Undocumented immigrants confront author of strict immigration laws

Isela Meraz and Fernando Lopez lead a group of undocumented Hispanics in protest against anti-immigration laws during a briefing on the civil rights effects of state immigration law held by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in Birmingham, Ala.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Protesters opposed to strict state-level immigration laws confronted one of the key writers of such legislation as he testified at a U.S. Department of Justice civil rights hearing here on Friday.

Holding up small banners with the words "undocumented" on them, four self-proclaimed undocumented immigrants stood up one at a time to denounce the laws, interrupting the testimony being given by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who helped author the measures in Alabama and Arizona.

Kobach, who advised those states before being elected to statewide office in Kansas, and others were invited to speak about the impact of such laws by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, an independent commission of the federal government.

But the session was interrupted by protests.

"I have received a lot of discrimination. I am Maria Huerta, undocumented and without fear. I have no fear! You have to respect our rights. They are civil rights," the 65-year-old woman, originally from Mexico, cried out just before throwing the hearing agenda on the floor. "I leave it there. Keep it. You don't know how to respect human suffering."

Huerta is among a group of undocumented immigrants traveling across the country in a caravan to highlight their situation and those of others still living in the shadows. Before landing in Alabama, the ragtag caravan made stops in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. Their ultimate goal is the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., where they intend to press their concerns.

Moments before Huerta spoke, another group of five women stood up and turned their backs on the commission as Kobach began his testimony. They wore shirts that spelled out "stop hate."

Emotions ran high later when protesters called Kobach, a "liar," with Mayra Rangle, 32, telling commissioners: "It's a shame you invited him and him," as she pointed to those invited to speak.

After the hearing, Kobach said the protesters had the right to voice their opinions, but the interruptions were disrespectful.

"It's inherently rude and it disrespects the American process of deliberation and careful policy making," he said. "It's really unfortunate when one side in a debate results to personal insults instead of bringing information and making a coherent point."

When asked why he didn't respond to them when challenged, he said: "I was there to respond to the panel not the protesters."

During the protest, the civil rights commissioners argued about the presence of the demonstrators, with Commissioner Todd Gaziano, a Heritage Foundation fellow, denouncing the lack of security and Commissioner Michael Yaki, of Michael Yaki Consulting, noting the demonstrators were acting in the form of non-violent protest.

Gerardo Torres, 41, a Mexican who lives in Phoenix, said after the hearing that those who wrote the immigration laws were out of touch.

"I don't think they have ever been in contact with regular people," he said. "At the end of the day, I think they just go back to their gated community. ... They are not in touch with reality."

I don't understand. Why haven't these people flagrantly violating our laws been intercepted and deported? It's not like the INS people can't find them...they're in your face. This whole story here is crazy...how can this even be happening? What is the INS for anyway?

For these no paper, no fear people lets make them fear breaking our laws. Mine the border between the US and Mexico. For those who have no papers and no fear lets implant a chip in their head that has a tracking device and deport them back to their countries. If they try to sneak in again to the US the chip would activate and blow their head off their shoulders. 1 less illegal to worry about. Why is President Obama letting law breakers stay in the United States?

We are a country under assault from these illegal aliens. Time to call in the National Guard and rid this country of foreign invaders. And if they feel so strongly about civil rights then why don't they exercise their rights in their home country?

what right does anyone have to protest, if you are not a legal immigrant, you have no right, we do'nt go to other countries and protest that we do'nt like to follow their laws. just deport every last one of them and tell them the drug lords need help , they can be mules for them.

Americans don't respect human suffering? PLEASE.....Americans send more money to third world countries to help provide food and shelter than any other country on the globe! Maria....go back to Mexico and protest there! See how long you can protest before they throw you in jail.

Amazing that our government does not round all these illegal aliens up and send them to the other side of the border. America get your backbone back and ship these people back to THEIR countries.

What is up with this new "undocumented" term? The word is ILLEGAL. And excuse me but "what civil rights?" You are NOT citizens of our Nation. Civil rights are reserved for our citizens....go home and get the civil rights of you nation.....if you don't like that so much....then apply to come here LEGALLY then we will give you some civil rights!

Throw them ALL out! If the illegals want rights, they should go to their respective countries and demand rights. This is disgusting! Can you imagine ANY American illegally immigrating to nearly ANY other country and demanding rights? In my opinion, Mexico alone owes trillions for their complicity in the dilution of US socioeconomics.

