Feds allege drug ring run from Indiana prison with guards' help

Forty people were arrested Wednesday in federal raids involving a meth and heroin ring allegedly run from an Indiana prison by two inmates with the help of corrections officers, authorities said.

The Indianapolis Star reported that the indictment alleges that the two inmates used cell phones to arrange drug deals with dealers in California. The charges include the distribution of methamphetamine, PCP, LSD and heroin.

The Associated Press reported the alleged ringleader is serving time for murder and attempted murder.

The indictment alleged the activity occurred at the Westville Correction Facility in northern Indiana and the Wabash Valley Correction Facility in southwestern Indiana, the AP said. It wasn't clear at which facility the two inmates alleged to be running the ring were being held.

The indictment alleges the corrections officers smuggled drugs and cell phones into the prison.

Seventeen of those arrested appeared in a federal courtroom in Indianapolis Wednesday. They were ordered held without bail after being deemed flight risks.

One man had to be escorted out the courtroom after he appeared to be  falling asleep or passing out in court.

Some of Wednesday's raids occurred outside the state, but a spokesperson for the FBI told the Star the focus of the investigation was in Indiana.

They could just change the prisons name in the story and reprint this article for every other prison in the country. But the FBI only busted this prison because someone forgot to give the FBI their cut.

The criminals are doing what criminals do--commit crimes. The "other criminals", (the guards), should share their cells with them.

Man, this is all about $$$ in a privatized penal system. The guards earn @!$%# wages, the inmates can buy and sell them. Legalize pot and have union employees as guards...not enough tax breaks for the wealthy.....America has gone to hell because of greed by the wealthy...Theey should be locked up with R-money as their leader.

Being lawful and honest person/family seems to be minority in this country...

"One man had to be escorted out the courtroom after he appeared to be falling asleep or passing out in court."

This is a tactic used by prisoners who state that they didn't understand their due process or rights, because they were "incapacitated" during the proceedings.

At that point you adminster a tazer to the offending prisoner to wake them up. Works wonders.

Something is only a crime until it isnt. Do you still complain about booze dealers? That used to be illegal too.

What people choose to do with their own bodies is no ones business. And certainly NOT a crime. The real crime is fascists who dictate morality.

            Arizona-

Read up on Portugal's decriminalization of drugs. I think they did it in 2006. There's also a story in TIME magazine about the success of it. They offer treatment, not prison and the treatment isn't mandatory. It's up to them. They've seen a decrease in drug use, a decrease in crime and an increase in people seeking treatment. This applies to people doing and/or selling, not people robbing places and/or people for drug money.

The government is taking our money to put away non violent drug offenders. Drug abusers are the majority of those imprisoned in the US. It creates a lot of jobs in the justice system from police officers, judges, public defenders, judges, prison guards and all the administrative staff that goes with it.

Our system makes it impossible for these people to rise above their addiction and they forever stay in the criminal justice system. Our country has taken a lot of these drug charges and made them into felonies instead of misdemeanors. They give them many years in prison for pretty minor stuff. When they get out, no one hires them because of their "felony." Even after serving years they are put on probation and pay a weekly amount to be on probation along with all the drug testing required of them which they pay for as well. In addition they pay all sorts of court costs. So, no one is hiring them, and they can't come up with this money. One of two things happen. They are in violation of probation and hauled back to prison or they graduate into more serious crime to feed themselves and pay their fines and probation fees. I worked in Social Services and dealt with all of these issues.

If you are caught selling your buddy as few as 20 Vicodin (I think it could be less than that as well) in the state of Florida it's a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison. And the majority of States have these same excessive mandatory minimum sentence laws. Do you really want to pay for that? Maybe legalizing all drugs isn't the answer but to lock non violent offenders up for that many years constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in my book! Then to impose all these fees and probation on them after they are released just sets them up for a one way ticket back to prison. How does this help society at all? It's just stealing your hard earned money in the form of tax to pay for this @!$%#!

