Reports: Chicago shootings leave 9 dead, 28 wounded since Friday night

Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy speaks with WMAQ on how the city can help stem gun violence, following reports that 37 people have been shot in Chicago since Friday.

At least nine people were killed and 28 others wounded in a spate of shootings since Friday night in Chicago, according to local reports.

The most recent shooting death occurred on Sunday afternoon in the city's South Side, where a 19-year-old was shot from a passing vehicle, according to the Sun-Times Media Wire.  The man died in the hospital after the 2:50 p.m. (3:50 p.m. ET) shooting, the Sun-Times Media Wire reported.

At least 17 people were shot, one fatally, from 6 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday alone, according to the Chicago Tribune

That fatality was a 28-year-old man who was found at around 3 a.m. on Sunday inside a vehicle, police and the medical examiner’s office told NBCChicago.com and the Chicago Tribune.

A 17-year-old was also fatally shot by someone riding a mountain bike on Friday, according to NBCChicago.com.

One of the youngest to be shot since Friday was a 15-year-old girl who was hit in the chest while smoking marijuana on Friday evening, NBCChicago.com reported. Police said that shooting was not "intentional."

'We're basically treading water'
In the midst of the violence, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy defended his department's anti-violence strategy.

"We're not winning, we're not losing. We're basically treading water," McCarthy said on Saturday.  He said that in the month of August, "we had some trouble because some of these retaliatory shootings are happening quicker than we can stop them."

It appears it was a slow Chicago weekend.

Maybe the weather will cooperate better next weekend. Good luck.

This statement pizzle me?

I wonder whay is meant by this saying...it sounds like you are speaking in codes.

"It appears it was a slow weekend in chicago. Maybe the weather will cooperate better next weekend. Good luck."

This comment sure doesn't sounds anything concerning the "Topic" of the News.

It does sounds like it related to what happen in Chicago, but in a negative way concerning people who lost their lives since Friday.

It sounds to me, as if you are in agreement with the killings, or wishing there had been more...

You mention, 'Weather' didn't cooperate...

...better next weekend (Did you mean more next weekend?)...

You also said, 'Good luck' (what do you mean?) (Are you saying, good luck next time, hoping for more deaths?)

I also notice that your name reads: XDm9mm, which means "Gun" and you have the American Flag, attached AS A SYMBOL.

"Hate is a terrible sin" "All who hate surely don't know the outcome for hate"

All these killing are not Gang related, people are taking pleasure in killing other people because of hate.

All these drive by killings are people who have targeted people to kill, and its all based on hate crimes.

Please allow me to un-"pizzle" you... (ok.. I realize you just fat fingered it as the I and U are right next to each other.)

And to be quite honest, as long as it's gang banger street thug low life scumbags killing each other, I have no problem with it. It saves the taxpayer the time and expense of capture, trial and incarceration after the fact.

I DON'T wish for more, I actually wish they would learn civility and the sanctity of life, but I will not hold my breath waiting for that miracle to occur.

And XDm9mm doesn't mean "gun". It is the model of a particular firearm. And I have the flag and eagle as an avatar as I fervently support both, and I am not ashamed of letting others know that.

Also, I don't hate. I just have no sympathy for two legged animals that prey on other people.

This is fantastic As long as the FUD community is running things, we will have a "War on Guns" which doesn't make sense. The effort to demonize a tool instead of the persons misusing that tool will always be a failure. Let's have "Gunner Control." Of course, self control is needed, but that requires a set of moral standards that have been washed away with the Godless society. No rules ... no safety ... no peace.

Anyway, as long as people stick to political correctness and refuse to face reality (not the so-called reality of TV, BTW) we live the fantasy life of a no-action-is-condemned world of what is now called "the left." Oh, and be sure to disarm those who want laws enforced and demean them into being the "bad" guys. The Roman Republic fell (after hundreds of years) when politicians promised more and more to the masses than they actually had to give. We are simply repeating that dangerous process in 21st century America. (Are you listening Joe Biden? 21st Cenury!) Goodbye, America as we knew it, it was a good try, but greed has had its day and the next big thing will take over. Unhappily, it looks like it will be Islam. Kiss your head goodbye.

The obama drug cartel, the one that was chosen from Fast and Furious has been shipping dope to Chicago for the entire obama regime. Rahm is supposed to control the dope trade from the mayors seat. Hes probably doing a fair job since he isnt doing anything else with Chicago. Except leaving it to ruin but who really cares. The place is just as dead as Detroit. Just so happens. The head cartel boss is arrested and is in custody, guess where ....Chicago.

And please whatever you do DONT try to explain anything to lindabew3540 shes too stupid, another dem/lib/marxist/communist child left behind. Hmmmm!

Chicago is a war zone. As the violence and chaos escalates it's obvious more drastic measures are necessary.

