2 tornadoes touch down in NYC neighborhoods

A tornado is seen touching down in New York City on Saturday.

Updated at 7:50 p.m. ET: Two tornadoes touched down in New York City late Saturday morning, one in Queens and another in Brooklyn, causing damage and frightening startled residents.

Two possible tornadoes also were reported later Saturday in the Washington, D.C., area as strong winds and heavy rains plowed through the area, leaving tens of thousands without electricity as a severe weather cold front spanned much of the East Coast.

An EF0 tornado made landfall in the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens at approximately 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The 70 mile per hour winds hurled sand and debris in the air, downed multiple trees and power lines, moved cars and damaged property.

About five minutes later, an EF1 tornado touched down in Canarsie, Brooklyn, the National Weather Service confirmed. The 110 mile per hour winds leveled trees and power lines and damaged homes.

No injuries were reported from either tornado.

Videos taken by bystanders showed a funnel cloud hurling sand and debris in the air, and possibly small pieces of buildings, as it moved through the Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens.

In Canarsie, where the tornado ripped off parts of roofs, Terrill Baden struggled to close his front door as the twister rolled in.

"The wind was very stong," Baden said. "It was raining. A lot of debris was flying around."

Linda Beal-Benigno was driving on the Belt Parkway near the Flatbush exit when she said a tornado traveled across the road.

"At first I though it was dark smoke," she told NBCNewYork.com. "The entire belt felt like it was shaking. It was very frightening because you could see the funnel traveling and moving. It crossed the highway and just missed cars."

She added, "I never saw anything like that in my life."

Thomas Sullivan, general manager of the Breezy Point Surf Club, said the twister ripped up cabanas and deck chairs.

"A lot of rain, a lot of wind," he said. "It picked up picnic benches. It picked up Dumpsters."

"It was crazy," neighborhood resident Joseph Mure told The Associated Press. He said he was in the shower when the storm hit, and went outside to snap a picture of the retreating funnel. "There were a lot of sirens going off. You could see it twisting."

Near the nation's capital, tornado-like funnel clouds were reported Saturday afternoon in Chantilly, in Fairfax County, and in Prince George's County, Md. The weather service hadn't confirmed the reports as tornadoes by early Saturday evening.

NBC Learn explains how tornadoes form.

Fairfax County officials said that a tornado was on the ground shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday. They reported three home cave-ins because of downed trees, a water rescue in the Potomac River and dozens of down electrical wires, Dan Schmidt, a fire department spokesman, told the Associated Press.

There were also reports of malfunctioning traffic lights and downed trees and power lines in the area as thunder, heavy rains and winds approaching 60 mph struck the region.

Emergency officials were attending to about a dozen people who were injured during a panicked rush for the exit at the Show Place Arena, hosting Prince George's County Fair, in Upper Marlboro, said Mark Brady, a spokesman for the Prince George's County fire and emergency management agency. About 400 to 500 people were in attendance at the arena, officials said. Twelve were evaluated for injuries and four were transported to hospitals, NBCWashington.com reported.

In the District of Coulmbia there were reports of about 10 downed trees, including one that came down on a southeast apartment building undergoing construction, NBCWashington.com reported.

Rain falls on center court in Arthur Ashe stadium to suspend play on Day 13 of the 2012 US Open at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

In Connecticut, strong line of storms left damage in Kent, Ridgefield and Northfield, NBCConnecticut.com reported.

Strong thunderstorms reached western Massachusetts Saturday evening, NBC station WWLP reported.

NBCNewYork.com's Matthew R. Warren and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

Was this one due to "Catastrophic Climatic Destabilization" too? The Brooklyn Tornado of 1889: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/10/flashback-the-brooklyn-tornado-of-1889/

There is random tornadoes almost everywhere (where there is rain/wind) once in a while, just because it is not in the Tornado Alley area doesn't mean they can't get tornadoes occasionally.

@Anna 1.3 & Gabe b. 1.1

Well while there have been occasional unusual weather throughout history,(like the brooklyn tornado of 1889), they have been alot more frequent in the past 18 months, we up here in the northeast (and im not saying weve had it worse than anyone else) have had four tornadoes,18 inches of snow IN EARLY OCTOBER, earthquakes, flooding from hurricanes, absolutey NO snow this winter, and more than 2/3 of the days this summer were over 97 degrees!

So yes Anna we have had FREAK events in the weather before, but the stretch we have had recently is almost unprecidented! There is nothing new under the sun,but that DOES NOT mean that climate change is not happening! I just can't understand those that think we can just do whatever we want and nothings gonna come of it. So just keep wearing your blindfold and when your grandchildren cant go out in the sun without wearing 1,000,000 protection sunblock then what will you do? I guess its just easier to ignore the probem and say it a figment of our imagination than to do something that might help reduce the problem. Keep burying your head in the sand and the problem will just go away? NOT LIKELY!

