Lincoln Police Department
Charlie Rogers, 33, of Lincoln, Neb., was arrested and charged with false reporting Tuesday. She pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge and was released on a personal recognizance bond Tuesday afternoon.
Updated at 7:58 p.m. ET: A Nebraska woman who claimed she was the victim of a horrific hate crime in July and subsequently charged with making false claims to police pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge Tuesday.
Police in Lincoln, Neb., who spent weeks investigating the case, arrested Charlie Rogers Tuesday for making a false report. Lancaster County Attorney Joe Kelly said a judge issued the warrant for her arrest earlier Tuesday.
Rogers, 33, of Lincoln, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on a personal recognizance bond after a brief court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
Her lawyer, Brett McArthur, said she maintains that the attack happened, according to The Associated Press.
Rogers told police three men wearing black ski masks broke into her home during the early morning hours on July 22, bound her wrists and ankles with zip ties, beat her and carved anti-gay slurs into her arms and abdomen.
Rogers also alleged the men spray painted homophobic slurs inside the home and poured gasoline around the house before lighting it on fire.
Rogers said she was bound and naked when she escaped and managed to knock on a neighbor’s door at about 4 a.m. July 22.
Police said they interviewed Rogers on four separate occasions. Because of inconsistencies in her various accounts of the attack and forensic DNA evidence, a warrant was issued for her arrest.

“A great deal of time and resources were spent investigating Charlie Rogers’ claims in hopes of identifying and arresting the three suspects in this case,” Lincoln Police said in a statement. “As the investigation progressed and additional interviews were completed, the department received results from forensic analysts and experts making it apparent that the physical evidence conflicted with Charlie Rogers’ version of events.”
Also puzzling was that Rogers wrote on Facebook on July 18 what they believe is a motive for faking the attack, according to The Associated Press: "So maybe I am too idealistic, but I believe way deep inside me that we can make things better for everyone. I will be a catalyst. I will do what it takes. I will. Watch me."
There was no apparent struggle in the room where Rogers, a former University of Nebraska basketball star, said she was attacked on her bed, the warrant for her arrest says, which also described the bedspread as appearing “neat” and “evenly placed on the bed.”
“There was no apparent blood on the bedspread; even though Ms. Rogers reported she was rolled on to her stomach after she had been cut on her arms, abdomen, chest and front legs while being held down.”
Forensic tests of Rogers’ bedding at the University of Nebraska Medical Center found no traces of blood.
Additionally, the FBI sent photos of the cuts on Rogers to a coroner’s physician for Lancaster County, who consulted with Dr. Michelle Elieff, a forensic pathologist. According to the warrant, Elieff said Rogers’ cuts appeared to be self-inflicted.
“This opinion is based partially on the fact that the cuts appeared to be superficial and symmetrical, avoided sensitive areas of the body, appear that they would have taken considerable time to do and are accessible to the victim and follow the victim’s frame of reference for reading and writing.”
Elieff also noted Rogers had no bruising, even though she alleged the men beat her.
Police also found a pile of clothes, a pair of white knit gloves and a red box cutter on the living room floor. Rogers said the gloves did not belong to her, but DNA testing determined she was the “major contributor” of DNA inside of them, according to the warrant.
Investigators discovered that the gloves, zip ties, blades and a red utility knife were purchased five days before the alleged attack at a hardware store in Lincoln. During an interview, Rogers told police she shops at that store.
Police showed a clerk from the store a photo lineup and the clerk identified Rogers as the person who bought the items, the arrest warrant says.

Police said that they also discovered graffiti spray painted on the basement walls after Rogers told the initial responding officer about it the morning of her alleged attack. But in a subsequent interview with Rogers, police said she did not know anything about the graffiti because she left her house immediately after the attack, the arrest warrant said.

