Michigan Powerball winner comes forward

The winner of last week's $337 million Powerball drawing has come forward and contacted Michigan Lottery officials.

The winner's name and where they are from has not been released.

The winner has one year to claim the prize.

The ticket was sold at a gas station in Lapeer, Mich., a city with a population of about 8,000 people, 60 miles north of Detroit. If the winner is a Lapeer resident, the city would receive some $2 million in tax revenue.

The winning numbers from the Aug. 15 drawing were 6, 27, 46, 51, 56 and Powerball 21.

The winner has the option to receive their money in lump sum or annuity payments over 30 years.

Andi Brancato of the Michigan Lottery Commission said no details about the winner will be released.

The last big Powerball jackpot was won in February by Louis White of Rhode Island. That prize was worth $336 million and was the third largest Powerball jackpot in history.

WOW! That's pretty fast. Hope he/she had time to set up a blind corporation to hide the money and buy lots of personal liability insurance. But probably not, just can't wait to get their paws on all that money.

I was just going to post that--BLIND TRUST......BEST WAY TO GO--as long as the state you win in doesn't DEMAND your name become public; I hope not. All the nuts in the world will be at your doorstep!

I would want to keep it anonymous if I won the lotto. I wouldn't want all my greedy relatives and or supposed friends knocking on my door. No lawyer needed just don't tell anyone lol just let them know you got a promotion and have to travel for a while :)

Doesn't anyone at NBCNews.com check submissions for basic grammar? I quote: "The winner's name (singular) and where they (plural) are from has not been released."

My third grade teacher would have been appalled had I turned in something like that. Shameful!

Perfectly acceptable when the gender is uncertain.

From Wikipedia---"The "singular" they is the use of this pronoun as a gender-neutral singular rather than as a plural pronoun."

      Stephen,

You are incorrect. The word "they" is plural by definition. The sentence SHOULD HAVE read, "The winner's name and where he/she is from has not been released." And shame on you for believing Wikipedia!

thieves are standing in line when one aquires dough through gambling. the political gangster of the supreme court, earl warren, gets the credit for dumping a federal law against lotteries. thomas jefferson was given special attention in violating this statute. for he was in heavy debt.

I wish the winnner all the best. Perhaps the winner and his or her family would like to move to beautiful and warm Daytona Beach Shores and enjoy the good life down here. Until then, may the loving and powerful Force of the Shores go with us all.

Lapeer is not exactly the think tank of Michigan...Hopefully they had enough sense to hire a lawyer, tax accountant, and a fee based financial adviser.

Michigan does not allow anonymous winners. The names will come out and they will need to move out of state and hide in a gated community with high walls, fences and security guards...Hmmm, sounds like a jail of sorts.

Best thing to do is, first, don't come forward until you have already made plans to leave, possibly leave America if you choose. Don't say a word, if you're working, just give two weeks notice making up some phony reason. Then you come forward, take it all at once, then disappear from sight for the rest of your life.

In a very violent, sick, tense world, it's the best thing to do. You don't want people near you knowing you won. You will be killed for your money. Guarantee!!!

LOL. Don't hold back. Obviously, I knew the outcome. My point begin, I am so tired of so much damn negativity in the news. "So don't read it" Wow. Great advice. I don't like paying taxes either, or exercising. You all missed my point entirely...Where is the common good. "News" like this raises my BP and gets me pissed off. I just want some feel-good news. That's all.