Even if it is not real, I'd rather err on the side of caution and be wrong than go on like we are and wake up one day to a world we cannot survive in and be thinking "man I wish I had done something sooner".

Climate changes by nature, yet we are fortunate as a species to have lived during a relatively peaceful time, geologically speaking. But to point to any freak weather occurrences (or even a string of occurrences) as some kind of unimpeachable proof that humans bear the lion's share of the responsibility for changing climate is ridiculous. It is further silliness to suggest that we have so much power over the environment that we can just flip a switch and deny the powers of the universe the ability to do with us and our climate as they please. When the sun explodes, there will be an environmentalist somewhere trying to blame it on humans and global warming.

If the climate is great for us now, any change from that (and it *will* change) would likely be bad, correct? So of course we get nervous when the weather patterns start changing. However, thinking we can "fix" a system we don't fully understand has more potential for harm than good. Now don't get me wrong, I don't advocate wanton environmental destruction; minimizing waste and pollution, i.e., efficiency, is a practical and noble goal. With respect to climate change, however, I suggest we continue to do what we are best at; adapt.

Actually, it's global cooling this time; and that's Jimmy Carter's fault! The Iran oil embargo starved us for oil resulting in a severe drop in CO2 emissions nearly freezing us to death! When the embargo ended it created such a severe reaction that now we're drunk on oil putting out CO2 emissions getting people to "think" it's global warming. Uh-uh, it was global cooling all the time! Just a terrible reaction from the oil jonesing caused by Carter.

Sorry, this has nothing to do with climate change! This is absolutely, positively, not the only tornado which has ever hit it the NYC area! Where ever you have dramatic differences in temperatures and rapidly moving storm fronts you have the possibility of tornadoes! I live in Colorado and we have had far fewer tornadoes this year than in the past.... I guess that our lack of tornadoes is being caused by global warming! Oh my God, I must apologize to the Weather Messiah, Al Gore! I guess it was global warming a few years ago when his house in Tennessee had its pipes frozen during a cold snap!

I am sure that there are some people in this country who remember colder/hotter winters/summers, (or wetter/drier)! Weather changes without much input from people! Centuries ago farmers grew grapes in Iceland and sailors could circumvent the arctic! All global warming (global cooling from the experts in the 70's) is a way to seperate Americans from their cash! This is why Al Gore has become incredibly wealthy by selling his "carbon credits"! This is as stupid as Beaney Babies, or the tulip craze in Holland a few hundred years ago!

alan,

"What is going on with that guy's windshield wipers in the video? It's barely raining and he has them on full blast and they seem to be bending."

I know what you're talking about. It looks kind of weird, right? I guess it's just an optical illusion the way they appear to be bending. I wonder why the guy in the car keeps telling God to look at this. He keeps saying over and over "Oh, my God! Look at this! It's a tornado." Does he think God is stupid or something? I think it's kind of an indication, though, of how often they see tornadoes in New York City.

ONly the truly ignorant think Global Warming and isolated freak weather events are direct correlations.

Global warming is a epochal trend, you can still have a odd event that wold seem to contradict it.

And Global Warming does not mean it is hot today--it means the overall warming will cause such freak weather to increase.

You can debate the causes of Global Warming, but you cannot dismiss that it is occurring.

And to ignore mans impact on it is to show how little you care about how your own bad acts combined with those of billions of others will affect your kid and future generations.

Does it truly hurt you

To recycle

To lower and eliminate bad gasses such as CFCs and car emissions

To lower pollution

To keep our waters clean

To search for better cleaner solutions to our energy needs (Which can also make us more self sufficient)

I have seen many changes in nature over the course of my lifetime, you may scoff at these less than glamorous creatures..a small ugly fish, a snail a bird. But everyone of them has a place in the 'circle of life'. And for us to be responsible for extinctions is a crime against God.

Though I do find it off that those who deny the Theory of Evolution are also willing to say that an extinction is the natural course for a species. If there is no evolution, how can that be?

For the religious, God created the earth for us to take care of, not to (as Anne Coulter said) to rape.

For those who are not religious and rely more on science only, you already know how delicate the earth really is.

FYI I live in Manhattan, A Tornado in Queens would be an improvement! (JK) BTW the Rockaway's are not very close to Manhattan at all..I would guess an hour on the Subway...it is past Coney Island (I have never been there)

Very sound observance, frankly.

It is silly to experience a hot day, a hot summer, or even a mild winter and say, "Aha!, Global Warming!".

It is equally silly during a cold winter to say, "Global Warming? Ha!".

to frankly;finally the truth ,it's wonderful to know someone else thinks that global warming is the best thing that ever happened to the organized pollution industry,It's like a great David Copperfield illusion ,while he's got you looking at one hand the trick is being performed by the other...while we all worry about CO2 gasses all the other real pollutants in the atmosphere skyrocket and yet no-one is asking about those....as we worry about global warming ,acid rain becomes worse ,so-called clean coal rips the tops off of mountains and the contaminants ,slurry and overburden destroys the streams and rivers around those mountains..as we worry about CO2 we look for alternatives like natural gas and we destroy our water supplies with an un tested drilling procedures like hydro-fraking....

