Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, the Roman Catholic archbishop-elect of San Francisco, issued an apology after he was arrested at a DUI checkpoint in San Diego, Calif. KNTV's Cheryl Hurd reports.
Updated at 11:05 p.m. ET: Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, San Francisco's Roman Catholic archbishop-elect who was arrested early Monday for driving under the influence in San Diego, apologized, saying he felt "shame for the disgrace I have brought upon the church and myself."
Cordileone, who last month was named the next archbishop of San Francisco, was arrested early Saturday morning, according to police. Authorities stopped him at a checkpoint near the San Diego State University campus, the AP reported.
Cordileone, a San Diego native, was released on $2,500 bail about 11 hours after his release, a San Diego detective told Reuters. He had been booked on a misdemeanor DUI charge after he was stopped at a police checkpoint and failed a field sobriety test.
In his apology, released as a statement by his diocese, Cordileone said: "I will repay my debt to society, and I ask forgiveness from my family and my friends and co-workers at the Diocese of Oakland and the Archdiocese of San Francisco. I pray that God, in His inscrutable wisdom, will bring some good out of this."
Cordileone, 56, is currently the bishop in the Diocese of Oakland, Calif. Previously, Cordileone was an auxiliary bishop in San Diego, the AP reported.
He is expected to take over San Francisco's top spot when the current archbishop, 76-year-old George H. Niederauer, retires in October. Cordileone must make a court appearance on Oct. 9, the AP reported.
Michael Ritty, a private practice canon lawyer in upstate New York, told the AP that since Catholic bishops are accountable to the pope, potential discipline would have to come from the Vatican.
"If there was anything, it would be handled in Rome, most likely by the Congregation for Bishops. Depending on the question or type of criminal charge, it might go directly to the Pope or as directly as you can get," Ritty said.
Cordileone is known for being a strong, public opponent of same-sex marriage, and he is expected to govern 432,000 Catholics under his new post in the largely gay-friendly Bay Area. He'll also oversee the bishops in Honolulu, Las Vegas, Oakland, Reno, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Santa Rosa and Stockton, according to the AP.
The Archdiocese of San Francisco office declined to comment.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Good. Throw his ass in jail.
Jail time for a first offense DUI is extremely unlikely. The odds are he will get hit with a fine and probation and will probably be forced to attend substance abuse classes. He may even get what is called a PBJ (probation before judgment) where he takes the substance abuse classes and keeps his nose clean for two years and the whole thing goes away. Unless his BAC was way over the limit (.15+) it is highly unlikely he will do any jail time and he may not even have his license suspended. These relatively light punishments for first offenses is part of the reason their are so many second offenses. Some people just do not realize how lucky they got and learn their lesson, they just continue with the behavior that got them in trouble to start with.
CA has very strict alcohol limits - .08% This is roughly 3 drinks in about hour & half. So cocktail and couple glasses of wine and you are considered over the limit. Religious are not sworn to abstain.
The guys bringing up "little boys" give me the creeps. Just because he is a priest; I suspect this will be a humbling experience as it should for all.
The wine is for the parishoners sir.
Speaking of Gawd:
Why doesn’t Jesus make an Appearance at Half Time of da Super Bowl? Wouldn’t that answer a lot of Questions and make a lot of Ministers, Priest’ etc. real Nervous.
Based on the "Vatican" Actions, it’s ok to be a “Pedophile” as long as you are Raping little boys. However being Gay is a Sin, Unacceptable and will not be Tolerated!
Why does da Pope surround himself with Armed Body Guards? Doesn’t he have Faith in Gawd?
Remember Folks….Da more you Donate Da more your Prayers are Answered.
Why do People become Really Religious when they get Really Old or go to Prison?
Why doesn't these Republican TeaBilly Conservative Religious Freaks demand to see a Birth Certificate for Gawd?
The Biggest Threat to all Religions…………………..Da Truth!
The church already keeps a cast of shady characters in their stable of role models and leaders.
What's next? Serial killer, perhaps?
The biggest threat to communication........................illiteracy (or a good simulacrum thereof).
And just what was he cruising for in the wee hours of Saturday morning...hookers?
There goes my plan of driving by the local college campus on Friday nights.
I disagree. The biggest threat to religion is established religion.
There's nothing wrong with religion. It's what keeps you going, the faith that there's something biger than you, and you can live your life while trusting to Someone Out There to take care of all the things you personally can't but that affect you anyway. Whatever gets you up out of bed every morning, ready to face the day, is a good thing.
