Please be honest and admit that this is not a crisis caused by a culture of silence. Come out and say what it is. It is a culture that glorifies sex, drugs, gangs, violence, etc. Silence is not on the list. Silence is a result of a culture that has lacked the spine to hold men accountable for the babies they make. Conservative states with strong family values have much less crime and far more guns than do more liberal states. Idaho and Utah are good examples. To tell you the truth, guns have very little to do with it. It has to do with family values. When dads take care of their families and mothers are their to nurture and love their children then you have a lot fewer kids joining gangs. Guns are just a tool, it is the people that commit or do not commit crimes. As an example, I personaly own about 20 different guns. I have never used one in any way that could be construed as criminal. Guns do not make criminals. Criminals use guns as a tool. Taking away their tools (assuming you even could) will not stop them from being criminals. The problem is deeper than that.

I was born and raised on the northwest side. I think Chicago is one of the friendliest and most beautiful of America's big cities. The problems they are experiencing now are nothing new. I lost friends to gang violence when I lived there as a teen. Guns weren't as common then, but the violence could be just as brutal. The same problems are driving this round of killing as they always have. Whenever you have poor economic conditions, illegal means of income becomes all that more attractive and necessary. Turf becomes more valuable than human life as does market share so killings to suppress competition increase. Unfortunately these idiots really don't know anything beyond point and shoot or spraying high volumes of bullets in a general direction. The end result is the tragic deaths of unintended victims like children in the streets or bystanders in a business being robbed. The only way to stop this is to confront it head on with people who are trained to handle it and I don't mean National Guard. Though the Guard is trained to handle violence, they are not trained for law enforcement, only suppression. That unfortunately would not go well in densely populated neighborhoods, or has everyone forgotten the door to door fighting in Iraq? How many civilians were killed just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time? The police are trained for this work and have the resources to combat it. They only need the support of the people and the courts to end this. Emanuel can help with both if he decides to set his political agenda aside and truly help the people of the city.

The two living upstairs heard the third being attacked downstairs. They called the police multiple times, who assured them they were on the way multiple times. Keep in mind that these are two stand-alone phrases that make up the Second Amendment. The SCOUTUS understood this. They cannot be revoked. They cannot be repealed. They cannot be CHANGED! If the 2nd amendment cannot be modified in any way, that means whatever the founding fathers meant, (which has finally been clarified by the SCOTUS), MUST stand until the United States no longer exists. And the only way for that to happen is through subversion or conquest.

DC the SCOTUS acknowledged that it is an INDIVIDUAL Right to bear arms. The Founders knew this very well...

Dr. Gary Kenk of University of Florida (Criminology Dept) estimates that firearms in the US prevents 300,00 violent crimes per year. They are fired less than 1% of the time.

Based on survey data from a 2000 study published in the Journal of Quantitative Criminology, U.S. civilians use guns to defend themselves and others from crime at least 989,883 times per year.

A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 3.5% of households had members who had used a gun "for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere." Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 1,029,615 such incidents per year. This figure excludes all "military service, police work, or work as a security guard."

And this just scratches the surface... When ALL of the data (the pieces of the puzzle) are brought together to give a complete picture, it clearly shows that guns actually SAVE many more live than they take, AND many of those that are taken with guns are of the criminal element, (there's no real loss there). So when all things are equally considered, I still fail to see the down side/negative aspect of the anti-gunner stance in any way, and always will.

If you choose NOT to own/keep a gun of any kind, that is YOUR choice. But you will NOT take my choice to have one away from me! I have never shot anyone in my life, and hope to never have to. But if I need to defend me and mine... I will not hesitate to do so.

I know you're anti-gun but you have it all wrong. There are any numbers of reasons for firearm ownership; prominent is the ability to defend one's self and family, and acting in a law enforcement manner is not one of them.

Anyone that is legally carrying a concealed firearm does so for the express purpose of self defense when no other option is available, and engaging any lunatic on a street is the explicit domain of the police. So here's what I read. After last weekend they actually went out and enforced the laws and made a bunch of busts. Then they treaten to keep doing the same if no one talks. Anyone see a problem with this? They have all these laws but don't enforce them! What good is it going to do to pass more laws if they aren't enforced?

Well one thing about cocaine is the fact that by "rocking it" they can expand the volume of the cocaine because of how its processed. Therefore making "Rock Cocaine" less expensive then when it comes in the powder form. This is also the most addictive way to get hooked on cocaine and get what they call "the mores" when you do this stuff. Which the chemical change that cocaine causes in your brain takes away alot of your old inhibitions that you would normally have in place to keep you from doing things you would normally not do if you weren't using rock cocaine.