Meanwhile, if it's a 'white collar' crime, if you do any time at all, often times it's peanuts in comparison. Have you heard of Tom Petters? Look up his right hand women, Deanna Coleman, who served less than a year after spending 15 years helping Tom steal billions of dollars from people in a Ponzi Scheme. His other sidekick, Robert Dean White, spent years and years cutting and pasting false documents to scam people out of money and was given less than a 5 year sentence.

While I respect that you don't drink, do drugs and whatever else was included on your list of no no's, it's not up to you to tell other people what to do with their own lives and bodies. And furthermore, the majority of people who are drug addicts are either mentally ill and can't hold down a job and therefore have no insurance for treatment OR they suffered tremendously as children in abusive homes and became drug addicts to cope with feeling bad all the time. Sure there are other's who make bad choices and the drugs got the better of them. That's going to happen. I speak of this having spent quite a number of years in Social Services before it became too emotionally draining and had to make a career change for my own sanity!

Don't be so quick to judge.

But, regarding this article. Crooked jail guards should definitely get double time. Good idea. Kind of like speeding in a construction zone, the ticket is double. As far as the inmate who is in there on a murder conviction. That's a whole other story and I guess it's time to isolate him so he can't confer with other inmates and create more problems!

I worked in a drug center in California. Most of the druggies there were smart young people. Their only excuse for being addicts was because they were WEAK.

I watched as counselors kept track of all the names these druggies gave up. Hell, they'll give up ANYONE.

Glad you're no longer a drug counselor (not that I believe you ever were) because you don't have a clue. By the way, the vast majority of drug counselor's are prior addicts.

And you're wrong that no one is in prison just for smoking pot. While it's quite a low percentage, there are some. Furthermore, I never said a word about Pot.

I thought maybe I could get you to think on a higher level, apparently, I've wasted my time.

The people that are automatically criminalizing the guards probably haven't ever worked in a prison. Many of these officers become victims of threats by gang members. I am not condoning their actions but I know from first hand accounts that some have had their families lives threatened if they do not comply.

If someone in prison were to describe your house , wife and children to you and sad It'd be a shame if something happened to them'. How would you react? You don't know because you probably haven't experienced that.

                        Just a thought.

You can't cheat an honest man. you cannot threathen an honest cop. When a CO falls into the hands of the prisoners he is guarding, you can Universally find that the reason it got to that point is he allowed himself to fall under their influence by some stupid move onhis own part.

The only way they can find out about your family, kids, financial problems, freaky activities is because you gave them enough information to work with in the first place.

No one - cop or criminal, has any respect for a "crooked" cop. Personally - I would trust a crackhead over most cops. As long as you don't get between a crack head and his drugs, he (or she) can be trusted to do what they say - thats their motivation.

With cops, you never know what their "true" motive is. Today, you are their freind - to,orrow - you may be the pawn in a cgme they are playing.

Never forget - prisoners have nothing but time to pass. If it takes 5 years, 10 years to piece together your weaknesses, thats OK with them. Just because you see crooks do stupid stuff on those Cop shows - doesn't mean crooks are stupid.

CO's, PO's - cop, whatever - if you are the guy with the keys to their freedom or privledges they have all the time in the world to find out what floats your boat, they will watch you like a hungry dog waits for food to fall on the ground.

Sooner or later - something will fall in their lap.

Well there ya go folks, more of the same ole @!$%#, officers being bought off, and on and on. And those idiots who are so strong against drugs and support the win-less war on drugs. How can any war be won when there are spies or those working both sides of the law, and the system has been infiltrated. Where's common sense at folks. It's like an Arson Inspector who endorses arson and takes bribes to get the job done. Legalize, tax, stop the black market, and end the senseless killings by the drug cartels, oh I forgot that makes too much common sense. Too many hands in the cookie jar folks, make sense to anyone.

