Hotel thief's weapon of choice: hot coffee

Police say a man robbed a hotel a mile from the Pentagon with an unusual weapon: a hot cup of coffee.

The suspect entered the Best Western in Arlington, Va., on Tuesday night around 9:45 p.m., threw the coffee on the front desk attendant, and jumped the counter, stealing a cash drawer with about $450 and a cell phone in it, Arlington County police said. He then drove away.

Officers dispatched a K9 unit and a U.S. Park Police helicopter was called in to help search for the suspect, who fled in a white sedan, but he wasn't caught, police said.

The desk clerk's condition is unknown. A message left for the Best Western manager was not immediately returned on Thursday.

The suspect is described as a black male, 6 feet tall and 170 lbs. He was wearing a black hat, glasses, a black athletic jacket, white athletic shorts and white shoes during the robbery.

Arlington, located just across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., is home to numerous government institutions, including the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery.

    "He then drove away."

Gee, guess he's not one of those 'dumbest criminals' we often hear about.

Remember hearing about the guy that had a 'for sale' sign with a phone number showing in the back window of his van, after pulling off a robbery? What about the bank robber that had 'support hose' over his head and neck, then ended up blacking out from the pressure cutting off his blood supply ... he fainted inside the bank and was arrested?

One more ... when a thief couldn't get a cash register drawer to open and when the plug wouldn't come out of the socket he cut through the cord with a knife and got zapped?

He must have got that cup of coffee from McDonnell's I would say if you remember the case of Stella Liebeck who sued McDonnell's because she spilled a cup of their "too hot" coffee in her lap.

Coffee doesn't scald people...people scald people. But still, maybe we should ban coffee cups that hold more than 8oz of coffee.

Looks like congress will have a discussion on "Coffee Control" now. Anyone with a cup of coffee will have to register their cup of coffee or face penalities.

I'm a coffee drinker. I come from a coffee-drinking family. Some of my fondest memories revolve around drinking coffee. But I've seen what coffee can do, and at no time in my life, with all my coffee-drinking activities, did I ever feel the need for a high-volume coffee cup.

I'm all for coffee registration. We don't want to take your coffee away, we just want to know who has it.

I wonder...since Mickey D's was sued by a woman being scalded by a cup of coffee she bought and spilled on herself, will the attendant sue the coffee company too?

            Just sayin' ...

Morris Frost: I'll have a double decaf cappuccino.
Ted: Give me decaffeinated coffee ice cream.
Harris: I'll have a half double decaffeinated half-caf, with a twist of lemon.

Several years ago I worked at a night club. I would close the place down, prepare the tills and bank deposits and do the bookkeeping. I was the only one in the place at 3 or 4 in the morning.

I used to leave each night with a fresh hot cup of coffee. I usually carry a pistol but I would rather scald someone than shoot them.

I bet this Best Western will now get carried away and post signs No food or drinks at the Counter! Every Best Western in the Country Will start to Post these signs, then every Hotel will start infringing on our rights as tired lonely travels to bring our coffee to the desk at check in time. What next no food or drinks in restaurants or fast food stores. Stand up for your rights stop coffee crime before they put Starbucks out of business.
