Texas police are looking for four robbers who they say kidnapped a man at gunpoint from a Dallas ATM.
It happened early Tuesday morning at a Bank of America on Cedar Springs Road.
Rudolph Dinwiddie, 43, of Grapevine, Texas, told police he was withdrawing cash from the ATM at about midnight when the robbers approached him and took his wallet and keys at gunpoint.

Dinwiddie told police they forced him into the back of his car, where he was bound with handcuffs, duct tape and zip ties. He forced to withdraw money from several ATMs in Dallas and Irving.
He was then dumped in an empty Irving field, his hands and feet still bound with duct tape. A passer-by spotted him and called police.

Dallas police said it appears to be an isolated case.
Merchants in the popular Cedar Springs Entertainment District said they were were stunned by the crime. They recently hired private security to patrol and said they thought their crime problems were improving.
"We always would like more police presence in the area, but I don't know what can be done, because these things continue to happen," said Jeff Wright, of the Cedar Springs Merchants Association.

Dinwiddie was treated for cuts on his wrists at an Irving hospital. Dallas police said they are still investigating the case and working with Bank of America to get surveillance video.

That will teach him not to use Bank of America.
Exactly what I was thinking. Anyone who still props up the "Too big to fail" banks by continuing to be their sheeple deserve what they get. LOL
Seriously though, I hate to see anyone be a victim of crime.
Well, there's one certain thing in life. I can read a story in which someone is drowned in a hurricane, shot, beaten, raped, robbed, killed, or all of the above, and if I read the comments under the story I will see at least one..usually several...finding a way to blame the victim. Amazing. You really think people who use BoA and get robbed, kinapped, handcuffed, and left in a field "deserve what they get"? Geez.
um ram, what do you suppose he was doing in that district, at an atm, at midnight, withdrawing cash? planning on buying a new pare of nike's perhaps?........................:)
Just like anyone who drives a car made by greedy union thugs who were bailed out by Obama deserves to crash, right?
IAScooter
I'm retired and an insomniac. I do most of my shopping etc, after midnight. So it could happen to me. Or the man might be a shift worker going to or from work. Just because he's using am ATM at an hour you find odd doesn't mean it's odd hours for him.
I hope the police catch these @!$%#s. There should be a lot of video footage of them and hopefully their vehicle since they know exactly where and when the money was withdrawn.
It WAS, until the news media plastered it all over the planet. I guarentee there will be copy-cats spring up in every city from here on....... and the poor folks getting robbed may not be alive to talk about it.
Thanks Media!!!!!
There is such a thing as "asking for it". Using an ATM, at midnight, in a bad neighborhood, qualifies.
However, sometimes the bad guys venture out of the 'hood. So...1. Situational awareness, pay attention to your surrroundings. 2. CCW with enough training and willingness to use it. 3. Having someone along with you who also possesses #2 is a good idea. 4. Never tell yourself"It won't happen to me".
Not the first time this guy was robbed! He was robbed the first time when Obama bailed out Bank of America. He was robbed a second time by BofA with one of their ridiculous fees. And was robbed a third time from the neighborhood thugs.
Now, for the big question ... who got the most out of this poor guy?
Probably some "occupiers" needing some money to get to Charlotte
Flat - kudos for putting the Obama spin on this. I think you were the first one - congrats!
At least the guy realized he was robbed, this time. Every other time he uses BoA, he's unwittingly/unkowingly being robbed.
I shouldn't talk, though - I use Wells Fargo.
Yeah, Flat... as associated with flat earth?
What's the difference "WHAT" bank they use. They "ALL" have ATM's. WTF.
The local police should just "pose" as a citizen at an ATM with surrounding surveillance and hope that "perps" would try and rob them. The only other way is to look at the ATM recorded tapes but it's too late by then. The damage and mental anguish is done.
I just had a brilliant idea: put ATM's that only dispense 1's near strip clubs. I will be a bizzillionair!!!!!
