NEW ORLEANS -- Louisiana police have charged seven people in connection with shootings near New Orleans on Thursday that killed two sheriff's deputies at a trailer park and wounded two others, authorities said.

Brian Lyn Smith, 24, of LaPlace was charged with attempted first-degree murder while six others also face charges linked to the violence, St. John Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman Dane Clement said on Friday.

The charges stem from a pair of related shootings early on Thursday in and around LaPlace, about 25 miles west of New Orleans, in which a gunman shot and wounded St. John Parish Deputy Michael Scott Boyington, 33, as he performed off-duty work directing traffic at a parking lot for Valero Energy Corp.'s St. Charles refinery, St. John Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre said.

The gunman fled, and officers investigating the incident ended up at a trailer park in LaPlace. As they were interviewing two suspects, someone came out of a trailer with an assault weapon and shot dead the two officers and wounded another, Tregre said.

The slain deputies were identified as Brandon Nielsen, 34, and Jeremy Triche, 27, while deputy Jason Triche, 30, was wounded.

All of the charges are in connection with the shooting of Boyington, police said. The investigation into the shootings at the trailer park continues and is being led by the Louisiana State Police.

Those charged include Terry Smith, 44, Derrick Smith, 22, Kyle David Joekel, 28, and Teniecha Bright, 21, all accused of being a principal to attempted first-degree murder, Clement said.

Chanel Skains, 37, and Britney Keith, 23, were charged with accessory after the fact to attempted first-degree murder.

Suspects Brian Lyn Smith and Joekel remain hospitalized with injuries they received in the shooting and will be booked upon release from the hospital, Clement said.

High-speed chase
All the suspects were listed as LaPlace residents. Bonds ranging from $350,000 to $750,000 have been set for each. The injured police officers were in stable condition and doing well, Clement said.

Authorities said Joekel was wanted in Kansas and in Nebraska over threats he was accused of making against law enforcement officers.

According to the sheriff's office in Gage County, Nebraska, Joekel threatened an officer and led police on a high-speed chase that ended when the car crashed and he tried to escape on foot.

He is also wanted in Marshall County, Kansas, allegedly for making threats toward law enforcement and escaping on foot after a car chase there, authorities said.

Louisiana State Police spokesman Sergeant Len Marie said several of the suspects have criminal histories and previous arrests, and one was on probation.

Folks, check out NOLA.com, Times Picayune Newspaper, photos of the arrested there. 5 Whites plus 1 female black, they belong to an anti-government group called "sovereign citizens," that should tell you who and what they are about, evil is an equal opportunity inflicter. Haven't a clue why Reuters didn't publish phots of these cretins but NOLA did.

Ben, too many innocent people have been convicted of crimes they didn't commit, DNA, exoneration's. Let the courts do their thing and do it right. They'll end up in Angola and some will ride the needle, I'm not willing to line them up and shoot, they may do that in China, Iran, Saudi but not here.

I always like to be a whodunit sleuth or if you prefer a Sherlock Holmes a la No Sh*it Sherlock. I have two hypotesis, my first one points to blacks. And why you ask? Well, actually this doesn't require rocket science, since blacks and other minorities have been used and abused by the police, it stands to reason that they might be the culprits. The second option is, as always, the racist tea partiers that love their 2nd amendment rights to kill minorities. But, if asked to choose one or the other, I'll have to chose the first option, that is why I called it my first option. I'm sorry every time anybody loses his/her life at the hands of anybody, be Jew or Muslim, be Christian or not, rich or poor, cause to me life is sacrosant even those who have sinned or committed crimes. Justice is to apply justice fair and square, a la Norway, not a la Americana. Too many hands in our jurisprudence to be fair to no one. Since we love to outsource every thing and any thing that it isn't tied down, maybe we could outsource justice to Norway and in this way, everybody wins, cause I'm sure that Norway would like to get their hands on our war criminals. All those in favor say aye, the ayes have it. Motion passed.

I have 2 options for you.

    1. You could just keep your mouth shut & let people think you're stupid.

    2. You could open your mouth & remove all doubt.

I see you decided to go with option 2.

