Commander: Navy SEALs reveal too many secrets

The Navy SEAL's controversial account of the Bin Laden raid goes on sale today. NBC's Danielle Leigh reports.

Copies of a book by a former Navy SEAL titled "No Easy Day" are seen on display at a bookstore in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday.

Updated at 9:33 p.m. ET: On the same day that a book about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden was officially released, the Commander of Naval Special Warfare Command sent a letter to all members of the Special Operations community warning them to stop releasing details about their secretive world.

"We do NOT advertise the nature of our work, NOR do we seek recognition for our actions," wrote the commander, Rear Admiral Sean Pybus. “Today, we find former SEALs headlining positions in a Presidential campaign; hawking details about a mission against Enemy Number 1; and generally selling other aspects of NSW training and operations.  For an Elite Force that should be humble and disciplined for life, we are certainly not appearing to be so.”

He was referring, in part, to “No Easy Day,” written under the pseudonym Mark Owen, which gives a firsthand account of the killing of the al-Qaida leader on May 2, 2011.

Related: Ex-Navy SEAL sought advice before publishing book, lawyer says

“No Easy Day” is not the only problem, a senior U.S. military official told NBC News. In fact, the official said, it was the “the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

The official said that a recent movie starring actual Navy SEALs and even the growing number of "SEAL" workout videos have all added up to too much information about the community out in the public arena.

Over the next few weeks, Pybus will speak to senior leaders about how to stop the trend of former SEALS profiting from their time in uniform.

Also Tuesday, Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said the book contains “sensitive and classified information,” although he refused to say what in the book is considered classified.

The firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden has climbed to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

Little said at this time the Pentagon would not attempt to halt the sale of the book on U.S. military installations. U.S. officials told NBC News the Pentagon appears powerless to stop the public distribution of the book.

Little repeated the claim that by writing the book, the former Navy SEAL is in "material breach" of a non-disclosure agreement that requires him to submit the book or transcript to the U.S. military for prepublication review if it contains classified material. In a letter to the Pentagon's Chief Counsel, Jeh Johnson, the former SEAL's attorney claims his client was not required to put the book through the prepublication process.

Related: Ex-Navy SEAL says book on bin Laden raid about 9/11, not politics

A senior Pentagon official, however, claims Owen violated his obligations on three counts. He failed to submit the book for pre-publication review, published classified information and revealed sensitive information about the SEAL's "tactics and techniques" in taking down bin Laden.

Officials at the Pentagon say it's not clear the Justice Department will pursue criminal charges against Owen, but suggest the U.S. government could seize all money paid to the former SEAL and the publisher, Dutton, under the non-disclosure agreement signed by Owen before he left the Navy.

How funny....The Obama administration upset about someone leaking classified information...LOL More likely the book talks about the fact Obama stoped the raid multiple times because he was afraid of political backlash and was scared it would hurt him politically... Please.. Back to Kenya in November you go Barrack.

What an interesting debate. We’ve all heard Obama say on numerous occasions that HE killed Bin Laden. Now we have a Navy SEAL that has come forward to provide us with a first person account of what really went down. Maybe Mr. Obama can provide us with a little more detail to back up his claim. Maybe HE should write a book, one based on reality. I can’t wait to read the chapter about how MOMMY Valerie Jarrett told him to keep sucking his thumb until SHE decided it was ok for the SEALS to risk THEIR lives. Now MOMMY and Barack have ordered the Pentagon to declare that there was classified information in the book. I haven’t read the book yet but I suspect that the only classified information Obama and MOMMY Jarrett are concerned about is that Obama is being exposed for the timid little man he is. There was a time when men would settle their differences face to face, but then I’m dating myself. We are in a new age. The Obama age. Ok Mr. President, go ahead and send MOMMY out to defend you.

Hey! You guys leave Tim alone. I mean, after all, OBUMMA gave that movie company a free pass to the Pentagon to gather information for a movie about it to come out just in time for the elections. I personally believe it was an Osama bin Laden look-alike since there was such a big hurry to dump him in the ocean. It was said that the DNA matched...well, I did a little reading about DNA and learned it can be manufactured in a laboratory.

What I've heard is that another SEAL Team was offered the job prior to SEAL Team 6 accepting the job. The Obama Administration has sought to deal with Osama bin Laden. How many times has the U.S. hit Pakistani territory over the past 4 years....afraid of political backlash...come up with a cohesive argument!

You really don't want to go there! Its been reported on every station but FOX that Arizona law forbid the DOJ from nabbing the bad guys. The Jan Brewer law allows anyone to buy as many guns as they want, walk into the parking lot and turn them over to anybody. One case had an indigent man buy thousands of dollars worth of guns in cash, walk out the door and turn them over to other people. The indigent man the just walked away. Arizona law blocked the DOJ from arresting or detaining the gun runners.

This guy was one of the most highly trained soldiers in our military... lots of money went into his training. He also had a top secret security clearance which means he is supposed to keep his big mouth shut regarding military operations. He needs to be stripped of rank and jailed as a traitor for writing this book. He just lost all respect from me for the job he helped accomplish in killing the world's biggest terrorist. He wants everybody to know who he is... what a jerk.

Obama and the entire government would sell any soldier from any branch of the service down the river in a heartbeat if it suited their political agenda. In fact it's been done many times. And yet he hides behind a phony name. He knows he isn't the bad @ss he was with his team 6 or was he the one hiding in the helicopter while everyone else was doing the raid? I doubt his team mates will be able to come forward and dispute his story without putting them selves and their families in danger. Believe it or not?

