Russell Christopher Hofstad, 25, was sentenced to two years in prison and four years probation over animal cruelty and burglary charges.
PHOENIX -- An Arizona drifter who skinned a cat and wore its tail and innards around his neck was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday.
An Arizona Superior Court judge also sentenced Russell Christopher Hofstad, 25, to four years probation on his release, the Maricopa County Attorney's office said.
Hofstad pleaded no contest last month to a felony animal cruelty charge and guilty to a burglary charge. According to the criminal complaint, police arrested Hofstad in January after he broke into a Phoenix warehouse used as a music venue.
Cops: Man skinned and ate cat, used tail as necklace
Officers found the skinned and gutted remains of a cat inside, and Hofstad wearing the cat's tail and a piece of its "internals" around his neck on a rope, with his face painted. Police said he had eaten parts of the cat, while some of its other internal organs were kept in a cooler.
Hofstad told police he had recently been released from jail and had nowhere to live. He said he had not eaten in a few days, so he hit the cat with a stick and then stabbed it.
He planned to stuff the animal and save the skeleton "for a decoration for a party."

What kind of jail system do we have that releases a guy like this from jail that has nowhere to live? And what happens in two years when he's released again? Extreme budget cutting created this horrible act and therefore maybe some part of this belongs to us.

Why would anyone think a criminal should be given a home upon release? He did this victimless "crime" just so he COULD go back to prison and have a "home" three meals a day and friends. Some people like that style of life. Cats are animals. Some people eat animals. Letting the cat roam is a bigger crime if you really love cats.

Western "society" may frown on eating pets but in many cultures they raise all sorts of animals for complete use. That includes consumption as food.

I'm pretty sure if the guy broke into your house, he would sooner raid your refrigerator than start cooking your cat in the oven. Anyway, it sounds to me like he ate the cat from desperation, but him wearing entrails and tail around his neck hints that he isn't alright upstairs. And plus, does Arizona not have soup kitchens? You'd think he would try to find one if he was that hungry/in need of help.
I believe the state did this man a favor. He is mentally ill and homeless. Now with incarceration he has a place to sleep, food and maybe will be eligible for medication.
Voted "most likely to be a future Jeff Dahmer" in his high school yearbook, with a some resemblance to Charlie Manson. I'm sure they'll let him back out on the streets in several years after his two year sentence and 4 years of probation. Scary to think about what he'll do next time. This very sick young man needs to be incarcerated in a mental institution for the rest of his life.

I can somewhat agree with freedomfrys, this man without a doubt has some mental illness that need to be addressed. They're times when tax dollars spent toward a human being is well worth it. I agree. Save the tax payers money. Has he had a mental evaluation? I think he needs it. I HATE (and this is a word I do not like) cruelty to animals. Two years in prison is not enough put him in a mental ward and keep him there because next it will be a human body he will be wearing body parts from around his neck. This world is full of sickos.

It would be much cheaper to make sure people offered help with a place to eat sleep and look for work rather than almost forcing them to re offend, go though the court syste, and eventually back into being a ward of the state. @Know-how I'm unsure about Ariz. but in some areas people with criminal histories are exempt from homeless shelters

I wouldn't be as creeped out if he has just killed the cat and ate it. He was hungry... you do what you have to do. The details about him wearing the tail/innards and keeping remains in a cooler is what makes me think he is just a little messed up in the mind.
This guy needs help. It is sad that he will be released in two years to fend for himself again when he obviously doesn't have the mental capacity to do so. Situations like this don't just threaten the wellbeing of this man, but those who he will come into contact with in the future. It is irresponsible.
Just look into those (Manson) eyes, you can tell there is something evil in that person, he has obviously been in this position before, the worst possible punishment is in his future! he will be handed over to bleeding heart liberals for evaluation and counseling. after that (he will be fit for) the nut house. the counselors will rationalize everything he has done and tell him its not his fault, turn him into a whining liberal that blames all his problems on republicans, before he goes out and burns down a building full of people or runs down a busy street stabbing people at random. Could use him in my neighborhood. The strays and uncontrolled house cats around here do nothing but piss and s**t all over my property 24/7. They destroyed my garden, scratched up my car, and killed every bird that dared to enter my yard. Cats are nothing but mangy stinking pests. And they multiply like rabbits. My block would be like a non-stop 24 hour buffet to this guy.
That kind of behavior (not the eating, the skinning / preserving organs etc.) is a big warning sign for similar acts in the future, except towards humans. Sociopaths can often start off with animal cruelty. If he had just ate the cat, that would be more understandable, but skinning it and wearing its organs...
The man needs help. I don't know if the problems are related to drug use / trauma / other circumstances or if they are inherent, but he needs help. If it is the former, it is a shame that people can reach that state in today's society. Then again, maybe he did do it so he could have shelter and food. But if that were the case I don't think he would wear the organs...got to be something else going on.

to mean that this man should live in a person's house - I thought he implied that this man has serious mental issues, something that our for-profit prisons do not address. Jail will do nothing for this man - he needs (most likely) permanent psychiatric help. Unfortunately, most long term psychiatric "prisons" were closed in the 80's and now these people are free to wander about. It's not just that he killed a cat - he was wearing "innards" or "entrails" - i.e. the cat's bowels.... that is not normal, he must have had flies all over him.
The prison system is not equipped to handle those who are criminally insane or insane to a degree that if off their medications (i.e. not in a secure environment) they have the ability to become violent to themselves or others.

