Cops: Teens beat man because 'they were just bored'

Jennifer Edwards Baker / The Enquirer

Pat Mahaney, 45, was treated for internal wounds at a local hospital for four days before his release Tuesday. Police said doctors had to insert a tube down his throat to remove all of the blood from his stomach.

A man in Ohio was severely beaten by six teenage boys who said they did so because they were bored, police allege.

Pat Mahaney was walking home from the store in North College, Ohio, Saturday with a six-pack of beer, looking forward to a quiet evening watching sports, when something hit him in the back of the head.

“They came from behind. They hit me,” Mahaney told the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I don’t remember telling them anything.”

Police said the six boys, ages 13 and 14, “were just bored and looking for something to do” when they ambushed Mahaney from behind. He was immediately knocked unconscious. During the attack, one of the boys hurled a beer can at Mahaney’s head, police said.

“The next thing I knew I woke up on my neighbor’s front step and the life squad was there,” Mahaney, 45, said.

An officer responding to another call spotted a crowd of people gathered near Mahaney’s home. Several witnesses told the officer Mahaney was covered in blood after being “jumped by six children,” the police report said.

Mahaney was taken to Mercy Mount Airy Hospital, where he was treated for four days before being released Tuesday. Police said doctors had to insert a tube down his throat to remove all of the blood from his stomach.

A tube remained in his right nostril as blood continued to seep out of his head, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported, and his left eye is heavily blackened.

Police said the teens admitted that Mahaney had done nothing to provoke being kicked and punched repeatedly in the face while he lay helpless on the ground. One of the boys allegedly told police they only stopped assaulting Mahaney when a neighbor began yelling at them and said he was calling police.

“They were pretty arrogant in the interview with us,” North College Hill Police Chief Gary Foust said of the teens. “This appears to be premeditated, and there was no remorse on behalf of any of the assailants.”

The boys were arrested and taken to Hamilton County’s juvenile detention center, where they were released a short time later. They face felony charges of aggravated riot and felonious assault and are on house arrest at their parents’ houses, court officials said.

“I didn’t think kids could do something like this," Mahaney said. "They should be punished.”

Mahaney said he has no health insurance and has been unemployed for years. He said he has been looking for factory work.

The boys are scheduled to appear in court Aug. 24.

Here's the hypocrisy of the left in this country. The man was white and the teens were black but no, it wasn't a "hate crime" they were just "bored"!!! Are you freaking kidding me? And no mention from MSDNC, not even a hint at racism in this article. If the shoe was on the other foot, there would be marches planned, Obama would be involved and the "Justice Department" would be on it's way. Unbelievable!

I don't think this is a right or left issue, this is a common ground issue. If anyone was ever eligible for a hate crime, it is these kids.

On house arrest...are you effing kidding me? Sort of like expelling a kid from school and letting him sit at home with his X-Box. Way to show them the consequences of their actions. They darn well better charge these little monsters as adults!!

At least ten years in prison for all of them, and make the parents pay for the victim's injuries plus a few thousand to teach them a lesson. I don't want to hear, "Oh, they are nice kids." No they are not. They are monsters and should be locked up. No phony sorry statements.

"The boys were arrested and taken to Hamilton County's juvenile detention center, where they were released a short time later." Well, that was certainly nice of the judge, to let them out to enjoy freedom! No doubt the judge did that because these are actually good boys who need to go to church services and help feed the homeless in a soup kitchen, while their victim spent 4 days in the hospital getting blood pumped out of his stomach!!

If my sons did something like that, I would insist on them remaining in custody until their trial. Once their sentence was complete they would come home to no video games, no cell phones, computer only for school work all strictly monitored. Their spare time would be spent at a soup kitchen, and doing yard work for the elderly. And I think I might even take them out with a trash bag to pick up trash on the side of the road wearing t-shirts that say "I'm not bored now!!"

These so called juveniles should have the same thing done to them, and after their major ass whipping do it again. This I do know if this were my family and I knew the ones who did it I would sure return the favor.

these monsters were released to the very parents who created them to begin with?

                      WOW!!!!

they should have been jailed and remained so until they are tried in a court of law. it makes no difference what their ethnicity is:( what difference does that make in any given situation. stop trying to make this something it is not. it's a crime and a man was hurt thru no fault of his own.

along with the parents being sued, the kids should all be held responsible for the man's medical bills and incidentals until it is paid off. no matter how many years that might take them, it should be a bill that follows them thru life. but then these little monsters probably won't have much of a life if they are starting this kind of behavior this young.

the world has always been scarey, but it seems it's worse than even i thought possible.

This site is such a race pandering leftist joke. What do you want to bet if the races were reversed this would have been the head story and the article would have strongly associated it with a hate crime. This site is more of a joke than fox news anymore.

And why were the kids released? They are under house arrest ... I'm sure their parents did an awesome job before, so I'm sure that they will continue to do an awesome job.

Thrown them in a prison so they can be some bad man's little b!tch!

These little punks should just be thrown in a deep hole and have slop served to them once a day. They should never even get a chance to mix with society again. There are enough good kids in the world to allow the bad ones to be disposed of. They won't be missed.

Pretty sad reflection on the parents of these children. Perhaps when "Bubba", their future prison cellmate becomes bored, they won't find it offensive if he beats the s**t out of them.

This guy in his 70's who walks his dogs every day told me he had 3 teens come up to him and one of them did a karate type kick and kicked him in the back. He said he slugged the teenager knocking him to the ground and the other 2 teens said to the teen on the ground, "That didn't work out the way you wanted" and then the teens took off never to be seen at the park again.

The parents should all be in jail AFTER they pay the bills and the fines and the pain and suffering.

The kids should be in prison long after they turn 18.

American parents are pretty useless if you ask me.