Bundgaard,

"I have been over Greenland 169 times, and I can assure you that there now is global warmer compared to 1970"

I think most global warming deniers must have all been reading the same book: The Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism published by Regnery Publishing, Inc. The author of that book obviously sees global warming as a purely political issue rather than a scientific issue because he spends more of the book blasting liberals, Hollywood, the media, etc. than he does on the actual science involved.

@ onlyyoucanchangethelaws

Talk is cheap. There has been glaciations before and there will probably be more in the future. We live on an active planet and we have to adapt as much as possible to these climate changes (we did thousands of years ago, while humans existed and were right in the middle of an Ice age, which I strongly doubt they caused).

But let's assume that you are right and that we, humans, are the main cause of climate changes, and that if we are really really careful there won't be anymore glaciations ... surely you don't drive a car (nor any other vehicle), don't use electricity, natural gas, nor any products that has been created through the help of electricity (or other), nor anything else that could pollute at one stage or another. You couldn't possibly be using a computer right now could you? I wonder how they created all the parts for it ...

Assuming that you live in a cabin in the woods, and consume the least products possible, I wonder also how you expect to stop every country in the world from using and creating products while polluting the air, water, and ground. And stop all the ships as well because we you certainly know they pollute the water quite a bit. Planes pollute as well. Not to mention that there is about 7 billions of us humans, and the global population is still increasing (I think this is actually our main problem, as far as pollution goes, and the population is increasing very quickly).

If you want to yell at me, at least be constructive, ask me to recycle the products I use when possible, to cut down on pollution.

New Yorkers are so jaded by life that the only thing left for them to bitch about is the weather.

This isn't like a tornado touching down in a Midwest field. If a tornado were to touch down in Brooklyn or Queens, the loss of life would be staggering. It would appear though, that you're more jaded that you would remain ignorant to the loss if a tornado touched down in one of the most densely populated areas in the country.

Not really that funny anymore is it?

So it's a childish tit for tat with you? There is plenty of hate coming from many states directed towards New York weather. So much in fact, people blame the National Weather Service claiming they show NY favoritism and bias.

Brokinarrow, not everyone shares the same beliefs. Look no further than that for your answer.

I know climate change is real. I know climate change will continue long after our species is gone.

I also know that we have to have had some type of impact on it. You can't spew all the crap we did into the atmosphere without any negative impact. The real question is, have we affected it in such a way that a real difference was made.

Brokinarrow, not everyone shares the same beliefs. Look no further than that for your answer.

    Not everyone believes in facts?

I understand what you're saying and I definitely believe we haven't been making a POSITIVE impact on the climate with our polluting. But climate data is something we need a LOT of data to make any accurate statement one way or the other on. Like Anna's post point out, the climate does weird stuff every now and then. Whether or not this current spate of weirdness (droughts and odd weather have happened PLENTY of times in the past, trust me) is OUR fault or not has yet to be known.

Honestly, I think it will only be a few hundred years after this point in time that we'll be able to look back and say definitively: "Yes we caused that" or "No, that wasn't us, but NOW it more than likely is"

Also, is anyone else having issues with the page moving all the way to the bottom when making a comment or trying to reply to things???

Anna, that that exists all around us that we call nature has it's cycles and we as a species have no other choice but to live thru them in whatever way we can and know how.Or at least thats the way it's supposed to work.See,thing is nature can change agonizingly slow or in an instant as we see here,we are in no way in control of this. This is not odd weather, unusual for up here yes but no,in the past it has been far worse. We have been only keeping records for I think its 127 years or so.In Earth time thats about a half second's worth of data,so we still have an awful long way to go before we can even think about knowing what we're talking about and what isdescibed as 'nature' by us lets us know that every once in awhile,or maybe it we that forget.Either way it does keep us on our toes.As for population control nature always evens things out;if one species gets too large there are forces that are able to control population(and yes that includes our own idiocy or our own decisions.)

Well, I wonder if earthquakes are caused by greater population or maybe all that wild fun those wonderful, wacky New Yorkers have at weddings (I LOVE wedding dances!)? Is is possible that volcanoes erupt when too many planes are flying... just got to erupt and fill the air with ash in order to ground all flights? Surely tsunamis have minds of their own. Rain clouds hide over the ocean, discussing which states or countries to tease with light showers or deluges. The sun gets tired of the bickering and just belts out a zillion degrees to show the earth who's boss.

Is it fanciful sarcasm or sarcastic fancy?

Whatever the weather brings, I'll just live with it. No use griping, worrying, biting nails, etc, etc. No matter what anyone says, we can't control it. We can, however, choose to keep our personal pollution to a minimum, if for nothing else than to keep our "house" clean.