Maybe if you would go to local shelter and borrow a safe trap(yes, ALL facilities have them) and trap the "strays" in your neighborhood, they'd be spayed and neutered so they would not multiply at all, and hopefully be given a home, like they deserve, not running wild because humans let them down. Cats are not "stinky pests", they are far cleaner than a dog and many humans. Sounds like you live in a very lousy neighborhood, dude. And remember this jerk, cats were "domesticated by humans", we did ask for their permission, so when you domesticate a species, you ARE RESPONSIBLE for them. Without cats the vast majority of people in Europe would have been wiped out, they saved us from the plague. There is a direct correlation between how people treat animals, and the quality of ones life. Apparently you never got that. And am I supposed to love your "Christian" values?, you don't have any.

Well, I hope you never suffer a traumatic brain injury or accident that leaves you homeless, hungry and hearing voices.... some mental illnesses sneak up on people - if that happened to you Ed, would you want to be treated as a disposable human?
My great-Uncle was a math mastermind, at 25 he became schizophrenic. He was a danger to others and himself - in terms of, he would leave stove burners on, near a stack of papers, etc. His older brother devoted his life to caring for him - making sure he took his meds, taking him to the doctor, etc... He lived with his brother - never married, never had children. Without his brother's care, my great-Uncle would have been institutionalized (1950's) and then let out with no life or coping skills in the 80's. Luckily, that never happened - his brother cared for him and they died within months of each other. FYI - my great-Uncle and his brother were good people who I miss! I wouldn't be able to know him if he was not on his meds.

Some of you haven't been to a big city lately I see, Phoenix has thousands of people like this man, you can't get from the parking lot and into or out of a store in that city without being approached by these people. Here in Tucson I have my favorites that I give to, they work the stores I go to most. I say "work" because I couldn't stand out there all day in this heat and do what they do, you talk about a will to survive!
The best adjusted to this life are the older Black men in our parks, I've never seen them panhandle, they probably know they would be the ones who people would call the cops on...gotta love stereotypes, all homeless are not treated equally. The ones who scare me the most are the skinny meth-head women, they always want a ride somewhere, maybe that is code for they want money for sex...eeewwww!

Budget cuts have NOTHING to do with this. The problem is that we jamb-pack our prisons full of people who don't belong there. We don't need to be paying room and board for non-violent drug and civil offenders. This guy is obviously another example of someone who doesn't belong in prison because he's clearly a nut-job. Locking him away in a hospital will likely be cheaper than the revolving door prison system he's caught up in now.
If homeless people were wild animals our society would have more compassion for them. I say let them be. Let them eat cats and rats. Why not? What is the harm? Maybe this guy be better off in jail, but I doubt it. He would have been abused there. And we would be paying for it. that is totally stupid.

I could be wrong - but I think the "budget cuts" to which freedomfrys referred to - meant the cutting of nearly all in-patient psychiatric facilities (that happened in the 80's) NOT prison budget cutting - the for-profit prisons are raking in a ton of money and most towns love them because it adds jobs.
That said, I totally agree with your entire statement (well said):

Knowing there is something extremely wrong with the guy, do you help him out ? Get medical attention for him ? Use tax paying dollars to feed and house him, or does society already deem this guy as not fit for life and just kill him off and prevent him from killing a human being next and maybe eating them.
Society would be like , we want to help but dont use my tax paying dollars.. Some body has to.. Or society can just not care and say tough luck, sucks to be him, let him do what ever he has to do to survive, which maybe breaking into your house to do such thing.
Personally he needs to be evaluated and seen if he is fit to be loose in society. Now him killing a cat wouldnt seem all that messed up, perhaps he was hungary and needed food, but to skin and wear its organs, thats when this becomes a bit weird.
I wouldnt go as far as getting the sentence he did for killing and skinning the cat, we dont know if we killed the cat right away, or slowly tortured it while it was alive.
Problem here is that even if they were to put him in a facility that would address his obvious mental health problems he would more then likley stop taking his medication once back on his own. A high percentage of homeless individuals are this way. "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink", sad but very true. The other issue is he obviously does not know how to assimulate into society after being jailed, and our system does little to address this. Most likely he will get out and end up killing a person so he can get locked up for good. And don't fool yourself most inmates in some sick way like being in jail. They get to work out at the free gym, three free meals a day, hang with thier friends all day, sleep as much as they want, and no responsbilities like paying bills and caring for kids (lol soudns like a teenager). Sure they have to deal with violence amongst themselves, but for most this is just a way of life, most of them are alpha dogs and like being violent. And for long term criminals it is all that they know and you can't expect them to step out into the world after living like that and be like "Gee I am so glad to finally be out, let me settle down and find that non existant job for criminals, get married to a nice gal, and raise my kids to never be like me. Just aint going to happen people!

