Feds say anarchists expected to use violence to disrupt political conventions

Scott Iskowitz / AP

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, left, and convention CEO William Harris unveil the stage and podium for the 2012 Republican National Convention on Monday in Tampa, Fla.

A federal law enforcement bulletin "assesses with high confidence" that extremists from anti-government anarchist groups will try to use violence with the aim of disrupting both political conventions.

That assessment, it says, is based on what has happened at similar high-profile events.

The analysis, sent this week to local police organizations nationwide by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, says these groups "probably lack the capability to overcome the heightened security measures" around actual convention facilities but could target businesses or means of transportation nearby. Most of what these groups do, the bulletin says, involves vandalism, trespassing and attempts to block roads. But it says they're becoming more interested in trying to use explosives.

The Republican national convention is scheduled to run Monday through next Thursday in Tampa, Fla. The assessment says the FBI picked up information in mid-March indicating that some anarchists from New York were planning to go to Tampa in hopes of closing "all the Tampa Bay-area bridges" during the convention, although it doesn't say how they planned to do it.

Though the bulletin makes no mention of Tropical Storm Isaac, it says that "inclement weather and effective crowd control" could deter the actions of these groups.

Isaac was in the Caribbean Sea on Thursday and expected to pass south of Puerto Rico. Some computer models showed Isaac moving parallel to Florida's western coastline, passing Tampa on Monday.

I think they are referring to Hurricane Isaac, which may hit Florida Republian Convention. I guess they better go arrest it... It's a Democratic Party ploy.

Can't they just run on the field at ballgames, like other attention-whores?

Anarchists are very peaceful people. In fact back in 2005 they were the first responders to hurricane Katrina, 2nd was cuba. This was all before the American gov't. This report is nothing but fear mongering and lies. You can tell by the fact they stated "Most of what these groups do, the bulletin says, involves vandalism, trespassing and attempts to block roads. But it says they're becoming more interested in trying to use explosives." Where is this even coming from? you think a group of peaceful people who are protesting (which is their civil right to do) are all of a sudden going to change their ways and become violent? No, this is a complete and utter lie.

Actually 10,000+ americans from east to west coast, who are about to start "demonstrations" just before november, I would not call Anarchists. I would call them highly volitile american people who are rightly pissed off that they lost their homes to foreclosure, lost their jobs, and place the blame squarely on the politicians who have not gotten anything done to help make their lives better.

On that regard. I suppose if there was a million man march to the capital to burn down the white house, and the capital dome...I just might join in. But it would have to be a million man march. None of this couple thousand crap. I mean if your gonna go to Virginia, and stake a claim of how pissed off at the government you are, you might as well do it with an army. I highly doubt that "security" would @!$%# with a million marchers if they said, get out of the way, we want to have a few words with our duelly elected leaders.

I agree; I think the only way it's safe for us to protest is by the millions. They can't arrest or shoot all of us. I think it's time we did just that. Go show up at the white house and demand to have all of them get out and sit down and listen or be thrown out. I think this election we will see almost all incumbents voted out. No matter which party you are, you aren't doing your job and should be fired. I think we as a nation need to stand up and demand our leaders resignations.

The American people are fed up with government and they know it. If people go to these things to protest the government actions they will be labled a threat and jailed. The government is never going to allow us to rise up and demand change. They will simply have people arrested, just like they did in China and other socialist states. The constitution grants us the right to have a malita but go ahead and try that and they government will have you arrested as terrorist or people trying to over throw the government. someone needs to kick it over and dump all the worthless pieces of garbage in there out and start over. All they have to do is say you're trying to go against the government and you'll find your tail in prison just like those in Tienimen square. The government has taken control of everything. I hope Americans do protest about our economy, jobs, price of gas and everything else. I'd go if i could.

People are getting sick of government, period.. These movements are growing by leaps and bounds. People are getting even more sick of the fact that candidates have been using their office to force a personal Agenda up everyone's arse. Whether its a Zealot trying to force his religious morals on everyone, or a Zealot trying to stop all environmental damage of any kind, or using his office to line his pocket book, or the pocket book of rich supporters. The problem is, and the reason for these protests, is Government no longer works for everyone. No matter who is elected, it means someone gets screwed these days.

Too many Zealots in politics these days, trying to force their will on everyone. And WAY too much government in people lives, period. This kind of thing will only expand and expand until theres a meltdown of some kind. Something has to break.

Its not just on the Media, although I agree they aren't fair and balanced anymore, at all. As you say, its ALL about ratings and advertising dollars now. And no accountability.

But, Politics is also controlled by small very rich groups, with Agendas. And a honest hardworking person cant run, even if they wanted to. They wont get the nod from the parties, and they don't have the cash to compete against the big money and its smear campaigns.

There is only one way to change things, at the grass roots level. With the Public as a whole Nominating and supporting a bunch of nobody's, all the way to the WH, Senate, and House. But that means people need to get involved. Most people dont even vote, thats most of the problem right there.

As for the comment about swearing. I'm an ex-truck driver. That doesnt change the rules on this board, swearing can get you banned here. Click the exclamation mark, it lists all the things that can get you in trouble. And they do enforce the rules here. Ive seen dozens come and go.