When statistics show these staggering increases in homicides,,,

The Chicago Police Department is trying to deal with a 28-percent spike in the city's homicide total in 2012 compared to the same period last year.

,,,and Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy explains it this way,,,

"We're not winning, we're not losing. We're basically treading water,"

Call me skeptical but there seems to be a disconnect between reality and wishful thinking.

It's obvious that more experienced leadership is needed. I recommend we send the only person qualified to deal with this level of community discord.

Barrack Hussein Obama!

His experience is second to none in this category. He obviously is totally unqualified in his current role pretending to be President, so let’s unleash that community organizing ferocity he is legendary for. His leadership, combined with Rahm Emanuels exemplary record can only be seen as the dynamic duo.

Barrack Hussein can lead from behind and Rahm can push forward his economic policy of selectively choosing which chicken franchises should be allowed in Chicago.

For the record, Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation. No one has guns in Chicago, repeat no one has guns in Chicago except for the authorities.

Clearly this is a prime example of the success achieved with Chicago politics and overwhelming gun laws. A pristine city with no problems to speak of.

As a resident of Illinois, I find Chicago embarassing. It's both the seat of Illinois corruption, with it's associated moral decay, and the seat of violence. For all us downstaters, let's get together a petition to seperate northern Illinois into it's own state. I-80 could be the DMZ. Then we could rid ourselves of the financial and moral drain that is Chicago.

At some point in our distant future maybe one or two politicians might actually have the courage to start an honest public conversation about the financial and spiritual disasters that have followed the unrestrained levels of babies being born to teenage high school dropouts. Or...maybe we all should keep our mouths shut, grit our teeth and do what we keep being told to do...learn to appreciate the wonderful 'diversity' of America, no matter what it costs us and no matter how many die.

New Haven, Connecticut...2011...population of just over 100,000 and 34 murders in the inner city.

Divide that by ten...if a small town of 10,000 to 11,000 was having 3 to 4 people gunned down on Main Street every year, the residents would be at every public meeting screaming for something to be done about it.

This kind of body count is just the norm for Chicago, the only detail that changes is the number of wounded or dead. Since the residents of the affected area (south Chicago) don't seem to mind their children being slaughtered in the streets and demonstrate this by refusing to tell authorities of what they have seen or heard, they essentially are protecting the murderers. Maybe the answer is to block most access in and out of those neighborhoods with armed checkpoints and just let them fight it out in there. Sooner rather than later at the rate they are racking up their body count, they will run out of families to destroy and people to murder

Just another prime example of the "It's not their fault, They had a crumby childhood, We need to give them more so they will act out less" spineless, vote pandering, economic slavery style of Democratic governance. What needs to happen is a bunch of Humvee's going through these neighborhoods hosing these little angles down with M-2 machine guns. But hey, call me rash.

We not only have the home grown drug peddling, pimping, random shooting little darlings now, we have foreign gangs controlling sections of cities too. But, hey, "it's not their fault, there just misunderstood. Only the left can't see their meaning, those of us not brainwashed and with a little common sense see it pretty clearly.

So lefties, continue to coddle your criminals, hell, why not, it's your social programs that created the breeding ground for them to start with. Go ahead, make excuses and take peoples means of defending themselves from your creations, meanwhile a lot of good people in Chicago and elsewhere are dying. You should be so very proud.

Again, more nonsensical reactionary NRA logic. In terms of true prevention, Chicago's strict gun laws are do not control this type of violence because guns are easily obtainable elsewhere legally, anywhere illegally. Nor can anyone say with any authority that the violence would not be worse if there were no gun laws in Chicago; perhaps the incidents double or triple. Conversely there is no evidence to support the idea that if guns were not restricted and everyone had them, that anyone would be safer; that the incidents don't double or triple. Also, this type of enforcement of gun control is too localized and too much after the fact to effectively prevent the violence or help the victims. It hits the courts, not the streets, and the streets are the real battlefield that no one wants to address. In that sense, I have to agree with Xdm9mm.

Tony,

About 7 months ago a family from south Chicago moved into my neighborhood. A month later, after one of my neighbors had refused to take the 17 year old son to the store and buy beer for him, there was a driveby shooting on her house that very night. Coincidence? I have lived in my house for 16 years and we've never had any type of shooting here. Every neighbor came out and told the police what they saw and heard and the culprits were caught within 30 minutes. Care to speculate on who it turned out to be? You would be right. A few days later the family moved out yelling our neighborhood wasn't "friendly".

This just goes to show that keeping guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens with gun control laws does absolutely nothing to curtail gun violence. Like the saying goes, when you outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns. Criminals will get their hands on guns whether they are legal or not. Keeping law abiding citizens from owning guns only serves to prevent them from being able to protect themselves from the criminals.