Established religion is like established anything else. It's easy. It offers answers you can get prepackaged, off the shelf, same for everyone, no hard thinking required. When a religion gets 'established', or so mired in bureaucracy that compassion takes second place to the law (see the current fracas with the nuns) and that law is written in stone and has no room in it for exceptions, it's no longer a religion for humans, it's a religion for paper-pushers and marble statues. That's when it's time to look outside of the dogma and prepackaged answers and move off to find your own. Christianity did that with Judaism--it split. And so did the Greek Orthodoxy, the Church of England, even the Quakers. It's happened numerous times throughout history, and I'm seeing it start to happen again within Christianity. And there's nothing wrong with that.
Just think of all the fun he will have in jail.
@jst;
Not true at all. Jesus did not hang out with the rich, and the days of the rhinestone wearing, mercedes driving preacher are pretty much numbered. You are to tithe 10% if you can,if not it is fine, you give what you can to help others not make people rich. Christian foundations fund and feed many the worlds starving, and get meds to the middle of the jungle to the sick. What have you done for your fellowman lately sir?
Your main motivation for coming to God,can not soley be just to save your soul,it does not work that way. People think of their mortality more in these situations which would be the main motivator to come to God. God knows your true heart,as you grow older you grow more wiser, when you go to prison you think about changing your ways, so redemtion, and mortality are the two main reasons. Do you have a problem with this sir? If so what is it?
Look here "jerry"lol, you sound very biased and bitter, why do you worry over others religous ways so much? To answer your question though, if you believe, you do not demand anything of your creator,it is the other way around
What truth is that sir?
Personally I am non denominational, I am not into organized religion either. That being said, you must realize that religion for many is what sees them through, who are you to judge that? Your cynniscism is only welcomed by atheistS sir.
All of you are disgusting ... NBC, run by gays for gays will do anything to try to rip part anyone that will dare oppose letting gays do everything they want and have taxpayers pay for it, no matter who it hurts. ... Even my gay Barber thinks NBC is NUTS and way too gay for gays ... that they only promote the worst v. normal nice gay people (and we all know and like someone who is gay) ... but even gays are disgusted with Chers twit child chaz/chastity, talentless fat boobless penisless male hormone injected pych case (But ABC and NBC want to shove that fat, talentless, UGLY pig up our nose).
The sad state is that the nice gays (and most are polite, kind, and talented) are being grouped with the drugged out, must get their way or throw a temper tantrum, dont know how they want to look or parts they want insane, drugged out psych cases , a few come to mind: ... (Lindsay Lohan, Chaz Bono, Perez Hilton, Rosie O'Donnell, Closet Case Clooney, etc) ...and Straight people have these kooks too ... a few: (Shrub Bush, Obama, Al Sharpton, Wyonna Judd, Rush Limbaugh, Barbara WaWa Walters, Kirstie Alley, Roseanne Barr, Tom Cruise (straight or gay ... who cares even crazy Boy George wouldnt f him and the women .. Tommy, youre just not wanted), any Kardashian, Kayne West, etc) ... Gays, instead of calling it Marriage call it Domestic Partners with all Benefits but said name ... Marriage WHY?... I thought you were creative and smart and not bunch of silly temper tantrum 2 year olds ... and like Elizabeth Taylor at the end .... she said .. "why anyone would get married is beyond me"
I am not a Catholic, but folks people drink and stupid ones drive ... fine him .. if he does it again, jail him but for now a fine (what CA requires) and to quote the Beatles "LET IT BE, LET IT BE, LET IT BE, LET IT BE" ... true words of wisdom for all of us.
Another fine example of the Priesthood.
hd:
Hmmm. You're thinking seems a little skewed. "Letting gays do everything they want" is like saying "letting blacks or whites do everything they want". You have a problem with that?
And the only ones "taxpayers pay for it" are religions who claim tax exemption, thus placing a burden on everyone else.
Don't put him in jail, that's what he's hoping will be his punishment.Make the Good Rev.do community service, picking up litter and cleaning community parks, while sing the rosary.......
Should be jail time and community service. A man of the cloth should lead by example or be made an example of.
jessie:
That .08 limit is national, not just CA. You can thank Ronnie Reagan for that.