My neighbor and his family just went into hiding. It's because he was threatened by the cartels. They told him his boys would be kid-napped. He stood up to them. He did the right thing.

That's the way honest Americans are.

Just another government employee living off our taxes.

I dont want organized crime financed off of a massive blackmarket.

I dont want kids being sold drugs by illegal dealers. Put it in stores with an age limit.

The only liar is you, since you have told people you were a drug counsellor before. Claiming to know of all the damage drugs do, blah blah blah. Seems you have a different story everytime an article comes up.

A traveller was crossing the desert, a sand storm came up - causing him to wish he had shelter, but none could be found. He stumbled into an oasis where he saw a huge tent - with a man in fine robes sitting out in the swirling, bitting - blowing sand.

He goes up to the man and asks for shelter, just until the storm passes. Alas my friend - I would gladly offer you shelter, but all my camels are safe inside. At best all I can offer is what you see me doing ... a seat here in the sand.

How is this possible, asks the traveler? You seem to be a man of wealth and speak with the voice of one both reasonable and educated - how come you to a place where your animals are safe inside the tent, while you are suffering out in the storm?

I'll tell you this tale, it is long and difficult for me to explain, so bear with me.

It all started one cold night when one of my animals, a camel, stuck his nose under the flap of the tent, tthe wind was blowing, much like it is tonight and I took pity upon him...

                                      OK Freedom, here we go.

You say the laws will be gone in 10 yrs.. What do you know? You say it's the old folks-those over 50 that stand in the way. Well, those of us over 50 are the ones who used to be the hippies. The ORIGINAL users. We KNOW what they're about, and we know what they really do. If you don't, in fact, and haven't, done drugs, yer talking out yer ...!

People who are against drugs are NOT a minority.

A large portion of your violent offender and thieves are druggies, trying to secure their next score. They can't hold a job. So, this is how they get their monies for their "hobby"

And by the way, it IS my business when someone else's problem causes ME a problem! If someone takes drugs of whatever type, and gets crazy and does stupid crap like going across the street and into a guy's garage and murdering him with his own ax (actual happening-he was a student of SUNY-New Paltz in mid-70's) it's NOT legislating morals or stepping on someone's rights-it's PROTECTING THE PUBLIC!!!!

Amsterdam is changing their tune, too. Apparently there's trouble in paradise.

You say we've wasted billions. Well, we've SPENT billions. Maybe wisely, maybe not. But just how bad do you think things would be if we HAD NOT spent all that money?

I think you need to rethink your attitude. Your comments don't hold water, and amount to nothing more than a rant... all you talk about is YOUR tax dollars.

I pay tax dollars, too. So do the rest of us.

No one said anything about legalizing abusive behavior in public. People are allowed to drink. They are NOT allowed to drink in public or be drunk in public.. Nor are they allowed to go to their neighbors and steal or assault anyone.. See how that works? All without having to make booze illegal. Amazing...

Drug addicts who steal, do so because its expensive and they cant get work. Usually due to a criminal record. Society sets them up to steal again and again. And the expense of their habit only adds to it. How come we dont see the end of the world with people who drink? Even though its the most common addiction people have? Infact many people even manage to hold down jobs even theough they have drinking problems. Thats because society doesnt totally dump on them and make living impossible, and they dont make it too expensive to feed their habit on a regular paycheck..

Legalizing drugs has nothing to do with legalizing bad behavior towards other people. Or other criminal acts. Its about how we deal with the problem.

And protecting the public is exactly why we need to legalize and control drug use. Illegal dealers dont care who they sell too, and are infesting our schools. In fact the go out of their way to target kids. And they are putting who knows what in the drugs. Lacing pot with heroin to introduce it to kids, etc. They also push other drugs on kids when they go buy some pot. Dealers are a drugs store. Whens the last time the guy at the liqour store asked you if you want to try some free heroin? Telling you its something else.