Just because humans have chosen to keep cats in their domeciles does not make them domesticated. Perhaps you should do some research. Cats will kill with reckless abandon when given the freedom to do so because their instincts to kill have not been bred out of them.

One poster said "it was only a stray.....". How do we know this? Because no collar was found? Can you picture a cat (a dog? a child?), that maybe got out of the house by mistake & is now lost and needing help? And this is what they found!

That is precisely the problem, not just for this man but for many people who have slipped under the radar, yet have severe psychiatric problems. They used to be committed - at an institution for life. There, they received the medicine, etc. that they needed. As I said before, most long-term psychiatric facilities were closed in the 80's. That corresponded to a jump in crime rates, since most ended up in HUD's system.
When people say "I don't want my taxes going to "these" people (as Marmaduke pointed out) - there is a problem. They are still humans, and they should not be treated as disposable. I pay school taxes, yet I have no children...I pay taxes that fund wars that I don't like... So, we need to offer long-term (as in life, if deemed so by a court & physician) institutional care for those who are a danger to themselves or others if off of their much needed medications. It would be what a "humane" society should deem necessary.
I'm sickened by the thought of a 2 or 3 year old child wandering away from home (you know it happens; we see it on the news) scared, hungry, tired.......and THIS is what they find.

We have enough wild cats running around. I do know that there used to be a lady in town that sold burritos and tacos made with stray cats many years ago. In my travels around the world, I've been in hotels that had dog and cat on the buffet. I have never been able to eat that myself. However, this guy may have been terribly hungry and did not really want to go begging for food. I keep my cat inside the house and my dogs are not allowed to roam free. "If" this was a stray cat, I do not really see the harm in it. I have eaten rattlesnake that I killed and barbecued.
I do not know all of the conditions of this gentleman, but he may have been desperately hungry and that can be enough to make a person do something different for a meal. While I am not defending him, I am not calling him a criminal either. It would take a psych evalluation to find out the true reason.
We even used to go shoot wild pigs to eat. They were a hazard to the ranches and the meat was quite good when cooked correctly. I hope this turns out well for all concerned one way or another.

JCB-1236504........ Don't know how religion came into this, but you must be a cat lover judging from the anger in your post. A lot of my friends are cat people. And dog people.( Don't make cat jokes around cat people!) You cant get your point across without calling me a pathetic human being and a jerk. First of all, I live in a very nice neighborhood in which I pay a lot of money to live and keep my home beautiful. The people who live in the section 8 housing two blocks away don't care about that or much of anything else. So they feed stray dogs and cats and let them loose to pee and crap all over the rest of the area. Second, I do care about animals ( including cats,which I still personally despise) and have rescued more of them than I can count and found them shelter and good homes. But it doesn't mean that I should enjoy or ignore having my property destroyed by uncared-for strays. And sorry, but stray cats,dogs, and their feces spread disease and can be very destructive. Third, about my apparent lack of Christian values (still don't know where that came from) and that sick clown having a 24hr cat buffet: (1) Drop the personal insults. (you know nothing about me or my values) And (2) get a sense of humor.

You do have to worry what this guy might do next after getting out. If he sees prison as his safety valve, and a 2 year stint is too short for him, he might seek out a crime that gets him a longer ride under state care, and that could be bad for some innocent person(s).
A lot of people do deliberately allow their pet cats go outside and roam free (I've read articles about the damage they do to the song bird population), I see it here next door and across the street, one of the cats killed a Mallard duck by the pond recently, ripped its head off but didn't eat anything (a coyote or redtail would have eaten it), just killed for the sake of killing I guess. If their cat disappears, it's the owner's fault for not being responsible. Around here, coyotes are more likely to do the killing and eating of cats than ex-cons.