Chris82mil:
In addition to jail and community service, the church should be made to make a large donation to MADD or some other group advocating against drunk driving. Parting with their precious dollars is far more painful than any other punishment which could be meted out against the church.
jstdafacts @ 1.4, here's da truth dude. You da dumbest dude ever.
Check the SACRED WINE inventory now!
JS, there is no "probation before judgement" for DUI in California.
hd-3717790 - lay off the lead paint chips. I think they're starting to affect your brain.
The church must be supplying him with a better grade of communion wine than the turpentine that we parishioners got in the 70s and 80s.
OOPS! I was driving drunk. But that's ok -- jesus forgives me...
OOPS! I raped a 9-year-old. But that's ok -- jesus forgives me...
christianity. what a phony goddam cult!
After the media firestorm of this is forgotten about, his DUI record will mysteriously disappear. I guarantee you!
I am not a fan of the RC church. My wife, from a Catholic family, was raped by a priest, who was traded around. She was all of 12 at the time, and I think I still deal with that experience in our love life, after 41 years of marriage, including one son.
But, I fail to see any man or woman failing an arbitary California spot field test riising to moral turpitude.
First, all the folks quoting % blood alcohol, this was a field test, not a breath or blood test. Go HOME.
Second, this is a mistake in judgement, not morality. He may have had one too many drinks, but he is NOT accused of raping 9 (or 12) boys (or girls). Get over your self-righteous selves, or join Westboro Baptist Church. Before someone finally hits them with a flame-thrower. --- PLEASE NOTE: I do not advocate incinerating these folks (It would only somehow sanctify them to some.), but I only present this as an eventually predictable end
I think he should be executed by the government as should all religious people. Thats the problem with this country we let people get away with all kinds of thinking and it leads to drinking. Execute, execute, execute!!! I'm with Obama, lets kill em all!!!
What is it with all the priest haters, they are people just like us. Maybe a few pedophiles among them but Jesus Christ I live in a tiny town of 400 and there are 11 registered sex offenders within 2 blocks of me. Just because a few are bad doesnt mean they all are, just like anyone else, and as for drinking, its hard for me to find employees that can drive cause there are so many DUIs. so everyone just shut the fk up.
No they're not like us. This guy, a criminal, is a homophobe and was chosen exactly for the reason he's been told to force the govt to persecute gays, just like the thug Dolan is doing in NY.
It's "don't do as I do, do as I say!"
Actually Regan raised the drinking age to 21 in 1984, Clinton created the .08 rule in 2000. It wasn't a law just an enticement for states not to lose 2% of their highway funds.
Funny how that worked ok but when Obama tried to do something similar with AHA and the states medicaid system the Supreme Court struck it down. Moral is you can't be poor and have health care and you can't drive at .08, they both were created with the same legal basis but opposite rulings.
"OOPS! I was driving drunk. But that's ok -- jesus forgives me...
OOPS! I raped a 9-year-old. But that's ok -- jesus forgives me...
christianity. what a phony goddam cult!"
If you commit a sin expecting to be forgiven, then that would defeat the purpose of forgiveness. What you describe is dumbasses being what they are. The funny thing is dumbasses exist everywhere but you blame the religion that doesn't even represent your criticism
Bill Marvell,
Your comment was the one of reason and sensibility to both religious and lawful people in my opinion.
I don't hate priests, but I DO hate drunk drivers.
No Tom, they are not people just like us. That's why "people like us" have such a problem with them.
They are protected and treated above the law as one step below god himself, while receiving tax exemptions "people like us" could never begin to receive.
At least he's not being arrested for molesting small boys--this time!
It's jokes like this that led him to the bottle. A man's gotta cut loose somehow...
Oh, by the way, how do you separate a priest from an alter boy?
With a crowbar.
So gays getting married bad, but drinking and driving good?
I hope he enjoyed getting arrested.
Anything that is not morally and spiritually is wrong. What one must do is search one's heart. God places what is right(His stautes/laws) in one's heart and it's up to the individual to seek. Those who ask for forgiveness, and is truly sincere, God will forgive. But remember God rules the heart, the devil rules the body! For the flesh is weak. He knows if one is truly sincere or is sprouting out words to satisfy him or others. Confuse? Ask for the gift of Wisdom, understanding, and disconcernment.
He will pray and GOD will forgive him! That's the way it works!
Unless you are gay, a woman, or not donating to your local cult of choice? Established religion is such a disgusting joke.
Really? can you prove any of that? can you prove your cult god exists?