Rogers gave an interview shortly after her alleged attack, saying she wanted to counter those who doubted that the attack ever happened.
News of the alleged attack sparked multiple vigils attended by thousands of gay-rights supporters who donated money in support of Rogers in cities throughout Nebraska.
At the time, Rogers said she would not attend the vigils because she was in hiding and wouldn’t speak publicly about the details of her attack for fear of influencing the police investigation.
But after a week, police said they had found no suspects, leading some to question whether Rogers made it all up.
On July 27, Rogers gave an interview to KETV in Omaha, saying she decided to make her name and face public to counter those skeptical that the attack ever happened.
“I understand that people sort of have a hard time wrapping their heads around the things that have happened, as do I,” Rogers said. “But I’m a person with feelings, with concerns. For people to think that this doesn’t happen here, it does. It did.”
If convicted, Rogers could face up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine, the Lancaster County Attorney’s office said.
A statement about Rogers by the City of Lincoln Police Department noted the city investigates 120,000 cases every year.
"A relatively small fraction is later determined to be false," it said. "This case will not impact our trust of crime victims. Criminal incidents, especially hate crimes, are unique and viewed as such. We do not want crime victims to hesitate reporting in the future."

Seems she is still holding onto the story more is the pity. The sad thing...there are victims who will never seek help or justice because of attention seeking, self serving, liars like this woman. This woman needs to first-apologize to men in general...second- apologize to the GLBT community that came to her aid....third- to all of the people who donated time and money through sympathy and concern.

I considered posting through a point of sympathy...you know this woman must really be suffering from some mental deficit, but I just can't muster compassion for someone who would go to this length to get attention. To try to set the police on some fictional men, who cut and defaced her own body and who torched her home....sorry can't even say she was was nuts...she is just criminal.

Now you know how black people feel, every time a black person does something, almost every comment on here is about the WHOLE race and not the individual. I'm just sorry that so much time was wasted investigating this hoax (I felt the same way about the Tawanna Brawley lie), money that could have gone towards real crimes. I hope she gets the help she needs and I hope if a real crime is committed against the LGBTI community, it's taken seriously and not ignored because of this ish!!!

Timothy - Actually about 4% of the U.S. population (admittedly) is gay. Every now and then, someone who, for whatever reason they have, needs to seek attention. This woman did more harm to gays who are REALLY victimized in society. She is just like the woman last year who told the entire town she had cancer, the town rallied around her, had fund raising events for her and she got all the attention she wanted and a lot of money. Problem was...she was healthy as a horse - and never had cancer like she claimed. People do this type of thing all the time. People who stage a "break in' at their homes so the police respond, they get attention, compassion from others as being a victim and it meets a psycological need. She obviously has other very serious issues, just like millions of people everyday who make up stories that they were victims of crimes. She may be dealing with her own issue of "self hatred" and would go to extremes to carve derogatory gay slurs into her own body. I hope she is arrested and prosecuted. A lot of tax payer dollars and police investigation time went into her case, then I hope she gets the help she obviously desperately needs.

I've witnessed many gays and lesbians resent hetero's simply because they're not gay. They're hardly free of guilt, but the media doesn't like to show that side of reality. I read a lot of comment sections on a lot of sites. I like to know what people are thinking, how they view the world, etc. Call it a hobby.
Anyway, there are a few things I see over and over (and I guarantee I will get attacked for this). On almost every web thread, no matter what the subject, the comments always devolve into political rants. How you can take the mental illness of this woman and turn it into a divisive political rant is beyond me. But, to jump into the fray, here is the other thing I see time and time again. People like rbjko and ayatollah who consistently attack and insult anyone who does not think like them, and with the same breath (so to speak) accuse the "libs" of doing exactly what they are doing. If it weren't so pathetic, it would be hysterical. From Mitt Romney all the way down to the commenter on MSNBC, it is always the same. Do or say something irrational, untrue or just plain inflammatory, and then say, You liberals are all hypocrites. Do you actually read what you are writing? Does the irony and your own hypocrisy not just reach up and slap you in the face? Or, are you so deluded that you actually see the world this way?
Well, don't bother answering. I already know what your answer will be. And by the way, pretty much everyone blames G.W. Bush for ruining the country. Wanna know why? Because he did.