To read some of these posters, you would have to believe these gangs were just formed under the Obama administration and all the killings are being done by illegal immigrants. It just goes to show just how ignorant these republican supporters are and just how blatantly they lie. This crap has been going on since even before the capone years. What needs to be done is these so called gang killings need to be classified as terrorist attacks on their communities and the gang names revealed and dealt with by the respective states National Guardsmen and just like we do with other terrorist organisations we hunt in other countries, go after all the members of the gang instead of just trying to get the name of the one. You ride in a car with four other people and they stop and commit a crime, you are just as guilty as those four and prosecuted just the same. That rule should apply to all members of a gang instead of just the one.

These gang members are not politically affiliated with either of the political parties period. They are terrorists pure and simple.

There is evidence to support guns in the hands of law abiding citizens reduces crime. Check the numbers for yourself. Concealed carry states have much lower street crime rates than Chicago, D.C., Detroit, NY, LA.

It seems criminals are less likely to do stupid stuff if the possibility of getting shot is a real threat to them. Criminals are cowards and love it when they are the only one with the guns.

I fail to see where being armed is going to do anything in these drive by situations. The majority of these people being killed wouldn't have time to draw and fire to begin with and for all you know, the majority of them could have already been armed themselves but did not draw for the shootout so are being classified as unarmed.

Because nature doesn't take care of them and like the disease they are, they grow and spread in numbers to bigger areas and other neighborhoods they call territories and in turn they spread to other kids they force to join or they simply kill them as a form of initiation for other 10 and 12 year olds into their gangs.

Worse yet the people who find their way to leadership promote the same failing concepts.

2) If you put me in, I will make certain you get something from these cheaters.

The people who don't care about the law (i.e. crooks and hoodlums) have guns, while the citizens are left unable to protect themselves. If you were a bad guy, would you rather be in Chicago where only your fellow bad guys have guns or Texas, where everybody has em?

Chicago is proof of the latent racism of liberal democrats. The projects were built to "keep the blacks in their place". The projects have been torn down, but the black ghetto remains. As long as they keep downtown and the lakefront safe for tourists and suburban commuters, no one really cares how many blacks kill each other.

The Chicago black out of wedlock birthrate is 84%. 50% of Chicago youths do not graduate high school. Unemployment in these parts of town exceeds 40%.

What did Obama accomplish when he was organizing in Chicago? Nothing.

And blacks foolishly keep voting democratic to keep the welfare checks rolling in.

It's funny. After all these decades of these gangs violent activites, they still aren't being addressed and they occur more and more in other states year after year. These gangs aren't politically motivated. They aren't fighting and killing to get at the next food stamp allotments or welfare checks. They are what prevents businesses from wanting to develop in those communities and keep people on the welfare train. They need to be recognized for what they are, terrorist organisations, and dealt with just the same way we deal with terrorist organisations in other countries we are fighting them in. The National Guards are in each state to protect their communities from all terrorists foreign and domestic. It is well past time to use them against the domestic terrorists. These rapidly growing gangs. No exceptions and use the courts to prosecute them as terrorists as well.

IS it Chicago ? Or is it the southside of Chicago ? Isn't most of this violence taking place in 5 or 6 police districts out of the 23. Aren't there some of these districts as peaceful as a farm village downstate ? So it's certain people and not everyone in Chicago doing this. 2.7 million in chicago. 35 per weekend is 1,800 per year. or .00067 of the population. It's horrible if kids selling candy at 10 PM on their front portch are victims. But if the gangs are killing each other off, maybe we should let em go for awhile.

The liberals aren't the ones who are stopping any jobs act., or keeping our leaders from creating any new jobs, it's the lazy ones who don't care about family or country they usualy have no political party or waste their time voting or working these people make all citizens of Chicago look bad , why don't you clean up your own mess !? You can create a ghetto or a neighborhood it's your home do with it as you please ..but don't whine when the thugs start shooting and you turn your head again ! Kuhao & Mo....

Where are Al & Jessie, you ask ??? Well, they learned a valuable lesson from none other that ol' Bill Cosby himself. Mr. Cosby went on a much needed tour a few years ago and desparately warned people that the out-of-the-stratosphere teenage birth rate and near lack of anything resembling a 'father' was having horrific consequences for the inner city and the nation as a whole. Mr. Cosby made a lot of enemies from within the black community for his efforts and his message was criticized as being "too harsh" to be taken to heart. And civil rights hustlers like Al & Jessie refused to touch Cosby's message with a ten-foot pole.

Also...Al & Jessie are likely busy gearing up for the next Travon Martin protests !!!

After reading all of the posts, not once did I read antigun folks blaming gun laws nor liberals blaming republicans. But on the other hand, neither did I read progun or republicans acknowledging the problem and offering a solution to the problem. Like JohnM said, these gangs are not politically motivated. They do not care about gun laws. They were not created by either party nor do they vote. They are gang terrorists and the majority of them do not just control neighborhoods, they actually grow and move leaders to other states and neighborhoods to take over and reign through terrorization activities as well. They target young children into their gangs to commit the most violent of the crimes realizing the kid and not the gang will be prosecuted if caught leaving little threat to their gangs.