        Contrari Tom...

I use a push mower, grow my own veggies and water them with a rain water-solar electric powered pump, rarely drive, and currently in the process of completely switching over to solar electricity. Theese are just a few of the things I am doing since you ask. And it was not my intent to equate the earthquakes to gobal warming but it may have come across that way.

        Anna...

I was not yelling at you anywhere in my post. I did however capitalize and put in bold print a few words to emphasize them and reflect a differrent tone or pitch. I am a realist and do not expect the world to stop maunfacturing and shipping and all commerce. I was simply stating the contrary opinion to your obviously sarcastic and narrow minded statement implying that since the 1889 tornado had nothing to do with climate change then there was no way this one could have anything to do with it either.

Also, since you brought the subject up...

While there are billions of people on this planet and thousands of other countries that are not doing anything about the destruction of our planet by mindlessly consuming our natural resources with no respect for the consequences. By your statement @1.34 of "I wonder also how you expect to stop every country in the world from using and creating products while polluting the air, water, and ground. And stop all the ships as well because we you certainly know they pollute the water quite a bit. Planes pollute as well. Not to mention that there is about 7 billions of us humans, and the global population is still increasing" I guess you just feel "well everyone else is doing nothing so that obsolves me of any responsibility to do anything as well". So how many people have to start living more ecologically responsible before you feel the pressure to join in? 1? 100? 100,000? 100,000,000,000?

I never asked you to stop using anything made by modern technology as I enjoy my central air and my refrigerator and my cable. I wasn't talking down to you (as you did me)and never accused you of anything other than making an extreemly narrow minded statement (thus wearing a bindfold).

Again I wasn't yelling, I was simply stating that your staement of because one event 120 yrs ago probably had nothing to do with climate change then this one probably didnt either was not logical or reasonable.

George Carlin nails it again; tragedy in China that costs people their lives gets 50 posts - little twister in New York gets 400 posts...the closer the event/tragedy, the more we enjoy it.

@onlyyoucan good debates seems to be out of date. I quess maybe it's because one has to research information and sort though it. you know that tough kinda work critical thinking which has turned into critical bashing. lol The earths be doing this for some time it has cycles nothing new there. Are we helping speed the cycle up this time? it looks like it i not saying we shouldn't try to leave a small foot print, but we have gotten so use to our devices and play toys. That may be harder to find away around the slowing green house gas's. it's not like we can flip a switch and stop using oil, coal or nat gas this weekend. Large scale conversion can take decades to put in place. People talk about wind and solar i get it that will help after some research i found the common theme. Alot of people dont want them in thier back yard. Are you ready to drive down the coast line with huge wind farms sunk in the sea bed, or drive accross the desert or plains and see large wind farms or solar planTs? Then will the same people that want to use all of these options say anything about the foot print we leave in the eco system? you can't do these things with out some effect on wild life and the plant life in those areas. I am not saying don't do anything what i am saying is how we get power and deliver it has to be rethought. One option down scale the power grid to a local level where homes and factorys are part of power generatoring that is feed into the local grid. Our grid is so out of date atm it not funny. Another thing our schools have turned into socal issue class rooms instead of high tech class rooms. you know math science the things that will get the new energy and efficient gagets of the future. Social issues are good but When kids talk about how thier feeling get hurt because they got yelled at and then sit around watching the tons of reality shows out there. Then we wonder what happened its our fault not theirs we let it happen. Most of the The top people in high tech (and i am not talking about facebock) are not from the US. And agian we wonder why we have a hardtime turning this ship around. Not only are we financially broke we are intellectually broke. And plz don't give me the line the rich shipped all those jobs oversea. All though that may have some truth find out the real reason why. Before you say oh it was Bushs fault or something like that look in the mirror we let it happen. If you do the math on the ones in DC and the rest of us in the US. You Can add DC crowd to the 1%er club that some many complain about. Do you really think they will get us out of this mess weither its climate change or new energy sources. I think not! We forgot they work for us not the other way around. the only thing is we need a real honest debate about the solutions that will work. Not the blame game of oh bush did it or obama did it as my dad said fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. Another thing he said I will never ask you to do something I not willing to do myself. The man lived by those words As I have grown older I realize how hard that can be. When it easier to play the blame game or pawn things off on someone else

            dmd095....

The switch to solar power generation for feeding the grid really isnt that difficult if you just take the first step.I have a friend in russel that spent $15,000 on solar panels for his house. He now gets a check between $180-$220 per month in the summer(depending on how much eectricity he uses)(this means durring the summer he generally produces twice as much electricity as he uses). During the winter he gets a check between $15-$40 as there is less sun and he heats his house with electricity. He almost never has a month that the electric co. doesnt send him a check.

I have disscussed this subject here on newsvine many, many times. Some laugh, some ask how to start converting themselves.