Let me explain why I am not impressed, shocked or interested. The United States of America has become a violent society. I don't know why, but it has. Life is getting cheaper and cheaper as time goes on. Too often I hear (or read) comments like: "Why don't we just kill these guys" (those who have committed heinous crimes) or: "Just take that guy out and shoot him, hang him, castrate him, beat his brains out; or any number of acts against some one we don't like or hate for whatever reason. Now if it is a law enforcement person, well, he or she, has accepted the position of a soldier in the fight against crime and has a right to die for his, or her, cause and beliefs. I say, all these people who shoot or kill innocent people, go and shoot a cop. Both of you will be armed and will be fighting for your cause, and the battle ground will be equal. Leave the innocent people out of it. Make a statement and do what you will. Just leave us civilians out of it.

Not really. It is no more "violent" than it ever has been. In fact violent crime rates are going down. Of course numerically the actual number might be increasing, the number per 100,000 is lessening. It's just that we have more people now than we did 10, 20 or 30 years ago.

Additionally, 10, 20, 30 years ago, we weren't bombarded 24 hours a day seven days a week with "news" or whatever politically spun pablum the media want to post as news. Years ago, this would have been an incident which garnered local coverage that likely would have followed everything through trial. Today, we get the immediate news and then it dies as there's always something else to titillate the voyeurs on the web with.

The problem is SOME no all but SOME specific outlets, specifically one that has a history of being caught "editing" news to fit the agenda of the week are so adamantly anti this or pro that that they have ceased being a viable and reliable source for news and have become on on-line version of the National Enquirer. Of course I'm not saying that the media outlet that has control of this site is that organization, I'll let YOU be the judge of that.

One more time for you anti-gun jack wagons.

              1. An assault rifle is a fully automatic military grade rifle such as an M-16 (selectable 3 round burst or fully automatic). Full auto meaning it keeps firing as long as the trigger is being squeezed until you run out of bullets. It fires 5.56x45mm rounds.

              2. An AR-15 is the civilian version of the M-16. It is semi-automatic (1 trigger squeeze fires 1 round) & also fires 5.56x45mm (.223 civilian version of this round). A semi-auto firearm automatically loads the next round from the magazine (though most of you call it a clip, which is wrong) into the chamber making it ready to be fired again.

All modern pistols (not revolvers), many hunting rifles, & many shotguns are semi-automatic. They all function the same way as I just described above.

So for all of you saying that we need to ban 'assault rifles' well these criminals didn't have 'assault rifles'.

For all of you who say we need to ban semi-automatic guns what you are really saying is you want to ban all modern pistols (i.e. semi-auto handguns), many hunting rifles, & many shotguns.

BTW, do you also realize that almost all hunting rifles (available in many different calibers), whether they are semi-automatic or bolt-action, fire a larger caliber/more powerful round that does more damage at longer distances than the .223 caliber round the AR-15 fires. Yet I don't hear anyone ever talking about banning hunting rifles.

What happened to these LEOs is tragic. Too bad the surviving officers allowed these scums to live.

Even if guns were currently outlawed these criminals/thugs would've had guns. Because criminals don't follow laws & can always find a way to obtain firearms!

My sentiments exactly. Thank you. Thank you Thank you. Because I am so sick and tired of stupid ass people talking about "we need to ban guns", "we need very strict gun control laws", "semi automatic weapons are not needed"- bull@!$%#. I am so glad you educated these idiots and clarified for the rest of us who agree with you. Because these anti-gun @!$%#s are getting on my last damn nerve.

We need the second amendment and civilians do need handguns. Both of these are a necessity. And i wish these anti-gun @!$%#s would realize that. Every time somone committs a crime with a gun these @!$%#s post their biased idiotic comments as if every one that owns a gun is a criminal and does not have a need for a firearm. Im like will you all please stop it with this bull@!$%# about banning firearms and very strict gun laws.

Civillians do need something to protect themselves with againts ruthless ass criminals. Hell, criminals are not the only people who need, use or own guns. This @!$%# is getting out of hand. They sincerely need to stop and think what would happen if we could no longer own guns and criminals could. That would defininetly be an unfair advantage and not only that, if we were to happen have a very corrupt offical in office over our government we would have no way to defend ourselves. So all you who are against the second amendment need to seriously consider these factors. These stiutaions are very real possibilities and are very real threats. I am one hundred percent positive you dont want them to repel the second amendment you all loose your rights to bear arms. Please believe me. You think its horrible now. Let them repeal the second amendment and ban guns and see what happens then. Yall bewishing like hell yall still had the right to bear arms. I promise you that.

As a recently retired federal officer, I am troubled by the trend among criminals, criminals of ALL races, to bait and ambush law enforcement members out doing what their citizens have charged them to do. People have to rise up and support these men and women who go in harm's way every day, because the "thin blue line" is all that stands between citizens and these jackals that prey upon them.