These gangs need to be addressed by state authorities as well as homeland security as domestic terrorist organisations and dealt with by the use of our state militias. Clean the neighborhoods and businesses will once again want to move in and support these cities with jobs and the welfare needs will go down as well. A win - win all the way around.

When victims are to afraid to tell who their shooters are in fear of being shot again, there is a real domestic problem and it is not politically motivated.

PEOPLE, this is the culture of violence, racism, and self-hatred that America has created all over this country. When America DEVALUED the lives of people of color hundreds of years ago, it make s it easy for SOME whites to say, "Let them animals kill each other" with with no compassion for their fellow American Citizens. But when white children shoot up schools, theaters, their families we all come together and mourn.

The hate filled comments expressed on this thread towards NON-WHITE American citizens, to include OUR President, just proves how racially SICK we are as a Nation. There's been MASS MURDER in Chicago, and other big cities long before this President took office. But we don't care, because it's the BLACKS that are dying. But in reality, it"s America that is dying!! If this President to step in to help inner city plight, the racist's would say, WHY IS HE ONLY HELPING THE BLACK PEOPLE. When in fact WHITE presidents, have been helping white people for hundreds of years. We are truly a SICK Nation, when it come to race.

You are so right...if you added up the number of every peron shot or killed in all the cities of America and compared to the number of American soldiers shot or killed overseas, it's not even close.

And if that same number of soldiers were being shot or killed every weekend, there would be protests in the street on a daily basis.

    mack...

While the inner city murder rate has absolutely nothing to do with anything done by our current president, in my opinion he did fall short regarding the violence problem in the inner city that is purely a function of the out of control masses of fatherless children born to teenage high school dropouts...perpetuating a horrid cycle that grows worse by the day.

Mr. Obama would have been the first national politician to whom some would have listened to on this problem and yes....that is due to the function of his race. He basically has ignored a situation that I as a non-fan of his would say he may have had an impact on had he began an open and honest conversation years ago. He chose not to do so.

It would have not done any good had the "WHITE presidents" you hold scorn for had something to say. They would have been derided in the press and in the black community for daring to speak on these problems, just as Bill Cosby was whenhe tried.

It'd be like "How dare Mitt Romney open his yap and act like he knows anything about the problems wthin the inner city ??? Why doesn't he go back to his one-percenter fancy house with his fancy bank accounts and mind his own business ???"

Former President Bush also would have been ridiculed had he tried to say something. I seem to recall it being national news for about a week after the nitwit rapper Kanye West's quote "George Bush doesn't like black people" was all over every magazine, newspaper, and TV news show. Al & Jesse would have been royally offended had Mr. Bush even tiptoed near the topic.

President Obama would have at least had a shot at reaching the ears and minds of those who really need to listen to what he potentially would have had to say. To me, it is shame that he ignored the opportunity to startsomething that may have helped...or at least he could have given it a shot.

McCarthy is an idiot. "Anyone with an FOP card can go in and buy 10 9mm's walk out and give them to whomever they please" Moron, under Federal law that's a "straw buy" and good for 10 years in Club Fed. So chief, your what?, issuing FOP cards to criminals or are you trying to say everyone who has one will do this? As for the gun bought in 1972, I'm willing to bet it was reported stolen, but in usual cop shop fashion, you can't find the report. It's odd you knew when it was purchased and by whom but could not find the stolen property report. Could it be it was recovered by your department, taken home by one of your officers as a "throw down" and lost? Nah, police corruption never happens in Chi town. The Feds have it all wrong. Your kinda the pot calling the kettle black, aren't you?

Nicodemusi, What's a FOP card? You mean FOID, you don't even know what the hell you're talking about. The suburban gun shops around Chicago have taken a lot of heat for years. The problem is straw buyers, but that problem is caused more by ATF cut backs in staff. They need to make the law against convicted straw buyers that would include being accessory to the crime the gun was used in. The local shops won't sell a gun if 2 people come in and only 1 has a foid card. They are limited to how they can scrutinize but they do an over the top job. For instance the shops that reject buyers, send images of the potential straw buyers to the other shops from their security cam. So that they can be on the lookout for these people as well, plus all this info is foreworded to ATF. If say a woman comes in to purchase a hand gun for protection, she is questioned. If she says," she lives in Chicago" she has to return with a Chicago gun permit. If she cannot answer simple questions about the gun's operation she is refused the sale. A woman walking into a gun shop for protection sounds ligit but could be a potential straw buyer. Nicodemusi believe me we're both are on the same page, I do not want this situation to go on either. But, I blame the President in part for this situation on 2 counts. First, people have been purchasing firearms like never before since he took office. They believe that Obama is crazy enough to repeal the Second Amendment and the leftwing nutjobs are right behind him in Zombie fashion. Thus causing a mountain of paper work for the ATF to critique and these Straw Buyer SOB's fall through the cracks. Second, It's good enough for the President to tie up 100's of Chicago Policemen,Swat Teams at the ready,FBI and Secret Service people to secure his South Side home for a $40,000 a plate fundraiser, while stray bullets fly less than a mile from his God D&^m home! Richard J. Daley made his home in Bridgeport,a South Side Chicago area, safe! Extra police presense, cops walking beats, while any nieghborhood to the North ,East, West or South was unsafe to drive through let alone walk in. Obama's best friend is Mayor Emanuel, what the hell's he waiting for? Anyone that would allow that kind of violence in their nieghborhood with the ability to curb it should be ashamed of themselves! Community organizer my a$$! The first Lady is concerned about childrens nutrition while the mothers in Chicago are concerned that their kids heads are not blown off! Well as you Lib's say what can you expect from a 1%'ers, like the Obama family?

