Linnea Lomax, 19, was last seen on June 26, 2012.
Updated 12:30 p.m. ET Saturday: A body discovered in Sacramento has been positively identified as 19-year-old Linnea Lomax, a distraught University of California, Davis freshman reported missing in June.
The Sacramento County coroner's office, which confirmed the body’s identity, said Lomax's death is under investigation, but foul play does not appear to be a factor, NBC television station KCRA reported.
The badly decomposed body was discovered 10:18 a.m. Friday near the shore of the American River by volunteers organized by the Klaaskids Foundation. It was in the Glenn Hall Park area, not far from where Lomax was last seen walking away from a mental health appointment, police said.

“We are grieved to report that we have just received confirmation that our search for Linnea has ended in sorrow,” members of HelpFindLinnea.org said in a statement posted on its website. Arrangements for a Celebration of Life service are being made, the group said.
According to her parents, the teen suffered a breakdown while studying for finals.
Police say Lomax was last seen at 1 p.m. on June 26, leaving an outpatient therapy center off Howe Avenue in Sacramento. She was considered missing and at-risk due to her disappearance being "inconsistent with her normal behavior patterns," police said.

She didn’t have her wallet or cell phone, Craig Lomax told NBC News in July. She had been prescribed medication for anxiety and depression, but she left her drugs behind, vanishing into California’s capital, he said.
Last month, a search party turned up a notebook belonging to Linnea Lomax near the American River bike trail.