I don't know who the heck you think you are JH, but I said absolutely nothing in my post that was progressively liberal. I stated she should be arrested and prosecuted. I stated she is most likely seriously in need of psychological help. I stated she is most likely dealing with issues of her own "self-hatred" to use cutting measures on her own body to carve derogatory slurs into her own body. I stated she wasted tax payer dollars and time spent by law enforcement. She is not a representative of any group other than a common criminal....and I made that point clear. Just because she is admittedly gay, does not mean she is a representative of all gays. Just because a clergyman or boy scout troop leader is a child molester, doesn't mean they are representatives of those groups. Just because there is one lousy rude flight attendant you came in contact with, does not mean she/he is representative for all flight attendants, and so on....and so on.
I am not a bleeding heart liberal, what I am is a person with common sense and made a comment regarding the story. Get some control over your outrage.....why did you direct it at me? I've given 31 years of my life to law enforcement, and I know what it takes to investigate fictitious crime reports. I clearly stated she needed to be arrested and prosecuted. I just read too many posts here on NBC that demonize anything and everything conservative when an idiot says or does something and he is associated with the right. I must say that I'm sorry if I offended you. My mother told me to respect my elders and since you said on August 12th that you spent 34 years in the medical industry and now you say you spent 31 years in law enforcement, you are my elder for sure.

You're exactly correct. She had an agenda to seek attention and would go to extreme measures to get it. She perpetrated herself as a victim and to make it worse, a victim of a hate crime (which would bring her even more attention) to feed the need she had. She wasted hundreds of hours of detectives time let alone the money spent on forensics. Unfortunately, all she will face for her criminal consequences will be filing a false police report which is a misdemeanor and in most states that will only carry (if convicted) a max. 6 month sentence (unless it's suspended) and a $300 fine.
I used to be sympathetic towards many of the political issues that the LGBT community were supporting (ex: gay marriage) and was not opposed to these issues, even though I am a conservative. I even would regularly donate money to some of their organizations. I was of the mindset that if you are gay and simply wanted to be married to your partner of 25 years or if you felt you were truly being treated inequitably solely because of your sexual preference, then you had my support. But sadly after being verbally attacked by so many anti-hetero people here, seeing the hate filled actions of Adam Smith (ChickFilA video guy) and this woman, and seeing my elected leaders and officials who are gay drop everything they were elected for and take up extremist positions to promote their own agenda - you are quickly losing my support. For all of those on here who have said "she doesn't represent the community" and "she's just mentally ill and looking for attention" I call Bull Cr@p. She DOES represent your community and your community rallied around her for weeks and put her out there as your poster child. She did not do this to get attention, she did it to manipulatively promote her agenda and to falsely manufacture an anti-hetero stereotype - one which everyone in your community jumped on the bandwagon with. All of those who are trying to make excuses and distance themselves from her are the same ones who define anyone who doesn't 100% maniacally support their opinion as "hate-mongers" and "bigots" and "evil" and dozens of other names that begin with the word hate. If someone simply disagreed with your opinion, you attacked them with everything short of a "death to the heteros!" war cry. I was treated badly by homosexuals just for being straight. When my ex Bi-sexual girlfriend decided she wanted to be with a guy (me) instead of girls. Her group of gay friends begin calling us "breeders" and were very rude and nasty to me. Would only invite her and not me out to places and would hang up on me if I answered the phone and I was nothing but nice. They didn't know I have a gay brother who is very close to me so I could care less about their choice of partners male or female. So intolerance goes both ways (By the way these weren't kids these were adults in their late 20s to mid 30s)

First of all, you state that you have read my "bashing" of Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney and of my post regarding the story on Rep. Akins (not Atkins). And just because you may not know actually anything about anyone who post on here, for the record: Who do you think performs medical forensics, documentations, criminal analysis, and sociology work in law enforcement? Or is your tunnel vision so shewed with judgements of others that you don't know what those jobs actually entail. I've posted in regards to Mr. Romney my concerns with his pick of Paul Ryan for the Republican party, and my issues over his taxes and credibility regarding Bain Capitol. I have also posted I have a right to be concerned, I am a Republican. I have also posted my disgust with Representative Akins "legitimate rape" comment, as most people in this country did, including Republican leaders in our party who have asked him to step out of the senate race.
And for the record....I don't get offended easily, especially by a sarcastic comment such as yours. I never said I spent 34 years in the "medical industry" i said I spent 34 years in healthcare. I knew when I read this article last week, that this pycho bitch was lying, but of course all the liberal whiners and gays were milking it for every tear they could get. LAUGHABLE, in a sick sort of way!