P.S. Please don't steal my idea. I posted it so you would see how awesome I am, not to exploit my stupidity and get rich off me.
A very wise man once told me the "vermin" come out after midnight. Goodness, even Cinderella was told to be home before the stroke of midnight!
That's because even our ancestors knew it was dangerous after the bewitching hour as most criminals love to commit their crimes after that magical hour. Take a look at the news and generally you will see most of the bad accidents and crimes happen after midnight.
I for one, am home before the stroke of midnight like all good boys and girls so my pumpkin doesn't turn into a Chrysler. LOL.
comeonppl brilliant idea. but it would have to be as big as a refridgerator! filled up each day 2x's!
bazillionaire!
NOTTACOMMIE
Sometimes it may have been the best scenarion not have a gun...any weapon except your own feet and hands can be taken away from the victim and used against them. This case I think he would have lost his gun and/or been killed with it.... I say this, I carry a 45 all the times, and I have over 40 years of martial arts training... HE was Lucky!
and I am a BOA customer...
Shss comeonppl,
why waste the space, money, and middleman for an ATM? The girls should just attached the Square CC reader to their cell phone and Velcro it to (the only thing they can) their panties .
As a nurse, I've worked the 3 to 11 shift quite often. On my way home, if it was necessary, I might have stopped by the ATM at the bank and done some banking. So what? It is my account to access when I need to, that's why there are ATM's. Those who break the law must be treated as lawbreakers, not people who know when to pounce.
However, sometimes the bad guys venture out of the 'hood.
and sometimes the bad guys are already living in the suburbs. Open the papers and read. There are far more suburban thugs all across the land shooting people, killing their own kids, raping women, molesting kids, committing arson, etc., than there are in all of the the "hoods".
I bet there is a security firm that is out of one customer
Maybe this is a good idea or not but why not have an emergency button put on an ATM. Something like On-Star? If someone is being held at gunpoint that button could take a snapshot of the atm video and send it to police or do something that might make a difference? Of course then you have all the moron's that would abuse it. But you never know. It might save a life.
Hi Liz, Good suggestion, however, Mr Dinwiddie would have had a tough time pushing that "panic button" in this case
And then they shoot you because you didn't give them the money, and pushed the button is one good reason.
I thought if you put in you pin backwards it was supposed to alert police.
good idea. then the bank can pay someone to clean off the splattered gray matter when the suspects shoot the victim for pushing the panic button.
Sorry, putting in the PIN backwards does not alert the police. That's an old wive's tale. It was suggested at one time, but it never came to fruition.
I will spin this a bit, duct tape can be applied yourself, zip ties too, passer by "no hand cuffs". hand cuffs would have been enough to hold somebody why bother with all the other crap? they went to several locations to withdraw his cash.
My question is....Will the bank give him his money back? just because he made a police report?..hmmm sounds like an easy way to Double up your cash flow. I bet they "took" every penny he had.
Its true. if he were handcuffed then he couldn't get the money himself, which means the "abductors" would have to go up to the ATM machine and get the money which would mean there would be video evidence.
There is ZERO need to use an ATM at night - plan ahead people. Get cash at a supermarket if you really need it. But the truth is - you really don't need it at midnight do you?
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
They have actually tried to put panic buttons on ATMsand they have been proven not to work. I don't remember the exact statistic but it was something like 90% of panic buttons that were pushed were false alarms. Of the 10% that were rightfully pushed over half of them were not instances that needed police. Besides police would not be able to respond quick enough in order to capture the perpetrator.
Perhaps NBC misspelled the victim's name
Should read as Dimwitt because he was in
You don't suppose what made this a popular entertainment district, do ya?
Wonder what time Mr Dinwiddie was in the "enetrtainment district" withdrawing cash from an ATM?
Huh - Let's see what Google finds. Not as much fun as BLAMING THE FREAKING VICTIM, but more reliable..
