WDIV's Sean Ley reports from Lapeer, Mich., where the only winning lottery ticket was purchased in the $320 million Powerball jackpot.
Updated at 7:12 a.m. ET: A single ticket sold at a gas station in Michigan matched all five numbers and the red Powerball to win the $337 million jackpot, the 3rd largest Powerball prize in U.S. history, lottery officials said Thursday.
Sales surged beyond expectations for the prize, which comes with an immediate cash option of $241 million, said lottery operator Multi-State Lottery Association, comprised of lotteries in 32 states and the District of Columbia.
The winning numbers drawn on Wednesday were 6, 27, 46, 51, 56 and the red Powerball, 21. The odds of having a winning ticket were one in 175 million, according to the lottery.
The $337 million ticket was sold in Lapeer, about 45 miles north of Detroit. There wasn't immediate word about the buyer's identity, the Michigan Lottery said early Thursday.
A person who answered the phone Thursday morning at the Sunoco station told The Associated Press that he was too busy to talk.
Eight tickets matched five of the winning numbers to win $1 million. Two of those tickets were sold in Indiana. The others were sold in Kansas, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
There was also a ticket sold in Nebraska that added the Power Play to win $2 million.
The jackpot has rolled 14 times since June 27. The last win was on June 23, when a Connecticut couple took home a $60 million prize.

"I can't even really think of what I wouldn't do," 7-Eleven customer Shelley Taylor told NBC station WBAL of Baltimore, about dreams of winning the jackpot.

"Absolutely nothing but travel; I would travel; quit my job and travel," customer Maresa Gold said.
The largest Powerball jackpot of $365 million was won in 2006 by eight workers from a meat-packing plant in Nebraska.
Tickets, which start at $2, are on sale until about one hour (times vary by state) before the 10:59 p.m. ET drawing. Five white numbered balls are drawn from a drum with 59 balls and one red Powerball from a drum with 35 numbered red balls.

Buy 231 million scratch off tickets so I would have something to keep me occupied during my "retirement".
If I won the Powerball, I would try to open an orphanage and try to rescue some of the foster children , open an animal rescue right next door and have the kids take care of those animals. Build a large compound for our disabled vets, nothing fancy but somewhere clean and safe and can get at least one hot meal per day, close to the VA hospital. The kids from the orphanage grow fresh fruits and vegetables for their home economics class, cook and proudly serve our Vets a meal. So many ideas, so little money. It only takes one ticket to win and that is all I can afford to buy.
Federal tax, state tax, market tax, right to gamble tax, recreational procedural tax...yes those are all taxes. There's a recreation tax, and a gambling tax. Look it up. Their both federal taxes, but they don't call it a Federal Tax.
Still 213 million. I'd probably just buy a nice house near a river or stream, and just enjoy the rest of my days. Hope to visit russia before that a-hole Putin puts the Iron Curtain back up. Really wanted to check out the food and drink, and check out the sites. Would be nice. Maybe Greece, definately Italy. But mostly Russia.
I'd get my "Check Engine" light fixed.
Must have bought your car from knock knock knock Penny... knock knock knock Penny... knock knock knock Penny.
If I hit I probelly would do just what I am doing now.The only thing that I would do is help a lot of people that I work with out .I am not talking about a million dollars a peace but may be 250 thousand because there are around 140 people working there. My kids would get about 10 millions each and each brother and my sister would get one million each and so would my wife's brothers and sisters.I my self and 61 and would like to keep on working until I retire.
For kicks and giggles, I would look directly into the camera on the day of the announcement, put a dead serious look on my face and say:
"I'm going to spend every cent of this money getting revenge on those who have wronged me at one time or another over the years!!"
I'd then disappear on a relaxing tropical vacation for next year leaving people to wonder if I was serious or not. If nothing else, I'd probably be left alone until people realize I was just pulling a fast one
I actually won something! Wow, about time!
I'd change my handle on newsvine to John Kerry...
I would rather take the money over thirty years
roughly 10.6 million a year before taxes and being as i live in a state that does NOT have an income tax ( yet) i would get roughly 6 .3 a year for 30 years after 39% federal income tax. I could live on that until i kicked off. and unlike some people i would not mind paying income taxes at all if i had that much coming in each year.
granted i already know that i will never win the grand prize and being unemployeed i have to find money to actually buy into this Multistate scam But it is a nice daydream. and that is all it is for most people A Day dream that helps us get through each day.
and being as i am single with no kids or family to give it to who cares if i die before i get all the money, give whatever is left to charity if there is any left after the death taxes get done.
I live in Birimingham ,Ala. You need a good LOL just read about this place. We to bible belt to have one. My money goes outside this hillbilly state. I wish I could play. Someone is going to have alot of friends!!!!!
Michingan huh? Maybe he or she will donate millions to Detroit and maybe try and clean the armpit up...hey, now that's an idea.
And first I would donate atleast 10 million to St. Judes Children's hospital and research, then I would finally be able to buy my land and open a no kill animal shelter, then I could donate to a good AMERICAN charity that helps AMERICANS! Yea, that sounds good.

That is the first thing I would do too.
So glad I did not put down ten bucks yesterday.
I submit that if you end up broke & destitute after winning that kind of money, you were stupid to begin with & didn't deserve that kind of money ! LOL
I also agree that the jackpots should be capped, with the extra going straight to the involved states education funds.
Oh well,,,,,,1 person won, but how many millions lost?
Can't wait to see them profiled on "Broke after winning the lottery."
A state lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math.
i'd just slide that wad over to my dad, because he is like one of the TOP brokers in the state.
i'd give it all to charity.....every cent.
I shoulda bought a ticket! Then I' could quit all my part time jobs and open a doggie day care for people who work multiple part time jobs or the lucky who have a full time job. Well not for them, for the doggies. LOL That would be my dream job, dog-sitting. No dog too big.
Use the money to become a vet. Do it anyway. We need good HONEST vets.
Scientist1-i think i'm wayyyy to old and impatient to go to vet school. It's a really long time. I have a had enough time when I had to have my dog put down. Folks don't need a blubbering baby vet. They need a rock :D
I won 200 dollars last night and only spent 9 to get it.Of course between filling my tank and groceries there's not much left of my windfall.Boo hoo
The lottery like gambling is a tax on the math challenged, stupid and poorly informed...and isn't it about time they paid their fair share
I didn't win it.
Did you ?
I would be happy to win anything I am a widow with 4 kids struggling to survive in this economy so winning any amount of money would be a blessing.
OMG I am soooooooo Jealous! But Good for them. I just wanna win enough to pay off all my bills!
Darn...that was supposed to be my ticket!