I still have my doubts that the body convieniently dumped at sea is that of Osama Bin ladin. We simply do not have the technology to process DNA evidence that quickly. I also have the sneaky suspision that Obama found out that Bin Ladin had in fact been killed in 2001 as rumors had claimed but was covered up to continue the war on terror. Bush can't say anything and Obama knows it if this is true. Just speculation. Without a body to have identified by his own followers what proof do we have this was actually Osama ?

As far as this seal and other violating their oath of secrecy it demonstrates where we are going as a country. Our honor as a people is in decline. Our word means nothing. Greed lead this guy to expose tradesecurity secrets for profit regardless that it would jeapordize us all if we can carry out these operations as well now. He is not concerned his his fellow Americans safety but only the dollars he will make . he deserves a full court marshal and sent to prison for life. he placed all of ours in peril.

Tim - Robert is correct in saying Barry never said HE killed bin Laden. It was his minions in the DNC and Lame Stream Media that are giving him credit for it. He only "looked at all the intelligence" and sent them in right away. Yeah, right, just like when he waffled until the SEALS took the initiative and shot the Somali Pirates. (I wonder if he's apologized to the Somali Pirates yet?)

I guess the SEAL was wrong to write the book since it had not been an approved leak by the Obama Reelection Team/Administration. You know, the ones that the Just Us Department can't seem to find the statue that the Administration violated when leaking info to the press.

If that isnt giving away way to much info then i dont know what is. Obama himself put a target on every seal team 6 member. I think he should be tried for treason and sent away for good for endangering their lives.

When the best you can do is mock Obama's name with some retarded attempt to be witty, it really is time to get off the f*cking internet, dude. Instead of clever, you come looking pathetically desperate.

What I find annoying is the blatant hypocrisy that some people show. You'll blame him, and only him, for every f*cking bad or wrong thing that happens in this country, yet flat out refuse to give him credit for anything positive he had a hand in. If those SEALs had died during this mission, you know for a fact you'd stand there blaming Obama for it and you are full of sh*t if you say you wouldn't. So, sorry, but in my book, he gets a 'job well done' along with everyone else involved in killing that bastard.

Lastly, if Obama really leaked information that badly, don't you think the asshat Republicans would already have impeachment proceedings in the works? They are just salivating at the mouth in hopes he f*cks up bad enough that they can take him down.

Loose lips sink ships, this book is treasonous. This IDIOT should be charged with treason and put in solitary for life. I don't care if bin laden was shot in the head, chest or ass, I don't care if he was beaten to death, I don't care if the Seals cut off his balls and laughed at him and pissed on him while he bled to death, it doesn't matter. What matters is this Seal has broken his oath and divulged secret information that may or may not threaten our country's security and/or operational information and/or operational tactics. He does not have the character to be a Seal. If he gave up info this easy for money, what kind of info would he give up during interrogation if captured. He is a national disgrace.

Obama revealed nothing by saying it was Seal team 6 it could have been team 22or 15 or1 or12 or any other number, he did nit divulge personal info on their members, and who other than top brass knows if Seal team 6 even exists, it could have been Seal team epsilon or theta or gamma for all we know.

Clint Eastwood said that at the RNC. That is if you were paying attention with your ears and brains. Somebody wake me when the Republican Party is the conservative party, again.

No difference whatsoever between Assange and this Navy Seal. Both should be thrown in jail forever. And the money should go to the families of the soldiers who get killed because of their stupidity.

Chris - "What I find annoying is the blatant hypocrisy that some people show. You'll blame him, and only him, for every f*cking bad or wrong thing that happens in this country..." The same could be said for the Dems and Bush. Obama has blamed him for everything since he took office. He's been there now going on 4 years, when is he responsible for anything that goes wrong? He sure is first in line to take credit when it goes right.

He deserves all the credit in the world for unleashing the SEALS. He deserves NONE of the credit for the actual operation. His administration has been leaking info about the operation to make him look good, so why is he so concerned about this book? (You can demand proof of the leak, but I do believe it has been proved to both parties that there is a leak and it is being investigated) The story has been changed several time by the Administration, from bin Laden had a gun to not having a gun, from his wives rushing the SEALS to them being out of the way. Why not just tell the truth the first time? Had this been Bush, the networks would have been all over it.

And I find it hilarious that you would complain about making fun of a name. After all the juvenile name calling at Palin, Bush, Romney, Ryan, McCain, Cain, Trump, Newt, Limbaugh, at all the rest, I would have figured you folks would have developed a thicker skin. But, no, call the Chosen One Barry just once and you folks will cry like an infant with a full diaper. Go up, or a pair.

He needs to be stripped of rank and jailed as a traitor for writing this book. He just lost all respect from me for the job he helped accomplish in killing the world's biggest terrorist. He wants everybody to know who he is... what a jerk.

Let's forget about conspiracy theories, whether they dumped Osama or not, if it was really him, whether Obama hesitated multiple times to carry out the mission, who cares? The belief is that Osama is dead... that's a GOOD thing.

