'Grandpa,' 81, accused of molesting young girls in Florida

Broward County Sheriff's Office

Murry Snider

MIAMI -- An elderly Margate man is behind bars after authorities say he molested at least two young girls and admitted to a detective that he had been abusing girls since he was a child.

Murry Snider, 81, was arrested Tuesday on 10 counts of lewd or lascivious molestation of a child under 12, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

Snider, who lives in the 6400 block of Brandywine Drive North, would have little girls call him "Grandpa" and invite them into his room for movies and snacks, where he would molest them, the BSO said.

According to the BSO, detectives began investigating Snider in May after a teen in Sebring told her mother that Snider repeatedly molested her when she was between the ages of 6 and 9 from 2004 to 2009.

At the time, Snider was a maintenance man at the Executive Economy Lodge at 555 S. Federal Highway in Pompano Beach.

The BSO said they've identified two victims and tentatively identified six others and believe there may be more. Snider told a BSO detective he'd been molesting girls since he was a child and didn't know how many victims there were but that he did it whenever he had the opportunity, authorities said.

Snider was born and raised in Tallahassee, Alabama, and in the 1990s lived in Williamson, Jefferson, Hardin, Panola and Orange counties in Texas. He lived in Las Vegas in 1999 then moved around Florida, living in Sebring, Clearwater, Largo, St. Petersburg and Miami.

The BSO said he has a clean criminal history except for an old prostitution charge.

Snider, who is suffering from lung disease, was being held without bond Wednesday. It was unknown whether he has an attorney.

Please, Please teach your children that no one is allowed to touch you unless your Mom says it's okay.

Why weren't these parents teaching their children not to go into the homes of neighborhood men? All he had to do was say, "Call me Grandpa" and the parents let them go? What the hell is the matter with these people who hand their babies over to anyone who asks for them?

Let the "sweet old guy" in your neighborhood come to visit your children in your home and in your presence. (If he really is just a lonely old guy who loves children, he'll be happy to be invited.)

MACH!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's because people assume an elderly man/woman will be harmless. People need to realize pedophilia is a mental illness that doesn't go away with age. I know of no case in which a pedophile has been cured. The best you can hope for is that they learn to control their urges. But, they have to want to learn (which some do, they don't like what they have done and don't want to repeat. Doesn't hapeen often enough, but...) AND they have to avoid situations of temptation...not invite children into their homes.

I - as a volunteer and survivor - councel victims of childhood sexual abuse. Thankfully, one can move forward and have a good, happy life. But it does forever change you.

Philly, I know many "old" ladies in menopause - I'm closer than I want to admit to being one of them. They all really enjoy sex (and the no pregnancy worries). So maybe they just don't want to have sex with you? Or maybe you aren't in that age group yet and you have misinformed preconceived notions?

amazing.... Mach- do not blame the victims, nor their parents. this man is a child molester. at 81 yrs old, he claims to have been molesting girls since he was a teen. There is a high probability that he is guilty of molesting hundreds, even thousands of young girls in his lifetime. He is responsible... period! Death by a thousand cuts is too good for him!!!

it is good to teach your children of things to look for: prevention is always good. For example: There are no secrets. if an adult tells a child to keep a secret, usually starts with something innocent but progressively move towards somethign sexual. This is called "grooming" of the victim. Having worked with kids, I made it a rule never to say or do anything with the kids that i wouldn't do with their parents right there present/observing. If i talk to a child about anything, I encourage the child to let their parents know they talked to me and what we talked about. I never ask the child to go anywhere to be alone; no shut or locked doors.... tell your children to let you know if anyone tells them to keep a secret, or do something with them and not tell anyone; the child is most likely being groomed. Manipulation via bribes or threats are another form of grooming. Talk openly with your children; let them know they will not be in trouble if they talk about their bodies, and that any topic is okay.

LB - I know Mach, and she loves kids. I don't think she was blaming the parent (certainly not the kids!). I think she was more wondering why their was no conversation going on. A child should be taught to not go with ANY adult without their parents knowing.

There is a story about a man in OH, 70, who approached children. He had a dog, so they stopped to pet it, and he tried to persuade them to go back to his house to play "video games". The kids said no and told their parents. Obviously their parents had this discussion with them. And, this man was a raging pedophile. (And, at the risk of TMI, I know this on a personal level, not just because of the news story.)Does it mean these parents did anything wrong. But a conversation should take place, and not just once, but on going. And not in a scary way but just informing. My son is 12, we still talk about this (expecially now that he's on the internet more).

      mozzie-600:

I agree with your post, but...just sayin'

"Hey mom, is it okay for daddy to be touching me like this? Yes, dear, it's okay. Hey honey, where did you put the meth/crack pipe?"

No "normal" person/family would even think of such a thing but it is happening alot in this world.

