The mayor of the South Texas town of Hollywood Park has died after apparently being attacked by a 500-pound donkey on his ranch, officials said Wednesday.
The body of Mayor William "Bill" Bohlke, 65, was found Monday night during a search by Atascosa County Sheriff’s deputies and relatives, according to the sheriff’s office.
Chief Deputy David Soward told The Associated Press that Bohlke apparently was attacked on Monday morning by an aggressive male donkey on his ranch.
A written statement from the family, published on the Hollywood Park town website, said Bohlke suffered “a fatal injury while taking care of his prized cow herd near Pleasanton.”

“Bill, your mayor, dearly loved serving you, our community, and we only wish he was here to continue doing so,” the family's statement said.
Bohlke, who was retired from the Air Force and had been a decorated B-52 pilot and squadron commander in the Vietnam War, was found about 50 yards from his truck, the San Antonio Express-News website reported.
“They can become very aggressive, very mean, sometimes triggered by a female in heat,” Soward told the paper. “We'll probably never know what triggered it, but it was evident that this particular donkey was involved, based on the evidence at the scene and what we saw on this donkey.” Soward did not elaborate.
Hollywood Park is a town of about 3,300 people north of San Antonio. Mayor Pro Tem Steve Phillips will step in as acting mayor, according to the AP.

Yes, it's sad that he died. And in such a way. But you also have to remember that life goes on, too, and I think if this guy were alive today reading this about someone else, he'd probably get a chuckle or two out of it...just because you die doesn't mean you lose your sense of humor.
What a dumbass, the man was a decorated war vet and you feel the need to make stupid comments. When he was roaring thunder he wasn't thinking politics. He sounds like a great American Democrat or Republican.

Years ago my friend and I heard a statistic that said more people die from donkeys than in plane crashes, which to us sounded like a dumb way to go (especially to put on an obituary) ...so we started a saying "Too much donkey will kill you" meaning too much stupidity will be your downfall. Unfortunately I am afraid your attempt at decency and civility are wasted here. The main reason I view this comments board is to remind myself why I do not call myself a Democrat. We can take comfort in knowing this crowd does represent the minority of our society and the rest that voted for the "the Dream" have awaken and we shall regain our honor and integrity as a Nation starting in November, not to mention our compassion and dignity.
Nothing wrong with injecting a little humor into a sad situation. I would encourage people to make jokes about my death if I died in a goofy way.

Any political group that includes the likes of Cheney, Rove, Norquist, Hannity, Coulter, Malkin, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, etc. has no right to use words like honor and integrity. The only exception is if those words are preceded by "the lack of."
Not trying to be funny, but I've heard donkey's are stubborn and mules are mean, but I never heard of a donkey being mean. I guess that is where mules get it from. This is a shame. I could have this backwards.
Donkeys are not dumb, stupid or stubborn as some here have claimed. I've owned several donkeys - they are highly intelligent animals who normally show no aggression to humans (unless you're trimming their hoofs!) so this donkey's behavior may say something about the humans around him. They will probably put him down, which would be a shame.
A jack donkey can be very aggressive if he's interested in a female and you are in the way. I had both of mine gelded for that very reason. If he's not being used for breeding, there's no need to leave him intact.
Stallions are worse. Fifteen-hundred pounds of excited horse is no joke and the chances of your winning over him are pretty well nil set.
Anyone who owns equines knows the dangers. This poor man just made a terrible mistake and paid the price of his error.

I agree, Eric from NL. This man's loved ones are planning his funeral right now. I'm sure none of them are in much of a laughing mood. Jokes have their place, but, this isn't one of them. It's called 'empathy'. Unfortunately, some of us don't get that.
Last time I checked, we all have one inheritence from birth... one death. Call it gallows humor or grave digger humor, but humor is one of the ways that we ALL deal with life's uncomfortable truths. And the older you get, and the closer inevitability comes, the more welcome humor can be. This is not disrespect for the individual, or to minimize the horror of his means of death. It is more a set of word games surrounding oft-used expressions, much like innuendo or toilet jokes. More dealing with sensitive issues by diversion through humor.
For those of a morbid bent, go on ahead being all serious and mournful for a man and his family, whom you didn't know existed, until a rediculous headline caught your eye. And how many of you immediately thought of beastiality gone wrong?
As for myself, I have all of 10 family members left, half of whom are like me, running on fumes. My friends are all older. In the past 5 years, I have attended 2 weddings, 2 christenings, and 10 funerals. I think I have earned my right to laugh at death.

No, degenerate. Donkeys are put in with horses and cattle as a settling influence. But as part of that role, behaviorally, they adopt the males and foals, or cows and calves, as their own. It is possible that even a cow in estrus could have set the donkey off. And, btw, a 500# donkey is a BIG donkey.
Donkeys also will fight off coyotes. 500 pounds is rather small compared to a regular horse size or cow. There are lots of them in pastures around here with cattle. An 800 to 1000 pound donkey would be a BIG donkey. 500 lb is like pony sized. Still, you can't strong arm even a 500 pounder,unless you know what to do. Sad the way this man had to die.

Rose123 and Eric from NL: if the Mayor had died from being kicked by a horse or a cow, it would not have made the national headlines. As painful as the death is to the family, it is funny.
Like a clown who is killed when the car he climbs out of runs him over or the male porn star who uses Viagra and dies from gangrene resulting from priapism; the unusual situation resulting in a death is too funny to not comment on it.
No one actually has harmful thoughts for the man or his family. You just have to lighten up and laugh when you can. The alternative is to cry, far too often.