Located north of downtown Dallas, the Oak Lawn/Cedar Springs area is home to several bars and dance clubs, restaurants and shopping. The Melrose Hotel Dallas, an upscale hotel built in 1924 and conveniently located at the corner of Oak Lawn and Cedar Springs, is well known for The Landmark, its 4½ star restaurant, and The Library Bar, one of the city's most popular business and after-work meeting spots.
Nope, seems there's a dimwit involved here, but it wasn't the guy at the ATM. What I'm wondering is where were the 5 guys with guns some Texan claimed would show up from out of nowhere should a criminal pull a gun.
Geez. Yep, blame him. Hope you never get kidnapped and robbed, but if you do I am sure your choices will be analyzed and you will be blamed.
Dimwit does fit if you walk up to an ATM at midnight without knowing what's around.
Was he at a restaurant at midnight? Something tells me there is more to Mr Dimwiddie's midnight adventure. Lets not make it seem like the Pope was abducted just yet.
Dimwitt is right...... The robbers couldn't have picked a better ATM to stake; a trendy bar/restaurant area after midnight. The victim is obviously stupid and was probably drunk. Sorry this happened, but why didn't he just put a sign on his back saying "Please rob me."
Maybe he worked nights. Who cares why or when he was taking out money. The criminals probably do this all the time. Usually after they get out of prison the last time they were caught. Let's see if the feds go after them. It is a federal offense "kidnapping". Criminals practice ways to surprise their victims, or learn it while in prison "networking".
Hey bob where do you learn all this about prison released criminals? I've worked with some after they get out and believe me, they don't want to be repeat offenders and spend the rest of their life in prison. The odds of that are small. There are more criminals that have never been caught on the outside than the ones locked up paying for their crime/crimes. What have you got away with lately?
ReaderUp: Only what I read and see in the news all the time. However you can believe their are no repeat offenders, if you please. I don't get away with anything; I have to work all the time in this country to just survive. By the way, how many offenders have more than 5 arrests before they went to prison?
Below are statistics from a DoJ study of state prisoners. You may want to re-think that "small odds" claim.
Rearrest within 3 years
Huh nailed it - so where are all the Rambo's who say "try that in Texas"? Gun(g)-hohohohoho, keep living your fantasies.
What does someone need money at midnight? Why cash, why not just use a debit bank card. Who doesn't take them anymore?
Use a little common sense. If someone is going to rob you, midnight would be a good bet.
Steven 100, you asked:
Lap Dancers wouldn't if Mr Dinwiddie was in the popular Cedar Springs Entertainment district (another name for Red Light/Adult Entertainment district)
Who cares why he was getting money? He has that right and we don't know why he was there.
Because the gals in those clubs don't take debit cards
LOL... I live 1.5 miles from this area of Dallas and I can assure you.. "its not a redlight district' or has any strippers. This is a crime that would happen anywhere in the US where there is an ATM. Last time I checked, that was just about.. everywhere.
So if strippers wasn't the case, the question stands and its a good one. Why did he need to take out cash at midnight? Why would you put yourself in a situation where you are removing cash in a dark quiet spot late at night? What if there is more to this "innocent victim".
I think I figured out who RAM-762581 is: Rudolph Dinwiddie, 43, of Grapevine, Texas.
I mean really, who in their right mind goes to a ATM at midnight in an "adult entertainment district" and gets cash? Some loser wanting to feed his paycheck into the panties of a stripper with the thoughts of getting lucky?
Nope! Nothing could possibly go wrong with that. Right? Right RAM?, Uh, I mean Mr. Dinwiddie.
I think Mr Dinwiddie stopped to buy some crack, and things went wrong.
I think people are entitled to visit a bank machine any time they wish to withdraw their own cash for whatever they need it for. Blaming the victim is just trolling. I'm opposed to spending for illegal activities, but I'm not judging someone because they decide to get some money out of the machine.
I'm glad this guy was relatively unharmed. It could have been much, much worse.
Hey Zapper, since you think its OK, I know where there is an ATM located in the pork & beans section of Miami, Fl where there will be several people waiting to assist you with your midnight cash withdrawal.
