Cops: Man steals LAPD car, crashes into Starbucks in Los Angeles

A 25-year-old man is in critical condition in Los Angeles, Calif., after he allegedly stole a police cruiser and smashed it into a Starbucks coffee shop. NBCNews.com's Al Stirrett reports.

A man who stole a police car in South Los Angeles and crashed it into a Starbucks coffee shop Friday has lost his legs, according to local media reports.

The 25-year-old suspect, who was the only person injured in the crash, was hospitalized in critical condition, according to NBCLosAngeles.com. He also lost both of his legs in the accident, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. near 1298 South La Brea Ave., police said. Aerial video provided by NBCLosAngeles.com showed vehicle wreckage and damage to the front of the Starbucks. A light pole and another vehicle also were wrecked, the Times reported.

"That was the most damage I've ever seen to a black-and-white police car in 24 years," Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Andrew Smith told NBCLosAngeles.com. "That was an unbelievable scene of carnage. The engine was out, the transmission was in the road, and the hood was down street. The car was a complete and total wreck."

Officials shut down La Brea Avenue near San Vicente Boulevard during the investigation.

The car was stolen as two officers were conducting an investigation at Adams Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, NBCLosAngeles.com reported. The officers left the keys in the police vehicle, according to police.

The suspect, who might have grand-theft auto charges, drove away at "high speed" in the cruiser, heading north on La Brea Avenue. Officers did not pursue him, police told NBCLosAngeles.com.

"We're unsure why he took the car," Smith told NBCLosAngeles.com. "Whether it was a joy ride or what. Apparently he saw the police car there, the keys were in it, and he made a bad choice."

"Many officers leave their keys in the car so they can jump back in and get out of a situation quickly," Smith told NBCLosAngeles.com.

Yes, this would qualify as Grand Theft Auto & Destruction even when the keys were left in for a donut shop run. Bad boys, bad boys whatcha gonna do when de saw your legs in two, bad boys....

Too bad it didn't take everything between his legs, too, thereby removing him from the gene pool.

You know the lawyers are going to blame the police for entrapment in this one. They for got to put that sign up about the car having the keys in it and warning him that stealing the car could result in the loss of one or both legs if he crashed it into a Starbucks, because Starbucks does not carry proper police donuts!

woah, down there crashing into a starbucks is probably equal to defiling a place of worship. The fact that it was a cop car would be the cherry on this iced mocha fat free latte cake ;)

Sounds like he was suicidal to me, poor Baby. Notice that some folks want us to think the world is ravaged by crime and criminals in the streets, but cops typically leave their keys in the cars all over the Nation.....things that make you go "hmmmmmmmmmm......".

In addition to Grand Theft Auto charges he should be charged with being massively stupid.... Stealing a cop car............ Duh.

And, if he gets any jail time, as soon as he gets out he's probably going to sue the city to make their squad cars wheelchair accessible and demand that they all have disabled parking stickers on their windshields.

Terrible loss though and at state expense he's going to get artificial limbs because the negligent police officers left the keys in their car.

Sad never-the-less, that was a nice rig.

At least Karma got him a little bit but only took one of his legs off. I hope the Basturd suffered - but probably not since his nerves were severed when his one leg flew off.

I am wondering how in the heck he did not bleed out. Probably some dumba$$ good Samaritan stopped the bleeding and saved this worthless, low life scum bag.

Probably on dope and higher than a kite and most certain he is Black because if he was White, Hispanic or Asian that would have been reported. Maybe he is some well known person's son and that is why his identity has been kept secret for so long.

LAPD ON CAMERA - they get there to help the guy, who was thrown from the vehicle and he is fighting with them. They should have shot him in the head a few times to make sure he was dead to save taxpayers a lot of money. Had ever legal right to do so since he was fighting with them but since he was probably Black and they knew they were on cameras - they did not shoot him. FNG RACISM AGAINST ALL OTHER RACES and even more so if it turns out he is the son of someone who things they are special and so is their son. Yep, he is special now, missing a leg.

FNG worthless POS would have been up on his feet and running away if his one leg was not severed. Thanks Be To God for that. One that did not get away. Of course now, the hardworking, decent taxpayers are going to be paying his medical bills, therapy, wheelchairs, artificial leg, vehicle with hand controls, etc. Over a million dollars in a year or so and a bullet only costs a couple of bucks.

I agree with the other poster above - should have lost his family jewels so he could not bred like a rabbit. At his age, I am sure he has a dozen bastard kids already. All being supported by decent, hardworking taxpayers.

Prosecutor's Office better charge him with grand theft auto if he lives and let a jury send him to prison till his work wages pays for the police cruiser and all damage he caused and his medical bills. But being black and in LA, I am sure they will let him off even though his rap sheet is probably 50 pages long.

To RICHARD MORDHORST and other bleeding hearts - It is OK for you to have your opinion but let others voice their personal opinions and you attack them. Well this is my personal opinions and I could care less what you think and this is what I think of you -

First in another Post you say " fvck th chinese" - yes I cleaned up your word for you - SO YOU HATE ASIANS but love worthless Black gangbangers. That means you are either married to one or your kids or grandkids are married to a scumbag gangbanger or you are a FNG one yourself and using a photo of a White Man as your own.