Several people have indicated that this guy has committed a crime, some suggest he should be tried for treason and others say he should be stripped of his rank and ousted from the military. Should we hold the White House and the President to the same standard? The movie "Seal Team 6" was guided by the WH. They movie director was given access to classified information and the leader of "Seal Team 6" was revealed to the movie makers. Many of the so called secret "tactics" will be shown, all compliments of briefings by the WH.

"These documents, which took nine months and a federal lawsuit to disgorge from the Obama administration, show that politically connected filmmakers were given extraordinary and secret access to bin Laden raid information, including the identity of a SEAL Team 6 leader, said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

A big problem is that the world shouldn't haven't even known about this covert operation, let alone it was Seal team 6 that carried it out. This information was immediately divulged by the WH as soon as it was apparent the mission was a success.

So does it boil down to motivation? What would Owen have to gain from this? He risked everything he worked for in his career to write this book, including jeopardizing his retirement. He has been outed, which exposes his family and himself to injury or death. He is being scrutinized by the DOD and could face criminal charges. There's no indication this was politically motivated by him. Could it possibly be that he wrote it for the reason he stated "that he wanted to set the record straight".

You've got a person who is highly trained and put his life on the line in order for missions to be successful. He knows the truth of what happened that day. Maybe, after putting so much into training, serving his country, living on the edge of dying with every mission, he got sick of the exploitation happening and said "screw it, someone has got to tell the truth".

Now ask yourself if Obama had any motives for divulging top secret information to politically motived film makers? Who has exploited Osama's death?

But don't let the facts get in the way of a nice campaign narrative.

In case you're not aware of it, every President for the last 200+ years has blamed his predecessor for anything bad. It's the platform on which they run. You're not going to get elected by bragging about how great your opponent is/was. So don't attempt to say that this is Obama's signature action, 'putting the blame on Bush'. As for "every President for 200+ years" blaming their predecessor, you are really expecting us to believe this? Regan did talk about the economy under Carter, but after 3 years he was grown up enough to understand that what was happening was on him. He didn't continue it into the re-election campaign. GHW Bush sure didn't blame his predecessor. Clinton, for all his faults, especially being only the second Impeached President in our history, "manned up" and fixed what was wrong. GW Bush did not blame Clinton into his 4th year, either. Even when the 9/11 Commission stated we had opportunity after opportunity to get bn Laden, Bush was gentleman enough not to scream it like the current resident of the most expensive Government Housing in DC does.

      We already know;

      How the information regarding Bin Laden's whereabouts was obtained;

What type of "classified" aircraftwere used in the raid; (and, one of them crashed so it's skeletal remains were, no doubt, deconstructed by the Pakistani Air Force)

      The unit that conducted the raid;

The fact that the Pakistani's HAD to know he was there.....and we know several other "things" about the operation that Obama has talked about incessantly since it took place.

If this guy makes a buck off of this book....so be it! These guys put their hides on the line a lot more than we are aware-of, and as far as I'm concerned they deserve to be millionares for keeping us safe!

Further, we don't need a "self proclaimed" "Modern Day Progressive" in the White House.

Wait a minute, Mrs. Clinton threw a Bollywood campaign supporter under the HillaryWagon. Oh, another issue on the table.

Wait another minute, Mrs. Clinton went to Haiti to give away American taxpayer funds for re-building after the earthquake, and folks there are STILL living in tents. Guess who was there with open hands ? Mr. Clinton and his Global Welfare Company. Oh, another issue on the table.

It's pretty easy to guess who's behind this. This book is this year's Republican "swift-boating", this time directed at President Obama. The timing couldn't make it more obvious.

Let's hope the remnants of responsible journalism in America will do a better job this time in documenting truth, rather than remaining silent during a bald-face and dishonorable attack. The journalists were feckless in protecting the heroic wartime record and earned honors of Sen. John Kerry, in 2004, when the Bush/Republican smear campaign did this to him.

Americans should expect better than this sort of garbage during a presidential campaign.

You cannot swift boat a person if they keep their name clean. Obama has so many skeletons in the closet he cannot keep track of them. The SEAL tells the truth as opposed to the Truth of Lord Obama and the Pentagon puppets attempt to orchestrate obstructionist actions. If they had a leg to stand on they would have already arrested him.

Hillary will take the win in 2016. That aside, the military needs now to look at the case of this Seal sell out and close any and all loop holes this traitor to his command is, has and could possibly use to profit off his military experience as a Seal. Along with those laws they create to seal the breaches, instill mandatory prison sentences for those that attempt to breach them in the future. Besides, this Seal can say anything truth or fiction as he already knows that in order to correct his version would ensue other Seals to expose themselves and put themselves in breach of their oaths and he knows it just isn't going to happen.

You retards are clearlyh Re;pugs and Tea Party traitors, you are so eager to "believe" what this traitor writes to seldl books and to Swift Boat the Commander in Chief. In this case it is m ore shamless and disgusting because thaty/ytou are doing it to the President, and alkl of you creeps who think it's the truth this traitor is writing, you're a pack of fools. As someone pointed out the Navy/Pentagon can't corect any lies in his book because then they would be exposing "classified info" and further endangering other honorable people serving in the military. This bastard ought to be arrested and put before a firing squad. I don't think it's only money he's after, tho I'm sure hde won't donaqte it ALL to charity or even any of it despite h is proomises. I think it's to bring down the incumbent President by a dirty, well calculated timed attack on his honor. You crees and dirtbags got away with it re: John Kerry. And you are a fool to say no one can be "Swift Boated" if they don't have something to hide. Ever heard of LIES< dumbo? That's what our current Republican Party deals in, exclusively. LThey don't bring up embarrassing facts, they make them up. That's inexcusable and way outside the bounds of politics as we used to practice in America. We are in trouble, folks. There is nohonor among some of our military and they'd rather betray their country, have their buddies in arms murdered by telling or making up stories that only hurt our country. What a way to wion an election!!!Just like a banan republic where some in the miltary decide to make and unmake rulers. Well, you creeps ought to be kicked out of the American military and be sent to South America, pronto.

