting
        http://getequal.org/blog/2012/08/17/getequal-statement-on-frc-shooting/

Wednesday's shooting at the Family Research Council's (FRC) headquarters is a stark reminder of the fragility of life. GetEQUAL condemns the shooting and wishes the officer a speedy recovery.

In the aftermath of Wednesday's events, it would benefit us all to consider the impact of the continued discrimination that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans face on a daily basis. For decades, LGBT Americans have endured ridicule, stigmatization, demonization, physical abuse — often at the hands of our own families, classmates, co-workers and neighbors — and blame for countless natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina…all in the name of "family values."

At a Thursday afternoon press conference, and despite no evidence to substantiate his claim, FRC president Tony Perkins laid the blame for Wednesday's shooting at the feet of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), stating that by labeling the FRC a "hate group," the SPLC had contributed to this horrible and violent tragedy. To be clear, the SPLC has worked for decades to track incidents of violence and intolerance in an effort to prevent just such an attack, laboring tirelessly to provide reliable information on hundreds of groups across the country that demonize groups of people simply for who they are — whether that's based on race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation and gender identity.

We stand side-by-side with the Southern Poverty Law Center — a group born out of the civil rights movement over four decades ago — and support their work to track incidents of hatred and intolerance directed toward the LGBT community and other marginalized communities across the country. Despite Mr. Perkins' attempts to paint himself and the FRC as victims, it is groups like the Family Research Council that regularly and routinely use deceptive practices and intolerant rhetoric to create a dangerous environment for LGBT Americans. It is for this very reason that the SPLC has, accurately, labeled the FRC as a hate group.

While Tony Perkins places the blame for Wednesday's shooting at the feet of the SPLC, we must ask: Where was Tony Perkins when two members of our community were left for dead in the bushes of Violet Andrews Park in Portland, Texas? Where is Tony Perkins' condemnation of the thousands of LGBT youth being bullied, beat up and laughed at in the halls of our schools? Where was Tony Perkins when North Carolina pastor Charles Worley declared that all gays and lesbians should be rounded up and put in camps surrounded by electric fences, and left to die?

We all know the answer — Tony Perkins is and has been silent. Mr. Perkins has time and again advocated against the humane treatment of LGBT Americans and against any legislation that would protect LGBT people from discrimination or attack. Decades of paid work focused on marginalizing and demonizing LGBT Americans has resulted in tacit endorsement of violent acts and the spread of false information about LGBT Americans. Through his ongoing campaign of discrimination and insistence on pursuing a radical right-wing agenda, Mr. Perkins has advocated for the reinstatement of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," an amendment to the Constitution that would forever outlaw marriage equality, and state laws that would continue to keep LGBT Americans as second-class citizens.

As GetEQUAL is committed to fighting against injustice and for equality by using non-violent civil disobedience, we condemn Wednesday's shooting even as we also ask the Family Research Council (and organizations that share its views) to think about the environment they have created by marginalizing a minority group and making family members, neighbors, and friends into scapegoats for society's challenges. GetEQUAL never condones or advocates for violence, and believes wholeheartedly that when violence is used we all lose. There is no power in violence; our power comes by coming together as a community, standing shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters and refusing to be moved under the weight of discrimination, prejudice, and intolerance. Even as we hope for the recovery of the security guard who suffered violence on Wednesday, we also hope for an end to the Family Research Council's tactics of division and fear-mongering that have created such a toxic environment within our homes, neighborhoods, schools, places of worship, and workplaces.

Telling the truth about a group's hateful message is not the same as advocating violence. We pray, with all people of good will, for an end to violence as a means of expression.

The seething hate speech of deranged leftists will continue to result in violence.

Impeaching Barack Hussein and deporting him back to his own country would be a great start, if we want to turn our country around and get it back on course.

I am no fan of FRC but this is a hate crime not different that if a conservative man shot up a gay or lesbian advocacy headquarters. Yet, in our society one is considered a hate crime the other not.

Can anyone explain to me how such a lying slank bigot like Oklahoma mom has manged to live so long without someone doing the world a favor and making her disappear? I know why, because she's nothing but a coward who hides, most likely in the local KKKs office, where she lists her residience as registered abuser.

Yeah Romney says that but the people who vote for him and Ryan see justice in shooting up Planned Parent Hood Clinics, killing "abortion" doctors and shooting unarmed black teenagers and sending our soldier to war at the drop of a hat. Romney and the GOP is posturing and itching to start a war with Iran (of course since Netanyahu is their supreme leader) and thought nothing about the letting Afghanistan go on forever. More lip service from the party of "shock and awe".

                Bored of it all

Charles-1820634 - Give me just one incident that voting has ever killed an individual, let alone MASS murder.

How about kennedy was against american involvement in vietnam. Johnson was his running mate and there were numerous complaints about johnson in texas with dead people voting and ballot box stuffing. So if that had not happened and johnson had not gotten to the top of the pile in texas, then maybe johnson would have carried on with kennedys plan for no american involvement.

As it was kennedy was assassintated, johnson took over and shortly thereafter lyndon baines his johnson and sent american troops to vietnam. 58,384 dead, dont know how many wounded and three million vietnamese killed. The purpose, keep the south a democracy, well the whole country is socialist. How about that with illegal voting?