Nope -- i didn't think so...
Really? can you prove any of that?
I don't find the lack of proof offensive, I find the presumption of their beliefs being true for everyone else offensive.
bicfi.
Can we have your name and city, please? We only want to smear you with any charge we choose, like child abuser, pedophile, sexual deviant. And do that for decades.... Does one-time or occasional drunk sound better now?
"Really? can you prove any of that? can you prove your cult god exists?"
Wait. So faith doesn't exist? I'd rather assume there is a god who loves then the alternative. If the "how" were complete and we find it is truly impossible for God to exist... somehow... only then I will put my faith aside because that is my choice. If there really is, ultimately, no point to anything then there's just as much reason to believe as there is not to.
Why would you think that there is no point to anything if it were proven that god could not exist? There is every reason to live and be good and help the less fortunate with or without a god. So you only have faith because you are afraid that you won't be rewarded after you die? Grow up.
Without a doubt Catholics online will defend him. I visit those forums from time to time to keep up on their lunacy. They defend child predators and still donate money to them, why not public endangerment via a DUI? Seems like small potatoes.
He'll probably be named the patron saint of Patron tequila in 200 years.
Really ? I dont see ONE post defending him here.
Sounds to me like you have an agenda, Ju' know ?
The SF Dioceses is defending him. Virginia from there just got through telling me that me having a problem with him being a homophobic hypocritical bigot is "MY PROBLEM TO GET OVER".
When I insisted on speaking with her supervisor for her rudeness, she transferred me to a janitor who at first tried to pass himself off as the Communications Director.
SO - they are willing to BEAR FALSE WITNESS, lie, judge and a host of other sins to protect this DRUNKEN JACKASS.
Nice, huh?
Samuel Adams - Are you Catholic? If not, why are you calling the SF Dioceses? This person is a man, not God, and thus makes mistakes, like ALL OF US. He will be punished in full accordance with the law. Not everyone agrees with same sex marriage, that does not make them all hipocritical bigots. I'd say you are the one filled with hate anyways.
Just wait. This drunken christian homophobe will say his arrest will be some form of "religious persecution" and a "denial of his religious liberty." The christians in America always love to play the victim card when they are the ones who are doing the victimizing.
How interesting. When bigoted, high-level clerics do something wrong, like breaking the law, they are to be excused because they "make mistakes." And yet this bishop lush risks the lives of people by driving while he's tanked, but insists that the law of the secular United States of America must follow his brand of christianity.
And, yes, everyone who disagrees with marriage equality are hypocritical bigots, especially when they think it's just fine to break the law by racing around the streets, threatening people while they're two sheets to the wind. Well, good luck on the vatican dictatorship appointing him the head of the catholics in San Francisco to oppose human and civil rights. As with all others like him, he has no credibility.
Jerry, when anyone is doing something wrong and it is a first offense we (society) tend to call it a mistake. This is normal. And then we prosecute them, because it's not a legal defense. This applies to everyone, including janitors, bishops, you and me. Don't confuse the legal sphere with the informal community.
Personally, I think that even a first offense DUI deserves some jail time.
I am not Catholic and I do not believe that anyone is either perfect or exempt from the rules.
I'm a catholic, and I do not condone these acts, child molestation, abuse, rape of mind, body, and soul, abortion etc. This is not the way to Jesus. I do believe that those who judged will have judgement brought upon them. Don't judge lest you be judge!!
I'm still trying to census the number of Catholics this man has influence over. I'm guessing that number 432,000 is now from Hawaii to Salt Lake, Nevada and Northern California. I think they are trying to imply a religious power base that is non existent, just like with the number of nuns in the US. The number of nuns might be valid, but when you figure in their average age is 70, then you have to figure in their health status as viable leaders makes them an insignificant statistic. Also mentioned recently was the 55,000 Mormon Missionaries, ( Romney used to be one in his youth ), and you consider their age, youth but no intellectual vigor and limited experience. Why doesn't someone present a figure like the number of Bachelor of Science Degrees from State Universities graduated every year, and compare that to the number of nuns or missionaries. If you did that Cordileone, is just another drunk driver who the court should remand to AA meetings to get his paper signed, and his license suspended until he completes his study assignments.
4everphillyfan, if you are a devout Catholic you are part of the problem, guaranteeing these people paychecks. If you are only a nominal Catholic, you should seriously think about walking away from that organization; if you don't you are a willing enabler.
