Cops: Teens beat man because 'they were just bored'

Jennifer Edwards Baker / The Enquirer

Pat Mahaney, 45, was treated for internal wounds at a local hospital for four days before his release Tuesday. Police said doctors had to insert a tube down his throat to remove all of the blood from his stomach.

A man in Ohio was severely beaten by six teenage boys who said they did so because they were bored, police allege.

Pat Mahaney was walking home from the store in North College, Ohio, Saturday with a six-pack of beer, looking forward to a quiet evening watching sports, when something hit him in the back of the head.

“They came from behind. They hit me,” Mahaney told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I don’t remember telling them anything.”

Police said the six boys, ages 13 and 14, “were just bored and looking for something to do” when they ambushed Mahaney from behind. He was immediately knocked unconscious. During the attack, one of the boys hurled a beer can at Mahaney’s head, police said.

“The next thing I knew I woke up on my neighbor’s front step and the life squad was there,” Mahaney, 45, said.

An officer responding to another call spotted a crowd of people gathered near Mahaney’s home. Several witnesses told the officer Mahaney was covered in blood after being “jumped by six children,” the police report said.

Mahaney was taken to Mercy Mount Airy Hospital, where he was treated for four days before being released Tuesday. Police said doctors had to insert a tube down his throat to remove all of the blood from his stomach.

A tube remained in his right nostril as blood continued to seep out of his head, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported, and his left eye is heavily blackened.

Police said the teens admitted that Mahaney had done nothing to provoke being kicked and punched repeatedly in the face while he lay helpless on the ground. One of the boys allegedly told police they only stopped assaulting Mahaney when a neighbor began yelling at them and said he was calling police.

“They were pretty arrogant in the interview with us,” North College Hill Police Chief Gary Foust said of the teens. “This appears to be premeditated, and there was no remorse on behalf of any of the assailants.”

The boys were arrested and taken to Hamilton County’s juvenile detention center, where they were released a short time later. They face felony charges of aggravated riot and felonious assault and are on house arrest at their parents’ houses, court officials said.

“I didn’t think kids could do something like this," Mahaney said. "They should be punished.”

Mahaney said he has no health insurance and has been unemployed for years. He said he has been looking for factory work.

The boys are scheduled to appear in court Aug. 24.

This is not about MSMBC. Nor is it about Obama, or any of these other things. MSMBC has nothing to do with what these kids are charged with. They have no law enforcement power. No one called any news organization and asked for an opinion. That is just crazy blather! The same story can be found reported in the same way from several different sources. Get real, folks! Neither does it have anything in the world to do with who is the president.

If you are going to have objections and opinions, you best make some valid arguments, not ugly and nonsensical brain droppings. These accusatory comments have absolutely NO validity what so ever! There is no coherency and it is purely fanatic nonsense, bumper sticker politics. It is hard to argue with stupidity! Stupid and ignorant comments and ideas are so insubstantial that they are hard to get a hold on.

Fair enough - ok some facts from DOJ Blacks are 7 times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, 8 times more likely to commit robbery. Interracial Crime- of the nearly 770,00 violent crimes committed each year involving black and whites - black commit 85 percent whites 15%. Blacks are estimated 39 times more likely to commit a crime against a white than vice versa- 136 times more likely to commit a robbery Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites and than vice versa. Rapes - white women are raped at a rate of nearly 100 to 1 by black men vs White men raping black women. In 2005 37,460 White women were raped by black men vs nearly 0 of white men raping black women. Now, do you think that is reason enough for whites to be leery of African Americans?

Celtic, I will not address the issue of your statistics. Such number crunching is fraught with miscalculations and easily manipulated. One thing that does seem to be universally true is that amongst the lower social and economic class of people there is more criminal activity at street level. I am not going to argue statistics with you.

However, that is not the issue here. The issue is not whether white folks should find black folks suspect. The issue that I was addressing in the issue of hate crime. I was questioning how hate crime is determined and why it is treated differently.

In regard to your list of statistics---WHO is "black" and WHO is "white". Our society is increasingly a mixed bag of ethnic origins. That is another slippery slope when we try to put citizens into these ethnic (racial) catagories. Most African Americans in this country are anything BUT all African in origin. Many blond headed folks have African ancestry. And, then, try to define those who are classified as Latino, and you have a real mess. All of this bean counting that we try to do just leads to more nonsense. You just can't build logic and sense on a foundation of nonsense. But, that is a different topic.

This is what happens when kids are provided with all their basic necessities without doing anything to earn them, and raised listening to music and other media that glorifies violence. Spoiled, they take their next meal for granted. They need to be put somewhere where that isn't the case.