There is no way foul play is not involved in this. I hope those jerks in law enforcement decide to do a thorough investigation of her death and not just take the easy way out. No foul play, indeed!!!!
Kate: If it makes you feel better, all deaths are to be treated as homicides until proven otherwise. The ME and police have a mandate to do so and people ARE watching.
My condolences to the family and friends of this young lady. I'm glad they found her. I hope the agony the family must be going through is less now that they have recovered her. May she rest in peace. My heart goes out to the family.
The pressure to succeed academically, professionally, and financially that is placed upon young people (and all people) in today's world is more than even mentally and emotionally sound people can bear.
Just say "NO!" no bourgeois expectations.
"Them hippies was right!" (T.D.A.)
Sadly, the most logical explanation of Ms. Lomax' death is that it was a suicide. That makes her death even more of a tragedy for those who loved her. They will spend the rest of their lives wondering if they could have done more to help her.
Guys, I support a foundation for Mental Illness called NAMI (www.namioc.org). There is a big stigma about mental illness and we often turn our backs when people need help. Mental illness can vary from depression, OCD, bipolar, etc. We need to send an awareness and support such organizations to help others. I lost a love one due to depression and if I knew about such organization, I would have helped him on time. Pass it on... it is called NAMI (head quarters is www.nami.org ) - Thank you!
It is truly amazing how crude, clueless and cruel some responders are to this article. It is becoming clear that it is, many times, a thin line in America between "being strong and becoming harsh". In the US, in many homogenous communities and even in some religious communities, there is a tendency to overly "explain everything as beyond our control, cure and caring...and hence it is all 'God's doing'...or, a tendency to treat people's problems as if it is all 'pull yourself by the bootstrap and take it like a white man, or his female version, in your chin or shin". Both approaches are highly simplistic, inaccurate and inadequate.
Mental illness, like depression, can be genetic, neurological or a chemical imbalance. It call also be caused by stress or trauma like "pressures of school and college for some" or "death-of-a-loved one or divorce for others". It can also be caused by loneliness, neglect and "comparitive cognitive dissonance". The latter means if "you think you deserve a million dollars or Oprah lifestyle", and you are only eighteen, you might get stressed, angry and/or depressed.
Sometimes women who are over protected because of their gender or their race, in certain communities, are unable to deal with certain changes, diversity, transition or diversification that they get severely depressed. And it might be the reverse of some men who become angry, aggressive and violent when they feel alone, neglected and are no longer in position of power or privilege...so they take a gun and shoot women or people (that they think neglected them, or are not making them feel important).
Sometimes depression gets worse when medication is taken, and sometimes it becomes worse in spite of it. And sometimes some medicines, as all our neurology and genetics are unique, can make depression or aggression worse. Parents who think drugging their teenage kids or young adult children for every problems themselves need therapy and counseling.
What happens to good ole counseling when one is feeling down, depressed or sad? How come I rarely hear about kids, teenagers or adults going to a "talk therapist" anymore? We used to talk to family, friends and even strangers. Then we talked to professionals, counselors and therapists. Then we talked on phones, emails and the internet - like some of you are doing here. But now nobody talks...they nod, grunt, focus on tasks, tell you what they need, or ask what you want, discuss sports and dumb movies and then then end up committing suicide or killing someone.
How come no teenager or young adult is writing on this matter...just a bunch of unemployed older White men, or some trashy people with horrible opinions and poor understanding of people, mental health, culture, cognition and community?
Kindly discuss, and not throw insults at me or at others.
This article saddened me. I have lost two family members to Depresssion-Suicide (Father) and a sister addicted to drugs due to finding my father and she died in police custody. Some of these posts are OUTRAGEOUSLY in-human and this saddens me even more. We were not rich, we were not poor, we struggled like any family, but some of the stresses and tragedies were conducive to more tragedy.
My heart goes out to this family so much. Depression is a horrible suffering and sometimes hopeless for a lot of people.
I completely agree with you, Dr. M.S. Not to railroad the subject, but I'm only 20 years old and I had been on medication since I was 7. In reality, my Mother ended up being the real lunatic. It's sickening when Parents take advantage of the mental health system for their own benefit. Unfortunately, that's what happened to me. Until I was 18, I was thrown into institutions, put on medication and in therapy my whole life. Literally. Every single day. The Government doesn't realize how destructive it is. It doesn't make people better....it makes them worse. Much worse. I really appreciated everything you wrote and agreed with you 100%.
Now, how did she die? I am a bit confuse, she was found were she was last seen, and no one could find her in three months. Something is wrong with this story. My condolences to the family...
surely she didn't kill herself because of the stress of finals.
noella: Unfortunately, scenarios like this happen thousands of times a year. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in young people between 15-24. Finals were probably just "the straw that broke the camels back."
What amazes me is the lack of education people have about depression, stress and suicide. 1% of the college population has attempted suicide.
Be there for your friends, please.
Is it true she was raised in a highly religous cult? It does not surprise me that she was uable to handle the pressures of the real world.
My condolences go out to Linnea Lomax's family & friends. I'm sorry for their loss.
sad. i have a daughter in college and she is on meds also ..hard to talk to her now, she got togther with a loser of a guy and scared of getting a phone call too..praying for her family and friends..
A side effect of prescription drugs for depression is an increase in suicidal thoughts.
I'll never understand psychiatry.
I fear another poorly treated patient with improper conceptualization. the likelihood of her receiving medications as the primary approach and inadequate psychotherapy and case management is very high. the company running these centers such as Sutter don't necessarily have the sharpest knives in the drawer for clinical care. AS I say over and over out mental health treatment is in tatters in the US. If you have money however you can receive excellent care.
This is a very sad day. I have met her parents and have rafted the American River with their rafting company.
This is a double tragedy for the Lomax family. Years ago, an engaged couple who were raft guides for them went on a hiking trip together. They were found bludgeoned to death in their sleeping bags on a Northern California beach. Their killers were never found.
God bless their family during this time of shock and grief. My heart goes out to them.
.
So sorry to see another young person pass away needlessly.
There are so many missing young people in our world. I was sad when I realized what the headline pertained to, then quickly said to myself, If it was not our missing freshman, it was some family's loved one. She was obviously loved and will clearly be missed
Foul play doesn't seem like it played a role? Now, why don't I believe that? Something happened and I think it involved another person.
Why such a vicious reaction to someone's opinion? Calm down....
MY prayers to the family and condolences of their loss. As a healthcare professional I understand and have seen in my career many with depression. Frankly I could say without hesitiation that all of us in some degree suffer from depression in our lifetime. The sum total of this is how deep the depression is, what caused the depression, our access to medical help (medication and or general crisis consultation) support from family and friends, lack of facilities to support those with any psychiatric complaint (which I can say are overwhelmed and don't have enough support in in patient or out patient centers) Given the state of our lives with high job less rates, wages that don't support families and poor medical coverage..it is a God's wonder that more people take their lives. This young woman was not different than many college students mentally and physically exhausted trying to make the grade. Gone too soon...and so much to give...God Bless all of you that take it one day at a time...you are not alone!!!!!
My condolences to this family. I pray they have the support they need at this terrible time.
Prayers for the family, may she rest in peace,Mental illness is a disease just like any other, the stigma needs to end.I am sorry for what she went through and hope the parents can turn this tragedy into helping more college students. The first year students have so many adjustments and they really do need an upperclassman to help them and encourage them.Parents need to be notified about their child even if they are in college. It needs to be a family affair with the counselor. She was a beautiful young girl, and I am sure great in all ways.Let us not judge the girl, you never know it could happen to any of us.
How so very sad, such a beautiful woman. My prayers go out to her and her family that they may someday find peace.
Note; To those post's Close minded thinking about what her problems were and your ability to say hurtful things about praying for help, shows your intolerence and ignorance of an issue that has been out there since teaching began. Just as in a family or work place arguments your ability to confront problems and deal with them is how you see and feel about yourself. To this day there is no alert system that says this person needs help lets stop and help him or her. They knew Linnea had problems but they cant put into place something that would help her now. Family or friends need to intervene and say or do something as soon as they Think there is an issue. Of course this is obvious to most, yet it still happens (Colorado) ( NY)
Whats the solution?
This just goes to prove how disgusting and pathetic parents are For pressuring their kids over "School" and "Education".
Some people just are not College material for F**k sake. But sadly parents seem to think it is okay to push and push their kids until they go straight over the edge.
It would seem this Poor Girl did not wan't to be taken alive probably because she would be made to suffer the stress further, and she clearly would not tolerate being treated as a Disease by the People who say she was "Mentally Ill".
The Poor Girl had every right to take her life (if that is what the cause of her death was). People however had NO right to Pressure her so much that she felt she had to die.
Maybe wrong to say but she had a sweet smile and beautiful hair.
Wow. How upsetting. She was extremely beautiful. I'm only one year older than her.
Unfortunately, she more than likely had killed herself. Believe it or not including the fact that she had come from a mental health appointment, is relevant to the case. However, it is also a disadvantage. It's frustrating, because in some cases where people actually are murdered, people will just write it off as a suicide because they have a record. I would know. The mental health system is extremely screwed up. Admittedly, I've been in and out of mental institutions my whole life. I have Aspergers Syndrome and my Mom always took the advantage of throwing me in one when I didn't "behave." So yes, this young lady was probably extremely depressed. In honesty, the mental health system screws you up even more than you were in the first place.
Anyways, enough of my ramblings. My condolences to the Family.
