Robbie- They aren't being arrested because the federal government is prohibiting states from enforcing existing immigration laws, putting injunctions against them for trying to or writing new immigration laws for themselves. The federal government has no interest in enforcement- that's why they aren't being arrested.

I'm no "journalist" but I would have appreciated some investigative journalism while you were there "covering" the story. You should have asked each of the protestors the following:

1. How did you get here?

2. How have you made a living while here?

3. Have you started a family while here? Is your spouse legal?

4. What have you done for healthcare while here?

5. What have you done about the education of your family while here?

6. What is your goal for staying here? What do you want by staying in the USA?

7. What made you want to come here? Where did you come from?

Those are good questions that I haven't been hearing from any "reporters" covering the story. Why ask them questions? To get a better picture of the other side of the legal coin. I'd like to know why they are here and why they came. I'd like to know their view of the country's laws and do they ever wish to abide by them. I'd like to know if they let visas expire or not.

First it's not black and white. Some of the illegals didn't know they where illegal until they applied for jobs. Then they found out that they where born here and raised as a legal citizen, but where not. I read the article, or one similar to it on the story. This is a select few that require hand picking. It also mentioned the gaps in the construction industry as a result of them leaving as well. It takes time to let the economy adjust. The law is still being contested...there hasnt been time to fill these jobs. Pay a living wage, and they will fill in.

Let me give you an example. I worked in the flooring industry for many years. Installers have taken a 50% pay decrease in the last 10 years as a result of the influx of illegal labor. Pay our citizens a living wage, and they will come back to work.

Over 50 Members of the Varrio Azusa 13 Gang Were Charged With a Civil Rights Conspiracy

A Latino gang accused of attempting a racial cleansing of African Americans in Azusa, Calif., has been indicted for a federal rights conspiracy, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

Prior federal cases involving street gangs have included racial violence allegations, but this indictment is only the second time in history that federal civil rights laws have been used against members of a criminal street gang.

"Azusa 13 waged a campaign of hate against African Americans—a two-decade crime spree in which African-Americans were harassed and attacked," said Andre Birotte Jr., the U.S. Attoreny for the Central District of California.

A federal grand jury issued a 24-count indictment last week that charges the 51 defendants with a broad range of crimes including extortion, robbery and murder.

The three-year investigation of the Varrio Azusa 13 gang culminated this week in an early morning raid involving almost 400 law enforcement officials. Azusa is a city of 45,000 people located about 30 minutes northeast of Los Angeles. Only 3 percent of this population is African American, while over 65 percent is Hispanic.

"What is underlying this whole thing is a belief held by some people that the Mexican Mafia ordered essentially a racial cleansing in some Latino neighborhoods," said Thom Mrozek, the public affairs officer for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

This gang has been active for about 20 years acting through violence, threats and intimidation, court papers claim. The violence has not been restricted to rival gang members, extending also to regular civilians.

"This has been a 20 year conspiracy to violate the civil rights of African Americans in the city," said Detective Robert Landeros of the Azusa Police Department. There are incidents involving this gang from 1992 to May 2010, according to the Azusa police.

Six members of the Azusa gang have been charged with civil rights violations for harassing and sometimes attacking African Americans, either to push them out of the city or to keep them from moving there.

The gang has about 400 members with 50 indicted yesterday. According to the indictment, 23 are already in custody and 12 fugitives are still being sought.

The number 13 attached to the name of many gangs in Southern California indicates a connection to the Mexican Mafia, the prison gang that controls Azusa 13. "M" is the 13th letter in the alphabet.

According to U.S. Attorney Birotte, the Mexican Mafia gets a slice of the Azusa gang's profits from drug sales. In exchange, the Mexican Mafia allows them to maintain control of their territory and protects them within the prison system.

The Azusa raid is the most recent attempt in Southern California to control tension between Hispanic gangs and African Americans.

In 2009, over 140 members of the Varrio Hawaiian Gardens gang were charged for racially-driven crimes, and in 2007 members of two other gangs in the Los Angeles area were arrested for racial hate crimes.

According to Operation Safe Streets, a branch of the Los Angeles Sheriff's office, there are 1,100 documented gangs in Los Angeles County.

"This is all part of gang culture," said Sgt. Byron Wainie of the OSS. He says that the violence is "sometimes on racial lines, sometimes based on geographic lines and sometimes narcotics related."

Jorge Luis Martinez, Detective Supervisor at the Gangs and Narcotics Division of the Los Angeles Police Department, agrees that the racial issue is one of many. "There is a rash of gangs that sometimes commit completely racial crimes, but it's much less than gang-on-gang crimes," Martinez said.

Most of the gang members indicted this week are facing possible prison sentences of at least 10 years if convicted.