4everphillyfan: The unsaved will be judged at the Great White Throne of Judgement (Rev.20:11-15)...The saved will be judged @ The Judgement Seat of Christ (2nd Corinthians 5:10)...Many believers foolishly think they have nothing to fear on Judgement Day...God will judge (Roman 14:12) believers for their sins & hold them accountable for the bad things they've done throughout their life...Judgement Seat of Christ will be comparable to a civil court proceeding where the guilty party is not being tried as a criminal, but rather as one who have caused hurt & damage for others & reconciliation must be made...Every believers is eternally safe because of the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ...No believer will ever go to Hell...
Yes, of course. Two people of the same sex get legally married in a secular nation, going about their business, paying their mortage and taxes, raising their children, mowing the lawn and bringing a dish to the block party and this bishop calls it the downfall of society and has to be made criminal. But when he drinks and drives, putting countless people at risk of injury and death, that's a "mistake."
You can't even prove that your mythcical jesus-creature exists. So stop pretending you know the way to it.
For all trying calculate the meaning of God's universe... Einstein: Got to a certain point, and then hit a bilnd-wall. Hawkings: got into the gist and perhaps the dark-side, but suffered huge personal cost.
And yet, you(?) possess God's true message for Earth?
Out partying with the altar boys again.
It sounds like he was out cruising the campus for college boys!
Was there a little boy in the car with him?
I was thinking the same thing.
hypocrite
How so?
How so you ask, Seattle Libtard? I'll tell you how. This man demands that the law of the USA must follow his religion, and yet he refuses to follow the laws of the USA (by refraining from driving while he's drunk). He thinks he gets to apply all laws, and no laws apply to him like all other christian bigots.
I'm not sure how you arrived at that conclusion Jerry. I don't see anywhere in the article that indicates Cordileone thinks he is exempt from the law. Breaking the law alone does not indicate as much. Can you link us to your source of additional info, please. Thank you.
Why, Baja, I'll link it right back to this article. He drove drunk, so therefore he thinks he's above the law. He wants only laws that he supports and opposes, actively, those he doesn't.
Breaking the law doesn't necessarily indicate that he thinks the law does not apply to him. More likely he just thought he would get away with something he knew he shouldn't be doing. There is a difference.
Another one of those 'do as i say not as i do' religious a-holes!!
...LOL! ...Come on now, be honest: How many DUI's have you liberal extremists had and how many times have you fantasized about teenage boys yourselves? ...Tell the truth now. ...LMAO!!!
getagrip......your post says a lot about what crosses your mind I bet.
...@kevin: Yes, drunk liberal extremists who fantasize about teenage boys are all over this board. ...LMAO!!!
...What's even more sick is when they start throwing an innocent priest into their twisted liberal fantasy though.
No DUI's because I don't drink, period--and I also don't drive, no car. Teenage boys--nah, not my thing, give me Miranda Kerr or Olivia Wilde.
So, you think anyone who doesn't share your "conservative" beliefs must fantasize about teenage boys? Yep, you are the perfect example of the typical, immoral, "religious right" low-life. The "liberals" you ridicule are better and happier people than you in every respect, but perhaps all that laughing your arse off will finally get it small enough to fit through a doorway so you can leave your mommy's basement.
...@Bruce: Hey, just check out the posts here and any other board that even mentions Catholic priests. It's always the gays and liberals who bring up the "boy" thing. ...Seriously, ANGRY liberal denial cracks me up. ...LMAO!!!
Getagrip -- you're cracked all right.
It's brought up because it did happen, not talking about it would be the dishonest thing to do. Which is what you seem to be advocating.
Get a grip:
Are you implying that the average person out there who gets a DUI and fantasizes about teenage boys is on the same level as Cordileone?
Newsflash: The average person out there who gets a DUI is not a religious leader sworn to sobriety.
The average person out there who fantasizes about teen boys (I guarantee you that the majority of people out there who fantasize about teen boys are TEEN GIRLS) has not taken a vow of chastity, celibacy, and purity.
The average person out there does not tell others that fantasizing about others (coveting thy neighbor, thy neighbor's wife, or anything that belongs to thy neighbor) is wrong.
Cordileone has taken these vows VOLUNTARILY. If he finds himself unable to stick to those vows, he should renounce them. 'Be the example you wish to make.'