Go on, it's perfectly legal and you can go there anytime you wish. Hurry up now, they tend to get agitated when you keep them waiting.
Like I said earlier, many trolls exist on these vines. Okeeboy, you should remind your friends that some folks have conceal carry licenses, as well, and they are not afraid to use them. It's sad that we live in a country where crime and criminals are so obvious, and it's not considered a shameful act to rob someone.
That's true Steve and don't most places have an atm inside now days? He probably didn't want to pay the atm fee's at one in the restaurant or night club and maybe he wanted the cash for all the one dallor bills to tip the girls in the strip club?
This is a 100% gay area, don't think tipping "The gals" was going to be an issue...
You obviously have not been. Do a google street view of the strip...
Oh zapper, you're a character. Of course people *should* be able to get moeny out of an ATM anywhere at any time. Just like a woman should be able to jog solo along any unlit backwoods path she wishes at 5 in the morning. However, if you so chose to not consider the reality of this world before doing those things - you are asking for it. You knew better and yet decided to do so.
Is it the victims fault? Yes, indeed it is partially their fault. If they had looked before they jumped (the old phrases are always the most accurate) they wouldn't be in the situation to begin with. It's not like this guy was in his house with the doors locked and they broke in. No, he was by himself in a less desirable part of town during the earliest part of the morning. This doesn't take the blame off the offender by any means so don't assume I'm just blaming the victim. However, criminals with be criminals. Maybe a little butt chewing would be a positive reminder on how to not get in those positions to begin with.
This is NOT a "redlight" district. It is an area that is full of bars and reasturants. There are $10,000,000 penthouses 5 blocks from this location, the apartments that are ~100 feet away bring ~$1500 for a small 1 bedroom. The location this happend at is Less than 200 feet from 2 very popular bars and it is VERY well light...
I would think that the higher-end strip clubs would have cash machines...I'll go do some in person research and get back to you all.
If you haven't been to Dallas lately, the 'entertainment district' along Cedar Springs is just a bunch of strip clubs and dive bars. Not the kind of area you even want people to see you in, especially if they think you have any money.
It was reported that:
If you have any idea of Dallas, and Google the BofA ATM on Throckmorton and Cedar Springs (4000 block), you would know this is not even close to Strip clubs. I'm pretty sure you are thinking much further west of this area close to Harry Hines. As someone said earlier, this is also the upscale 100% gay part of Dallas... so however you think that goes along with the story... An entertainment district does not mean "Adult Entertainment"
Hire George Zimmerman!
Jesus Christ, you'd think NBC would have high-enough standards to hire writers that knew how to proofread their own work.
don't throw a tizzy...lizzy..................:)
why don't they EVER report the suspect's descriptions...oh yeah, I forgot there for a minute.....
Why do you need their descriptions? Are you going to try and track them down?
You got 4 dudes. How is a better description going to help you?
maybe the local coverage included descriptions.
Most major gas station have Bank America ATM in a better secured place that are not isolated and in the open. Think smart and safety.
you really wouldn't want to see your "purchase" in all that light...............:)
Everyone knows that the quality hookers have a phone app to take debit cards and credit cards. Oh wait, that's right, some guys are married.
I think Mr Dinwiddie was out for some action.
You got that right! That's how my caught me.
Never ever use credit. Even if you have to MAC at midnight. But planning ahead is best.
The smart hookers are a licensed therapist, then it's deductible.
just finished a job down there, some of the guys would go down to that "district" on weekends....they were shopping of course...........:)
So enlighten us, what were they "shopping" for?
MALEBOMB, the smiley face at the end of Scooter's post is there for a reason.
First, a grammatical error: "He forced to withdraw"?
Second, how could he be forced to withdraw money if his hands and feet were handcuffed, duct taped and zip tied? Were the events in this story told out of order too?
Yeah, yeah, Blame the victim. Much easier than to admit there's a problem and deal with it.
