Subscribe to RSSPresident Obama issued an executive order Friday tasking the Department of Veterans Affairs to expand its suicide prevention and mental health services.
Under the order, VA is expected to increase its veteran crisis line by 50 percent by the end of the year; ensure that a veteran in distress is given access to a trained mental health worker in 24 hours or less; and launch a national 12-month suicide prevention campaign to educate veterans about available mental health services.
The order reinforces some initiatives that VA has already undertaken.
In April, VA announced that it would hire 1,600 mental health clinicians to meet surging demand, and the order instructs the agency to use loan repayment programs and scholarships, among other strategies, to recruit those professionals by June 2013.
The order also asks VA to create at least 15 pilot projects in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services to address unfilled mental health staff vacancies and long wait times. The pilots, to be created within 180 days, will test the effectiveness of partnerships with community and rural health clinics as well as substance abuse treatment centers.

Previous estimates have indicated that at least 6,000 veterans died by suicide annually in recent years; data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that about 18 veteran suicides occur daily.
VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki praised the order in a statement released Friday morning, saying that the agency would work to implement its requirements immediately.
"History shows that the costs of war will continue to grow for a decade or more after the wars have ended," Shinseki said. "The mental health and well-being of our brave men and women who have served the Nation is the highest priority for the Department of Veterans Affairs."

The order targets not only immediate concerns about mental health care staffing and suicide prevention measures, but also long-term goals in understanding the science behind combat-related psychological wounds like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Along with the Department of Defense and other federal agencies, VA is directed to develop a research plan that includes efforts to better diagnose and treat PTSD and TBI.
The president delivered the order Friday as part of his visit to Fort Bliss in Texas, which marks the two-year anniversary of the end of combat operations in Iraq. He addressed troops at the Army post and held a roundtable discussion with service members and their families.

Having been around familiy members returning from war I think it is really fear of change and the future. The past has some negatives which they used as an excuse for depression but the deep down anxiety was "now what"? When I call into the VA for to set hospital appointments you get a suicide message if you are put on hold. Call this number, ect if you feel like hurting yourself. Very spooky the first time you hear it.
I wish all the Vets well and think President Obama is being very proactive to give needed assistance. It is very sad for the lame political party comments above good Americans. What a joke some people are and just shallow brainwashed hateful.......

This has been a long time coming and the length of time that our returning troops have to wait to get counseling is abysmal! I know a young man who came home from the Gulf War who committed suicide and it was connected to the war. I have a brother-in-law who served two tours in Viet Nam who suffers from PTSD who is just now getting help. I have another friend with the same problem. These men put their lives on the line for their country and get treated like crap when they come home. Shame on us and yay for the President.

Totally agree Witesoxfan. He has almost four years to be concerned about our returning soldiers and nada. With this an election year, this executive order does not surprise me at all.
For all of you who want to yell or call me a t-bagger, my husband has done two tours and if he needed any extra help through VA, it would have been expensive and not all of those health professionals are all that good.

Perhaps you should start telling it yourself first. President Obama has done considerably more for military members, their families and veterans than the man who sent them to war in the first place. To the best of my knowledge (I've been a veteran for 40 years and work with veterans), the only thing that Bush did for veterans was to remove category 8 veterans from VA health care elegibility...not much of a benefit!
Sorry 'ol_doc', but your ignorance is showing. The Veterans Eligibility Reform Act of 1996 was what established the criteria for eligibility or ineligibility. It provides for the Secretary of Dept of Veterans Affairs to certify to congress, annually, what categories of veterans we can afford to treat. Mr Shinseki has had ample time to expand it.

To address this issue however: The reason there are 16 suicides per day (according to at least one source I've seen) among wounded Veterans is the "cocktail" of 4 psychotropic drugs they have been handed by the DOD/ VA doctors. Nobody seems to point out to them that on all four of those packages, the FDA puts a "black box" warning for increased possibility of SUICIDE. Think about it! Let them off themselves ( since they didn't have the good sense to die with honor on the battlefield like a good soldier is expected to do) so they are then "off the books" . No more expensive therapies and long term care. Put them 6 feet under where they are in nobodys way.....That's "business" as usual. The corpse of a soldier ( according to the Generals,,, who die quite rarely in the battlefield....) is a thing of pride. With a mind set like that, what on earth would you expect to be the outcome?
There is a therapy, that is expensive, in terms of time but effective and DOD rejects it out of hand. I think those kick backs the Pharmaceutical companies are handing out( yes, I used to be an advisor to the SG of Army, Air Force and navy) go a L O N G way in keeping our wounded warriors on these meds..... get them coming and going! Yet another rip off, yet another scandal from the Pentagon. Veteran or not, knowing first hand what it's like to have a family member commit suicide is on of the worst possible feelings ever. I think these first initial comments are awful. In my opinion, suicide is a selfish act where the person committing the act isn't thinking about the long term effects their action is going to have on those closest to them.
Suicide is a permanent result for a hopefully temporary problem. And I wish that people would recognize warning signs and help their loved one get the help that they deserve, or better yet that the person feeling suicidal will seek the help themselves.