There are roughy 12,000 households here in West Springfield. With an investment of about $180,000,000( about the same size of the cash payout in the last large powerball jackpot) we could put the same amount of solar panels on every house in town. If you average out the checks to (roughly) $110 per month X 12,000 households you come up with a monthly income of $1,320,000 or enough revenue to convert another 88 homes to solar electricity. The effects of this would snowball so fast its mind boggling. Eventually (I havent done the math but)within 10-20 yrs every house in america would be producing excess solar energy, and using amost no oil or natural gas to heat their homes or water.

Can you imagine if the govt started a program with say $1 billion? Can you imagine the economic BOOM that wouuld be created by all of the jobs this program would create? Can you imagine the economic BOOM that would be created if every family inthe U.S.A. had an extra $200 a month to spend/save because they dont have to pay for electricity or heat? Can you imagine the economic boom that would be created by the revenue the govt would collect after every house was converted?

The idea of a central solar or wind generating station to supply everyone is not probable, logical, or likely. And the total dependency on solar is the same. there are too many night time hours and too many buisnesses that dont have enough space to generate the electricity they use. So you would still need nuclear and fossil fuels, but our dependency would be greatly reduced thus reducing the amount of $$ we ship to oil producing nations- there by reducing our national deficit/debt and increasing the value of the dollar. Yet another economic BOOM!

With the added funding a program ike this would send to the soar field, the solar panels woud become more and more efficient and eventually make storage of the energy more efficient

Even the longest and toughest journey begins with a single step. All we need now is a politician/ president with the gumption and nerve to impliment a program like this.

This is my view on the solar subject. I also feel that the fact that it will take decades to implement is not a good arguement. Mars is decades away and yet we are already starting programs to get there. The same should be done with sloar conversion.

OnlyYou - See, that type of thing (decentralized power production on a city-wide scale) is definitely something that should be done REGARDLESS of mankind's contribution to global warming. The amount of pollutants it would help to take out of the air would be awesome! And like you said, the extra money saved every month would be most welcome as well!

I see someone mentioned it was Obamas fault. Well their close but not hitting the mark. It actually is another reason why unemployment is still high; and how can you help put in place economic policies when your having tornadoes in New York. Give him another 4 years maybe the weather will be better. It might be all the coal mines and coal firing plants that have been closed by the EPA under Obamas administration that has had a adverse effect on the climate. Look at it this way Mother Nature has gotten hooked on Co2 carbon emmisions and then you radically take it away from her and shes mad;angry and withdrawing from Co2. Its cause and effect.

We still do joke about tornadoes from time to time here in the midwest though, Da Noid. We do have to have a sense of humor about those things, otherwise we'd be going insane with fear every single March when the season starts.

The one good thing about being able to respond directly to news posts is that it keeps people occupied who might otherwise spend their time standing on street corners shouting crazily at people.

In the End Times, the Bible says you won't be able to tell the seasons apart. It's winter when it is usually summer and summer when it is usually winter. With all the madness that is happening in the world today, Jesus is coming back any second! If the last tornado in NYC was in 1889 and then this one today, then that is extremely extremely rare place to have a tornado. I don't know if NYC has had anymore. Will have to do some research. Tornadoes are occuring in more and more unusual places. I will never forget on Christmas of 1982 in Columbus, GA the temperature was in the high 80's with very high humidity. We were visiting family and it was miserable. I was due in 9 weeks and it was miserable, but it was worth it, had a beautiful son who is fixing to turn 30!

Lukebandit, I believe that there was a tornado that hit Queens last year. (For those who don't know, not implying you Lukebandit, Queens is part of NYC.) There have also been tornadoes hitting to the north and west of NYC for many years. Some may not have been reported because at one time it was thought that tornadoes do not hit the east coast.

1889 was not the last tornado in NYC. There were several a couple years ago in the area. There were some on Long Island when I was a kid and I even watched a water spout for 30 minutes churning off the shore of Stony Brook in the LI Sound a few years ago.

This isn't the end times. This single event isn't proof of climate change, it is but a single data point, which can't be used to determine anything. Putting this storm in the context of all the other weather in the area and we might see some patterns emerge, but one event is meaningless if we look at it in a vacuum.

There's over 6 billion people in this world, and there is getting to be to many people on this earth for all the greedy people sucking up the resources and replacing people with computers. Its only a matter of time before kaos stikes us back a couple of hundred years back, maybe further.Afew major disasters, wiping out a couple hundred million people wont hurt the remaining.Im kinda looking forward to getting rid of the computers and wiping out wall street and going back to some old ways.People were happier and able to survive without the cartoon lives we are made to believe is the way of life.

Science HAS figured out man's creation - it's called evolution.

Funny though how science can't figure outhow man was created.

Because man was not "created" we evolved and science already explains that, and the weather (which is the real subject of this thread). Clearly some people confuse their religion with science. A mythical being isn't causing tornadoes any more than a mythical being created beings out of thin air. This blather about "end times" and so forth is utter nonsense.