A body dumped at sea before any second hand party could verify it, then nearly all of the highly secret SEAL Team killed off in the news media and then here's the book.

The cat is already out of the bag. Once Obama revealed his "official" version of the Bin Laden raid as the POTUS secrets were already revealed by publicizing the action. Anybody going to prosecute the POTUS? Really? Maybe Eric Holder will.

The Seal could have written the book overseas under a psuedonym and it would still become a Best Seller on the American bookshelves. So why is there any big deal about somebody (who was there) telling what he performed or witnessed? Maybe his version is more believable than the POTUS?

The Pakistani Press noticed the raid and was asking questions and was going to go public on the International stage about THEIR version of what happened during the raid. The administration was faced with the choice between unchallenged supposition from the Pakistani press (which would have been grossly inaccurate even in the generalities) or making SOME details known in an effort to get the TRUTH out. No matter which party was in power, the decision would have been the same - to release some details so that we as a country could not be painted INTERNATIONALLY with incorrect stories. The Pakistani government was also asking questions and was going to publish their spin on what happened.

So which version did the people lobbing criticism want known? What would you all have said if the Obama Administration hadn't released the VERY limited information that it did and all we had was the Pakistani version (which everybody knows would have been inaccurate and anti-American)? Why do I get the feeling that this was a "dammed if you do, dammed if you don't" situation?

After all, Bush said that getting OBL wasn't important to him and it wasn't a priority...

Any Navy Seal should know by now that only the Obama administration is allowed to leak intelligence information. As if the landing of a drone in Iran was a mistake. The Obama administration has been on a quest to remove as many advantages the nation has held militarily by leaks or battlefield mishaps. But Seals are not allowed to do the same since they don't have Eric Holder covering their backs.

          @MUW,

RE: "Think About It differnet....Why Would These Magical Seals be involved in a Land Operation Anyway?"

A Navy seal is a US Navy special forces team member. Seal stands for Sea,
Air and Land. The members of this team are highly trained and are comfortable
working equally on water, air or land.

If you want to LEARN about the Seals start here ww.navyseals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=70544 or

ww.specialoperations.com/Army/Delta_Force/default.html and start LEARNING about all of our Special Forces genius.

The ONLY part of YOUR F%$KING Retarded A$$ Clown comment that was CORRECT is that it didn't start an Inter-Service "TURF" war. These are not little teenie boppers that are in our Special Forces. They are arguably our very Best and Brightest and are not mentally unstable Rambo's. I GUARANTEE that if either the Seals or the Delta Force is pinned down in a firefight where they are taking damage both would be thrilled to see the other team come to their rescue.

Now go outside and play or go to school.

Lions of Kandahar: The Story of a Fight Against All Odds by MAJOR Rusty Bradley & Kevin Maurer PUB: 06/28/2011 - "One of the most critical battles of the Afghan War is now revealed as never
before. Lions of Kandahar is an inside account from the unique
perspective of an active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces commander, an unparalled
warrior with multiple deployments to the theater who has only recently returned
from combat there.' - Excerpt "lifted" from the description

Operation Hotel California: The Clandestine War Inside Iraq by Mike Tucker & Charles S. Faddis PUB: 05/04/2010

My point being that there is a TON of information already out there. I also can't imagine No Easy Day giving out more "Secrets" - than The Red Circle's "How I Trained America's Deadliest Marksman. There is a boatload of other books and such on the subject as well.

You have no idea what you are talking about, and yet you seem to have yourself convinced that you do. When you see a SEAL, first you should thank them for what they do for you and this country. Secondly, never let one of them know that you were bad mouthing them or any other member of Special Forces. Just remember, people like the SEAL's are the reason you can hide behind your computer screen and pretend to be an expert. I love this one........ "Again Just because L stands for LAND that doesn't mean to use Sea Trained Fighters 300 miles inside of Pakistan! Just ain't done at least not before this event.......". HAHAHAHAHAHAHA You're silly.

Duuuuuh. Sell United States secrets for political purposes. Classified leaks by a Senior White House official:

                  • Classified leaks on the Osama bin Laden raid and made into a movie with the spotlight on Mr. Obama.
                  • Classified leaks on the Yemen Double Agent.
                  • Classified leaks on the airfield Israel intended to use for an Iranian strike.
                  • Classified leaks on the Doctor, now serving 33 years in prison, for providing information relating to Osama bin Laden's hideout.

"Leak you nations secrets for the world to see" and for political purposes coming straight from someone in this administration.

But watch, nothing will happen to the Senior White House official but the DOJ will target the SEAL for Federal Court proceedings.