I'm sorry for your loss as well, but I hope if I happen to ever reach that point my family will respect my decision. I agree with President Obama and hope much more can be done to prevent suicide, but suiciders in general should be treated with more dignity than to be branded as selfish.

Where in the constitution is the term Executive Order? The term is not mentioned in the US Constitution. The Executive Orders have been going since 1789. In those days congress could defund a program or order. Since 1983 it has become more difficult over turn an EO since congress now has to pass a law which the president would veto and then congress would need a 2/3 vote to over turn. That is virtually impossible.
In this case, I don't think anybody in congress would not agree that we need to give our veternans any help they need. Better late than never.

What in the name of God are you talking about? Denied benefits because they are over 60? You sir, know nothing! Under President Obama the number of presumptive conditions related to Agent Orange have increase and the specific stressor documentation for PTSD has decreased. Most of those effected are over 60 years old. I work with Veterans every day dealing with the Veterans' Administration. There are NO denials based on a veteran over 60 years of age.

So now this lady from the West Los Angeles VA responsible for the huge cover up on the lease of VA buildings at the North Hills VA to a private firm for drug and alcohol addicts at $343,000.00 per apartment unit and the awarding of the construction contract will come up. There is lifetime VA property deed that states clearly that land is to be used for Veterans only! Now she must be stopped and this project must halted to accommodate the Presidents order! HOORAY!!
Might the suicide rate have something to do with how unprepared our young folks are to face life and death situations. Many/some go into the military because they do not have the skills to make it in the world. One would think after seeing the worst of the world and meet the worst people , would find life here something they want to enjoy. That was my experience after the Army duty.

Thank you for your service. I do have some ideas as to what might be more relevant as to reasons for increased suicide: Imagine you experience multiple deployments (up to 6 or more)? Imagine you serve as a Reservist or National Guardsman and have to try to earn a living between deployments. Imagine your family leave you after your 3rd or 4th deployment because you had changed into someone they feared? Imagine just surviving on unemployment until your next deployment to combat? Imagine finally receiving your DD 214 to find no decent paying jobs. Imagine employers afraid to hire you because they fear psychiatric problems. Imagine deep prolonged depression, an attempt to be seen at the VA and being told no one can see you for the next 60 days.
The majority of service members returning from deployment deal with some but not all of these situations. But having worked with returning OEF/OIF veterans for the past 7 years, and as a retired SFC myself, I take this situation very seriously and I applaud Obama for his assistance.

Look what war does to our vets. They will never be the same and this country doesn't do enough for our veterans, when they come home from war. I'm waiting on a arterial bypass, and I am in so much pain, I even think about killing myself, just to be without pain. It gets old. It's just like our veterans coming back from war with, much more than pain to deal with. And if it wasn't for that ass-hole George Bush who lied to all of us about the war in Iraq, some of these vets wouldn't have to go with what they do. This country doesn't care enough about our veterans, the poor or the elderly. They only care about money, the deficit, and giving the rich tax breaks. This country just plain sucks.
I appreciate what our vets have been thru and am saddened by some of the comments I have been reading. I agree with your arizonaron69, our vets are not appreciated. I worked as a CNA at our vet home in Indiana and was so ashamed at the state of the building. The building needs so much improving done to it. After I left because of an injury, I heard that they finally closed the floor I was working on because of asbestos problems. There are roaches in that building in the basement where the linens are kept that are bigger than a quarter. I used to cry at night when I worked there. There aren't enough CNA's working on a shift to take care of the residents properly. I got in trouble for taking time to talk to a resident and listen to them. It is a shame that they have to be treated this way. I wish President Obama could see the conditions they have to live with daily. Why would our boys want to come home to this. It is disgraceful. This was in 2002-2003. I am tempted to erase this so nobody sees this but it is wearing on my soul and people need to know. I know there is an empty hospital in our town that would be a much better place for these poor residents. Hope someone reads this and looks into it. As for the elderly and the poor, I truly feel Obama does care for them and has been trying to help, but whenever he does it gets voted down. If people could just work together for a common cause instead of trying to complete some political agenda and make the president look bad our country might be a place that our vets and everyone else would want to live in and be happy. Just sayin......
Finally. Any veteran, Democrat or Republican or else, who served America deserves the best of care.
Bring our people home!!! Quit sending them out OVER AND OVER AND OVER again..... Get them the help they need instead of patching it up and sending them BACK...WHY WHY WHY is it so hard to see what is it is that is being done to these people????
1.... The NEW Rules of Engagement virtually TIE our soldiers hands so they can NOT do their job...(turning them into glorified security guards)
2.... War creates unhealthy psychological and physiological changes...Anxiousness, sleeplessness, Nervousness, and BOREDOM....add that all together and what do you get???
3.... We keep sending our people for repeated tours...Many get lots of tours I personally KNOW 4 people who are on their 4th time over.... Why?
4.... Many of those with repeated tours don't know if they are getting sent back to hell to sit and do nothing, not knowing if it their turn to get shot this time....
Again...bring our people home, there is NOTHING positive about us being there. We are torturing our own people by doing this....And now our President has to Order our VA to do something about helping these Vets instead of helping all of them right now.... really??? Let's help them all and BRING THEM HOME!!!!