Amanda - Priests are not sworn to sobriety. Also, priests are people too and thus prone to making mistakes. Not everyone can be as infallible as you. Please get off your high horse and take a long look at your hate filled life.
...@Amanda: Nope. I did not say "the average person". ...I said "gay and liberal extremists", like the ones who post all this anti-Christian hate here. ...Like the gay liberal nut who shot up those religious offices in DC the other week just because they supported Chik-fil-A. ...Get a grip lady!
That's nasty as well as a cheap shot. If he has a drinking problem, then my prayer is that he'll get help for it. Let the law takes its course.
Peace.
I'm a gay, liberal atheist and I've never had a DUI or have ever driven drunk, nor do I fantasize about having sex with children. The only ones who do all those things are christian right-wingers.
No, they are sworn to abstinence, to resisting the temptations of the flesh, and because they have thus voluntarily made these determinations to follow, they are held to a higher moral standard than the rest of us.
Absolutely. 'To err is human, to forgive, divine.'
I never said I was. While I may not have a DUI, nor do I fantasize about teen boys, I would guess that my fantasizing about Miranda Kerr or Olivia Wilde would be considered a sin to some, and I have broken plenty of secular laws; I jaywalk, curse in public (it's against the law in my municipality to curse in public) spit on the sidewalk (that's illegal in my municipality too) and have gotten tickets for moving violations (riding my bicycle on the side walk is prohibited in my municipality.) I am very, very far from being infallible, but neither am I a spiritual leader who everyone looks up to and so have to maintain the appearance that I am better than they.
Now, where on earth did you get that I've lived a 'hate-filled life?' You want my opinion on this whole thing? Everyone errs at some point. God forgives--Cordileone's accepted Jesus into his life, so even if he crashed into someone and killed them, he's still going to Heaven, so all he has to do is exhibit humility, acknowledge that he made a mistake, and 'go and sin no more'. Feel free to have a look at my posting history...I believe 'hate-filled' would be the absolute LAST adjective that could possibly be appended to me.
I actually haven't seen any posts on here condemning Christians for what Cordileone did. On the contrary, the majority of the posts on here seem to be relieved that this didn't result in harm to a child, nor did it involve anyone getting hurt or in trouble except the person who erred.
You mean it's perfectly fine for them to abuse alcohol and drink and drive? Well, what a wonder.
I thought clerics are suppose to live above the "standard" and be an "example." If they can't be, then they should be tossed, but the religious never do that. They come up with excuses.
They typical response from the supporters and defenders of those who, like this bishop lush, hate those who don't follow their cultic practices or twisted beliefs. Supporters of drunken bishop homophobes always like to think they are victims.
...@Amanda: You are just another liberal in denial.
Do you have any idea how childish that just sounded? Oh, and please refer back to the Newsvine Code Of Honor; address the article and the issues. Don't attack other posters.
Getagrip, needs to getagrip, and not on the thing between his legs.He just another die hard republican. That thinks that he has to run everything ,or raise he11 if he cant.
This was a simple thing about a priest driving drunk. Now everyone blown it way proportion. He did the crime, now let him do the time.
I would like one time to see people actually stick to the subject.
Maybe it is them who bring it up. Unfortunately, it's the priests who always lay them down.
He was drinking to numb his conscience or block out all the abuse he may be guilty of or knowing of abuse and have to hide it and the only way to live with himself is to drink.
opppsssss! to much alter wine!
...yes, and here's to too much altar wine also!
Alter Wein? Ich habe das gern.
Mich auch.
Ausgezeichnet!
Get in line in that processional,
Step into that small confessional,
There, the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original.
If it is, try playin' it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
Two, four, six, eight,
Time to transubstantiate!
Better drunk than diddling.
Gee! Between the drunks and the pedophiles,
Catholics are giving Catholics a bad name nowadays!
Chuck, Chuck! Please!! Your'e not seriously presenting the "everyone makes mistakes" argument, are you? Did this man choose to become a bishop, or was he forced at gunpoint?! Sorry Chuck, but the Bible has much to say about being a bishop. For one example, see for yourself! Open you Bible to the book of First Timothy - Chapter 3, Verses 1-7 here below is a copy for you to tead (emphasis mine)...
Chuck, the part that struck me the most was the portion that says, "A bishop then must be blameless". I mean, WOW...blameless! THAT requires some serious devotion, wouldn't you say? Not much room left after that for the "everyone makes mistakes" battlecry! Oh well...point made.