So if they are in fact teaching science in schools and doing a good job of it then some folks are missing the important points.

the one and only ... Science SAYS we evolved but has no proof, no "missing link". Science (and archeology) keeps proving religion.

Yes, the Dems are in bad trouble. They denied God 3 times at the convention. Then the next night they listened to Father Dolan? 's BEAUTIFUL PRAYER that just ROCKED that convention. They said a bunch walked out. Wow. How arrogant! They think they will be able to step aside on Judgement Day and not listen to THEIR JUDGEMENT. Feel so sorry for them for what they face!

I now totally believe we are "entering" the Last Days the bible talks about.

The weather is a HUGE indicator. Everywhere I go, people are talking about the change in the weather patterns. People say they have lived in places for years and don't remember seeing what they see today.

The bible says that when we look up and see the signs foretold in its pages, it's only the beginning. We will see strange weather in "diverse" places and this weather will accompany other signs. We'll have all these uncommon things taking place together. So, it will be different from when we were born, or from when the history of mankind began. We will see a set of signs all occurring during the same period of time.

Another major sign is the increase in technology. I'm not an oldie, but boy, am I amazed by the Internet, social media and all the gadgets and inventions that are created on a daily basis in this country alone. You can buy something completely new today, and by next year, it has been replaced with something else.

There is an astounding increase in lawlessness. The crime rates can go down, but what about all the recent headlines in the news? I've lived long enough to personally see the change in attitudes toward things.

Children are being sexualized behind closed doors in increasing numbers, and many adults, especially males, do not see anything wrong with it. And for whatever reason, increasing numbers of women are not protecting their own children from abuse.

People are having children they don't want. The foster care system is a complete mess. Where will it end?

We are also becoming a society that moves rapidly. Years ago, on television, programs were staples for longer periods. Today, it's common for shows to lose their audiences quickly and get canceled. We're always anxious to move on to the next new thing.

As far as politics go, I hope President Obama gets a second term in 2013, and I have zero party affiliation.

I believe it is important that our first and perhaps only black president has a successful term. It's good for America and for race relations here and around the world. Barack Obama becoming our president has caused division, but has also changed some attitudes for the better and brought other people together. I have witnessed this firsthand.

I already knew that George Bush was not the antichrist, and neither is President Obama or Governor Mitt Romney. The antichrist is not supposed to come from our shores anyhow. So, in this country, we need to embrace our leaders and pray for them to do well.

What is ahead in history, no man can stop. The weather may be changing because of the way we treated our environment. But it doesn't matter how it is happening. What matters is that it IS! Everything happens because God controls it and his purposes will come about whether we agree with them or not.

I used to want to be around when Jesus returns in all his glory to bring judgment, but I'm not so sure anymore. It's going to be a terrible time of corruption and chaos. I don't think I want to live through that.

America is supposed to decline... eventually. And I keep thinking it will be majorly rocked by terrible natural disasters which get the ball rolling in that downward direction. Maybe California will fall into the ocean or have a gigantic earth quake.

We can be "up" one day and then experience a terrible natural disaster or even a war and the situation changes almost overnight. A terrible natural disaster could ruin major crops. If our ability to feed our nation becomes compromised, then what? I hate to think of it.

I believe the bible also talks about a time when the amount of money someone has means nothing. That immediately makes me think about a shortage of food. It means there is such a shortage of what we need to survive, that money can't even buy it. That is a terrible time.

No political party has the "edge" on morality. It's not about political parties or anything like that. The people who are going to survive the end times belong to the Lord. He's not coming for America or any other nation. He's coming for individual people, those people who love him and obey his laws.

With that said, it doesn't matter if your party or group "claims" to believe in values or to even believe that God exists. IMO, most people don't live it. If you are not practicing what you preach, you are a hypocrite and before the end of time, you will be revealed.

The only god that is angry with us is The God of Nature, and that god is angry that we are so presumptuous as to imagine that we were created in its image and given license to rule over its domain.

Welcome to the Midwestern US there New York City, as small tornadoes are pretty run of the mill here. Out here it is the big tornadoes that you worry about, not the garden-variety F-1 that rips a few tree branches down and rips the roof off of your garage. Wait until an F-5 goes through midtown Manhattan in rush hour and flattens every building for a half mile wide to 3 stories high? That's the kind of tornado that I'm taking about! You New Yorkers haven't seen nothing to write home about yet, so clean it up and let's get back to work!

I live in the Midwest now, but I am a native New Yorker. For a person living in NY, an F1 is a terrifying thing since tornadoes are not known to happen there. However, they have seen plenty of weather to write home about. I have lived through Category 3 and 4 hurricanes, and now living in Nebraska have seen towns wiped out. So please. old timer, don't wish disasters on anyone.

Thanks Avenger, I find it quite amusing that people that were not in NY or DC for that matter, on that date have a hell of a lot to say about what we get upset about.