      #1.87 - Mon Aug 27, 2012 3:07 PM EDT

To solve the problem you need to figure out an incentive for the kids to stay in school, and to not join the gangs. Sending in the national guard or army isn't going to fix anything in the long run. The problem is that people in the lower income neighborhoods have more of an incentive to join a gang and/or get gov't assistance and not work than they do to finish school and get a job. By cutting off some of the gov't aid it would force them to find work, and if work isn't there to move to an area where there is work. People want to rely on the gov't instead of relying on themselves.

As for why victims don't identify the criminals, it's not too hard to figure out. If they rat people out they (or a family member or friend) will be the next fatality, and the criminals will figure out who rat them out.

There are now more gang members in Illinois per capita than any other state in America. Not once has the Chicago police ever tried getting rid of these gangs. Lawmakers have never made laws to make belonging to a gang illegal. What the hell are they waiting for?

Let's blame everything on a the guns that are legally owned.

"What do I think? I think there's nothing like vaudeville." Officer Malone (Sean Connery) to Eliott Ness (Kevin Cosner) after listening to a Chicago patrolman's report on all the Chicago police activities made in trying to "get Al Capone" in the movie, The Untouchables.

All these rants against the President and why isn't he doing anything are strange. What is going on in this south Chicago neighborhood isn't a national problem. What is Chicago's mayor doing about this? Making stupid statements then its on to business at as usual? If he's inept, what about Illinios' Governor? Haven't heard much about this from him. This is something IL should be dealing with on a state level. The govenor can call out the national guard (if he wants to), or bring in state police (if he wants to), or sit back and do nothing, which is what it seems he DOES want to. If the mayor isn't doing his job, remember that on city election day, and if the govenor is just an ornament to occupy the governor's mansion, remember that on election day too. The people of IL need to at least make an effort to stop the slaughter, its their city and their problem. But it seems the population of the state, the governor, and the mayor are doing the same thing the people in the neighborhood are doing, nothing.

Marty, You are right, this is a problem on the state level. You sound clearly an outsider meaning you do not live here. Maybe you should google the Presidents address ( Kenwood Ave,Hyde Park,Chicago) and then match it up with the address' of the killings from say ChicagoSunTimes.com or ChicagoTribune.com. Then you can see how close this violence is to the POTUS home. This was his community remember? He was a community organizer that sunk roots here and found and married his bride. What the f*** is he waiting for? A stray bullet tearing into one of his young daughters? This doesn't make any sense,Marty, all he's gotta do is get on Rahm Emanuels a$$. The nieghborhood is secure and property values go up, property taxes are increased, more $ for schools, police, people start living like human beings, etc. Or maybe that's the problem? Obama just don't get it.

"It's funny. After all these decades of these gangs violent activites, they still aren't being addressed and they occur more and more in other states year after year. These gangs aren't politically motivated..."

That's the problem: the absence of a political message means that they don't fit most accepted definitions of "terrorism" however much their actions are similar to terrorists. They still have to be treated as "criminal street gangs" (which is unfortunate). I'm a big advocate for hitting them with federal and state Joint Task Forces as well. Guess what monies are being cut from police budgets? If you answered "Gang Task Force", you are a winner. What we need is an energetic DA to start hitting punks with RICO violations and get the feds involved. They have money.

NOT metaphorically, we attacked the people that were harboring the people that attacked us. What it has morphed into is another issue.

Now, was there a need to immediately resort to name calling? A simple explanation that you have your head between your legs would have sufficed.

Not a bad idea!! We'd all have a better idea of who is an isn't a believer!!

The XD is my favorite carry. However, I do use the Ruger LC-9 every once in a while, or even as a backup.

The PSS-9mm is also nice, but I just got that and am still getting used to it.

