The winning Powerball ticket was purchased at a local Sunoco gas station in Michigan, but the ticket holder remains anonymous -- which is fine, because under state law, the winner has a year to come forward. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

The Bush tax cuts cut jobs, and cut tax revenue.
Many of the most wealthy sold off their US assets. For Good Reason. It was the best time to sell. They would get to pocket more of the money to buy foreign products like Mercedes, Yachts, and vacation hideaways in Croatia, Italy, the Caribbean etc.
A very publicized example was the selling of America's Beer, Budwizzer. Obviously wasn't my beer I preferred local brews and still do. Now Anheuser Busch is owned by a foreign (Belgium/Brazil) company.
The reduction of taxes paid by the super rich has destroyed this nation.
Back in the old days when this nation was the greatest in the world there was no income taxes.
The nation was not at its greatest prior to income taxes.
Post-World War II prosperity is when the US was at its peak as the global superpower.

He or she will be required to pay 4.35 % Michigan state tax and 35 % federal tax BEFORE he even gets any money. The government will deduct that, and give him the remainder.

That's entirely false and you know it. We spend more on most of those items than ever before. Education is a cluster just like the rest of the government because of greed and corruption, I'll agree with you there. But the average American is just as much to blame. The habit of keeping up with the Joneses is what has nearly killed us, that and allowing honor to become a punch line. The rich guys didn't help, and there's plenty of crooks there too, but most of them did nothing more than what the average person would do in the same situation. Nobody wants any personal responsibility any longer and it's everyone's fault. Nothing can be fixed until everyone understands that. You and I, and everyone else, have to accept responsibility. We're doing it to ourselves.

Ever wonder how the State's odds are increased by lost tickets?
Just as soon as the almost 50% of Americans that don't pay ONE CENT in federal income taxes start paying their share. And a lot of them are the middle class. They get to write off their kids, their daycare, their medical, their modest house, college funds, etc., etc. So a lot of people under the 100,000 a year mark don't pay anything.
My boss who makes $120,000 a year (which is just middle class in Southern California) for his family of 4, pays no federal or state income taxes because of these write-offs. I make $65,000 a year, but because I'm single, no house and no kids, I paid a combined total of $12,000 last year in federal and state income taxes. Like that is fair!!
So stop demonizing the rich! Everyone should pay a flat tax on income. Get rid of all write offs and deductions. That is fair taxation. Nobody, including the rich or me should have to subsidize others.

Sorry, everyone that has income should pay their proportionate share in taxes. If you choose to flip burgers for a living at $15,000, you should pay the same percentage in taxes as someone making $250,000!

In 12 years, it has cost US of over 1 trillion in tax revenue due to tax cut. It hasn't worked for 12 years.
Now, Ryan wants another 10 years of tax cut that will cost US of 700 billions and get rid off "capital gains" which the main sources of wealth for most of the rich in the last 15 years.
Romney and Ryan then claim that Obama is doing a "robbery" job of cutting ineffective subsidies of 700 billions of health insurance while they are attempting to use that same 700 billions to fund the tax cut for the rich. Talk about twisting the story.
Hopeful American: Your logic is strange. Neither you nor your boss would pay more under any plan by Obama but would under Romney. Romneys plan to cut the tax rates would be pennies for people of your income but lower the average 1%er $260,000 a year. Romneys tax cut for the 1% would add $1300 a year average and maybe much more. for middle class taxpayers by taxing your employer health care and eliminating home mortgage deductions.

Let's look at some of the others.
I am sure this is true in other communities. In Eugene OR there is a dangerous section of road (Beltline Hwy) where merging traffic must condense into 2 lanes to cross the river. Immediately over the river many cars exit causing huge slowdowns. Mergers don't have time to merge. People can't get in the left lane to let them merge if they want to exit.
The city tried to build a bridge to reduce the traffic for those people just going from the River Road neighborhood to the other side of the river to shop and work. It was voted down. The bottleneck is the worst in the area responsible for many accidents.
REALLY you don't think this is happening? Prisoners are being let out of jails without serving their time all over this nation.
New jails are sitting empty. During Katrina there was a new and unused facility near Portland that was offered as temporary housing but was rejected because they didn't think it was right to house the refugees in a jail.
Criminals commit crimes with little fear of jail time.
Because there is no money to maintain them our water systems are failing. Sinkholes have opened up in various communities when the water mains break.

