A judge in Virginia imposed a 23-year prison sentence on George W. Huguely V, a former University of Virginia lacrosse player convicted in the alcohol-fueled beating death of ex-girlfriend Yeardley Love in 2010, The Associated Press reported Thursday.
Love's body was found on May 3, 2010, face down on a bloody pillow in her apartment near the university where she was also a student and lacrosse player, Reuters reported.
Huguely, a 24-year-old from Chevy Chase, Md., was convicted in February of second-degree murder as well as grand larceny for stealing a computer from Love’s apartment.

Yeardley Love, who died in May 2010 at the hands of her sometimes boyfriend, George Huguely V. Huguely was convicted of manslaughter in February and sentenced to 23 years in prison on Thursday.
Prosecutors said Huguely entered the apartment while Love was sleeping, kicked in her bedroom door and then slammed her head against the wall. She was 22 and about to graduate.
Huguely's defense team said there was no evidence that he intended to kill Love, of Cockeysville, Md., and suggested instead that she had suffocated on the bloody pillow.
The jury recommended a 25-year sentence for the murder and an additional one year for the theft. The defense sought a 14-year sentence, the AP reported.
Love’s family is seeking more than $29 million in damages from the state and university officials, alleging they did not properly handle a separate incident in 2009 when Huguely attacked a lacrosse teammate while drunk, Businessweek reported. The family has also filed a lawsuit against Huguely, the report said.

You people assuaging the anger I share with you over this inexplicable verdict with "he'll get his in prison"....what makes you think the system that failed her is going to start "working" in prison? They will most likely keep him from the general population and in a few years he'll walk scot free. That he can beat a girl to death and the defense has the gall to say "he didn't kill her, she suffocated in the blood soaked pillow" shows that once again lawyers are the most despicable @!$%# on the planet and I guess some things aren't as "unforgiveable" as I thought. He should be put to death.
He will be with the general population. He is just a college student. Young men are in jail right now for life for just having drugs on them and this boy kills someone and get 23 years. So knowing they all watch TV and know he is coming its is not going to be pretty.

There is no parole in VA he will get good behavior time, but will serve at least 20 yrs assuming he is a good little boy in prison.
he should have got no less then life plus 100 years death sentence would have been the right way ( ahng-em-high) would stop a lot of killings done in public for everyone to see if you kill somebody you die

Let me guess, the family of the victim needs 29,000,000 dollars to make it all go away! WTF! It is not the tax payers of Virginia's fault this guy was a drunken psychopath! Parents need to learn something YES your little baby will!! Parents send kids off to college thinking "my little sweetheart wouldn't do that! Yes they do !! They drink and they party!! And at some schools they really party!! Why do you think American kids take easy classes while the foreign kids are taking the sciences !?
Our kids are too busy playing beer-pong! I know from the stories my oldest has told me! Kids trying to drink a full quart of vodka who have never drank before. Kids who don't study because they get into the "party scene" kids who spend more time smoking weed then studying. The college party culture is part of the problem!!!

Here ya go mothers of this planet. Show this article to your young male teens. Violence against women or anyone else is a dead end path. Drunk or sober, strong men are no match for the legal system. No one is above rotting in jail.

I am apaled that the judge for not giving him life without parole. He might just get life when he gets to jail and they get hold of him. He had attacked before and has a drinking problem and the school didn't boot his arse out of school for misbehavior. If they had she might still be alive today. Her life is over and in like 12 years he's back out there boozing it up and looking for his next victim. He will simple live some place else where no one knows who and what he is and go on with life or end up working at his rich dads business or something. We do not have justice any more. We care more for the rights of murderers and child molestors than the victims. I think if we adopt Texas's laws here and kill a few more the crime will go down. I like the old days where you killed, they took you out and hung you in public and that was the end of you. Criminals know the system is overpopulated and they will be out in no time and living on the state with tv, weights, basketball and hanging with the guys till they get paroled so why should they fear the justice system. Lord they should be glad I'm not a judge or I'd be called the hanging judge for sure. I'm sick of these people preying on society. A friend of mine had some girl who she was 18 on the computer and sent HIM a naked picture; her parents found it and he got 20 yrs. for that while these people who murder and rape and molest children get like 5 or 8 years. This sentence stinks. But.....I suspect the system worked as intended, which means the judicial system in cases like these stinks as I have said for as long as I was able to reason intelligently. He should serve at least 35 years which means his original sentence should be about 60 years.
If you are bothered by paying for the incarceration of these insects, then I could be convinced that execution is the answer. The money saved could be well spent on deserving American citizens.
I will never understand our court system, 23 years? She is dead, forever and ever. He deserves the death penalty. If he lived in California he would have gotten 8 years and 2 years off for good behavior. In this case there is no justice. I am not sure what $29 mil will do for her family, not much im sure. Money will never cure grief. The whole thing is sad, two lives completely lost.

She is dead.
