Updated at 5:50 p.m. ET: WASHINGTON -- The president of the Family Research Council, whose employee was shot in the group's Washington, D.C., office, said on Thursday that a civil rights group bears some responsibility for the shooting. The rights group called the claim outrageous.
Floyd Lee Corkins II, age 28, of Herndon, Va., was charged in the Wednesday shooting.
"Floyd Corkins was responsible for firing the shot yesterday that wounded one of our colleagues and our friend," Tony Perkins said. "But Corkins was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center that have been reckless in labeling organizations hate groups because they disagree with them on public policy."
Perkins said the shooting victim, Leo Johnson, is not simply a security guard but is, in fact, the group's building manager, does not wear a uniform and does not carry a gun.
Told in the hospital Wednesday night that he was considered a hero, Johnson responded to Perkins, "This hero business is hard work."
The Southern Poverty Law Center has been strongly critical of the Family Research Council, and the two groups have been waging a public debate against each other for the past several years.
The SPLC's senior fellow Mark Potok called the comments by Perkins "outrageous":
"The SPLC has listed the FRC as a hate group since 2010 because it has knowingly spread false and denigrating propaganda about LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people -- not, as some claim, because it opposes same-sex marriage. The FRC and its allies on the religious right are saying, in effect, that offering legitimate and fact-based criticism in a democratic society is tantamount to suggesting that the objects of criticism should be the targets of criminal violence.
"We criticize the FRC for claiming, in Perkins' words, that pedophilia is "a homosexual problem" -- an utter falsehood, as every relevant scientific authority has stated. An FRC official has said he wanted to 'export homosexuals from the United States.' The same official advocated the criminalizing of homosexuality.
"Perkins and his allies, seeing an opportunity to score points, are using the attack on their offices to pose a false equivalency between the SPLC's criticisms of the FRC and the FRC's criticisms of LGBT people. The FRC routinely pushes out demonizing claims that gay people are child molesters and worse -- claims that are provably false. It should stop the demonization and affirm the dignity of all people."
Court documents accuse Corkins of walking into the council’s headquarters and telling a security guard words to the effect of "I don't like your politics." The documents said Corkins drew his gun and shot the guard in the arm before the guard subdued him. Another guard called police, they said.

Authorities said Corkins was carrying a handgun, two additional loaded ammunition clips, and a box of 50 more rounds.
Also in his backpack, they said, were 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches.
Investigators said his parents told the FBI that their son "has strong opinions with respect to those he believes do not treat homosexuals in a fair manner."

The Family Research Council strongly opposes same-sex marriage and abortion. Corkins had worked as a volunteer at a Washington center for homosexuals, bisexuals and transgender people.
Perkins sent an e-mail to members last month in support of comments by the restaurant chain's president, Dan Cathy, who criticized same-sex marriage.

Corkins is in FBI custody as part of a probe into whether the shooting could be considered a hate crime, the FBI has said.

This azzhole walks in and shoots a security guard who likely has nothing to do with the organization or it's politics, he is probably just a contract guard working his assignment. To shoot anyone over their expressing of their personal views is completely unacceptable, to shoot this guard is absurd. This guy deserves to get locked up for a very long time and he is obviously a threat to the population in general. Whether you agree with them or not, everyone is entitled to express their views in this country.

Erm... sorry to say, Conservatives, but if the entire Muslim community and the religion of Islam has to take responsibility for their extremists, Christians have to do the same. There's no magical double standard for you and your ilk. I don't care if you consider yourself the moral majority or not. Those of Sharia Law believe they're the same in their corner of the world. This is why I think religion as a form of morality is wrong: It refuses to age with the times, unlike our current laws and regulations, which are ever evolving.

Dunno what all the talk about no-media-attention is about. For a shooting that resulted in no fatalities and just one person winged in the shoulder, it actually is getting a lot of media attention. Hell, more attention than that Sikh Temple shooting - which was in the news cycle for all of what... 48 or 72 hours? And a bunch of people actually died there - but since none of them fit the profile for being made into a cause celebre for pushing a political message, that "incident" is already forgotten

It is now the "norm" to label someone as a "hater" simply for disagreeing. The aim is two-fold;
First, when you label someone a hater, you do that so the person's message is ignored, because of hate for the person speaking - in other words if you make the speaker unlikeable, hopefully, people wont listen to what that person has to say.
Second, when you stir the pot, you marshal the troops against the person, and that person is silenced out of fear.
This is uniquely "Liberal" in nature. Sure, when a (kinda) pretty blond Gifford gets shot, the libs call for "peace and tolerance", but ONLY then. I followed that AZ story carefully and honestly do not recall anyone anywhere near the main stream blaming a "right winger" for that crime. I am almost positive that MSNBC did not characterize the politics of the shooter. The gun issue was the main focus of the political debate, and rightly so, but I think that your accusation that the shooter was labeled a right winger is erroneous.

According to Gallup, 40% of all Americans consider themselves conservatives. This means that over 125 million people in America call themselves conservatives.
Assuming the word "most" means 50% plus 1, you're talking about imprisoning almost 63 million people for their beliefs.

LGBT folks have been murdered by people who hate them because of their sexual orientation for millennia. Why is giving the LGBT community members the same legal rights as heterosexuals such a threat? Boil it down to its simplest form and marriage is nothing more than a legal joining of assets - don't have to have religion enter into it at all - that's a choice, but it's certainly not mandatory in order to get married. You don't have to love the person, know the person..., really, the only requirements are that you cannot currently be married to someone else, and the two people seeking the legal union must be of the opposite sex. It just doesn't seem fair or right. If you want God involved, that's great, go for it, but you cannot oppose same sex marriage based on religious reasons because religion does not have to be a part of the legal joining of assets. Is there another argument out there against same sex marriage? If so, I haven't heard it, and to base your opposition on a factor or a belief system that is not a mandatory part of the process is illogical.

I,m sick and tired of politics and race. Last time I checked we are all Americans. When will people learn in politics it is divide and concur, Its the oldest trick in the political handbook. Just think if we stood together what would happen, but as usual people fall for the same trick. No one is better than the other. that is why we are losing this battle. People get killed or hurt everyday and politics are not the cause, people are sick and everyone that falls for this are sick as well. It saddens me that we as Americans cant get along, we are not the enemy of each other. So I challenge everyone not to judge people until you have walked in their shoes. I'm A white male with plenty of friends that are from other races and we all get along just fine.

of the population and of course is done in the name of "fairness". Even some who may work and pay
now feel that they are entitled to take from others who have more. It is true that everything seems to
become politicized, but when you have the President of this country endorsing this "take" because
they have it policy, it becomes a problem with most people (people whom many call conservative).
The president has also worked very hard to create and enhance class envy. With attitudes like this,