Afghanistan is RICH in rare earths, minerals and gem stones, including gold and rubies. It is estimated that there is approximately 1 TRILLION dollars worth of lithium alone available. Rubies can be found literally laying on the ground when one walks into the hills and mountains. Gold is also abundant and easliy accessed.

Opium is a resurgent crop since we ousted the Taliban. THEY had the output tightly controlled as it was against their beliefs, but is was also their primary source of income, so it was farmed but under their control only. They would actually execute anyone caught farming it without their permission.

And how do you equate confusing someone with calling one names? Now THAT confuses me!

Amazing how NBC took this article off of the Front Page at 9:45 am. I guess either Rahm, BO, or the DNC did not like the comments as they were pretty critical of Chicago policy of "no one allowed guns..." however, how does 37 people get shot if only police and military are allowed guns in Chicago?

Yet NBC allows the threads for TS Isaac flounder under all of the political remarks saying the Republican Convention be damned from God with the storm!

@sam adams, we already have, it's called abortion. And you seem to want to sway the argument away from the fact that you silly liberals have been in "control" of Chicago for quite some time (as well as Washington D.C.), with some of the more stringent gun controls in the nation, and yet, both Chicago and D.C. have some of the highest murder rates in the country. Care to explain? Or are you going to farm this one out to the almighty bho, or maybe holder???

What you say is true. However, one must also consider what Obama told Sarah Brady about "working under the radar" which Sarah later retracted and claimed he never said that to her.

At the time, the "working under the radar" was apparently in reference to the UN Small Arms Trade Treaty, which if it HAD passed, would have required all signatories to create and enforce a registry of ALL small arms within the signatories country and such registry would be made available to any and all other signatories at their convenience.

There were obviously many other elements to the treaty, but like a certain Speaker of the House once noted; "We have to pass the bill to find out what's in it".

XDm - Well the media kept a good lid on that one, never heard about it.

Either way, I don't like the current options. Romney might as well wear a corporate sponsorship suit jacket if he gets elected, and I don't trust that the corporations value our 2nd amendment rights all that much. In fact I'd be willing to bet they want to see the public disarmed just as bad as all the other gun control (I should say) anti-gun nuts out there.

Btw, do you have a direct link to anything about the bit about Obama and Sarah Brady? Obama came through my hometown the last time he was campaigning, if he does it again (or Romney for that matter) I would love to be able to throw some tougher questions their way.

Actually, just found this on Politifact:
              http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/jun/14/national-rifle-association/barack-obama-coming-after-guns-under-radar-nra-say/

The actual quote from Sarah Brady (she is saying this is what the President said) is: "I just want you to know that we are working on it," Brady recalled the president telling them. "We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar."

Leaves a lot for interpretation there.... but I'll be sure to throw that question to the President if I get a chance.

I find it interesting how the comments have gone from people getting shot in Chicago to preferred sidearm carry to natural resources of Afghanistan. Of course, the non-controversial political banter is injected as well.

Chicago is an interesting example of gun control at work. Comparing Chicago to Detroit is interesting also. If law abiding citizens don't do something to take their cities back, or to prevent them from becoming cesspools of crime, then they can expect martial law-type situations to be on the horizon.

While I have trepidations about both, I DO feel a Romney/Ryan administration will be much less divisive than the Obama/Biden administration has been.

Obama is very adept at inserting veiled class/race warfare rhetoric into his speeches and actually gets rewarded for it.

I also feel that a Romney/Ryan administration will be much better for LEGAL firearms owners and hopefully will be better at reigning in the various entities in the Federal bureaucracy that are trying to stymie those rights.

Very hard to own a gun in Chicago, except for the people who don't pay attention to laws.

Too many low-lifes disregard the laws and Illinois then becomes law-less.

Hey, let's make it illegal to disregard the laws! Oh, we already did that.

Well, then let's pass some more gun laws. Even if it doesn't work we'll feel like we did something anyway.

Chicago is a prime example of why gun laws don't work. CRIMINALS DON'T OBEY LAWS!!!

Gun laws only disarm law abiding people.

Maybe some day the left will pull their heads out of their a$$es long enough to figure that out. I mean afterall, it only takes rational common sense. But anyone that doesn't have enough sense already to keep their head outta their a$$ I would think, doesn't have the capacity to harbor common sense in the first place. All in all, the gun laws really doesn't have anything to do with eliminating crime in the first place, they are basically nothing more than part of the tactics that the left is using to try and destroy this nation so that they can usher in their much coveted and longed for one world totalitarian gubmint.

So maybe you should focus on educating your population, rather than telling them what firearms they can/can not have.

If the students in our schools and those that teach them always "read things twice" we'd be far better off, but instead we've reached a point where very many in America cannot even read things once.

While building schools is a very laudable endeavor, and it IS a valued cornerstone of this country, one must ATTEND school to learn the lessons taught. I'm sure there are schools available in the area these things are happening. Unfortunately, it has not accomplished much now has it?