This drug makes many a people do things they aren't proud of. Anywhere from robbery, shoplifting, prostitution both male and female, sex for drugs, selling all your precious valuables before stealing others. People who are addicted will do anything for their next fix. It matters not to them who they harm to get their addiction fed. What needs to happen is some common sense approach to this problem which will take plays from the left and the right. I for one say they legalize the drugs, bring it under the control of local agencies so it can be monitored and regulated. Then we begin dealing with those people who truly want help getting off drugs and rehabilitate them. There are many who want help but can't afford help or there is none for them. There are some answers and yes I am conservative, yet I believe in other ways to deal with our community issues.

Go ahead, make more laws. The problem is they don't get enforced. Read the article, they are threatening to make more arrests and crack down more. Why wouldn't they just do that in the first place. It's clearly the fault of the police because they aren't enforcing the laws, they just wait for something to happen and then make an arrest instead of going after people breaking the law before someone gets killed. It would be like if cops didn't pull people over for speeding and then when an accident happens and someone is killed they try to enforce it and ask you how fast you were going when the accident too place.

So he wants even more gun laws for a city that basically has a ban on them? If he creates 100 more laws does he think that someone that will kill another human is going to care that they are breaking the law by having a gun? That is why creating new laws will never work. One thing that might help is if you increased the penalty. Get caught will an illegal gun? 10 years. Shoot a gun at someone? 20 years. Treat shooting at someone just like murdering someone. Why give them a break because they are a bad shot?

If the money in the turf dries up, depressed drug sales.

Law abiding citizens as usual, so a lot of good these laws do... they simply don't work and are unconstitutional. Then you add to the fact that Chicago is the most corrupt town in the world and somewhere down the line this corruption ends with deaths or more crime, so they aren't real serious about cutting out any crime that impacts the dirty deals going on within the politics. Lead by example... stop creating fascist laws that don't work and only serve as window dressing. Chicago needs a good power wash and a large sewer drain. More people than not in positions of decision in this town have their hand in the cookie jar.

You know Daryl, I've actually been to one of those parties before. It was so much more that you are actually giving it credit for. What I witnessed at this party was the grace and dignity given to the memory of the victims. There was gladness that the system worked and that the criminal actually had to account for his crimes by paying the highest penalty for depraved acts. There was a peace in the fact that the victims were not forgotten and their lives were valued.

I didn't live in Huntsville very long but I knew some prosecutors who worked very hard to assure that the person sitting on death row for a crime actually committed the crime. I knew one of the Psychologists, who's job it was to make sure that the folks on death row were sane and of full mental acuity before their date with death. She couldn't say much because of privacy issues but in general she said the vast majority were not addled or slow or suffering from any psychosis, they knew what they did and would lie about anything. It was all very interesting and certainly a look into a system that many criticize without consideration for the victims of these depraved souls on death row.

There is no reason to disarm or inconvenience me, in my rural community, because gangbangers are killing each other in Chicago's southside.

Another comment blindly made. I do not know of any hospital that has turned a child away for treatment anywhere. They may not give requested treatment depending on the circumstance but hospitals are required by law to give emergency treatment to everyone. In the case of children, there are many foundations and programs that will help secure and pay for care especially if they are poor.

Enforcement is the ticket out but unfortunately those idiots you rail at also include the ones that are letting violent offenders back on the streets with a slap on the wrist. Most states have a separate penalty for use of a gun in a crime, when a gun is used that penalty should be fully enforced and served with no chance of parole before the penalty for the crime that was committed. For example, if the penalty for robbery is 2-5, but the penalty for using a weapon in the commission of a crime is 10 years, the 10 years should be served first in full before starting the 2-5 for the robbery. Our justice system has been crippled by liberals and lawyers who have shaped it into a business and not justice.

Mexico has very strict gun laws. Few law-abiding citizens even own guns. The gangs there do not steal guns from all the gun-nut Mexicans. They buy them from arms dealers from other countries. Not sure what would make anyone think a gang in Chicago couldn't procure guns this way if that's the only way they could get them.

Oh yes, and since very, very few people own guns legally in Mexico, they have an extremely low crime and murder rate.

There are sectors of the country where the de-facto government is the DRUG CARTEL, places where the local police are either executed or cowed, newspapers are muzzled or destroyed and the federal government is powerless to take it back. In the last few years, many thousands of Mexicans (as well as illegals transiting Mexico) have been killed by the cartel's private armies. The violence has actually spilled over into tourist oriented areas, where formerly the cartels had taken a hands-off attitude.

You are correct, though, gun laws in Mexico are very strict, essentially disarming the public. There is ONE legal gun dealer in the ENTIRE COUNTRY, where a law-abiding citizen can purchase ONE firearm which cannot be in a 'military' caliber. gop....i worked on many a SHI&CAGO HUD home and can tell you from fact being out in the field these inner city minorities are savages. they do not posses the same moral comprehension normal people do and cannot compute in their brains that there are consequences for their actions.if they successfully steal from you they will still try and kill you because all they are is human garbage. you can thank lbj in 65 and his vision of a great society for this mess...the start of lifetime welfare receipients as we know it, and the beginning of the end of many a great american city.