In my eye's cats animals are just as much human if not more than some people. They don't go around running there mouth like I see here, This person could have found a food shelter I mean come on to wear it around his neck!!! Some thing is not working in that head of his or yours for taking up for him. I do believe in God and not killing babies and heck yell I would slam his butt in the jail there he will get food, So don't even go there with me for real. Cats are not human, they are eaten in some parts of the world, China for one. Don't equate eating a cat to eating a child, don't equate killing a cat to harming a human, period. What is the difference if you kill a cat for food, or a chicken, or a lamb, or a cow, or a pig? None! It was just the way it was killed or it's parts displayed. I agree that this man was mentally unstable, but if eating cats is your thing, Big deal!
Killing and eating a feral cat is no worse than killing a squirrel... about the same to me, I would eat neither. It was the other things that displayed a mental imbalance. This man should be in a behavioral ward have psychological evaluations performed, maybe medicines given. There is a possibility that he could be a productive citizen. The way they are going about it now he will never receive the help he needs. MSnotsi you are more mentally unstable than the man in this article.
The human species is not progressing. We are stagnant - still doing heinous things to each other and to the innocent creatures unfortunate enough to share this planet with us.

There are resources available today for people who are hungry, and normal people would utilize them rather than going down this animal's chosen path. This reminds me of a TV news story I saw a few years ago about a guy in an oriental country whose job it was to cook cats. He grabbed the cat by the head with a pair of tongs and dipped it in boiling oil for a few seconds, [made the skin come of easier] then skinned it and put it back in the oil, STILL ALIVE, to cook. The man had absolutely no shame or guilt about it, in fact, he looked around at the cameras with a rather bewildered expression, like he couldn't understand all the interest taken in his mundane job of cooking cats.
Now, I found it rather shocking that he skinned and cooked a cat alive, but I was born and raised in North America where we bestow human-like rights on cats and dogs. [but not pigs and chickens, they're FOOD!] Whose attitude about cats is sick, ours or the cat cooker's?

There's a big difference between a cat and a lobster.

Cats, on the other hand, feel pain in a very conscious, very emotional way.

This young 25 year old man was Homeless, had no food & was Hungry. So he "hunted" whatever prey was available--a stray cat. Then, he ATE it!!! I believe our society is so hypocritical. We value certain animals over others--the majority of "US" eat MEAT from animals that lived & died in much worse conditions than the CAT. "We" wear the skins & hides & furs...and that's "OK"? "We" kill for sport & stuff the animals for display...and that's "OK"?
In my opinion, LIFE is to be treasured. I'm horrified that the cat was killed & eaten; I love cats...all animals. That doesn't mean I haven't been poor enough to eat the deer that was hunted & sacrificed to help feed my family. What if the headlines said sentenced to two years for breaking and entering after release from jail. would you view this differently. the cat just made the story more interesting, its all about how you word something you all dismiss the breaking and enter part and head straight to the cat. your focus is on the cat,not the breaking and entering, and the fact he was just released from jail for some unknown thing, and since the guy is a derelict maybe prison is the better for the time being.
I think the point here is that it is not normal to kill, skin and eat a domestic cat. Most serial killers start out by killing helpless animals and then they graduate to humans. That is what this person is gearing up to be is a serial killer. He needs to be in prison.

A lot of resturants have locks on their trash for the very purpose of keeping homeless out of it. It would be a homeless magnet otherwise and look bad for business. I'm not saying good or bad, it's just what they do. Grocery stores sometimes donate out of date food to shelters. That's good by me.

His actions regarding the cat should only be a crime if the animal belonged to someone, and was collared or marked. Animals are food, and if you're starving you will hunt them, kill them, and eat them; cow, lamb, chicken, dog, cat, hamster - it makes little real difference. To survive you will do this. A dog would eat us to survive! :) Just because some people keep those animals as pets does not mean the act of consuming them should be criminal, regardless of how uncomfortable it makes them. In India you could be arrested for killing a cow and consuming a freshly grilled steak.

Some of the comments here are alarming, some entertaining, but we shouldn't forget that this man exhibited very abnormal behavior, the kind of behavior that may be a prelude to even more depraved and violent acts in the future. I would be interested to know how he came to be the person he is. What is his family like? Who raised him? Was he high when he killed the cat and began wearing it's innards around his neck? There are lessons to be learned from examining his background that might provide insight and allow society to take action to help rehabilitate or, if that isn't possible, to permanently incarcerate him before his violence escalates. If he was just hungry there are plenty of ways to get food that don't involve killing and eating stray cats.

nibor, I never said that I personally wanted to try to rehabilitate this sorry excuse of a human being. I do think knowing his background could help with decisions related to helping him. If helping him isn't possible, then understanding could allow a legal effort to be mounted to attempt to keep him locked up for the rest of his life. People like him are the ones that everyone ends up standing around asking about after the fact.
Those who are focused on the cat are missing the point, deliberately or not. This guy could have sought food at the local mission, church, food bank or even begged for money to buy it but instead clubbed a cat to death and ate it.