When you consider capital investment, debt service and retirement and health benefits, Chicago spends $16,000 per year per public school student. They are sending kids to unsafe schools where they don't learn. The public schools system is a monopoly and they never produce a good product at a reasonable cost. It will never improve until we have school choice.

I don't think Steve is necessarily racist. I feel that animals that prey on others, ARE things, ARE sub-human, whether black, brown, white or green. For example, the WHITE person that went on the rampage in Colorado.

Yeah, he didn't. Wake up, people like YOU are the biggest racist of them all...and for the record, I reported YOU. Sadly, you probably wont 'enjoy the impending ban', but then again, neither will Steve...

So (MS)NBC... the numbers are not sufficient in a single event to titillate and invigorate your anti-gun agenda base, so now you "bundle" a number of events to garner the attention you desire.

NBC, you are NOT a "news" organization any longer. You are nothing more than a purveyor of special interest ideology, half truths and in several cases manufactured "news", edited to suit your particular agenda. You will twist and torture any bit of "information" in your attempt to demonize others that do not believe in exactly what YOU want them to think and believe.

I recently read an article that referred to the type of news we are showered with every day from multiple sources, including NBC, as "Yellow Journalism". It was used to great effect to get us into the Spanish American war and it's been misleading and misinforming ever since (and probably before). Anyone foolish enough the believe anything offered up by the major media these days is naive indeed. Although this article isn't screaming gun control, it promotes concern that something needs to be done and that naturally leads gun control advocates to action. I'm surprised that action isn't reflected in these comments - yet.

You can get to these news articles from the MSN news (Microsoft's home page). Also the TV news channel is called MSNBC. MSN is Microsoft. Maybe you should do some research before you state points of logic that have no basis in reality Flame.

Yeah, 37 shot in one city in one weekend isn't news worthy? You can't solve your problems until you are aware of them and can discuss them rationally. For that reason alone, this is worth talking about. Whether the terrifying notion of gun control is the answer or not, something should be done. I recommend building more schools. Eventually, you will need less jails. We should invest in our youth instead of Baghdad's architecture and infrastructure. Anyone agree?

@XD, exactly brother! They only report what suits their ideology. In the meantime people, ask your congressman why Homeland Security has put in a purchase order for more hollow point handgun ammo than was used in all small arms in 6 1/2 yrs in Iraq! That's not including their bulk requisition of rifle and shotgun ammo. Why all of a sudden is our civilian agencies going heavily armed, while trying to restrict our rights?

@ Upset - I believe the point is that 37 shootings in one weekend in CHICAGO isn't newsworthy. I'd love to see statistics for the rest of the year in Chicago, along with the previous five years for comparison. Seems like that's something a true JOURNALIST would have looked into....

You people are blogging and congrats each others for killing people?

And it easy to get a GUN there?

So, in other words...you just might be the ones who just killed NINE(9) people and injured others in drive by shootings?

Thanks for the information on killing people, and bragging about it.

Some justify ignoring it because it is perceived to be a poor person's problem, as if the victims have chosen their fate. We, as a people, should find a long term solution to this unique American problem.

Unique American problem? Really? Poverty and ignorance is American? Wow, wonder if the people in the slums of Brazil know this? The solutions to problems are to first get those involved to admit they have a problem. Then get them to understand they need to work on the solutions, rather than wait for somebody else to solve their problems. And since this appears once again to be Black on Black crime, it is time for the leaders of the Black community to get off their asses and provide "leadership".

When the poor, disaffected people of Chicago start cooperating with law enforcement to get the scum out of their neighborhoods I will understand being upset. Chicago has proven many times over that passing laws and throwing money at the issue doesn't help. It starts at the street level by admitting there is a problem and doing something about it.DO NOT expect the middle class taxpayer to give more and more-we don't have any more to give and when we see what happens when our tax dollars are wasted our hearts are hardened.

If it was a lollipop, she probably still would have gotten shot, but it wouldn't point to a bigger social problem. I know teenagers smoke pot, but it is pretty brazen to do it on the street corner without fear of being caught. Know what would happen in my city if someone saw a teenager smoking pot on the street corner? The cops would get called. What does that say about the goings on in Chi-town? What does it say about the residents in these areas that cannot be depended upon to help clean up their own communities? Nobody cared that a teenager was smoking pot on the street corner until she got shot - that is wrong!

If the gangbangers thought that when they walked into a street and started shooting there would be several good citizens drawing down on them with 12 guage magnums loaded with buckshot even the most stupid would reconsider their actions. A little bit of history for you. In the Coffeyville Bank robbery where the Dalton gang was shot to pieces it wasn't lawmen who did the shooting. It was the citizens of Coffeyville and their privately owned firearms that stopped them. 20 years later, Emmett Dalton, after being released from prison said that if they had known that the citizens would stand and fight and not run away they would never have tried to rob the bank.

