Small earthquake jolts Beverly Hills, L.A.

LOS ANGELES -- A magnitude-3.2 quake hit Beverly Hills, Calif., before dawn on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of damage.

Beverly Hills police watch commander Sgt. Michael Publicker said his station got numerous calls from anxious citizens after the 3:26 a.m. PT (6:26 a.m. ET) quake.

"Every alarm in the city is going off," he said. Patrol officers had seen no signs of structural damage, Publicker added.

California’s earthquake 'swarm' unusual but not rare

An officer at the nearby West Los Angeles police precinct said there had been no calls about the quake.

The U.S.G.S. reported that the epicenter was one mile from West Hollywood and eight miles from Los Angeles Civic Center, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Damage has been reported after up to 70 earthquakes, including a 5.5-magnitude quake, shook Southern California over the weekend. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Arieus. Please, please read your History.

The Strongest Quake Recorded. was located between St Louis and Memphis. and it was felt half way across the Country. and it was to be recorded as 7.9.

Therefore. stronger vs 06 in San Fran. and 6.9 or there about in Alaska in 64. therefore, it there was another Quake between St Louis and Memphis. other cities as Little Rock, Indianapolis. New Orleans. Minneapolis, St Paul would feel the quake. no one knows if any damage. or any injuries. therefore, its not a tornado. there is no warning.

Also, last summer. there was a miner quake between Richmond and Boston. which Washington had to shut down. I was with a friend chatting in the Philly,. when the Quake happen. then the Rain Storm, where a-lot of people lost their houses.

yes. Quakes can cause Storms. as indicated, Study it. before, saying that only CA gets quakes. also, there was a bunch of quakes a couple of years ago., including Hatti. New Zealand. and Australia.

You should do the same. The San Andrea's Fault is 150 years long overdue for a good shaking in CA, and it's going to change the CA landscape when it decides to wake up, and it's been awaken...

Arieus, you know they have a timeline for the big one in Cali right? It's sometime between tomorrow and 10.000 years from now. And that big swarm of quakes a few days ago probably released enough tectonic pressure to delay it at least another year.

I think Santo-nino was referring to the Madrid Fault line. Where damage could be very massive out east of us. In the Midwest. And when the San Andreas hits. California is the most prepared. The building codes are much stricter out here. Especially after the Bay Area Quake. This 3.2 was nothing. Wait for a 7.0 or higher.

A 3.2 along the Madrid would cause more damage in the Midwest. Just due to the older buildings.

Hypothetical is right. I lived in Los Angeles from '64 thru '74 and the quakes and temblors actually do realease pressure on the fault. If you're paranoid about it, don't live there. Or, better yet, "Tie up 'de boat in Idaho."

This 3.2 was not an earthquake by CA standards, it was a minor temblor. The news media is great at blowing things out of proportion. People out here do not even blink at a 3.2. It takes something closer to a 4.5 for people to even pay any attention to it. Hell, we had several much larger than this (over 5) last weekend to the south of here (the south end of the Salton Sea) that caused far more shaking in this area than this 3.2 did.

@Santo-Nino - You need to get your facts straight, the 1964 Alaska quake measured 9.2, much stronger than the one you are talking about and the second largest ever recorded next to the 9.5 in Chile (Valdivia) in 1960.

@mj899 - Actually, the 1906 SF quake was estimated at between 7.7 and 7.9 in magnitude.

While there have been quakes estimated at being as strong as others on this list prior to 1900, there are no accurate measurements available so I am not listing them. The one mentioned by @Santo-Nino does not even come close to making the list. Here are the strongest quakes since 1900 (source USGS web site):

1 Chile - 1960 05 22 - 9.5
2 Prince William Sound, Alaska - 1964 03 28 - 9.2
3 Off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra - 2004 12 26 - 9.1
4 Near the East Coast of Honshu, Japan - 2011 03 11 - 9.0
5 Kamchatka - 1952 11 04 - 9.0
6 Offshore Maule, Chile - 2010 02 27 - 8.8
7 Off the Coast of Ecuador - 1906 01 31 - 8.8
8 Rat Islands, Alaska - 1965 02 04 - 8.7
9 Northern Sumatra, Indonesia - 2005 03 28 - 8.6
10 Assam - Tibet - 1950 08 15 - 8.6
11 Off the west coast of northern Sumatra - 2012 04 11 - 8.6
12 Andreanof Islands, Alaska - 1957 03 09 - 8.6
13 Southern Sumatra, Indonesia - 2007 09 12 - 8.5
14 Banda Sea, Indonesia - 1938 02 01 - 8.5
15 Kamchatka - 1923 02 03 - 8.5
16 Chile-Argentina Border - 1922 11 11 - 8.5
17 Kuril Islands - 1963 10 13 - 8.5

The Kardashians do not live in Beverly Hills; they live in Calabasas - about 25 miles away.