Her politics and social agenda, if that Facebook quote is true, has consumed her life. It doesn't matter what she is or what agenda it is. The truth is she appears to have faked an attack meant to shame straight people that choose not to support her way of life into feeling sorry for her, ashamed of their point of view, and change their views to match hers or at least support her general opinion. That's WRONG.
The problem with this isn't the view she's trying to get across, I don't personally care what you do and whom you do it with as long as you're all adults about it and I feel that's the only reasonable view for anyone to have. The problem I have is that she tried to beat down people that are entitled to their own opinion with an in-your-face story about the cruel nature of people that don't support what her life choices are, and her showing that there's hatred directed at her at an extreme level. A story she made up, wasted public safety resources on, and still claims to this day because she refuses to admit it was all a lie.
There's outliers in every group. I don't blame Democrats for liberals like Obama and Pelosi that hijack their party and swing it far left, nor do I blame Republicans for the christian wackos that are homophobes. I do blame people if they give their support to someone after there is a track-record of out-of-touch actions. For example- anyone that now votes for that loon that said real rapes hardly ever get you pregnant. Or, when Obamacare was forced down our throats when 68% said HELL NO in every major poll (and still do). If you support those people now that you know them and their record, then I DO say you're part of the problem.

She is being charged with a misdemeanor. If they had arrested anyone in this incident they would have been charged with a felony hate crime. Fox was accused by Howard Dean, former DNC Chair, of broadcasting a tape from an NAACP meeting of a government worker clearly stating that she discriminated against whites in her job. Phoenyx13, the majority of those hate crimes happen because the person is HETEROSEXUAL, and NOT because they are HOMOSEXUAL! Furthermore, there are dozens more crimes that are never proven and, as such, would clearly tip the balance of the sexual orientation crimes in favor of the heterosexuals, that is, it will prove that the heterosexuals are the targets of the hate crimes, because, like it or not, they are attacked far more often than the homosexuals are anyway. Just ask that lady who was assaulted and left for dead when she supported Proposition 8 in California a few years ago or the families of people like John Wayne Gacy or that lady who was in the movie named "Monster." Actually, there ARE reports of gays raping gays and lesbians raping lesbians but there are many reasons why the numbers are lower, KrisBy, than the general part of society. The first, and most obvious reason is that there simply are far fewer GLBTTIQ people than the majority of society as a whole. The second reason is that it is, believe it or not, an even BIGGER stigma to REPORT a rape for GLBTTIQ people than it is for heterosexual men and women. The third reason is that GLBTTIQ tend to actually be the kinds of people that are into more kinky sexual things and one of their biggest kinks is, no big shock, rape fantasies. Now I am not saying that ALL GLBTTIQ people are into that but, adjusted for size, their numbers on that would probably far outstrip those desires than what would be found in heterosexual people. The fourth reason, and this also applies to the heterosexual community, is that they fear reprisal from their attackers. The fifth, and final reason, is that, which is also applicable to heterosexuals, they are afraid of being shunned by the people that did this to them and, quite often, these people also hold not only a significant amount of power over them but they also do so with their families and they also do so in society in general. The amount of pedophilia by priests in churches, particular Roman Catholic ones, is a good example of such an action in practice.

My cashier commented on me buying tons of cat food. I have wild cats and racoons out that I feed. But I told her I have a hundred cats and eat some cat food myself. Hate crimes should be abolished. If you do something horrible to someone you should be punished. You shouldn't be punished less just because the victim wasn't gay, etc.