No one is going to do anything to this hero. Seals have written books in the past and will continue to do so. The problem is the "what really happened" scenario. One version we got from pretty much everyone in the White House the day of and after. Now, we have the real story or as close as he can come without compromising tactics and the safety of his teammates. No one knows the story of how he "retired" with only 16 years in the Navy. No one knows why he left. Rumors are flying. Read the book, make your own judgements, but do not dare challenge the mans integrity and loyalty to this nation if you do not have what it takes to put on the uniform and put yourself in harms way to protect this nation. Crawl back under your rocks and live under the protection of these warriors and those like them.

Service men, FBI, and CIA agents have been writing books about their exploits since, well, forever.

There seems to be a lot of judgements made in these comments, when no one has read the book yet.

To bad that taking all the profits from the book won't hurt anyone except the families of dead service members or disabled veterans. That is where all the proceeds are reported to be going! And as for chastising seals for work out videos, the Navy is the pot calling the kettle black! On the MILITARY CHANNEL there is a show called B.U.D.S which follows a class of SEALS through their training. It was approved by the DOD and the Navy to be shot and aired to the public! Leave this "former" Navy SEAL alone. A bunch of idiots support Julian Assange for publishing information from classified US documents on the internet, yet others are condemning a real hero for telling the truth.

It's OK for the White House to leak information about the Iranian nuclear program and how exactly they disrupted it, but a book about the Bid Laden raid is out of bounds. I think they're BOTH out of bounds. Funny how the "media" has let the White House leakers off the hook, way way more important that this "Seal" book. Somebody in that West Wing war room is a traitor for leaking that information which should NEVER have been leaked, but the media is owned by the left, nothing new about that, with MSN leading the way.

Yes, the majority elected Barack Obama. Fortunately, our forefathers saw to it that there were three branches of government, not just the Executive branch. Because we don't have a Democratic (majority rule) government, rather a Republic (or representative) government, when it is perceived that one branch isn't doing their job, we can elect individuals to stop or limit the alternate branch(es). In 2009, like it or not, the people did not like the "job" Obama was doing and sent representatives in to do what they thought was correct, including and limiting Obama's policies from being enacted.

If I'm a traitor for being allowed to vote a representative in that will act/vote in a way I desire as a US citizen, then you've missed the entire point of why the founding fathers set our government up the way they did.

                    Propaganda.

There is no real classified info. This is a technique used to give this book credibility to hide the fact that Bin Laden has been dead for years prior to this. Plus Bin Laden was on the CIA payroll and 9/11 was obviously staged by anyone but Saudi's with box cutters. The trail goes on...

A contract is a civil, not criminal matter. The release of classified info is criminal, but not pnishable by death. It will be interesting to see if he is even charged, because most of what he has written has been released by the Obama administration already. But then that Seal (intentional misspelling) movie was wrong too. I guess it is now wrong and out of style to live up to you word and honor your sworn oaths.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. More of my anger is towards the people who buy this stuff. They should know better too. Let me read about it 25 or 50 years from now if I am still around.

Allowing "Mark Owen" to go unpunished will only jeopardize future mission and the lives of our troops. How can any mission be secret if everyone involved feels free to write a book and make a buck from it?

The government wants this to quietly go away, believe me. The Obama administration got out a little too far out in front of this when the raid first happened. They released too much information too quickly and now somebody is cashing in on the same public thirst for this stuff. If the government takes any action against the author (squashing the book's publication or seizing the profits) they are going to wind up in court and whatever they wanted to keep secret will come out into public view during the discovery phase of the trial. Of course the government will try to claim protection of classified material, it'll come out or there will have to be a mistrial. It's as simple as that.

If the government knows you have a few dollars, they will find a way to get them. They figure this seal will be easy pickings for easy money. Its all about the money. They know that cant get any from Obama.

Maybe it will help pay down the deficit. All the fools who would buy this book deserve to lose their money on an obscene travesty like this, then see it all go toward the deficit created by their heroes, the Republican adminjistration of GW BUsh and Co.

How can SEALs be expected to follow orders if they know that when theoperation is over the Administration will immediately leak the information if it supports them politically?

Get out of your fantasy worlds. The government cannot take the profits and there is a very good chance that the majority of the profits will go to the Seal Foundation and the families of his teammates who were lost in the helo crash last year. They will not prosecute and have all of this info drug out in court.

tom wise - Please it's " SEAL" All Caps, k?

Thank you tom wise. Most US Citizens (92%) NEVER Served and don't even know what that acronym even means (without looking it up).

Still waiting for President Obama to Full Fill his Verbal Contract (Campaign Promise) to decrease the numbers and lengths of Deployments of the 1% of US Citizens currently Serving in the US Military (note: of the 1% Serving the US Military, only 3% of the US Military are US Military Asymmetric Warfare (aka Special Warfare)). Candidate Obama's stated solution was instating the Selective Service and or Mandatory Compulsory US Military Service to Force the 92% of US Citizens that have Never Served as, "US Military Service is a Civic Duty" and "US Citizenship is not an Entitlement". Based on President Obama as Commander In Chief Ordered April 2009 Defense Budget Cuts of the USAF and USN, that means no cush USAF Jobs on a secure USAF Base, nor being 1,000s of miles at sea with the USN (safe with 3 hot meals a day), so all of these "Draftees" will be with the US Military Ground Combat Forces of the US Army and USMC (including women).

                        Lil' Debbie,

Stick to sh!t you know about, baking twinkies, cupcakes, etc..

By doing all this all they are doing is Publizing this book and making more want to buy.