In over thirty years of construction I too have worked on many a HUD home and it doesn't necessarily have to be minorities in them to be considered savages. I once worked on a home occupied by a single white woman and her three children. The doors in the home all needed to be replaced because they had holes kicked through them. When I began to remove the old doors I noticed that the privacy locks were all reversed so that they could be locked from the outside not the in. I found out later that the woman used to lock her children in the bedrooms when a boyfriend would come so they could party!

I do agree that it all started with the advent of our welfare society, but placing the blame solely on LBJ isn't correct either, it goes back even farther than that. The problem with the welfare state is that there is literally no way to remove someone from the government teat once they start on it. Oh ya there are rules and regulations a plenty, but they are seldom followed and easily circumvented unless the person has some self respect and the longing to elevate their status in life. While minorities make up a large percentage of this part of our society, it is not a minority problem, it is actually a social one. We are failing by neglecting the worth of self respect and hard work. Our current president lacks the vision to see what he is doing by condemning the rich and the business owners. He is creating further havoc by creating class warfare at a time where we need to put all petty crap aside and pull together as a nation. The rich get richer because they continue to work at it and the poor get poorer because they fail to work at elevating themselves. In our country, unlike so many others, there is a way out of poverty for those that wish it. It is not easy, and in most cases requires sacrifice to achieve, but it is possible. The problem is that most are not willing to do what is necessary because it is easier to hold out your hand and let the government put something in it.

I also lived in Chicago while going to IIT in the the 90's. I volunteered regularly in HUD tenements. Doing everything from cleaning out the apartment after it was abandoned and gutted by previous tenants for Contractors to come in and fix only to have the same place gutted again inside three months. To painting current tenants room for free having them and their grand kids thank me while working and then those same kids throw rocks at me thirty minutes later as I left the complex because I was white. I was shot at more then once in that neighborhood right off 36thand State just two blocks form Comiskey park.

I also saw Daily initiate the original clean up of the city by condemning and imploding some of those same tenements and forcing those people OUT of the city while he tried to revitalize the loop. That was the only thing that seemed to 'improve' the situation in Chicago. The forceful removal and disbursement of large groups of urban dwellers, and let us be honest for a moment, they were black, almost exclusively. Their culture and amoral codes are a disgrace and unfortunately I don't believe they will ever improve on their own. Only through brute force, a lot of suffering and the intentional disbursal of large groups of the people that hold these values, or lack there of do they even have a wiff of a prayer.

And that's from someone who's been in the @!$%# and tried to help these people. Not you arm chair generals sitting in your suburban white picket fenced homes sipping your lattes. I wish I wasn't so jaded at times but I have to face the reality of my experiences and the situation as it stands in Chicago and by and large most of our inner cities.

holes in doors ain't nothin! i've seen hvac returns clogged with so many dirty diapers and drug paraphenalia the owner actually had to have a hazmat team come in. i've seen cockroaches by the thousands, while these inner city minorities sleep off their uncle cracky in the mid -day.all they do is ruin one taxpayer provided home , rack up unpaid utilities, get another voucher in another savages name and do it all over again.i could tell you more horror stories than you want to hear. and sorry...read history, before the civil rights act of 65 and lbj's vision of a great society there were nowhere near problems the inner cities have like they do now.take a trip with me into englewood at dusk on a warm evening, better bring your kevlar vest and trauma plate.oh and you can't defend yourself legally...thanks to quinn , rahm, liberal democrats and all the other pc correct politicians that want to cater to minorities for their vote.

They all need weapons.Either they get real polite or the population of idiots goes down,a win win either way.

I watched the news and the government alloted 50 million dollars for security for the republican conferance in Florida.To bad Obama didnt send a few million to Chicago and Detroit for more cops. Where i live everyone has guns and nobody shoots anyone.Elk get shot though.

We own apartment complexes, and we accept Section 8 housing. I've seen all this and more as well. Where I disagree is making it a racial issue. Low income Americans IN GENERAL have no respect for our property. They ALL destroy our apartments. They move in on a rent special because it's cheaper than an extended stay hotel. So they lay down that $300. They KNOW the system, so we never see another penny. The eviction process takes a month or more from the time the warrant is filed. They live in the unit up to TEN WEEKS and we never see a penny beyond the initial $300, and in those ten weeks they destroy the place. Holes in the wall ranging in size from fists to human bodies. Bullet holes. Rotted food because they only had electricity the first FOUR weeks. Once a closet full of kids clothing all drenched in urine after a month with no A/C in August. Cockroaches and worse because they fish furniture out of the dumpsters. Alcohol bottles and drug paraphernalia.

These are Americans of ALL races.