Huh?
As a retired police officer and an instructor in the Criminal Justice Dept at a few colleges and universities, one of the things that causes most of the victims, like Mr Dinwiddie, is the fact that they are not aware of their surroundings/vulnerability to situations like that. Or else by them going to an ATM in an "Entertainment" (read Red Light or Adult Entertainment if you prefer) District presents aspects of a "ripe" victim for the perpetrators of said crime.
Most of these crimes are preventable - only if the victim does not present him/herself into situations that allow for the crime to happen. Bottom Line: if he was not there, then the crime could not have happened to him.
ok folks, meet Jack and pay attention cause jack KNOWS chit!.................................:)
good job jack
Gracias Senor IA ScooterTramp. I actually have a hat that says I know Jack "C"hit!
Ola mi Amigo!
Here's a question..........
Why is there, nowhere in this article, a description of the muggers???
Were they white? Were they black?
Were they Hispanic? Were they Asian?
Were they older? Were they young?
Were they male, Were they female?
How many of them were there?
Were there any distinguishing features about them (tattoos, piercings).
Experience tells me that these are the questions an investigator would ask. An appeal to the community, "Has anyone seen these paople? Please contact the local police." It's with the intricate utilization of what I like to call "CLUES" that most crimes get solved.
forget where you were Jim?................................:)
You think there was someone who saw all this but didn't report it waiting for an article from NBC? lol
wfaa.com (DFW TV) doesn't say anything about the muggers. Damn Texas liberals.
That's because they ate too busy trying to get the real reason Mr Dimwiddie was getting cash at midnight. The truth will solve this case.
If the victim was black and the four "robbers" were white, it's a safe bet THAT would've been the focus of the article.
Why would anyone be stunned. There are millions of criminals around the World that would take a persons cash, life, liberty or anything else they possibly could just because they can. Folks this is the World WE ALL live in full of hatred, bigotry, tyranny for thousands of years. Does not say much for Mankind does it? Don't trust anyone and watch your back.
I dont think it has anything to do with hatered,i think has has to do with wanting money the easy way and probably rob there own friends and family to if they can get away with it.Hell im thinking of hanging out by that A.T.M. myself.
Since you need a password to accesss your money, why don't the banks have a system in place where you have two passwords. One will just get you the money. The other will get you the money and alert the police that a robbery is taking place. Keep drivers license plate info on file and police can start looking right away, if not catch the crooks while the crime is happening.
May I ask what need he had for cash at midnight? Too soon to ask?
I've been out in my younger days after midnight. No big deal, don't the bars and some eating places with bars close at 2:00AM? That is not unusual. He should have checked out his surroundings as the retired officer said. I always have and I have never been robbed.
I have never either, and grew up between The Bronx NY and Jersey City NJ. Both inner city areas. Have gone partying plenty of times, drunken bar hopping with friends, after party trips to White Castle.. and yet I have never had the need to use an ATM at midnight. Common sense would tell me not to, but mostly because I planned ahead knowing how much cash I would need for the evening.
I can think of some things that would require someone to need sudden cash at midnight, but most are not very innocent.
Maybe he wasn't robbed at all. Maybe he just got the money out, used it for purposes his wife wouldn't like, then had to claim to have been robbed to cover the withdrawals of cash. he could have put the duct tape, ties, etc on himself. Or had the ho duct tape him and do the ties.
Too bad he wasn't packing. He coulda pulled out his piece and blown those guys away (oops, they had guns too). Doesn't everybody in Texas carry a weapon? Doesn't Rick Perry require that for voting registration? :-) Sorry, I couldn't wait any longer for the discussion to get political.
But you are right!
A person was robbed (so far as we know) and you have a political agenda? Who's worse, you or the criminals? Both are heartless it seems.
For those who just assume that someone out at midnight must be up to no good, please remember that some people work at night. I used to have a job that i got off at 2am (factory job). People who work night shift have a hard time banking etc..... during the day.