I didn't say we aren't willing to pay for education, I said that we are spending more on it both in terms of adjusted and actual dollars and we aren't getting our money's worth now. Again, why throw more money at it when the money will just be wasted by some dumbass union official on another executive assistant instead of a teacher? Or maybe you think we need more principals and admin than teachers. If you dive into the numbers you'll see where the education money goes.
The proper place for that money to come from is from the utility bills that people pay. Period. Why should someone in Florida pay for water improvements for someone in Michigan? I'll grant you the bridges, maybe. But states still tax for them. States should maintain them. Maybe if the states didn't have the federal government telling them where they have to spend their money maybe they could.
I agree with you that fraud and waste cost us money; I completely disagree that the answer is more taxes. It most certainly isn't. To put it another way, if you had a friend who couldn't pay his bills because he was a crack-head, would the answer be to give him more money? No. It would be to get him off crack.

I am more of an optimist. I have traveled quite a bit, met people from all over. There are some total jerks but most people are good people. I've been in huge cities and I've been in tiny communities that only have one church. This country is full of good people. The jerks just make more noise.
I will agree that our churches have abandoned true Christianity. They have become more of a social gathering place instead of a place to worship and SEARCH OUT the truth. Churches today are more interested in indoctrination than in open discussion to find truth. Still there are many true and devoted people in the churches and many good people still lead churches.
The problem is the anti tax people are against all taxes. They have poisoned peoples minds.

It took years to get that project started even though it is a twin to the former Cypress Street Viaduct that pancaked during the World Series Earthquake, (1989 Loma Prieta), in the San Francisco area. Nobody wanted to pay for it.

Our 1970 High Schools covered grades 10, 11, and 12.

Churchill
Today HS covers grades 9, 10, 11, and 12. In 42 years they have added ZERO new schools.
The Eugene Springfield Metropolitan area has grown from about 200,000 in 1970 to over 350,000 today.
The school district has added a small school for international studies and a small school for kids that are at risk for dropping out. Gee I wonder why kids are dropping out today? The personal attention teachers used to be able to give to kids is gone. Nobody wants to pay for schools.
I noticed you didn't cover the jail and prison issue. This is huge, we want law enforcement but the anti tax people have gotten people into rejecting paying taxes - This is KILLING us.

According to the official records, education spending has gone up roughly 30 percent in the last two years alone, with no end in sight. Take a look at the actual records on a detailed level, and no, I'm not going to do your homework for you. The money is going disproportionately to administration and higher level positions. In other words, people are skimming, legally. Our expenditures on education have grown faster than the increase in population and inflation can account for, by far.
Gossip doesn't cause our money to be misspent, it causes the sheep to not notice/not care. It's a smoke and mirrors tactic by the folks in Hollywood who are demonstrably in the Left's pocket. By the way, we see how well the "vote them out" tactic worked with Charlie Rangel or Marion Berry didn't we? Even when a person is a proven fraud and thief the voters don't care enough to get rid of them. It's because we as a society glorify the wrong things. Just look at our "elites" of society. The jail and prison issue is the most complicated one you raise. The others are easily explained by graft and corruption in the main but this one is a bit different. Part of the problem goes back to the fact that we as a society have failed to instill values in our children. We've taken the "or else" out of the equation. Pop culture glorifies prison stays as getting some "cred" and you wonder why the prisons are over-full? We treat our prisoners better than our citizens and you wonder? Bring back the chain gang and some real consequences for crime and we might see some changes. As it stands now it's just a vacation from the street. I'll agree it's a mess but throwing money at a problem is never an answer (unless you're on the Left).