( my anxiety level is already going up as it always does now around that date)

New Yorkers are so quick to bring up 9/11 but sure can't wait to say something derogatory when a natural disaster happens in the so called "fly over states" or deep south. OKC had a terror attack as well, but New Yorkers can't wait to say terrible crap when a tornado kills someone here in Oklahoma.

It so damn typical that you guys can dish it out but sure can't take it.

Samantha, couldn't have said it better myself. OKC experienced something terrible that day and if any of those New Yorkers have seen that picture of little one year old Baylee Almon in that firefighters arms and still wanna say what they went through isn't anything compared to what they did, that's absolutely heartless and ridiculous.

And if any of you had ever stared down the face of an F-5 nearly 2 miles wide like Greensburg KS had to, they'd be singing a different tune.

Wrote the book on cleaning up and moving on? The Midwest does that every stinking year.

Chill Samantha, a couple people say something on the internet and suddenly all NYers are dicks?
C'mon, grow up. NY is the favorite punching bag and bad guy for the rest of the country for 200 years - what the @!$%# did we ever do to you? We deal with everyone else's BS and just brush it off.

Croc - NY gets a hell of a lot more than 2 inches of snow, they get it by the foot just like the rest of New England! And out in the midwest they can just cart that snow away, plus nobody lives in your cities on the weekends. NY never stops and there are multiple mass transit lines that become affected. Does your city have 24hr mass transit to deal with? There is no place to put the snow except into the rivers and they talk about it for weeks because it lingers for weeks. I've seen canyons of snow 10 feet high on either side of the sidewalks and still people make do. Yeah they talk, but its just something to talk about. It ain't bitching. But don't blame NY's character for you having to listen to them talk. You hear it because NY is where the media is. Trust me, people talk about the weather just as much across the whole country.

Now if you want to talk about people who can't deal with snow, head to the South. They close roads and schools when it's cold out and whole cities shut down for a week for a dusting.

Liz - I don't think I heard anyone say OK city was nothing! Where are you people getting this stuff? All I heard was people saying that NYers can't deal with disasters and are gripers. Then someone mentioned 9-11 as proof to the opposite. How you have construed that to mean that OK city can suck eggs is beyond me.

Everyone deals with disasters in this country. Saying that my city deals with disaster doesn't discount anyone else's cities and how they deal. jeez some of you are @!$%#ing sensitive! But feel free to tell us what else sucks about NY and put more words in our mouths.

Because, radagast, I have come across people who have said that OKC was nothing compared to 9/11. Perhaps this wasn't the right situation to bring up my frustration with that, but it does grind my beans, because like Samantha, I have seen how many people from the coasts but the midwest on blast when we go through terrible disasters such as tornadoes and that we don't know anything about what a real disaster is.

I'm sorry for so many of you who have been through the horrors of natural disasters and terror attacks. I hope people can begin to realize that people who experience different types of traumas like disasters or terrorist attacks are not necessarily more or less traumatized than each other. Whether or not the actual event appears "worse" in the media and to a casual observer, to the people actually experiencing it and to those for whom it it personal, it is traumatic. Even being taken hostage in a bank robbery or being mugged can be extremely traumatic for an individual. Some people react better to events like this than other people. Also, different major events mean different things to different people.

I would think that, to someone who has lived in New York, the WTC attacks might be far more important than OKC bombing because you might have known people who were lost, you might have been stuck in Manhattan that day with stunned and tearful onlookers as the towers fell, you might have even been directly involved with the buildings or the cleanup, you might have even been wounded, etc. The WTC attacks also got a lot of attention worldwide and nationwide because of the national significance of the WTC buildings and the huge number of people involved. However, if you grew up in Oklahoma City, the OKC bombing might have been much more traumatic for you because it would have been a lot more personal and you might have known people who were killed and might have been directly involved in the cleanup. I've learned the hard way not to try to compare things like that because one never knows what pain and trauma another person has experienced.

Liz I have 'stared down' a Category 5 Hurricane in my life...Hurricane Hugo, and I have seen a number of others.

My parents substantial home was wrecked by Hugo, My Home was flooded,I had freinds who lost theirs as well. My mom lost her Pet Ducks which seemed to upset her more than the over $500,000 (in 1989 $) in damage and losses to her home. I still have nightmares over that night and I had evacuated 150 miles inland but still saw the hurricane in Charlotte)

I live in NYC now (In fact I moved to NYC a little over a eek after Hugo (In spite of it, not because of it)

THis is why I cried over Katrina, over the Earthquakes in CA, Over Haiti, Over the Tsunamis, OK City and 9/11 (where I lost three friends)

I promise you those people who saw that Tornado today had true fear in them, especially any kids. I did not know there was a 'my disaster' competition going on.

I do see quite a number of nasty posts on here today where the cretins wish it had destroyed homes buildings and killed people. Referring to them as Libbys, Rappers, etc.

