Subscribe to RSSNineteen people were wounded in at least seven shootings within eight hours overnight Thursday in Chicago, police said.
Eight of them, mostly teenagers, were struck in what's believed to have been a drive-by shooting around 9:15 p.m. Police were patrolling the area when they heard the gunfire at 79th Street and South Essex Avenue.
Two 14-year-old boys, a 15 year-old boy, two 16-year-old boys and a 19-year-old woman were taken to area hospitals in fair to serious condition. A 28-year-old male was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

An investigation led police to a nearby motel at 81st Street and Stony Island Avenue. A SWAT team was called as police thought the shooter was barricaded in a room. Nobody was inside, and no one was taken into custody.
Community activist Andrew Holmes said some of the victims aren't cooperating with police.
"The persons have been struck by gunfire, they need to step up and speak up for us," Holmes said. "Nine times out of 10, they knew who was firing the shot at them."
Holmes said a police camera at a nearby intersection caught a silver car leaving the scene.

There is a lot of peace in Chicago. It's just those specific ghettofied areas. Those people are so retarted. They work harder sticking up for their turff and their drugs then it would take for them to find a normal job and take care of their kids. They are worse than animals.

These "gangbangers" are nothing but home grown terrorists and should be treated exactly that way. Gangbanging needs to be made a federal crime with real federal penalties. Life in a federal supermax isn't like the state-run prisons. There are no weight rooms, no cable tv, no outside recreation or sports, very few visitations, censored correspondence, and best of all, no parole.
And the people in the areas these crimes are committed are just as bad as the criminals themselves. They sit on their front stoop whining that the police aren't solving the crimes when they themselves protect the criminals. The residents refuse to talk to authorities about what they saw and what they heard and wonder why this isn't being solved. The police aren't mind readers, and the residents who refuse to tell what they know are just stupid hypocrites. So until the community decides the death rate has gotten too high, the bangers can just go on with business as usual.

That pretty well sums up the majority of the violence, involving guns or any other types of force or weapons, that is not government sanctioned. At least probably 75% of the time, and probably more like 90% of the time, there are no real innocent victims involved. The people who are being injured and killed today are those who were doing the injuring and killing yesterday. Mostly it's various members of the criminal element knocking each other off, and being party to any of their kind of business increases the odds that one won't live to a ripe old age exponentially. Stay clear of that crowd in whatever city you're in, and the odds that you'll get caught up in something bad become startlingly remote.

You are, of course, correct. However, you don't go far enough because these street gangs have become a national problem with, as of yet, no solution, or at least no solution palatable enough for the politicians.
I see no way to address this gang and gangbanger problem except by passing laws to make simply being a gang member a felony. Also, crimes committed by any gangbangers would have significant additional time tacked onto their sentences.
BTW, that these Chicago shootings didn't produce any dead is attributable only to the lack of firearms expertise, not any restraint by the gangbangers.

Go back and see how many were killed and wounded in Chicago in the time since the Colo. shooting. The Colo. shooting won't even stand a candle to Chicago. Much of this violence is perpetrated by gangs. What needs to been done is to treat these so-called gangs as domestic terrorists and deal with them as we deal with foreign terrorists. Rapid deployment with lethal force. Once a few of them have been terminated with extreme prejudice, these low-lifes may choose a different approach to life. If not, eliminate them.

I have a better idea, relieve the economic hardship and the availability of welfare programs that support crime and create ghettos. Simple enough right? If a person has to find food to put on the table or a place to live they'll be too busy to shoot each other up in the streets. That is of course if another outlet is provided, like maybe jobs? Unfortunately if these gang bangers are caught, they end up with a 3 to 5 sentence and be out in months because our justice system is so screwed up that it allows violent repeat felons back on the streets. The rise in gangs and criminal activity is directly correspondent to the declines in economic opportunities and increase in government assistance. It is easier for these brutal idiots to steal a brother or sister's welfare check and sell drugs than it is to hold an honest job!
If they don't get their welfare checks they can't pay the rent to their slum lord Valerie Jarrett who owns mega slum properties in Chicgao along with George Soros.

ChicagoMike, There are a lot of really nice communities downstate that are growing and thriving inspite of the economy because they are trying very hard to be fiscally responsible. It's alot cheaper downstate for sure. Although, I haven't been able to buy gas for less than $3.87 a gallon lately. Best of luck to you.

We have gang problems here in Phoenix as well. It is usually the Hispanic gangs vs. Black gangs. The wars are usually over drugs and territory. But our problem in Phoenix pales to the one in Chicago.
Since the black community hasn't exhibited much concern regarding these Chicago murders, it's simply black on black homicide. They only get upset when a white devil (perhaps Hispanic) does it.
Roland Martin is the only national black spokesman, to speak out about these tragic shootings. Locally, a young black man was shot in the back, by another black teenager, for having the wrong color bandana in his back pocket. It's hardly received any news coverage, for no one was interested in a story of black on black crime. Even when it's children shooting childrfen.
It's going to get worse in Chicago and else where.

Chicago has the most prohibitive gun laws on the nation. BUT, ladies and gentlemen, laws only control the law-abiding citizens (by definition). Yes, Chicago has pretty tight gun laws, but as of a couple years ago, the complete handgun ban was lifted, so guns are legally much more accessible now.

I just returned from the "war zone!" This place is nothing but filthy and overtaken by savages. I grew up on the westside of Chicago and going back to my parents house I was totally shocked at how bad it has gotten. The neighborhood needs to be bulldozed and rebuilt! People do nothing but sit on porches, in vacant lots or walk up and down the street all day. It is a freaking jungle. Both houses on either side of my parents are now Section 8. One house which were single family homes have 12 people living in it and the other house has 17 *ucking people living in what was originally a 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath house. Folks who have no clue talk about ghetto life claim that all these people need is a chance. You folks are talking out of your *ss and haven't a clue. All those who can leave, leave and don't come back and anyone who wants to leave can do so. Those who are there most of them like that lifestyle and are content with sucking this country dry. I have nothing but contempt, disgust and disdain for these people!!!! Call me a sell out, call me what you will, but just because one is poor doesn't mean one has to be filthy, ignorant and violent. People are out of work or under-employed. People with jobs are working in excess of 50 hours per week just so they can prove they are relevant and keep their jobs. The fat cats from wall street to mortgage banks and real estate agents all made BILLIONS of dollars during the over-valued home explosion which was purely and simply "paper" based (numbers and figures on a piece of paper that did not reflect the real value of homes). And these people get to KEEP all the billions they ripped off from the American public and face 0% jail time. I am sure there are real estate agents out there now with more than 1 million in their bank accounts, as if their professions should garnish that high of a wage (seriously, they are not brain surgeons).

So tell me how does a person such as yourself place the blame for a shooting in Chit-cago on the housing scandel that liberal feel gooders wanted in place for the "Less Fortunate" and not throw up when you see yourself in the mirror? I am heartened to see that by your accounting these kids have parents working two jobs. My personal experience is one of a single parent (MOM) sitting on the porch waiting for an entitlement check because it was owed to them. I probably just grew up imagining things, it is good to know that I was wrong.

Sad, but true. The real problem lies within the black community itself. None of the social policies of the past 30+ years designed to help blacks have yielded much progress. Bill Cosby was right; Al and Jesse and their ilk don't want to acknowledge the truth....so no progress is made. They don't even want to ask the basic question: Why hasn't the black community made any real progress in the past 50 years? Just the same old cycle...never ends.