The bottom line is this: until the government can show themselves to be good stewards of our money they don't deserve a penny more. I only ask to place your arguments in context because it is my experience that the majority of people asking for higher taxes are the ones who don't pay any.
The problems you raise aren't fiscal problems, they're social problems. You can't fix them with money, they can only be fixed with a change in society. A change that must include a return to integrity, honor, and a strong sense of morality. No, I'm not talking about religion. What you see is a steady rise in costs up until about 1980, then it makes a short drop.
At 1984 it goes up again.

Really isn't true. I have a friend who watches those shows you complain about. He not only knows what is happening here in North America, he knows what is happening south of the border, all the way to Argentina. He is especially knowledgeable about Chile, having been born there.

Let me qualify this, I am a Conservative Christian who lives by Christian teachings that were common years ago and are hard to find today, (Newton, Spurgeon, James Montgomery Boice, the Original Southern Baptists [James Petigru Boyce], etc). I think the Churches are responsible for the loss of morality, and parents not being around to raise their children.
I lay the escalating divorce rate right on the church as virtually all churches bless adulterous marriages (Mark 10:11-12).
I have heard so many 'Christians' tell others, “God would want you to be happy. It is OK to divorce”.
Divorce forces both parents away from the kids.
Churches now focus on passing judgment on the secular world (not a biblical principal) and spreading hate.

...you will see that the tax rate for the most wealthy was much higher in times of economic prosperity. As their tax rate went down unemployment went up, the National debt skyrocketed.
I don't think we should go back to 1986 when it was at 50% but the 39% is not a whole lot different than 35% today.
There is no question the gap between the űber-wealthy and the rest of us has gotten way out of hand.

Appletoad: You don't even now how Romneys taxed. 31% of his income is taxed as carried interest at 15%. Carried interest is commision interest earned by vulture capitalists and hedge fund managers. Commision interest would be taxed as normal income for any profession but those 2. It's nice when the rich can write their own laws.

Congratz to the winner or winners. He or she is smart not to cash in right away. With that much money, you definetly need to talk to a financial advisor and tax accountant first. Most banks will not allow you to put that much money in a regular checking or saveings account. So you really need to know your options. Then there is the safety concern. Once your name is out there as a winner, you get bombarded with give me money requests and actual face to face beggers.

It"s only been one day. i would probably take a week or more to claim myself . michigan law says you can't claim anonymous. with the town of Lapeer only being a population of 9000 i'm sure the winner will find alot of new friends.

starbuck49 - They may be lucky (again) if all they pay is the state's standard income tax rate. In Oklahoma there's an added 1/2% above the regular income tax rate on lottery winnings. But somehow I think I could have probably struggled on with the left-over $126M-$131M for at least a week or two. Plus you'd have the added bonus of being the perfect Presidential candidate: "Yes, I'm a multi-millionnaire, but I paid the maximum Federal tax on my money! Vote for me!!"

Too poor my butt! When you figure all the (paid for by taxpayer) freebies they get and still gets 5-8K as a tax refund, a person I am acquainted with brags about it and my CPA stated it happens all the time. I hope this person gets their winnings out of the country ASAP and enjoys the rest of their life on a sheltered island happy to be away from the socialists trying to redistribute the wealth.
With a paycheck like that I wouldn't jump too soon either. I'd let the curiosity calm before I made my claim. On the other hand, maybe an illegal immigrant made the purchase just for the fun of it. Makes you wonder about their status!

I would wait for several months since I am in good shape, then get an attorney/tax advisor. Since I am a senior I would take what I get and give most of it to those few people I care about and worthy charities and organizations. I would give as little as possible to the government

could have also been someone on vacation or passing through to another state either way someone is really lucky but if they know they won they probably don't want to come forward yet..shoot I wouldn't after awhile but most states they require your name and a photo..
