Cops: Teens beat man because 'they were just bored'

Jennifer Edwards Baker / The Enquirer

Pat Mahaney, 45, was treated for internal wounds at a local hospital for four days before his release Tuesday. Police said doctors had to insert a tube down his throat to remove all of the blood from his stomach.

A man in Ohio was severely beaten by six teenage boys who said they did so because they were bored, police allege.

Pat Mahaney was walking home from the store in North College, Ohio, Saturday with a six-pack of beer, looking forward to a quiet evening watching sports, when something hit him in the back of the head.

“They came from behind. They hit me,” Mahaney told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I don’t remember telling them anything.”

Police said the six boys, ages 13 and 14, “were just bored and looking for something to do” when they ambushed Mahaney from behind. He was immediately knocked unconscious. During the attack, one of the boys hurled a beer can at Mahaney’s head, police said.

“The next thing I knew I woke up on my neighbor’s front step and the life squad was there,” Mahaney, 45, said.

An officer responding to another call spotted a crowd of people gathered near Mahaney’s home. Several witnesses told the officer Mahaney was covered in blood after being “jumped by six children,” the police report said.

Mahaney was taken to Mercy Mount Airy Hospital, where he was treated for four days before being released Tuesday. Police said doctors had to insert a tube down his throat to remove all of the blood from his stomach.

A tube remained in his right nostril as blood continued to seep out of his head, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported, and his left eye is heavily blackened.

Police said the teens admitted that Mahaney had done nothing to provoke being kicked and punched repeatedly in the face while he lay helpless on the ground. One of the boys allegedly told police they only stopped assaulting Mahaney when a neighbor began yelling at them and said he was calling police.

“They were pretty arrogant in the interview with us,” North College Hill Police Chief Gary Foust said of the teens. “This appears to be premeditated, and there was no remorse on behalf of any of the assailants.”

The boys were arrested and taken to Hamilton County’s juvenile detention center, where they were released a short time later. They face felony charges of aggravated riot and felonious assault and are on house arrest at their parents’ houses, court officials said.

“I didn’t think kids could do something like this," Mahaney said. "They should be punished.”

Mahaney said he has no health insurance and has been unemployed for years. He said he has been looking for factory work.

The boys are scheduled to appear in court Aug. 24.

These are the kind of crimes where public caning should be the punishment. Televised.

I'll bet the parents are good for nothing as well. These little thugs should be horse whipped. Shame on there parents and family for raising garbage. Throw them in a cell with some hardened criminal and lets see what they will do then. Put the parents in jail also. Worthless human beings.

You don't understand, only whites do hate crimes. You have to have a victim mentality.

I've been bored from time to time as a youth but never would have thought of doing others harm because I'm bored. Back when I was their age (I'm almost 50 years old), if a group of kids did this, they would be punished much more severely than they are now. The parents wouldn't be backing them up. They most likely would be ashamed on their behavior. Back then going to a juvenille facility was a scary thing just as going to prison would be, scary something to avoid. You didn't get out the next day or a couple of hours later. Today, kids don't really care. There also no real deterrents to these acts of crime whether you are an adult or a juvenille.

Politicians threaten to get tough with indiviudals who commit crimes by passing strict laws, but unless you enforce these laws, they aren't worth much. That's the problem when it comes to violent crime in general. Someone who smokes marijuana often gets a harsher sentence than someone who beats the crap out of someone. Punishment often doesn't fit the crime.

Violence has been around since the beginning of time. It's easy to blame violent movies (which were around when I was younger), celebs and sports stars behaving badly (this was also around but it wasn't reported or it was covered up) but it goes a lot deeper than that. Acts of violence that weren't tolerated years ago or would have resulted in a very long prison sentences or a prison sentence doesn't usually happen, even in murder cases.

The difference between when I was a kid and now is that you were held accountable for you're actions which I know deterred many acts of violence. The parents cared about how they were perceived as the reputation of the family was very important to most people which also was a deterrant to crime. Nowadays, it seems like a bad reputation is more important.

These kids who beat up this man were troubled long before this happened. You don't wake up one day and decide you are going to do this. Events happen which led up to this. It's very rare for someone who has never been in trouble or who isn't know to cause problems to commit this type of crime.

It's a good thing for him that he didn't fight back and successfully defend himself. Then he'd be the dirty, rotten, no-good white boy who beat up a group of po' helpless black kids.

I'm older than you and I agree with you. To be candid, if I screwed up in school or got in trouble with the police, I was more fearful of what my father would do than anything the school or police would.

I'm not saying my dad didn't back me up, he did without question. But he made sure I knew THEIR punishment would be nothing compared to what I would get from him. Makes one toe the line and play by the rules.

Prison will change them of that.

I never will understand why the victims name and photo are shown yet the people who commit the crime, especially if they are "underage", are protected and not shown?

          Reply#302 - Thu Aug 16, 2012 8:40 AM EDT

They likely will never see prison. They'll be released on probation to their "parents", who will give 'em an "attaboy" and nothing more will be done.

How nice of MSNBC to omit that fact that all the suspects were black. There is no doubt if the situation were reversed, Al Sharpton and company would been headed down for protests. However, when the victim is white, no worries just "youth" , randon act of voilence, race was not a factor. BS!

I do realize this as do others , it is the political culture we live today. This past year across the country there have been over 60 documented cases on "black on white" attacks. Philly, Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Peoria, Denver, Virginia Beach, Richmond Va Cincy, on and on. These go largely unreported by the liberal media, if it is covered as this story is, race in not mentioned. There is an undeclared war on white people- most folks are just unaware or unconcerned because it has not directly affected them...yet

The Department of Justice should be investigating this as a hate crime! Why does it always seem to only become a big deal media circus when its "white on black" violent crime that then gets turned into a "hate crime" but when its "black on white" violent crime there is no mention of it being a hate crime it gets marginalized into something like, as in this case, just some "bored kids" with nothing else better to do than beat up on someone! I wonder did these kids beat up on anyone else? Did they beat up on any black victims? I'll bet the answer is no to beating up on any black victims. Rev. Al & Jessie - any comments?

No one questioned these things regarding the Colorado shooter or the neo-Nazi shooter in Wisconsin. Why? However it really doesn't matter, because at the end of the day, a crime against society is just that, a crime. Questioning someones upbringing or color is just a self motivator for those who hold certain stereotypical views.