Children do need healthy doses of "supervision" and "education" and "discipline" and the ability to "effectively self regulate" as growing children until they develop/demonstrate "wisdom" as maturing adults.

But as for this old man in the article, all he needs is for a qualified clinical therapist to punch his nose into his brain.

Is it really necessary to publish his home address? The local authorities have this under control without inviting nationwide mobs to show up and take the law into their own hands and muck things up before the accused is even given due process.

        Reply#2 - Wed Aug 22, 2012 1:50 PM EDT

Where does it list his actual home address? The "6400 block?" For all we know, that block could have over a hundred homes, with very few people even knowing half of their neighbors. Journalists (and I use that term loosely) have been using this terminology for years when identifying a suspect. Rarely if ever do they print the actual, complete address.

I think most people figure that what goes on behind someone else's doors is that person's business not theirs. I think most people would find a man who like to dress in diapers and hire prostitutes to "nurse" him and have sex with him dressed as a baby would be disgusting, but David Vitter, after admitting his perversion was re-elected back to the Senate. So apparently, the Republican Party condones perversion, unles they think it is gay.

Ignorance is not bliss. Education is power.

Pedophiles, especially predatory pedophiles such as this do not "get better with age." It isn't something someone "grows out of." Most predatory offenders are not amenable to treatment. Know what to look for and teach your children what to look for. There are many good sites on the web that teach you how to do this without terrifying your children... Stranger danger DOES NOT work... 85% of children are molested or raped by people they know and trust...

@Raymond I agree with you in that pedophilia is at a most disgusting level. As far as printing his home address I assume they did this because they are looking for more victims.

One reason pedophilia is growing is because (as in this case) although we have lists of sex offenders and you can get them in most states, many, many have not been caught (yet). We have to protect ourselves and our children. Often people assume if they know who the offenders are (from lists) they and their children are safe because they avoid "those people." NOT SO.

Harassing the perpetrators and making them move only makes it harder to keep track of them, hence making us all LESS SAFE. No one wants them in their neighborhood, bad news, they are already there. Every neighborhood has them... do the research it is a fact. If it isn't a grandpa or a cousin or a stepfather/stepmother or another relative it is a priest, teacher or a coach or a classmate ..... the list goes on and on. There are different types of offenders. Do your research. Seriously, they are NOT all alike. You CANNOT pick them out of a crowd.

Just because you have a list of known offenders, remember there are many more out there that aren't on the list (or are not registering). I don't say these things to scare people, these are just facts.

Educate yourself, again knowledge is power. Listen to your children, trust your gut, investigate. I do not recommend violence of any kind, no matter how tempting that may be. Know who you are dealing with. Fortunately, the internet can help in many ways.

I am very glad they caught this person. I hope that children will get the help they need and the past victims will come forward to get help as well. I'm very saddened that he wasn't apprehended sooner.

I lived in Florida for 21 years. The State has numerous problems, more than I care to go into now, but to write it off as a Florida problem is simply wrong. Pedophiles are everyones problem. The fact is, where ever you live, this perversion is present. Your neighbor next door or maybe even one of your relatives. If they have contact with your children you need to keep watch. If you find out don't keep it a secret, even if they are related, they will only hurt others as well.

As a side note, wonder is the GOP would consider that "forcible" enough for them? Would that qualify under the scrutiny of the all - knowing Adkins and Ryan? Just think if any of this monster's victims were to get pregnant they could now have to prove it to a what ??? board of men???? wow that sounds like Afghanistan...but we don't stone victims yet....we just want them to have "prove" it to us or we will make them carry and have a baby! But by googly we will make sure we get rid of WIC and food stamps and aid to dependent children and medicare too! And if possible free school lunches!

Bob, real monsters are those who dress themselves up in Bible verses and flags but want to deny others the right their personal freedoms. Just like the men running for the highest office in this country, a slimy business man who was born with a silver spoon who was a bully and took delight in putting people out of jobs and robbing them of their pensions. That is a monster!!

Or the other guy who got public assistance (SSI) who would now deny others those same benefits. A man who would tell this man's 9 year old victim that she should have the baby he forced into her. Ryan would forbid a nine year child to have a medical proceedure that would spare her years of hardship.

Ryan doesn't believe in rape unless it is at the end of a gun or knife or if the female is beaten severely, so by Ryan's own account these babies were not FORCEABLY raped, so I guess this man's victims, 6-9 year old victims seduced him and forced HIM to have sex with them. Ryan could be the future leader of our country.

Romney and Ryan see a country where American women wear Burkas so that we don't tempt men into raping us. The think WOMEN are the agressors and men are victims of their own physical urges. All women have to do is wear the wrong clothing, be in the wrong place, act in the wrong way and she DESERVES to be raped! The whole Republican party want to force women back into the dark ages!