You and others like you are Fng Nuts and are the ones who need Psychiatric Help and confinement for taking the side of a useless, doper criminal, driving at high speeds down city streets not caring if he hit a kid or any person crossing a street or walking on the sidewalk, etc. If this was later in day, he would have killed several people. But yet you have sympathy for him. Go live with these worthless POS.

One reason why I never get upset when dopers or gang bangers or terrorists are killed or die because 9 times out of 10 they are worthless scum bags of society AND I do not care what their color or religion, etc. is.

And Yes, I would refuse to render aid or even call for help - for people, who in my opinion were or are gang members. That is why I love Tattoos and those who dress a certain way - so much. These DUMBA$$E$ have their gang names and symbols all over their bodies or have their bandanas or other special clothing on - so it makes it easy to know which ones to ignore and just leave there to either live or die on their own and to let God decide if they live or die. Not my call. And I know large percentage of others feel the same way as I do. Especially the Great Police Officers who arrive on scenes and in areas with no cameras, POS like this one would be left to make it on his own a few minutes. Cops can trip and fall in all that mess where they cannot render aid right away.

My State of residency no longer has a Good Samaritan Law because - after a doctor and firefighter were killed - when they were off duty and stopped to help a criminal injured in an accident - the State got rid of that stupid law in a special session called just for that. Best money this State ever spent. Police Officers also do not have to render aid unless they are also State Licensed EMTs or Paramedics and current on all procedures and they are not putting their lives in danger - Which is all in their own personal opinion.

IN THE STATE WHERE MY RESIDENCY IS - NO ONE HAS TO HELP ANYONE OR EVEN CALL FOR RESCUE OR ASSISTANCE, ETC. AND ALSO - NO ONE CAN SUE ANYONE ELSE WHO DECIDES TO TRY AND RESCUE THEM OR TRIES TO HELP THEM.

WARNING TO CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS - BUT IN CALIFORNIA - the decent citizens need to be getting their Good Samaritan Law changed because even though there is NO DUTY to rescue another person, unless they are a child, spouse or other family member, etc. and you MUST try and save them = if you do decide to rescue anyone - "to provide help following an accident is to risk civil liability" meaning the POS who you just saved can sue you and you will lose everything you own and your wages garnished for life that is if you are not sentenced to prison if the person dies or becomes handicapped and blames it on you for pulling them out of a vehicle that could explode or is already on fire or is sinking.

Google - Van Horn vs. Watson and read that case. Torti (Watson) was in a different vehicle and pulled her good friend Van Horn out of the another vehicle she was in that wrecked. Torti went to the wrecked vehicle and pulled her friend out because she feared the car was going to catch on fire or explode. Quoting an Attorney - "There's no immunity, at least in California, for pulling someone out of a burning car." Van Horn sued saying she did not need assistance until rescue arrived and she blamed the injury to her vertebrae she received in the accident - that left her permanently paralyzed - on her friend Torti (Watson) and this POS Van Horn - another doper who had been mixing dope and alcohol - sued and won. It is all about MONEY people, you must remember that before ever helping anyone. Leave them be unless you want to lose everything you own and make for life.

PEOPLE LEAVE PEOPLE TRAPPED IN VEHICLES, etc. at accident scenes alone. You have no way of knowing who is a criminal or not and you could be shot and killed by the criminal, etc. or sued - I am glad this POS Van Horn is permanently paralyzed. If I was Torti (Watson) I would make sure this POS Van Horn saw me running and jumping, riding a bike etc. every chance I could and have others tell her they saw me out dancing and dating, etc.

Nope, just tired of folks using trite, stale, and ridiculous jokes, and thinking that they are clever and witty. Just think---any story about cops, and eventually the donut analogy comes out; it is not original, nor clever. Just stupid.

Bubba you did spell "there" correctly, the problem is the first usage in your sentence should have been "they're" and the second one should have been "their" Bravo on knowing that "there" was one of the correct spellings of the word though.

This has got to be the worst case of "Reverse Joyride" I have ever seen and I've been driving a wrecker for many many years.

What a price to have to pay for this guys stupidity, I think the charges hes facing are going to be nothing to how his life has now changed forever and for what a stolen police car, what a loser.

I know personally what it feels like to be told you will never walk again after a bad accident and it sucks like you can't believe but I myself was way luckier than this guy and I didn't steal a thing.

The silver lining in all this is that no one else was injured by his actions.

I did get lucky myself, I was crushed by a bobcat loader bucket and I can now walk! So yeah, I'm a very happy camper you could say.

At least a thief has a chance god took his legs and taught him a lesson, now live and learn yours. This is the new form of stoning do not judge how God wish to punish people for stupidity. Just except it for you are it.

Richard - I think any pain and punishment a thief, criminal, thug or gangster gets is funny. I could care less about his "pain" or him surviving. I don't steal, rob or otherwise harm my fellow man, netiher should he. He gets hurt or killed matters not to me. Just another piece of scum off the planet. Save your preaching for the pulpit. Go read your bible and keep on believing in whatever God you pray to. The rest of us will keep on target practicing.