OK...all that can be said on this is: REALLY????? If you're undocumented- your are a CRIMINAL. If you SUPPORT these CRIMINALS- YOU are a CRIMINAL. Now, I'm only going to say this because we're at a "flashpoint" in this powderkeg we call a nation: You lawmakers, you government (Fed, state, local) ignoramuses, you P.C. bleeding heart private citizens, and media idiots: you better cowboy/girl the crap up and get rid of these people and their supports and their "anchor" babies and ship their sorry tail ends home BECAUSE, YOU (the aforementioned) are going to cause the Peckerwoods, Aryans, KKK, Minutemen, and any one else with an axe to grind on these no-accounts illegals, to come out of the woodwork and the streets will be covered in blood, not "business as usual." I'm serious----anyone with an axe to grind is going to get fed up with it sooner or later, and these criminals PLUS innocent people are going to get killed. I'm sorry if that offended your sense of nobility, but mark my words- anyone with an axe to grind is just going to start profiling and start shooting and they will NOT stop until the streets are red.

Wow, since Obama enacted that law, they have become even more brazen and out of line. I really dont see him getting re-elected. I foresee more violence in the future because they are will be trying to assert their new found freedom while breaking the law and people are not going to put up with it and fists and weapons will fly. I also didn't know that you get rewarded for breaking the law. So if I go and rob a bank I will get immunity from prosecution?? Oh I bet all those bank robbers in prison will be mad that I got away with it and they didnt!

    Here's my two cents...

    1) It's true that every wealthy nation needs low skilled workers for grunt jobs ie what most of the illegals do (UK and China are two examples.. look it up)and while I get that there would increase in costs for materials, food, restaurants, etc I really would like to know how bad that REALLY would be.

    2) While I get that all the illegals are trying to do is get work b/c Mexico and other countries just aint got em, that in NO way means you get to live here free, get free health care, education, pay no taxes JUST b/c you do a "low end" job and IN NO WAY should you be allowed to DEMAND anything when the federal government/state LEGAL citizend get the bill. The illegals who protest either got huge b*lls or are freakin stupid. In no way should you get AHEAD of any citizen for anything including scholarships for college.

    3) We all know that illegals have been living here for like 30-40 years and its part of the "shadow minority" around us. We seem everywhere especially in TX,CA,AZ AND NY. The cost of them here is astronomical to the tune of $26 billion last time I checked

    4) Obama is addressing the problem. He won't solve it. Can't solve a problem that has been growing for 30 years. You cant simply send ICE all around the border states and the Northeast and round them all up b/c if an ILLEGAL citizen lives here and gives birth to a child the CHILD IS a US CITIZEN (same for me if I was BORN in France I would automatically have French citizenship). Good luck in the courts with all of that.

    5) My solution is more fenced that actually exist (not these crappy ones along the Arizona border). Watch Border Wars on NGC if you don't believe me.

    6) Punish companies who hire illegals. That can be tracked and dealt with in less than 2 years I think. If we are going to do anything MANDATE anyone illegally here get a work visa or government documentation. If not jail and redeport. ICE could do this as could the ATF and make a significant damage to the drug cartels which are part of this too.

7)I personally don't feel bad when the ones caught here illegally complain and whine when they paid a coyote to get them here illegally in the first place.

The US belong to LEGAL citizens and b/c of the crime factors that the Mexicans bring I flat out won't move to So Cal,TX

"It's inherently rude and it disrespects the American process of deliberation and careful policy making," he said. That's putting it mildly. Illegal aleins want to pick and choose which laws they will follow. It is a disgrace our country allows these people to spit on our laws while bankrupting us. What happened to the rule of law in this country. We have sunk to a level where a dictator and his zsars change and make their own laws. They disregard legally enacted law with impunity. Where is our congress. Where are those who have taken an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the United States. God help us.

Just wanted to add that both parties are responsible for this dire situation. Republican bowed to the will of big business who want cheap labor. Democrats see them as a way to grow their ranks ading more people who rely on govertment from birth to death. Meanwhile our citizens are out of work and the wealth of the middle class is rapidy deteriorating.

Those commenting should research when and by what means their ancestors arrived to America. Respect Spanish contributions. Realize the correlation between our success and exploiting a perceived 'inexhaustable resource'. Get some perspective and contribute something positive.

Our ancestors were immigrants, but most came here legally. Immigration cannot continue indefinitely because resources are finite.