You have confirmed what Ryan has been saying about the Obama campaign. Fear, lies and deceit. Too bad. And actually I am a Theophobe if any phobe at all. And that pretty much eliminates any human especially homos. And all I did on that topic was present a mathmatical fact. Which makes homos truthaphobes. I can be just as stupidly creative as anyone I suppose.

Nothing I have said is untrue. Ryan did sponsor a bill with AKIN that said abortion, even in cases of rape, would be illegal. Ryan, himself, defined "forceable"rape. Rush Limbaugh refers to all women who take birth control as sluts and prostitutes. David Vitter like hiring hookers to have pervert sex with him. All of this is factual.

I did extrapulate that women if the Romney/Ryan win that womens rights will be severely "restructured but this is based on what the Republican Party is saying about women. Forcing us to carry unwanted babies but not punishing the men who impregnated the women. Forcing women to have unneccessary medical proceedures, like untra-sounds if we are thinking about aborting a child, (but the baby daddy doesn't have to sit through this) One republican is trying to make it illegal for a doctor to tell an expectant mother that their baby might have birth defects. One Republican is say that babies created out of rape are gifts for God. I am not making this up! Or how about Akin who believes that a woman can't get pregnant during a rape. he thinks the egg is intelligent enough to know consentual sex from rape.

This guy knew he was busted and confessed. He has been raping little girls for over 70 years. He doesn't even know how many victims he has had. Girls didn't come forward back in the day because they suffered in a culture where everything had to be hidden and forgotten. You think think the 1940's/50's/60's/70's were safer then today? WRONG! We have the internet, social networking, and ACTUAL liberation for women now and girls feel they can come forward now without stigma. It's so sad that all those girls, that this sicko molested for the last 70 years, became women who have probably struggled with so much hardship from this all their lives. Trust me, I know.

Maybe, if girls and boys that this happens to feel safe coming forward, they can save the next generations from ever having to go through this. I know it will never completely go away, but you can't be a serial molester who goes on and on with generations if you are caught on the first one.

Unfortunately we have people who are trying to drive the victims back into the shadows. Just this week we have people defining rape as legitimate or forced. We have men who say all women using birth control are sluts. We have women who are saying babies concieved in rape are "gifts" from God. All this rhetoric is going to force victims back into shame. Paul Ryan wants to force women who have been raped to carry the product of rape to term. It is not a good time in the USA to be a woman who has been raped!!

Funny how you're worried about only female victims, blue, it seems as though it has never occurred to you that males can be victims also and not just young boys. How shameful is it to be laughed at, accused of exaggeration (or worse), presumed to be weak because a strong man would never let themselves get caught in that situation? All of this in addition to depression and adjustment concerns following the abusive occurrence, whether it's some level of sexual molestation or rape. If we presume the claim in these cases to always be accurate and truthful and think like actual adults, we can get past the issue of "legitimate" terminology and leave the actual burden to the justice system to determine on a case by case basis, instead of polling the court of public opinion. Perhaps even more shameful is to be deliberately left out or overtly forgotten. Just because there's a higher prevalence of female victims, placing the entire focus on that higher percentage does a disservice to all victims, just as in circumstances where the adverse concerning gender is true. And for the record I don't think any victim should be responsible for pregnancy resulting from their abuser's conduct, however if a victim were to choose to accept the situation for whatever their reasoning, I respect that choice and support theright to have it, either way. Also for those of you arguing how pedophilia and homosexuality are similar because at one time they were both considered to be cognitive/behavioral disorders will never get anywhere in this society arguing that case, your point is factually valid on its face but the overwhelming protective parental instinct found in females and males among several mammalian species, (and others), is being exerted socially, particularly in Western cultures where social norms are beginning to express more and more of the female voice, even an extreme majority of men have been conditioned to abhor child abusers with equal fervor in our own society, ask almost any parent and most non-parents what the punishment in a case like this should be and the response is likely to be grisly, you just can't fight the motherly, (parental), protective instinct, it's reflected in our legislation, sometimes society defies logic and logic isn't necessarily morality.

I can't even comprehend how he was able to get away with this for so long. The line of victims must be massive, and yet he's only gotten caught NOW? Did these poor girls say something and no one listened? Did he threaten them and make them feel like they couldn't say anything?

dragon, sad isn't it? I know of someone who offended, was caught and convicted in his 30's, served 3 years in jail and wasn't caught (notice I didn't say offend) again until he was almost 70. And he thought it was society's problem that they didn't accept the "love" of a man and a female child.

He was a pedophile until the day he died. And I KNOW he offended before he was caught the first time and strongly suspect he was after.

It's time for the laws of this country to recognize that child molesters/rapists will not get better and will never stop unless forced to. I don't think the death penalty is too harsh to impose. Let's cull the vermin from herd.