People in Kansas know how to deal with Tornadoes, they have seen many. People in Charleston and coastal SC know how to deal with Hurricanes, they/we have seen many. You cannot say that about people in Queens/Brooklyn.

And Liz try smelling the burning air and burning bodies of your friends for a month. I will never , ever for get that. 3000 times over

Frank, you did not get the point of my statement, did you? I never was trying to cheapen what people went through today, or back then on 9/11.

What I am trying to say is that I hate it when people cheapen what does happen out in the Midwest and treat us like we've never experienced anything terrible out here. It's like we're second-class citizens because we don't live in a big urban area. And did I ever say anything about hurricanes not being horrific storms? I have family in the Biloxi area, I would never try to say that people that go through hurricanes haven't had something horrible happen. It does, however, make me angry when they have ample warning and don't get out. But I also get angry when people here in the midwest don't heed tornado warnings even though they've had 30 minutes to get to shelter, but that's another story.

On many tornado stories posted online and tornado videos on Youtube, people from NY and such make jokes or say that what people have gone through in those storms is "nothing" and that it's our fault because we choose to live here. And then people have said that the OKC bombing wasn't anything compared to 9/11. Loss of life is loss of life I don't care where it happens, it's heck for the families and friends that go through that.

And though I may not have had to smell the burning bodies of my friends for a month, I did have to see my brother come home from the war mangled after he somehow managed to survive an explosion that should have killed him.

My point was that no one should ever, EVER cheapen what someone else goes through in a disaster. What I meant by staring down the face of an F-5 was simply that you can't tell someone that what they've gone through is nothing just because you haven't experienced it before. Frank, I was in no way trying to cheapen anything. I feel bad for the people that were affected by the storm because it's so rare up there.

And also back at radagast, I never said NY sucks, I have friends who have now moved there and live on the western side of the state. I've visited and loved it. But it did make me a little upset when their native NY friends would make light of people and the situations that happen out in the Midwest. Just as I am upset at the people who are saying what NY went through today is nothing.

A little weather ass kicking is not a bad thing. Just proof that for all we try to influence nature whether bad or good, nature shows it's might and humbles the insignificant parasites residing on it's surface.

Popeye............ Nope...... AND don't really care to say that.............. I grew up in up-state N.Y. ( in the 70's and 80's ) .............. We, would have Tornados every-once in awhile...... The proper term, you are looking for is CALLED " MOTHER NATURE "....................

Reading comments here one needs to wonder if some people have any idea what a tornado is. In congested areas with population in the millions it is a very serious thing and not a joke at all.

I don't live in NY but sure hope this one doesn't develop into a real one.

I'm totally shocked about reading about tornados in Queens, N.Y. and tornadoes almost happening in Sheepshead Bay, where, in my 20s, I had lived with relatives. Never in a million years did I ever think New York and its suburbs would ever have tornadoes.

I moved from Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, in 1976 to Los Angeles, CA, and have never been back to New York. I'm so glad I now live in California, but our problems here are "earthquakes."

Well, I lived in Tennessee for most of my life and we had to deal with both tornadoes AND earthquakes. Thankfully, the last really bad one was many years before my time but if it can make a lake (Reelfoot Lake), then I don't want to know what else it could make.

There hasn't been looting in NY since '76. We've had blackouts and terrorist attacks a plenty since then and still no looting. These areas are actually pretty neighborly. But yeah NYPD would shoot you.

New York City has a low crime rate comparatively.

Well, Old Timer, New Yorkers have seen 9/11. I'd say that's something to write home about.

Now we're comparing the disaster of 9/11 which was perpetrated by fanatical insane PEOPLE to TORNADOS? Moron CONSERVATIVES. Get out of your alternate universe got just ONCE in your pathetic lives and understand these two things have NO correlation-NONE.

You left out an "R" doofus. This whole theory has been throughly debunked.

You know you can literally drive right up to the front door and go talk to the grad students working there? Pretty low security for an evil government lab controlling the weather and creating earthquakes.

Actually, it's called HAARP and I'm not sure if it's that or nature itself being thrown into disarray because of our evil ways, Greg-2055249.

I was wondering when the tired "HAARP" theory would be trotted out, yet again. Oh and the "mans Evil ways" theory in the same grouping. Wow, the armadillo hats are out in force today. Why don't some of you do a little research in the fossil record of this rock? All this has happened many, many times before and will as long as the earth has an atmosphere and remains out of balance in it's axial rotation. It drifts closer to and further from the sun in cycles, it also wobbles on it's axis.

Some call it God, others insist it's science. The fact is it's imperfection in balance and orbit and has been for the last 13 billion years. Oh, and climate change is cyclic, always has been and always will be until the planet is destroyed, which at some point it will be. And all this has gone on long before man even walked to earth. When will it happen, it's like most things man professes to know. We don't know is the simple answer.