That extends to the courts, with their track record of light sentences and early releases. It's time to make justice the priority, not political correctness. I don't give a damn what the criminal's race is - you do the crime, you do the time, or the perp walk, or whatever a jury of citizens says you do. Then, maybe, we'll see some potential dangerous felons think twice about their behavior.

I believe that we should understand that this is where our government and cooperate America are leading the country. Educated people are far less likely to commit violent crimes. It is also true that poor people are likely to commit more crimes than the middle class. Maybe we should force our government to improve our education system, and provide gainful employment for the American people. It is time we realize that America is falling behind other industrialized nations in education, and we are losing jobs to them as well. The citizens of America are not focusing on things that really matter. It seems that the most important thing to us is the political party we support, ignoring the fact that we have a dysfunctional political system. Unity and compromise seems to be completely out of the equation.

Why does the race if the perpetrators matter to you? Are you keeping count of what race of people commit certain crimes. Did you hear anyone ask the for the race of the young man who shot up the theater? Don't Kidd yourself, you are a racist and an embarrassment to your race and our country. Try focusing on something that really matters like the state of our politically divided country. Racism only adds to the problem.

You're probably correct in some cases.

LEOs have a tough job & most of the people complaining about them couldn't hack 1 day on the job if they became LEOs.

These people also need to remember that LEOs mostly deal with scumbags/criminals all the time. Officers also walk around with a target on their back everyday while on duty. That tends to change your view about people & makes many officers a bit jaded & cold/harsh towards people they come into contact with. Try not to take the attitude of a rude officer too personally & try to remember the difficult job they have.

I hope these turds have some kind of fatal injury while awaiting trial. Good cops and good people don't deserve to be gunned down in cold blood. But like a few other posters I want to know what weapon was used. IT doesn't matter as far as killing is concerned, it's just a tool. But here in "THE PEOPLES DEMOKRATIK REPUBLIK OF KALIFORNIA" law enforcement has begun to say "assault weapon" regardless. Some LE and some in the media say it is an attempt to convince everyone that every weapon is an assault weapon so everyone will be in fear of gun ownership (kind of like the hysteria that led to the Constitution nullifying "Patriot Act). FYI, Britain has very strict draconian, NAZI type laws against gun ownership. Armed crimes shot up and continue to rise. In Britain IF you are allowed to own one and you use it to defend yourself, family, innocent bystander etc. you are charged with their level of felony, REGARDLESS. But the laws have resulted in so many knife attack wounds and murders the British are considering...A LAW THAT WOULD BAN POINTS ON KNIFE BLADES. Please don't let the criminals win because they will be the only ones armed and don't forget most politicians are criminals.

I was at the gun store last week picking up a couple of extra boxes .40 S&W JHP's before the government gets them all. A bunch of hunters were buying all the .30-30 and .30-06. When I asked why so many one commented he was getting ready for the coming civil war.

Seems several groups are planning a country wide disruption to include riots, and looting around election time. Starting in the bigger cities then moving rural. He said he could knock down a buck at dusk dark on the run at 300 yards so when they head his way they will never hear the shot. Cool.

Which is fatal faster. a .40 Jacketed Hollow Point or b nearly invisible swarm of flying syringes carrying the deadly west nile virus.

The Centers for Disease Control reports symptoms include fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. There is no medication to treat the West Nile virus, or vaccines to prevent infection. People with milder illnesses typically recover on their own, but those more seriously affected may need hospital care. Health experts say prevention measures, include avoiding mosquito bites using insect repellant, and getting rid of insect breeding sites.

Emergency rooms are about to become swamped as the virus spreads. one more nail in the financial coffin of america. where oh where to hide from the needle with wings.

The biggest death blow to the human race is caused by the lowly mosquito. They are also the leading killers of humans of all time. Some estimates place mosquitoes as responsible for half of all human deaths in history. Some of the diseases they spread include: Malaria, West Nile, Yellow Fever, and general scratchiness. The mosquito situation is particularly horrific in Africa, where citizens are bitten by dozens of disease-carrying mosquitoes every day. Add in the fact that the mosquito can quickly develop almost overnight resistances to man-made pesticides, and it’s easy to see why humankind must put aside their differences and attack this common enemy. But that my friend will never happen. Put aside our difference that is. So don't fear the pis..tola. Most people who own one never have or never will shoot it. Last post..so long.