This Administration should have just done what President Bush and other Presidents did with other Books, neither confirm nor deny. Then those books end up as either little known or eventually no longer in print. Like what we (not you Lil' Debbie, Sara Rose, President Bush, etc.) did:

Horse Soldiers: The Extraordinary Story of a Band of US Soldiers Who Rode to Victory in Afghanistan

                        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arxKhJIjIiY

Operation Hotel California: The Clandestine War Inside Iraq

(Unclassified) Facts versus fiction: 2002 (not 2003) Operation Hotel California was to allow us to eliminate the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban, Al Quada, Jihadists that escaped us at Afghanistan October 2001 (above, Horse Soldiers) after the 9/11 2001 Attacks and fled to Northern Iraq and became Ansar Al Islam. In 2002 President Bush pushed for a US Law to allow us to do so, US Law 2002 Iraqi War Resolution for us to conduct 2002 Operation Hotel California. Ansar Al Islam escapes us before we can completely eliminate them after the Fundamentalist Islamic Shia Republic of Iran gives them Islamic Sanctuary. Later the Mission was changed to accomplish President Clinton's US Law, H.R. 4655, "Iraqi Liberation Act of 1998" Justification Section 2 Weapons of Mass Destruction (NOT BUSH) and Section 3 as US Policy the Overthrow of President Hussein as US Military Operation Iraqis Freedom, 2002 we prepare for the 2003 US Military Conventional Warfare Forces Liberation of Iraq.

Of course most of you never read either of the above. Now let's talk about President Obama's Transparency Policy. Hypocrites during President Bush screaming Dubya, Shrub, Runt, etc. getting all upset foaming at the mouth yelling Disrespect, Treason when the News Media us "Mr. Obama" instead of President Obama. And during President Bush saying "Right To Know", "Freedom of the Press", "Constitutional Rights", "Transparency", blah, blah, blan, etc. and now look at all you hypocrites.

David457... we all get amnesia when we get exactly what we ask for and realize it 'ain't' what it cracked up to be. You hit the nail on the head. America SCREAMS for transparency, more info, blah blah blah and when they get it? The President is traitor among other vile words. The SEAL has NOTHING to with politics and everything to do with his obligations. When you are in the military you are apolitical EXCEPT when you PRIVATELY go to cast your vote. Whoever is in that office is your boss like it or not. They need to take his money.

It baffles me that the Pentagon and Department of Justice are crying foul about sensitive and classified info being in this book and available to the public, but does nothing to keep it getting into the public's hands. Weren't they the ones saying that such info would prove harmful for future missions and tactics? Now they are allowing the book to be available to anyone and taking the money. Something is seriously wrong here.

Coud it be they are afraid of Grover Norquist and the rabid slavering Karl Rove contingent from America's latest tratorous party, the Epublicans.

arizonaron69-3593297 there is quite a bit that was classified released about this mission already. I haven't read the book (yet), but any information about technique to and from the raid, the number of personnel, the make-up of the force, techniques used at the site, abilities to destroy equipment...I think you get the point, there's a lot that shouldn't be discussed, at all.

Opponents have a sense for our capabilities, tactics, equipment and personnel. But telling them the sequence of decisions related to actions and the results, gives the enemy not only pages out of your playbook (to use a sports analogy), but it reveals your thinking and decision making. Keep in mind that what you do, says a lot about what you can't do.

Maybe the bad guys think they know something, you telling them what they shouldn't know may confirm their suspicions or make them look at their weaknesses in a way they hadn't before. A quick story...the Americans developed a research platform...a supersonic bomber...the Valkyrie. The Russians saw it as a new threat and developed a whole air defense system that they couldn't afford to defend against a single bomber...it was a great deception, the US never intended to develop the B-70 into an actual delivery system, but if the Russian had known that, well you get the picture.

If anyone has to ask this question, any answer is beyond their scope of comprehension.

Knowing that we killed him isn't important. Knowing how we did, is.

First, the President can de-classify any information he wants to.

Second, even if the administration lets a movie be made doesn't mean that the tactics in the movie are what was used. The information given most likely does not include the specific classified info. That would not be necessary for a movie.

The President does not have the authority to declassify anything he pleases. Why would anyone think that? The President has a different set of administrative powers than most but is subject to US law. And why would anyone suggest that the movie being made with the help of the administration contains no classified info just because it "that would not be necessary for a movie"? Perhaps you could tell us what is in the movie? But I expect you probably have not read the book, either.

Would you have equal concern if the WH or Obama had leaked information? If yes, then you should be outraged, if not, then you're just playing politics by blaming Owens for something the WH has already done.

Politically connected filmmakers were given extraordinary and secret access to bin Laden raid information, including the identity of a SEAL Team 6 leader by the Obama administration

A transcript of a July 14, 2011, meeting between DOD officials, including Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Michael Vickers, Bigelow and Boal indicates that Boal met directly with White House officials on at least two occasions regarding the film

The July 14, 2011, meeting transcript also reveals that the DOD provided the filmmakers with the identity of a “planner, SEAL Team 6 Operator and Commander.”

A July 13, 2011, internal CIA email indicates that Bigelow and Boal were granted access to “the Vault,” which is described the CIA building where some of the tactical planning for the bin Laden raid took place.

Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Michael Vickers told Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Douglas Wilson and two other DOD communications staffers in a June 13, 2011, email that “[DOD] would like to shape the story to prevent any gross inaccuracies, but do not want to make it look like the commanders think it’s okay to talk to the media.” The email went on to say: “For the intelligence case, they are basically using the WH - approved talking points we used the night of the operation.” The talking points called the raid “a ‘Gutsy Decision’ by the POTUS,” adding that “WH involvement was critical.

Do you think the President should be ousted or charged with treason?

This is not about classified info, this is about selling out the Seals, and military to make a buck. So one guy is getting all the reward from an operation that took 100's of people over years.

I support going after this guy, he sold out the military and code of honor. His colleges hate him over it. His life has now entered a new chapter and he will wish it had not.

Good post, Bill. President Obama has never taken all of the credit for the taking out of Bin Laden. He uses the term "we" a lot and talks about how "we took out Bin Laden". I think he means the American people when he uses "we". I think that it irks a lot of people that President Obama finished what President Bush, for whatever reason, didn't.

That's an "Imperial We", Queens and Editors can be excused, but the President of the United States should refrain from including himself/herself into a particular military action. It puts the presidency in the award position of equating himself with the soldiers who actually participated. If the President claims we for everything that goes right, does he have to share in what goes wrong, I mean we lost a multimillion helicopter and failed to destroy vital equipment that was revealed to the Chinese. Balanced against the gain, it was worth it, maybe...but the President should maintain a little more distance between himself, the office and real-time events. It's just a wise thing to do.

That's just your opinion. Heads of state use the royal 'we' all the time. The President of the United States certainly qualifies as a head of state.

Did you read or hear the speech? He gives full credit to those who participated in the raid, those who gathered the information, but did take credit for giving the order, as he should have. By giving that order he put his entire career on the line. Had the raid failed he most certainly have been 'punished' like Carter, ie not re-elected. The easy call would have been to NOT make the call. Not to mention the damage done to international relations.

                                    11:35 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Good evening.  Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who's responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children.

It was nearly 10 years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history.  The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory -- hijacked planes cutting through a cloudless September sky; the Twin Towers collapsing to the ground; black smoke billowing up from the Pentagon; the wreckage of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the actions of heroic citizens saved even more heartbreak and destruction.

And yet we know that the worst images are those that were unseen to the world.  The empty seat at the dinner table.  Children who were forced to grow up without their mother or their father.  Parents who would never know the feeling of their child's embrace.  Nearly 3,000 citizens taken from us, leaving a gaping hole in our hearts.

On September 11, 2001, in our time of grief, the American people came together.  We offered our neighbors a hand, and we offered the wounded our blood.  We reaffirmed our ties to each other, and our love of community and country.  On that day, no matter where we came from, what God we prayed to, or what race or ethnicity we were, we were united as one American family.

We were also united in our resolve to protect our nation and to bring those who committed this vicious attack to justice.  We quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda -- an organization headed by Osama bin Laden, which had openly declared war on the United States and was committed to killing innocents in our country and around the globe.  And so we went to war against al Qaeda to protect our citizens, our friends, and our allies.

Over the last 10 years, thanks to the tireless and heroic work of our military and our counterterrorism professionals, we've made great strides in that effort.  We've disrupted terrorist attacks and strengthened our homeland defense.  In Afghanistan, we removed the Taliban government, which had given bin Laden and al Qaeda safe haven and support.  And around the globe, we worked with our friends and allies to capture or kill scores of al Qaeda terrorists, including several who were a part of the 9/11 plot.

Yet Osama bin Laden avoided capture and escaped across the Afghan border into Pakistan.  Meanwhile, al Qaeda continued to operate from along that border and operate through its affiliates across the world.

And so shortly after taking office, I directed Leon Panetta, the director of the CIA, to make the killing or capture of bin Laden the top priority of our war against al Qaeda, even as we continued our broader efforts to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat his network.

Then, last August, after years of painstaking work by our intelligence community, I was briefed on a possible lead to bin Laden.  It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground.  I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan.  And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden and bring him to justice.

Today, at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.  A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability.  No Americans were harmed.  They took care to avoid civilian casualties.  After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body.

For over two decades, bin Laden has been al Qaeda's leader and symbol, and has continued to plot attacks against our country and our friends and allies.  The death of bin Laden marks the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al Qaeda.

Yet his death does not mark the end of our effort.  There's no doubt that al Qaeda will continue to pursue attacks against us.  We must –- and we will -- remain vigilant at home and abroad.

As we do, we must also reaffirm that the United States is not –- and never will be -– at war with Islam.  I've made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9/11, that our war is not against Islam.  Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims.  Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own.  So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.

Over the years, I've repeatedly made clear that we would take action within Pakistan if we knew where bin Laden was.  That is what we've done.  But it's important to note that our counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan helped lead us to bin Laden and the compound where he was hiding.  Indeed, bin Laden had declared war against Pakistan as well, and ordered attacks against the Pakistani people.

Tonight, I called President Zardari, and my team has also spoken with their Pakistani counterparts.  They agree that this is a good and historic day for both of our nations.  And going forward, it is essential that Pakistan continue to join us in the fight against al Qaeda and its affiliates.

The American people did not choose this fight.  It came to our shores, and started with the senseless slaughter of our citizens.  After nearly 10 years of service, struggle, and sacrifice, we know well the costs of war.  These efforts weigh on me every time I, as Commander-in-Chief, have to sign a letter to a family that has lost a loved one, or look into the eyes of a service member who's been gravely wounded.