Humans transgressing upon others in society is nothing new. My concern with charging someone with a hate crime is that I think it is a slippery slope to try to determine what is, ultimately, the motive for attacking another. People's motives for doing what they do are often very convoluted. Who is to determine just what was in the mind of another? It seems that, with a hate crime, the perpetrator has to make known their hate by actually stating it as they commit the crime, or in connection with their actions. I may be mistaken, but, I do think that this is written in as part of the definition of the law.

A crime is a crime, no matter what the motive. It doesn't matter if the motive was hate, anger, a desire to rob, or just being bored. The only times a motive would matter would be in a case where one believed that they were acting in self defense, or if the perpetrator were not mentally responsible for themselves and unable to discern the difference in their actions, or complete and utter desperation. In some instances the motive should be investigated and considered.

But, who is capable of defining the brand of hate that someone else might harbor? Just what, exactly, is hate? And, why would hate be a separate crime distinguished from all others? And, why is hate defined as just racial hatred, or hatred of homosexuals, or of other creeds or religions? There are many instances of hate that most of us harbor at some times in our lives. I have known individuals that I dislike to an intense degree. But, I am not going to commit a crime against them. All acts of transgression such as this one are a crime against our fellow citizens, and should be treated as so.

Maybe these boys did not see it as beating up a white guy. Maybe they just saw someone who looked vulnerable. Who knows? Is it still a hate crime if they attacked him because he was there and he was seen as an easy mark? Who determines this? We should hold them accountable for what they did, not why they did it. This situation does not seem to have any of the mitigating factors such as self defense, etc.

I take great exception to the idea of a hate crime, for these reasons. And, I really do think that there exists a double standard. That makes me angry at the law. You knuckle draggers that want to blame our current president have no valid arguments for that. This nonsense precedes him.

This was not a "black on white crime"....if so, I'm sure the Police would be reporting on it. It's a crime involving six teenage boys with nothing more to do, getting bored and beating up on a man minding his business.

Do they deserve to be punished? Yes, to the fullest. Not sure what part the parents played in this or if they are to blame, but this should not be tolerated.

Stop making this a 'black / white' issue and let's start raising up these kids to be good decent human beinigs.

I find it difficult to,believe that if the races had been reversed, that anyone would expect that race not be considered.

Juanin, just what EXACTLY what would you have a Republican president do? What to do with these illegitimate children and their welfare mothers? And, don't forget the baby daddies. WHAT to do? Talk is all cheap and cowardly. What type of action would you have a president take to correct the situation?

Would you suggest eliminating them? Should we spay and neuter them, regulate their birth control? Should we round them all up and put them into colonies? Of course, the Repub party wants to eliminate birth control and abortion. My guess is that this sentiment is more toward the white folks. I'll bet that few of you would uphold the right to life for another little offspring of a welfare baby momma. I will bet that many christians would not consider this life to be a "gift from god", deserving of all human rights.

Horrors to live in such a country as that! In some parts of the world the government has the power to do those kinds of things. They are seen as being crimes against humanity. The governments are seen as cruel dictatorships. We send our troops to these countries to save the helpless citizens from these types of governments. Would you have us like that in America? Would you have firing squads like some countries do?

The situations that we find ourselves in at this time did not happen overnight. The Repubs have had the presidency for a couple of decades. All of this went on and grew to these proportions over decades of Rep oversight. Bush almost drove us off a cliff of economic disaster. Many of these economic problems can be laid squarely at his feet. There is a reason that the current repubs cannot even trot him out as an endorsement. He and his legacy are an embarrassment to the party and a mess for the rest of the world to live with.

You folks are extremely deluded to think that we were living in the enchanted garden until Obama became president just a few short years ago. And, you are even more deluded to think that you can return to that garden with a repub president.

So, just WHAT would you have a Repub president do? Would you have children starving in the streets, with all means of support just cut off? Would you have the streets full of beggars? WHAT? Of course, that is one reason that so many on the right arm themselves with weapons. They are afraid of all the needy people who might be gathering at their door. This way they can shoot them and call it self defense. Problem solved, right?

You are full of bumper sticker slogans and mantras, but very short of real solutions. Until you and your ilk are putting forth ideas that are worthy of consideration, ideas that truly uphold freedom and democracy, you are the other half of the problem. You are another ugly and troublesome legacy of the Bush era that the world has to contend with.

                    Excellent piece.

Juanin lacks the intellect, as do most Republicans, to understand the dynamics involved in this situation. People tend to shoot from the hip without regard for consequences. Maybe things will settle down after the election.

                    Just kidding.

well, eliminating them and all the other riff-raff is a start...law abiding victims of crime deserve better, and one day they will get it....