I am sure that all of you Catholic haters have never done anything wrong. Everyone makes mistakes, but just hammer on the Catholic.
...@Chuck: The liberals just do it because they are all such cowards themselves. They all figure Christians are "safe" hate targets and won't give them the beating they so richly deserve.
When you are a leader of a hate group, you are fair game.
thanks bob! Kinda puts it in perspective doesn't it.
Actually chuckie, my grandmother's Methodist upbringing forbade alcohol - and cards/dancing.
She was pretty straight, as she hammered on the catholics as hypocrites. JK
Time to end the tax exempt status for all religious organizations, leaving only the sincere to minister, seriously, on that.
Gee, the last time I checked - I wasn't a Catholic Archbishop who dictates morality for millions of people.
happy times, you should have stopped after the word organizations. Most religions are only sincere about their collections. You know, that 10% Ann Romney said they give to charity.
Good thing coca plants weren't indigenous in jeebusland. He may have been powdering his nose instead of just imbibing the blood of the j-zombie.
When catholics hammer on us, saying we have to practice and believe what they do, we're definitely going to hammer back, especially when the catholics' leaders are a bunch of drunken lushes.
Well, isn't it alot of the Catholics who have been found guilty of molesting and raping all those little children and or protecting these filthy Catholic molesters? You better believe they deserve to be "hammered"!!
The guy would have been just as wrong if he had been a Buddhist Monk. Don't drink and drive...it does not matter who you are or what you think...just do not drink and drive. His punishment should be no different than that of a black carpenter or a white bartender.
Justice should be blind. But we all know politicians get away with murder every day. So forget equal treatment as the rich take care of each other.
Hi Cousin Tim...Just lately found about about Aunt Tessie. Miss your conversation, enjoy SMIParish.
its refreshing to see one of these guys getting arrested for something other than playing with little boys pp's
He was intoxicated with wine from the altar causing his BAL to soothe him "driving" an altar boy.
Gotta love that church wine eh Padre?!?
I'm just happy it wasn't for Child Porn or sex abuse,Let's hope this is an New Trend, and no more rape of young Kids...I'm Happy for you Rev
LoL!! Drinking and driving in the Catholic church is fine as long as you aren't raping children!! You're a real beauty.
The two faced complexion of the Catholic Church is over the top. Pedophiles and drunks but same sex marriage over the top! Who here is what type of hypocrite?
Anyone notice this guy's name? I wonder what his family is like.
LOL..I DID notice the name !
Cordilione's "family" is probably more corrupt than the Coreleone's.
His mom lives in my town and I'm sure she's mad as hell at him about the whole incident!
His family is fabulous. I grew up with Sam and his brothers, went to the same parish church, high-school and such. Have known the Cordileone's almost 50 years. He made a mistake. And I bet almost everyone reading this has been guilty of a DUI or two in their time.
Thank You Mark for saying that. I too went to high school with Sam, and have known him and been his friend for the past thirty years. He confirmed both of my children. He is a wonderful human being. He has an excellent character. Sam in no way was any of the vile things that are being said in these posts, and those who choose to say them rather than forgive his mistake and accept his apology clearly have some "soul" searching to do in their own lives.
I would bet not actually. A DUI or two?? Yeah he made a mistake. He's stupid to drink and drive. Fine example for the 'flock'. I hope he gets up in the pulpit and preaches a sermon about it, and asks the congregation to be more tolerant about people who wish to live their lives their own way, to care more about the born child than the unborn, to be more charitable to the unfortunate, to be more giving, and to demand the conversion of swords into ploughshares.
But I bet he won't.
This is so delicious. it MUST be fattening!
ha ha
Meh. I don't drink, but in California, the legal intoxication level's set so low that you can blow a violation after basically just walking through a bar on an empty stomach.
And of course this is probably horribly racist etc. to say, but I'm pretty sure it's some kind of requirement that an Italian Catholic never have a red wine blood content level of less than .005, ever. For a second violation, they take away your gold chains and turn you over to the Mormons.
Where is the ceiling higher than 0.08% ? I mean, I know it's a misdemeanor to drive in Texas without an open container of alcohol and a loaded fireare, but anywhere else that's above 0.08% ?
Im sure the first thing in this guys head was "Oh God, I am screwed!"
If I were a priest I'd probably get drunk too.
You stole my line but I might add that you can't be celibate and sober both... ;-)
I am...sigh