So Americans understand the costs of war.  Yet as a country, we will never tolerate our security being threatened, nor stand idly by when our people have been killed.  We will be relentless in defense of our citizens and our friends and allies.  We will be true to the values that make us who we are. And on nights like this one, we can say to those families who have lost loved ones to al Qaeda's terror:  Justice has been done.

Tonight, we give thanks to the countless intelligence and counterterrorism professionals who've worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome.  The American people do not see their work, nor know their names.  But tonight, they feel the satisfaction of their work and the result of their pursuit of justice.

We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism, and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.  And they are part of a generation that has borne the heaviest share of the burden since that September day.

Finally, let me say to the families who lost loved ones on 9/11 that we have never forgotten your loss, nor wavered in our commitment to see that we do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on our shores.

And tonight, let us think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11.  I know that it has, at times, frayed.  Yet today's achievement is a testament to the greatness of our country and the determination of the American people.

The cause of securing our country is not complete.  But tonight, we are once again reminded that America can do whatever we set our mind to.  That is the story of our history, whether it's the pursuit of prosperity for our people, or the struggle for equality for all our citizens; our commitment to stand up for our values abroad, and our sacrifices to make the world a safer place.

Let us remember that we can do these things not just because of wealth or power, but because of who we are:  one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Thank you.  May God bless you.  And may God bless the United States of America.

                                                            END               11:44 P.M. EDT

He got the job done, Bush took it OFF the table! It was a target of opportunity for Bush, it was a mission to avenge the deaths of 3,000 + people and countless US service members lives and give Americans closure for Obama.

Perhaps you might watch some of the Democratic convention this week where praise is being heaped upon the President personally for it.

Go after him? If this book actually contained any classified info he would already be in a cell with Bradley Manning and his publisher would have been taken over. You cannot sell classified information, that is treason, so the fact that he is still walking around and this book is on shelves means that there is not a word of classified info in it.

They want the book out to expose all those pussies at the white house. This guy is home free and a job well done.

When the book's upcoming publication was announced a few weeks ago, I posed the question as to whether or not the S.E.A.L.S are required to sign some kind of confidentiality document etc. A couple of people responded and rather ardently, that the S.E.A.L.S. didn't sign anything and they were within their rights to say whatever. Now look what's happened.

The debriefing process for the degree of access afforded the SOF involves signing non-disclosure documents that are pretty explicit in the "thou shalt not" area.

They all signed expressly written documents stating they would not talk about any of the missions they have done, or will do.

This all could have been avoided if this troop did what he agreed to do when signing up for this mission.

Do they think we are retarded? Bradley Manning revealed "classified" information and he is locked up in Quantico for the foreseeable future, yet they want us to believe that this book contains classified information, yet they are going to let it be published? If anything in this book was classified it would be a Federal offense to publish it, not exactly something they just "let slide". In reality this book is simply a psychological manipulation being performed on the American people. By allowing its release, but claiming it contains classified information people will assume that what it claims happened is what actually happened.

If you think this sounds outlandish then ask yourself how plausible it is that the most wanted man in the world managed to survive in a third world country for 11 years while his kidneys were failing, then was shot in the head by a Navy Seal, then dumped him in the ocean. Then the Navy Seal writes a book about it that contains "classified" information, but the DOD is going to let him publish it and make millions of dollars off of it, which by definition is selling classified information, which is treason. Yeah that sounds totally realistic.

It's not a crime until you publish. In this country one would hope that you are not imprisoned because someone says you are going to commit a crime. Once published the crime has been commited and in this case with knowledge that you are comminting a crime. There is already precedence for legal proceedings against someone that has published classified information but it can be difficult to prosecute criminally. Just examine the Bush admin outing of Valeria Plame. It is easier to sieze the profits just like in many states that seize the profits from felons exploiting their crime.

Actually, sir, unauthorized disclosure of classified material is a crime. That happened before publication.

I guess if ther is no classified info , there is no crime. So the govn cant take the money. At least legally. I guess they could pass a new tax on military books. They just love taxes

You actually have to disclose for it to be a crime and here it's obvious DOD is only concerned with the published book. Not too sure the fuss from the Special Warfare Commanding Officer. Big Navy approved participation in Act of Valor! Really doubt this book will disclose information that isn't already known or previously disclosed. Probably the worst this guy has done is just putting himself out there; doesn't really reflect the character of the SEAL community...if you have ever met a SEAL they seem like the most average person you have ever met!

Seal Target Geronimo, the inside story of the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden, by Chuck Pfarrer. ISBN-13: 978-1-4272-1759-2

It's told by the former assault element commander of SEAL Team Six, after talking to the members of the team involved.

I don't see his story being all over the internet news sites.

This who issue maybe in response to the over politicalization of this administration in trying to take too much credit for the killing of UBL. The hunt for UBL well preceeded this administrations' effort to take credir, yes Prez Obama ordered the mission, but it took years of these silent professionals (SEALS, INTEL community, etc,) to get to the point of executing the mission, and NONE of Obamas political appointees and hacks had NOTHING to do with UBL's demise- Maybe this book is an attempt to get the record right without the political obfuscation this administration loves to do. I will read it and make my determination ( PS-I was part of this military for almost 30 years). If this administration tries to prosecute this man, then he may have a pretty good defense by saying that a number of classified leaks on ths mission are DIRECTLY tied to Prez Obama's staff...