The market is totally uncontrolled. Legalization = control. Legalization would also open things up for treatment rather then incarceration. People dont seek help because they afraid of being jailed. Afraid of the stigma. Afraid of not being able to work. Its goes on and on.

There is NOTHING logical about the way the problem is being dealt with. Thats why Academics have been calling for change for years.

Amsterdam changed its laws due to pressure from the U.S. and Germany. Threats of hassles at the border and trade embargos. It had nothing to do with legalization not working. In fact it worked well. Thats why the U.S. and Germany wanted it gone. Its ammunition for those against prohibition. Now Portugal has legalized some drugs.

The reality is, prohibition has been turned into a huge make-work program, funded entirely by taxpayers to the tune of 10 billion a year. (Make-work for the justice and legal system)

Please don't tell lies on here. Other druggies believe them.

Amsterdam NEVER legalized marijuana. They did decriminalize pot until it got completely out of hand. give a druggie an inch, he'll demand a mile.

                                      Portugal has NOT legalized drugs.

The first country to legalize drugs, will inherit the worlds druggies.

Switzerland has decriminalized marijuana. It's not exactly sliding out of the earth's orbit. And yes, Amsterdam's decision to tighten up their pot market was due to pressure from the US. It's now illegal for tourists to inhabit the coffeehouses.
What I'd like to know is, why is it that the same people who oppose government intervention to prevent things like obesity, cancer from smoking, guns getting into the wrong hands, skin cancer from tanning beds, etc etc etc get so self-righteous about imposing laws on pot? I understand we need to keep dangerous drugs like PCP and heroin off the streets. But Pot? Come on. When's the last time you heard about a guy beating up his wife because he smoked too much? There will always be abusers of almost anything you can think of. Watch Boardwalk Empire and you'll see how ridiculous it was trying to keep alcohol off the street.

And BTW Portugal has, in fact, decriminalized drugs. It's now an "administrative offense." It's had mixed results: decline of HIV, decline of drug-related deaths, decline in adolscent use, but a possible incline in use since the change in law became effective (although this might be due to users feeling safer about admitting use), decrease in street value of drugs overall. You can read about it on wikipedia: it's actually pretty interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_policy_of_Portugal

Sounds like you folks that want decriminalization of drugs should move to the above mentioned countries and leave this hellhole of a country that you live in now. When some whacked out a$$ comes to your house breaks in rapes or kills your daughter because they want to steal the silver out of the hutch for a fix, then tell me how you want all the opiates and pot legalized. One of the biggest drug problems being faced right now is legalized drugs, prescription drugs, Oxycontin can get a doctors order for it. People are being killed of a legal drug, now come on lets legalize it all.

When you deal with garbage, some of the stink my stick. But not as much as you intimate.

The only difference between an inmate and a correctional officer is their uniform. Stiffer laws for correctional officers who commit crimes within a prison should be a mandatory 25 years in prison.Their job title should be prison guard as they aren't correcting anybody's behavior.

YOU being just a cleaning lady is like saying the only difference between You and the PIGS you work for are the size of your FAT asses. how's that? And for Your information FATASS, their title was changed for political correctness by the Government. they didn't ask for it themselves.

It would be my guess You have to clean houses because your BETTER half is incarcerated and you've tried to smuggle in contraband in ONE of your FAT rolls and got caught by a CO.

                                                    You're disgusting.

I wonder how long it took the feds to ONLY realize the drugs are in Indiana Prisons running these drug rings? When every prison in the U.S is run by drug gangs and the Dept. of corruptions i say that every prison should be swept clean and the convicts do real time like they are suppose to and have NO access to any form of cummunications and forced to do hard labor everyday!! And if a corruptions ocifer is involved in anyway or form then he or she should be put in prison for life!

The federal prison system it seems is the one asleep. But what does one expect from a communistic fed.gov?

Clean house. Fire everyone right up to the head of the Department of Injustice. Anyone with oversight deserves the ax.