Illegals are here because they get jobs. Most are hired by businesses that know they are illegal. But of course, they work for less, so the businesses make more money. Many, probably most of these business owners are conservatives who support the Republican party. If you want to stop illegal immigration, then strongly enforce laws against hiring illegals. Good luck trying to get the Republican party to support that.

                Gang-Related Violent Crime

Gang-related crime and violence continues to rise. NGIC analysis
indicates that gang members are responsible for an average of 48 percent of
violent crime in most jurisdictions and much higher in others. Some
jurisdictions in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, Oklahoma,
and Texas report that gangs are responsible for at least 90 percent of crime. A
comparison of FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) 2009 violent crime data and
2010 NGIC gang data illustrates that regions experiencing the most violent
crime—including southern California, Texas, and Florida—also have a substantial
gang presence (see Figure 1 and Map 7).

Street gangs are involved in a host of violent criminal activities,
including assault, drug trafficking, extortion, firearms offenses, home
invasion robberies, homicide, intimidation, shootings, and weapons trafficking.
NDIC reporting indicates that gang control over drug distribution and disputes
over drug territory has increased, which may be responsible for the increase in
violence in many areas. Conflict between gangs, gang migration into rival gang
territory, and the release of incarcerated gang members back into the community
has also resulted in an increase in gang-related crime and violence in many
                jurisdictions, according to NGIC reporting.

Immigration is what this country has been built on. However the word LEGAL must be the issue here. If one is here illegal regardless of anything else they are here "AGAINST THE LAW" no excuses nor any reasoning change that. Hence is one is here illegal then they have none of the rights that are guaranteed to LAWFUL CITIZEN"S by the Constitution of the United States. The saddest thing is that our president doesn't feel that the law of the land is worth enforcing even though he was sworn to uphold it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why do they keep screaming they have rights? What rights?"IF" they were in jail, they would have rights. As it stands now they are just "Un-Arrested" criminals. I would have absolutely no problem making a citizens arrest on any of these people for breaking our laws. I also would have no problem giving them a ride to the middle of the Arizona or Texas desert and pointing the way South.

Like I've said about these people before:

"Bring in the zip ties and the Green and White Bus!!!
I'm sick of you saying you love this country and want to be with your
children that were born here. You are a THIEF IN THE NIGHT that stole their way
into MY country. I DON'T need or want you. I know your culture, I know your
country. There is nothing you can give us that we can't go to Mexico to see. We
already see plenty of your criminals, graffiti and drugs, and attitude!
I owe you NADA!!! GO HOME you Banditos!
We don't NEED you to pick our tomatoes or make our beds, we can do that or we'll invent a machine to do it. You have been disillusioned by the Liberal leftists of this country that you are somehow indispensible. YOU ARE NOT!
You have no respect for our country abusing every social program we have. You contribute little in return for what you recieve.
You are bankrupting our cities and states.
What could you possibly have to offer us? More crime and babies to take care of?

                      NO THANKS!

Again, bring on the zip ties and the Green and White Buses it's time for you to go!!!"

This story should have been about the Mother of all Sting Operations. A large group of people doing a blatantly illegal thing and no law enforcement around to make arrests and load up the deportation vehicles heading back to the border.

I'm not insensitive to their situations just that there is a right way and a wrong way to go about being a US citizen.

Right Way: go through the proper channels, do the paperwork and put in the time.

Wrong way: Sneak across the border, keep your head down and hide out until some amnesty program comes along that you can hitch your wagon to.

The biggest problem is that as a nation, we complain about the illegal alien problem (screw PC) but do little on the surface about it. This makes us look like we'll moan for a while and then ignore it.

Maybe if some psycho started hunting down and shooting illegals then that might get their attention enough to pack up and leave. Then if you want in then do it LEGALLY. But alas I am no into seeing people get shot and killed but I am into these social parasites being booted back to where they came from. Go back and change your stinking 3rd world hell hole you came from. Being illegal in Mexico is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Other countries want to see a bank deposit of 500K or more so if you get ill you foot the bill and not their tax payers. Check to see how much the Chinese paid Canada when they all wanted out of Hong Kong before the country was turned over to the Chinese from the British. BIG BUCKS!! And yes, every state in this country has a right to set their own laws because WASHINGTON IS DOING NOTHING. F Obama, F Joe Biteme and all the bleeding hearts out there. This is how you feel? Then pay for it yourself because I am sick of supporting parasites.

Since they have the UN-DOCUBUS we should have an UN-DOCU**BUST**.