A 3.2 won't wake most Californians at the epicenter up from a light nap.

When I moved to Northern California in 1968, they said then that "The Big One" will hit within the next 30 years. The statement of "between tomorrow and 10,000 years from now" is about as accurate as it gets. The Loma Prieta quake of 1989, at 7.1, wasn't even close to being "The Big One".

There was no Richter scale in 1906; the best "guesstimate" of that quake is between 7.7 and 8.3; fire did far more damage than the quake itself.

Small or "cluster" quakes do not relieve tectonic pressure postponing or reducing future bigger quakes -- a very common myth. With thousands of quakes each year, there are still not nearly enough to "releave" anything.

At about 4000 a year, Alaska has more quakes than California.

Californian is one of the most prepared states for earthquakes. Building and infrastructure standards have REQUIRED extensive precautions and have continually been augmented for the last 50 years.

Californians don't worry about earthquakes because we know that one day, everything east of the San Andreas fault will fall into the Atlantic Ocean.

LMAO JustSayin. The other thing is that when fault moves in the south and moves in the north and the middle part doesn't move, then the middle is going to have to adjust isn't it. What fun that's going to be.

Faults don't move per se; plates do. A fault is the tentonic boundry between two plates. A single plate is not pulling itself north and south at the same time. In the case of the San Andreas fault, the Pacific plate is moving North; the North American plate is moving South.

It's interesting that Beverly Hills felt it and people called the police and car alarms were going off but in West L.A., nothing. Makes a difference when you are close to the epicenter and when it is shallow as mmj899 has said. People call police because they don't know if it was a quake or if a bomb went off some where.

When a good swarm starts here in Ca Like it did off the coast of Japan, then it is the time to take note.

As of now it kind of looks like it may be the beginning. However it is hard to know for sure as of this time.

Again, if you don't like earthquakes, move to a planet somewhere that doesn't have them. The power didn't go out, the roads weren't damaged, the TV still worked and there was still running water, yet several people STILL called the police. How insecure can a person be in that situation to actually do that?

In these small magnitude quakes all you feel is a jolt. It feels like a truck hit your house or a bomb went off. Especially if you're close to the epicenter. People call the police just to make sure. You would too if you're house moved sideways and alarms went off in your neighborhood.

I'm in Hollywood right now on vacation; woke up around 3:25 for no apparent reason. Now I know why. I used to live out here and was often woken by small quakes in the middle of the night. You can be marginally aware of them, but by the time you actually wake up, they're over. Sometimes it's the sound more than the actual shaking. A few of the smaller ones can be kind of loud.

Why is this even considered news? An earthquake in CA? The biggest quake known to man in this country had the Mississippi River running North. None are as dangerous as when the Yellowstone super volcano erupts. It will take out about 1/3 of this country. And big deal that a quake is overdue. In geological time 1000 years is nothing. Want to worry, think of Fort Detrick and what is kept there.

Because it was Beverly Hills. The media thinks people care what happens to the houses of the rich and dumb.

The only reason it was reported is because it happened in "Beaver-ly" Hills. Maybe all the Kardashians jumped on their "tramp" - o-line at the same time.

I don't know if Obama, Bush, or Sandusky is to blame, but San Andreas is denying all responsibility, saying "It was not my fault!"

Glad I don't live in California. Michigan seems to be stable geographically (except for 85% unemployment).

Earthquakes in one place after another. There will be great earthquakes. These words were written by an accurate

book and everything that it stated came true at it appointed time.

The only thing not safe about CA is their government. Nice weather, but glad I got out years ago. As far as earthquakes, they can happen anyplace.

Maybe it will "shake up" the many liberal left wing idiots who want all of us to share our money with the lazy losers in this country.