There are way too many posted comments here that show a real bent for ignorance. Have we been invaded from space? Have the Ignaroids landed?

Eight of ten commenter’s that discuss anarchy don't indicate they even have a basic knowledge of what anarchy is, let alone confuse it with protesting. Anarchists will be at both conventions, without a doubt. They will be there to cause harm to people and/or property, regardless of the implications. Most will claim to be acting on a cause, but their full intent will be to cause damage or injury. The rest will be there either because they are too ignorant to know they are being used, or because they think it will "be cool".

Some of the OWS operatives that will be there will border on anarchy. Many are trained in legitimate protest techniques, others lack the control or don't understand what's happening and what the goals of OWS are, and will probably act out on their own which will likely cross the line into anarchy. Regrettably, too many of the OWS members haven't a clue of what is really happening to them. Those are the ones that think it's "cool" and/or are participating in a revival of the protests of the 60's. All I have to say to them is the 60's protests may on face value appear to be cool, but in reality they were a smelly STD riddled mess (I know because I was there). With the exception of a very few of the 60's protesters, the majority got jobs, started businesses, became the very people the OWS are protesting now. It's ironic what a bitch reality is. That leaves the legitimate protesters. They have an axe to grind and have grievances that should be addressed. They will be the ones that will be out there with their signs, staying on the sidewalk, not blocking bridges or closing down rapid transit. Sadly, they may be the very people that end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, getting blamed for causing trouble. Or the ones that get hurt for the crimes committed by others.

In closing I have to say to the commenter's that think committing crimes while protesting is an ok way to get your point across, well it's not. It's not your "right" to commit crimes. If your cause is a just one your numbers would grow without paying for their services, bribed with goods to be there, or being told to show up. If your numbers are large enough, the politicians will be forced to notice, and your fellow citizens may decide to join you.

It's past time to stop "playing nice" with these a$$holes. I hope the police make it a head cracking contest.

I think the public should treat the Police the same way the Police treat the Public. With a total lack of respect, and only concern themselves with their own safety. Make the slightest move I dont like, its beat down time.

Hmmm...... 20,000 Retaliban Party members swept away into the ocean by a 'terrorist' hurricane would be more likely and a hell of a great start to taking America back from a bunch of bullies who, when they aren't condoning murder of citizens, globally, are out to criminalize women, buying 400 billion bullets for the HLS 'citizen soldiers' for 'domestic use.' Abolishing the 4th Amendment with the NDAA Act. Proposing over 400 bills to reduce taxes on the rich, or reporting disinformation courtesy of International Criminal Rupert Murdoch and his network. Best of show is Akins; only a rapist would make comments like that, and Joe Walsh; deadbeat Dad, whoring on the taxpayer dime, coward, naysayer of his female opponent who could kick his a** anywhere anytime. Yep, these are the faces of the Retaliban and only a well placed hurricane could make a dent in that fascist mess. Heil Retaliban!!!

You've got your rant on pretty solidly, but you've got the party part wrong.

Barry has told us he wants a civilian police force equipped and equal to the military. All that ammo for DHS, Social Security Admin, Dept of Marine Fisheries - Is that all the one party? Anti-protest/No trespassing law was passed by both Dems and Reps (how is that for all of you who keeep whining about no compromise?).

The use of the word "anarchist" A person who seeks to overturn by violence all constituted forms and institutions of society and government. A person who promotes disorder or excites revolt against any established rule, law or custom. The use of this word was carefully crafted into the description of these "protesters" They are being identified even before the convention begins as a dangerous and lawless threat to our political process. I would advise all who intend to participate in this revolt to get their lives in order and prepare your loved ones for the worst. The use of massive government reaction will be something we have never seen against our own citizens. There will be loss of life and total chaos once the backlash begins.

There's nothing wrong with people who want to legitimately protest.. That's protected under the constitution.. If they want to get out there and act like a bunch of wild animals, that's NOT ok and it takes away everything that those who protest legitimately are trying to accomplish ! Polititions from the lowest rank to the highest need to hear the voice of the American people who want to know whats being done about education, price increases for petroleum products, immigration ( illegals ), and a host of other problems .. I for one am tired of polititians who could care less about what " We The People " want our country to be .. There has to be better than this and our elected officials could care less.. They are more interested about what they can do for themselves.. If I could march then I'd be there too, to do it the right way !!

This is the political climate created by the Obama administration. In their view it's the war on women, class war, war on religion just to name of few. President Obama has done more to divide this country than any other president than I can remember. It's "NAUSEATING" to watch.

Anarchists come from all political organizations and some have no political affiliation at all. Those of you who are directing your comments toward one particular political party are simply displaying ignorance and partisanship. You're part of the problem; you should try being part of the solution.

The U.S. will not be destroyed by outside forces. It will be destroyed from within. It's only a matter of time if the hatred, animosity and intolerance doesn't stop.

Actually we just had a similar situation here. No one in custody yet. Explosives were threatened but not carried out.

This is sick. No more violence. No more. Far right posing as far left, far left posing as far right, gun merchants making a profit. Absolutely disgusting. And a sign of the times.
