WWII vet, 92, kills intruder with single shot in Kentucky

A 92-year-old World War II veteran describes how he shot and killed an intruder with single shot while defending his home in Verona, Ke. WLWT's Brian Hamrick reports.

A 92-year-old World War II veteran says he wasn’t scared and was only protecting himself and his property when he shot to death an intruder who broke into his home.

Earl Jones, of Verona, Ky., had already been the target of three separate break-ins in August, deputies said, according to WLWT-TV. So when the Boone County farmer heard a bang in his basement early Monday morning, Jones was ready, quickly grabbing his loaded .22-caliber rifle from his bedroom.

When the intruder kicked open the door leading up from the basement, Jones fired a single shot.

“He kicked the door and as soon as he got inside, it was all over,” Jones told WLWT-TV.

“I was hoping another one would come up – I aimed right for his heart,” Jones, who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces from 1941 through 1946, told The Cincinnati Enquirer

“Was I scared? Was I mad? Hell no,” Jones told the Enquirer. “It was simple. That man was going to take my life. He was hunting me. I was protecting myself.”

Jones then called 911. When Boone County deputies arrived, they found the basement door ajar but the intruder’s body was gone.

A short time later Kenton County Police responded to a call of a man who had been shot and found a deceased man and two others in a 2001 Chevrolet Impala.

The dead man was identified by the sheriff’s office as Lloyd “Adam” Maxwell, 24 of Richmond, Ky.

The two people with him were brought back to Boone County and later admitted they were involved in the burglary, authorities said. Ryan Dalton, 22 and Donnie Inabnit, 20, both of Dry Ridge, Ky., were arrested and charged with second-degree burglary and tampering with physical evidence. Authorities said they removed Maxwell’s body from Jones’ home and drove away.

Jones was not injured and faces no charges at this point, WLWT reported.

These two people need a refresher course on how we are commanded to live. Thou shall not steal and thou shall not kill. These rules apply to everyone not just certain people.

It is "Thou shalt not steal" and "Thou shalt not commit murder". Self defense is fine.

Plan and simple, YOU ARE AN IDIOT. Religion is someones choice and its not the same for everyone so don't spout about the commandments and use it to say the guy should be punished for protecting himself. The weird thing about religion is that its so perverted now a days that it brain washes people in obeying people, and not just following the guidance of a higher power. The question is: Do you believe or dont you? I my self have studied several religions and still cant believe in them. If you are religious and are judging me for what I said, isn't that wrong? Hmmm interesting how that works.

68 year old liberal. US Navy vet, Vietnam era. Multiple handgun owner. Bedside, loaded, .38 cal. +P. Loaded shotgun, 00 buckshot. And I'm damn sure going to vote for Obama. I feel a hell'va lot more threatened by Romney to take away my Social Security and Medicare than I am by Obama taking my guns away.

Obama is going to cut social security as soon as he is re-elected he has allready cut tricare by 13 billion you should allready know this if your really a former vet making our military pay for the govts bills.Further more making our senior citizens have further hardship by cutting 500-700 billion dollars from medicare tis the reson why the social security dept is purchasing millions of rounds of bullets they know when obama pulls the plug there is going to lots of angry folks at their door.Good luck to you when you find a IOU in your mailbox instead of your monthly check.

Be careful for what you wish. Not everyone thinks as you do. Some might think getting rid of you is a good thing. As much as I agree with Earl killing an intruder, I don't want to see everyone armed and settling differences with guns.

Going up against a front line vet is a losing proposition. There's another lesson here: Don't sneer at a .22 rifle. It'll put you down flat, in trained hands.

We have a right to self preservation aint nobody going to do it for us.Firearms were designed for hunting and for protection from those who wish to do harm to us.Many liberals actually own firearms they just need something to point the finger at in the meantime boredom creates many vain imaginings.

What's really amazing is that the authorities didn't charge Earl Jones with any crime. He didn't commit any, but in today's world, that often isn't good enough. What he did absolutely correctly was kill the intruder. Dead men tell no tales. Remember that, people. In self defense, it's your word against a dead person who was obviously violating laws. Much better chance of being considered justifiable using self-defense. Now what he has to do is hire a lawyer and sue the dead man's family and the two 'friends' for something - endangerment, something...before they sue him, which in today's world, they will probably try to do.

So wait, how did the others get into the dude's house and collect their friend's body? Did Earl let them in? A bit of a huge plot hold here, NBC.

                      GOOD JOB OLD TIMER!!!!

This has nothing to do with Obama or politics. It's just a man doing what he needed to protect his life and property.

That's coming from a tried and true liberal.

I am a liberal and personally I think the root of the problem with this country is a that there is a little too much freedom. The boys that did this apparently had the freedom to become high school dropouts or at least didn't go to college and make anything of themselves. They also had the freedom to just run around and walk on to someone else's property in the middle of the night. Their parents apparently had the freedom to bring them up with no respect for other people's life or property. It's a pipe dream to think that if personal gun control was enforced that it would do any good. Even the dumbest liberal knows that. I would personally thank Earl Jones for, first of all, protecting our country on his first service and, secondly, protecting us by sending a message to these losers that no matter how old the residents are if you think you are going to invade their homes you may just be blown off this Earth that you don't deserve to be on.

Freedom's fine, if you earn it.

Thats @!$%#ing awsome Never ever underestimate a very elderly person and never try to @!$%# with them or take there things or lie to them. They come from a differnt time that might as well be a differnt world to us as much as people whom werent there understand it. You were expected to keep you word and most of all in Kentucky I have lived here my whole life people still help each other in small towns here Also World War 2 was a proud time for USA it was the most honable war ever fought we suprized ourseves on that one. People were proud of were they lived and of each other and they trusted each other. Back then you knew your neighbor and never ever locked your door once the trust is gone they locked them forever. I am 34 my grandfather recently canclled a huge life insurance policy he had on him and my granny because they rasied the rates after leaving them unchanged for over 60 years they had broken thier word and pretended to be hid friend all thesse years This was back when they sold door to door and i remeber The insurance people having lunch with us when i was a small child and comeing twice a year for payment and vist. Most people would have looked at this as the insurance company won my grandfather had payed for over 60 years always on time and totally trusted thesse people They made bank on my pop but he didnt care he got to tell them what he thought of them he pointed out the fact that he had payed for 60 years and he could not stand by and let them steal a penny more because if you lie about one thing then you will lie about anything and would find a way not to pay in the end that them and all there kind had no honor or shame and how cheaply people give these very important things that can never be taken from you away from you how they are more important that paper money and people use to understand that now very few even care. I was very proud of my grandfather that day and everyday. He stood his ground hard even after 70 years of working this dark and bloody ground that has forever been his home. Heres to all the old-school honerable men out there like my grandpa and MR. Jones!!!!!

3 Times- there is nothing honorable about war. And there wasn't anything honorable about WWII. Innocent people were killed on every side just like now. I would say it was a righteous and unavoidable.

Good for him! It's a good thing this didn't happen in Canada, he would have been arrested and charged. You aren't allowed to protect yourself or your property here. This is a fact, many have been charged and convicted for just beating an intruder let alone killing one.

For those who do not believe in protecting yourself and your family with a gun, just think how you are going to protect your child when someone breaks in with a gun in their hands and you have nothing....Is it worth having your family killed, raped, beaten or stabbed? Are you willing to watch your family be murdered because you dont want to own a gun? You gonna "liberal" your way out of the situation? Gun control is stupid, because you can not contol the criminals who have guns....and we all know there are to many criminals.