Sure, because a bunch of nutbags with guns is helpful in any situation. Cops can't shoot....hell, most people in the military can't shoot very well. Unless we've got a bunch of cool-as-cucumber sharpshooters, more guns isn't going to help anything.

In many cases more innocents are injured by stray bullets from police than from an actual attacker. The vast majority of American citizens are barely intelligent enough to not suffocate themselves with a plastic bag, let alone be able to SAFELY handle and carry a gun.

I just don't have enough faith in the general public to support more relaxed gun legislation; otoh, I can't support stricter gun laws either when moron CO's and the like are granted pistol permits solely on the basis of an occupation in which any jackass can get a job...

The people who imply they work harder or smarter than others do not see their advantages only other peoples plights as their own fault. The industrial uprisings in the beginning of the 20th century caused a lot of death. Do you know why? People join groups for recognition of themselves as counting. I have no such delusions as I think I know the secret of life. However I will give my life, liberty, and support to my fellow Americans.

But it would be racist to do anything to the nigs that might reduce crime. And it's mostly darker skinned animals that make up the gangs. Gotta treat them with white kid gloves you know so one won't be branded a hateful racist.

And speaking of "collateral damage" ... that is 28 more people being treated in hospitals to make all our healthcare premiums go up further. That is unless they all had their own healthcare policies and something tells me they do not.

Gun control sure seems to be doing a heck of a job in a place (Cook County) where someone who is not a police officer or a member of the military cannot own a handgun.

While Chicago does have some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, it is not illegal to own a handgun. That would violate the 2nd amendment. See McDonald v. City of Chicago circa 2010.

I bet ya if a white or hispanic was involved, you two would be all over this.

Well, this will give you pratice to preach your sermons about voilence, and you would have a large crowd, non paying crowd, but still a large crowd to preach to. What's say preachers, you man enough?

and it's funny how when a guy like George Zimmerman uses a gun to avoid getting beat to death - some people call him a p*ssy

Rham, one of the problems when the left want to destroy America and learned from an inept leadership of our failed leadership in DC. Eric Holder, who probably helped get the guns to the thugs in Chicago and Mexico. Way to go odumbo.

Funny that Il is one of the states that will not honor other states gun permits and they have the highest murder rate in the U.S. Let the gangs kill each other that way you will get your gun control they will one day only have one with a gun. Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Glad I read your comment Charles... I was about to say the same thing. Not only does the state of Illinois not honor other states permits, but they are the only state that has not passed a law allowing its own citizens to apply for, receive a permit for, and carry a weapon. Yayyy gun control. More proof that keeping a weapon out of a law abiding citizens hands is no way to stop crimes involving lethal force.

ALL THIS AN'T Blacks shooting Blacks. This is what some is trying to picture.

These are drive-by shootings. and some just might be Police shootings as well.

We have people minding theie own business, walking home, sitting on porches, and even children playing and getting killed by people that haven't got caught, and the police sure an't looking for them.

So this carrying on tells me, it an't all no Gang shooting as the News Media trying to put it.

There's something else behind all these killings. Some might be gang related, but all are not gang related.

Hard to look for the shooters when eyewitnesses are not cooperating with the police. You can bet if these shootings were being perpetrated by outsiders, the eyewitnesses would be pointing their fingers at them and anyone that looked like them.

Linda, you need to go back to lala land like Boulder or some place like that. You really don't have a clue when it comes to life in the inner city. I was born and raised in Chicago, and those areas that all these killings have taken place are in the Black Ghetto, and I do mean ghetto. These are the area's that you don't even want to go into if it is broad daylight outside.

I say do what the old man did when the riots happened after MLK was assassinated. Declare Marshall Law and get the national guard involved. It won't be the 1st time to have tanks and half tracks rolling down the streets in Chicago. Don't tell me that it didn't happen, because it did. That was a fun year, 1968 to be living in Chicago.

Guns don't kill - people do.

Hammers don't drive hails - people do.

Now that we have on of these mass-shooting "incidents" pretty much every week, don't you think it it is time to DO something about firearms on the street? Do we REALLY want a society where everyone has an AK-47 slung across their backs wherever they go, just to feel safe?

This what happens when you have the liberal idiots in Chicago that coddle and want to play nice with everyone by electing a Mayor and Police Chief who are out of touch with the real world, but sure would like to see socialism take over. Guns are never the issue and never have been. It is people that are the problem that do not work, have welfare and everything else handed to them and we all know who they are. Other cities have cleaned things up, but since these two goof balls came to Chicago power, we see what happens and of course their answer is play nice and enact more guns laws. Glad I do not live in the city limits.

In Chicago? Bastian of the libiot mentality? Spawning ground of the nic? With a mayor like rahm? I just cannot believe it!

I wonder why (ms)nbc couldn't be bothered to report the races of all these "law-abiding" criminals. Was it because they were just nigs being nigs? Probably!
