This conversation was never meant to be a personal battle between you and me. I know nothing about you personally (except that you are well-educated, as am I), and you have the right to say what you want. But you did address your 1st comment directly to me, and consequently I was surprised at your tone.

But if you read some of the earlier posts that were made that prompted me to make my comment, you will see that many people do blather about matters that they don't understand and that have nothing to do with the Navy SEAL Foundation declining money from a book they do not condone. Many people do not even write about the issue at hand. Instead they use vulgar language and criticize unrelated things or situations they do not understand. And okay, my son is not protecting your right to write what you want here. But you still have the right to do it. He is trying to make sure we do not experience another 9-11, and if you don't agree with that, then that is your right too.

Keep writing letters regarding war and expressing your discontent about your friend's treatment from the Army. I support your efforts. Meanwhile, I will continue to support, with my money and my actions,the families and friends of the young men I know who have been injured or killed. I know they appreciate every contribution that is made to their foundations because they see the direct results. Obviously, they would rather have their lives and their limbs restored instead, but that is not possible. If you would like to communicate with me personally, I can tell you the good things I have seen the foundations do. I have never supported any war. I didn't even let my kids have toy guns. I think war is wrong, and there is nothing I want more than peace, but meanwhile, the foundations help the men and women (and their families) who need help. Is there anything wrong with that?

I have several family members who are or have been state police, MediVac pilots, and U.S. Capitol police, and I agree they are all underpaid -- and I will and under-appreciated. I don't know a single actor or athlete who deserves millions and millions of dollars for what they do. (Never have and never will watch Jersey Shore.)

Military servicemen think the guys who write books (not just SEALS) are sellouts - and those servicemen and women are entitled to their opinions too.

My final comment. I am not in a debate with you or anyone else. The point of my original post was to suggest that people learn about and contribute their money to a worthwhile cause. I did not expect a direct response from you or anyone else.

I am a former army person and, while I never had the need of a security clearance for myself, understood the implications of revealing any information. "Mr. Owens" is in trouble with the Pentagon more because of his violation of SCI due to the fact that, while the lawyer tries to claim that he was not required to clear the book with the Pentagon, "Mr. Owen" was required to. If you look on the internet (and yes they are available out there) you will see the an SCI NDA specifically states that any information involved in SCI OR DERIVED from SCI HAS to be cleared through the Agency with which the individual signed the agreement. You, at NO time, can take it upon yourself to determine what is or is not SCI. THAT is the Issuing Agencies perview. By going around this and allegedly having an "independent" security adviser clear the manuscript he violated his NDA and is subject to prosecution AND seizure of assets among other things. NDA's are serious business and, while his first-hand account may be interesting his violation of his NDA, and specifically his SCI NDA is what has him in hot water right now.

The author was nothing more then a disgruntled soldier out for revenge against his fellow soldiers and the administration. He has betrayed the most basic trust with his fellow soldiers and will be forever be shunned by them. He was a brave soldier who has lost his way. I don't feel anger towards him only pity.

If he released secrets as it appears he did then the DOD should recall him to active duty and convene Court Martial preccedings.

I hope the DOD will allow the other members of the raid to get their accounts on the record for the sake of history. The other members are angry at him for his betrayal. Their stories need to be heard now.

As an attorney myself, it is clear that the battle lines are drawn. The requisite provisions of the law in relation to Mark Owen’s claim for First Amendment Expression runs counter to the Government’s need for secrecy under the rubric of protecting lives. It is well settled, according to the US Supreme Court, that the government may regulate Free Speech according to time, place and manner restrictions that are justified vis a vis health and safety considerations. The DOD could make the argument that they are within their right to curtail Mark Owen’s freedom of expression because it would endanger the lives of other officers. Interesting, I too wrote a book entitled NO EASY DAY: A Fictional Account of the Mission that "Killed" Osama Bin Laden" ( ) However, mine is total fiction. My book was published May 09, 2011.

Most people are glad Osama bin Laden is gone and at exactly what point he was shot doesn't matter much. What strikes me is how this Seal has collaterally disgraced himself and fellow Seals. They actually sounded more grand before he opened his mouth. Obama had the guts to order the raid, the Seals had the honor of carrying out this historical Mission Accomplished. This Seal regurgitates all over his own and his fellow Seals' page in history. I suppose it is naive for most Americans to see and believe they were only selfless and valiant. It is disappointing to see this Seal as self serving. I don't think he thought this through and though he will be a very rich man, he will also be known as a betrayer of his brotherhood.

This former SEAL violated the nondisclosure agreement and the SEAL code. He should be prosecuted under military law and forced to forfeit any and all profits from this book to the special forces community. Protecting the identity and operational secrets of the special forces community should be paramount in dealing with this matter.

It's no different than the Act of Valor movie, which I believe offered more information to SEAL operations and tactics than this book did.

I am sure he researched the legal responsibilities before he and the publisher put the book on the market. He was retired. Does he have a non compete for life in terms of exposing past actions ? We will see. I am guessing not.

I wouldn't mind if the proceeds were distributed to veterans who need the help. I am struggling with the cost of retraining and could use some help.