What??? You telling me that midnight would be the best time to take out cash if you work at night? Not BEFORE your shift??? Not during your lunch??
Wow, you and Mr Dimwiddie are victims waiting to happen.
Well what it shows is the sorry state our country is in. Lets blame the victim..... There are places in this wourld (not the US) that a person can walk down the street alone at anytime of the day of night and not be afraid. Instead of blaming the woman in a short dress or making her wear a burqua because a man can't control himself otherwise, lets blame the crooks for once.
I don't think anyone in this country, or anywhere else in the world, should be that naive and innocent minded where common sense should not enter the mind. Like it or not there is crime everywhere. Therefore using common sense judgement should apply to everything we do.
Just because he "shouldn't" have been robbed, doesn't mean he didn't need to look out for it.
That, and there is probably more to his midnight adventure than he is saying.
Consider the crooks blamed: bad crooks. Now consider those victims who make the crook's job easier: bad victims. Being a victim of crime and being stupid aren't mutually exclusive. This guy is very lucky to be alive. I hope he learns some common-sense ATM practices.
It may just be better to do away with ATM machines.....
I've been to those places and felt safe because citizens of those countries aren't armed.
Sorry Sam, but your post AND the one you quoted are both a crock of SH^^T
Sam, I've been to those places too. it takes awhile to get used to feeling safe.....
It sounds like you folks have not seen enough of the USA or you're paranoid. I've been to plenty of places in the USA where I feel safe, even in the night hours. Maybe our definitions of "feeling safe" aren't the same.
I've used ATMs at all hours of the night (as a night-owl, not a lap-dance customer). I drive around the building and look for places where bad guys could hide, and I drive around three more times, if I have to, waiting for other customers (potential bad guys) to leave. I don't care that I probably look like a bad guy while I'm doing that; the irony never fails to give me a giggle. Being pro-active while going wherever I want to go makes me feel safe.
As big and varied a country as the USA is, you really can find places where you can feel safe, whatever your definition is.
Your right Mackspeed, This country has always had things like this happen from the time we got off the boat to shake hands with the Indians and then kill then and take their land. If you want to live in a free country buck up take care of yourself and stop crying. Other wise stay in your home and call for pizza.
There are a lot if not all places you can feel safe but you also need to be aware and take care. Woman should have an escort or aware of the area and maybe even some kind of self protection along with a little training to use it wouldn't hurt.
Hired private Patrol? Maybe it was them~
You must be kidding, did you see the porker int he film, he would scare an old lady in a wheel chair
I want to add that some people find using cash as a great budgeting tool. If you pull out $50 a week for food, then you know that you only have that much to spend. It's been proven that using debit cards and credit cards increases the amount you spend because it doesn't seem real. So as others have stated, he may work the night shift. Hell, he may have even just left a restaurant and realized he needed cash for lunch this week. It's not up to any of you @!$%#s who are blaming him to decide when he is allowed to withdraw cash from his account. It also doesn't mean that he was up to no good because of the time. I'm pretty sure that hookers and drug dealers work round the clock so it's just as likely that the guy in front of you at the ATM at 10am is also looking for his fix. Get over yourselves.
Joker From Aurora, CO banned for making death threats and racist remarks.
Withdrawing cash at midnight at Cedarsprings, Dallas? Ha ha ha! I used to live there.
See what happens when you don't take your gun to the ATM.
Sometimes it may have been the best scenario...any weapon except your own feet and hands can be taken away from the victim and used against them. This case I think he would have lost his gun and/or been killed with it.... I say this, I carry a 45 all the times, and I have over 40 years of martial arts training... HE was Lucky!
and I am a BOA customer...
This quick kidnapping is common in Mexico; hopefully not coming to a city near you.
TOO LATE, I've read of other similiar kidnappings in other parts of Texas and Lousiana
Unfortunately crime will continue even with additional security and roaming police patrols but at least it may move out of those areas to others with less security. At least the guy wasn't wounded or killed and only robbed, even though still disturbing.