"This gang has waged an insidious two decade campaign of violence fueled not only buy drug dealing, but also by racial hatred," Birotte said, "We hope that this case will signal an end to all this behavior and will help vindicate all of the victims who have suffered over the years."

President Obama has deported more illegal immigrants than Bush did in eight years. However, our law enforcement is not unlimited. We have a finite amount of law enforcement available, and we can't simply round up and deport everyone. Every Presidential administration has to decide the best way to use the limited resources available. The President has determined that our law enforcement needs to focus on deporting dangerous illegals and criminals, rather than focusing our efforts on college students and people who obey the law and peacefully follow the rules.

Also true, states have exclusive legislative powers over citizens and businesses who reside or establish businesses within the states sovereign boundaries......So why can a state, or it's voters not enact a law making it a 4th class felony, with a maximum sentence of up to 7 years on the second offence for knowing hiring an illegal immigrant or foreign national without a federal approved work visa..

my family has been in the carpentry business for generations. now i cannot get work, simply because i cannot compete with laborers who can bid lower because the do not pay taxes, insurance, medical care, and education expenses like i am required to do. if i do not pay these things, i get arrested. if they do not pay these things, nobody does anything about it, and you and i end up paying for it. this is just not right.

I was a framer for 35 years and then the Mexicans moved in and undercut everybody. Your story sound just like mind. I was paying my guy 150.-200. a day while they were being paid 6-7 dollars so how could I compete? I'm retired now and some of the guy that worked for me in the past ae doing nothing but repairs needed due to shuddy work done by the Mexicans.

I hope that people are thinking of all of this when they cast their votes this fall. Do you want leaders who ignore stated US Law and change the rules in the middle of game for a select group to secure votes?

See how your Senator and reps view all of this. Are they in favor in giving ILLEGALS rights? Do they want to give these people work permits at a time when our own citizens are unemployed?

Is requiring a legal ID Racism? Or in fact will it secure that all voting is legal. Who in this day and age can go through their lives w/o proof of identification? You need a birth certificate to get a drivers license, to get into the military. You need an ID to open a bank account, to get on a plane, to get a passport. You need Photo ID to collect unemployment or apply for welfare.

For the very rare older Americans, lets say over age 80 who perhaps were born in an area where the records were not accurately kept, I might say let them pass, but how did they apply for Social Security without some legal form of identification?

Think of all of this, and consider your state and federal representatives views on it. Who are the people that are hiding in plain sight? WHAT are they hiding? Did they run away from debts or marriages they couldn't deal with? Are they deadbeat parents who are neglecting the care of their children by not paying child support? Are they running from the law for some crime they committed in another place?

We as Americans need to STAND UP for what America stands for. ONLY Legal Americans should be working in our shops and ONLY Legal Americans should be voting in our elections.

Greg, they already have laws like that. How's that working? Government has been talking about reform as long as I can remember. I just think we are part of the problem. We want the illegals out of the country, but are we really willing to pay a lot more for those goods and services? Perhaps it would balance out with lower taxes because of fewer people on government handouts, but I doubt it. I know in Pennsylvania we were going to have our property taxes lowered due to allowing gambling in the state. I haven't seen it yet.

I have no problem at all when people speak a language different than mine (English). However, I do have a BIG problem when the state and federal governments have to print documents, ballots, oaths of office, etc. in multiple languages because the people that come here illegally are too lazy, ignorant, or stubborn to learn the language of the country they have broken into and are now reaping the spoils of. I don't want to "press 1 for English"! How dare these illegals demand ANYTHING... they should not even be here! And... legals OR illegals should at least learn enough English to communicate with the rest of us in our American tongue. Yes we very upset about the whole issue. I am in the US for more than 20 years, married to an American, I did the whole process by the book from Student visa to Citizenship. I had been employed all the time, got a college degree, even a Master Degree. Two jobs while in college to pay my tuition all of the above to achieved the American Dream. When you are really an immigrant and you love this country you work hard to honor the country to give you some many opportunities you don't slack. Really Mr. President could not be worst timing ever.

Just imagine that on all major cable networks employers being fined tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars for hiring illegals it would solve the problem really quick,i think the government is the biggest problem i grew up in a farming community in madera and fresno ,ca. @figment- My kids and grand kids have to pay for their food,medical,housing,cell phones,They do not get it for nothing like the Illegals. In my state Maryland our governor gives them everything he calls them New Americans. The state has buildings just for them. Its a place were they can go get medical, food stamps,housing,and even a car. The state gives them drivers license no questions ask its true.Gov Omoney says it is safer on the highways if they have licence. Don't worry about insurance if they hit your car they well not have it. So i say kick them the hell out.
