Obama motorcade police officer hit by pickup truck, killed

A police officer who was part of President Obama's motorcade during a campaign stop in Florida died after he was hit by a pickup truck. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A motorcycle police officer who was part of President Barack Obama's motorcade to a campaign event in Florida died Sunday after being struck by a pickup truck.

Officer Bruce St. Laurent, 55, was a 20-year veteran of the Jupiter Police Department and one of several officers from agencies across Palm Beach County helping with security for the president's visit.

He was ahead of the motorcade on Interstate 95 preparing to shut down the highway as part of a rolling roadblock when he was hit by the Ford F-150, Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said. He was taken to nearby St. Mary's Medical Center and was pronounced dead.

Jupiter Police spokesman Sgt. Scott Pascarella, told The Palm Beach Post he trained St. Laurent when he was a new officer.

"We didn't lose a co-worker. We lost a friend," Pascarella told the newspaper. "He would do anything for anyone."

Barbera said an investigation was ongoing and no charges had yet been filed against the driver.

Motorcycle cop for 18 years
Obama was on the second day of a bus tour through the key swing state and made a campaign appearance Sunday at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said the president didn't see the accident, but he was notified of the officer's death and said "our thoughts and prayers are with the officer's family."

Carney said an ambulance that was part of the motorcade was released immediately to assist on the scene.

The Post also reported that St. Laurent had been a motorcycle officer for 18 years and in 2005 he earned a Distinguished Service Award by the Traffic Safety Committee of the Palm Beaches.

The newspaper reported that tn 2001, he was injured when a vehicle he was chasing suddenly stopped and he rammed into it. The two occupants were later arrested, one on a charge of driving with a revoked license and the other for having an outstanding warrant for reckless driving.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The officer, if this is correct, hit the vehicle, not was hit, and in most instances, if the officer hit, then he would be at fault for failing to stop within safe distance. (unless there was a second vehicle involved.) And, the driver being ticketed, but since when do they ask for driver's licenses of the passangers, or is that just because there was an accident? and the 20 and 18 year thing....20 year cop, 18 years on motorcycle? Confusing. He is dead, He lost his life during the performance of his job. That is sad.

Someone joked that it was Obama's fault. Well, my question is, where would this officer have been had Obama not be in town? Doing the same thing, or at home with his family?

Last weekend we got quite an air show, with fighter jets going pretty close to our home their first circle round, then they flew for a half hour circling. Here we thought it was part of an air show at one of the local airports. No, Obama again. Some guy flys from one town to ours apparently every week, and didn't do a flight plan, so jets were scrambled. The plane flew up, and down- a 25ish mile drive by car, and probably 5 minutes by air. He'd probably landed before the scramble. We're in the next state of where Obama was making his pit stop. As much as his face is plastered all over the internet and nausiatingly so, apparently we didn't know that he was going to be in Toledo, 35 miles away, and the guy further up the road probably didn't either. (the guy in the plane is probably in big doodoo for not filing a flight plan. We have lots of weekend flyers, it's beautiful country here).

Ran into the back of the vechicle in 2001 in a separate accident. Wasn't chasing anyone this time. There is nothing confusing about the 20 yr 18 yr thing. You don't start out as a motorcycle cop anymore than you start out as mounted patrol.

Zathrose Obama is as quilty of this cop's death as Romney is for the woman that died of cancer seven years after her plant closed.

Romney did not want the woman to get health insurance and supports a system where she can't buy it, she couldn't get helath care so she died. Obama never wanted this cop to die. See the difference?

Nice try koolaide drinker but neither is responsible for either death. The woman had seven years to get health insurance and chose not to do so. Romney didn't stop her from buying it. Romney isn't stopping anyone else from buying it. The cop had a choice to pay attention, keep a safe distance, and stop before hitting the truck. Obama didn't force his reckless behavior. It's called personal responsibility and setting personal priorities.....probably something you and your lik are not familiar with.

it is SOOOO sad that clinton's talk was not as SHORT and to the point as EASTWOOD's....
WE hired you to do a job, you failed, now it is time to replace you!!!
blame stupid Bush.. Clinton supported the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, a law dating back to the Great Depression that separated banking from high-risk financial speculation. Robert Rubin, who had been Clinton's first treasury secretary, helped broker the final deal on Capitol Hill that enabled the repeal legislation to pass. Some financial historians say the repeal of the law paved the way for banks to invest in risky investments like mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations that played a role in the 2008 financial meltdown.

hOWEVER this is sad and condolences to the officer's family!!

Yes, it was a mistake to repeal Glass-Steagal. We all saw how well that worked. Given this, it would be sheer stupidity to repeal Dodd-Frank, like Romney proposes.

That said, I don't think this was the point of this article.

borderjoe, you can't accuse the democrats of being socialists and deregulation at the same time and expect people to take you seriously. You do realize that deregulation is the cornerstone of the republican view on economic issues, right? The democrats might have repealed Glass-Steagall, but it was just as a bargaining chip - it isn't in the forefront of their economic philosophy, and they weren't the ones pushing for it. What you are saying is basically like saying "the guy who promised to cure cancer fell short on his promise so we should vote for cancer next time round".

Wouldn't it make sense to have something like PBSC (Political Bull @!$%# Channel) so these schmucks can share equal air time to tell their lies? Think of all the resources we would save. Political contributions beyond what is necessary to pay for air time would not be needed. I know.....dumb idea, but it might inspire a little integrity and wouldn't that be nice for a change.

My heart aches for Officer St. Laurent's friends and family. This is such a tragedy.

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but it seems like there were a few other officers killed while driving motorcycles in motorcade processions over the past few years. I've never ridden in such a formation, but it seems like driving closely and in line with others would hinder your line of sight and probably force a division of attention.

Any way you look at it, it's so heartbreaking.

Never know, he might have been an okay guy, but that's rare when it comes to cops in most folks experience including mine. I did encounter some last evening who were walking a good walk. I let them know they were doing well and told them so.

Maybe, but the #$@%stick who hit the officer wasn't part of the motorcade.

Of course not, but it would hinder the officer's ability to evade. The motorcade itself can distract surrounding drivers as well. Any time anyone's attention is not fully focused on operating their motor vehicle, bad things can and will happen.

Since the motorcycles are generally in the lead, they are the first line of defense, which means they are also trying to look everywhere at once. I understand that motorcycles give a lot more maneuverability and are good as scout vehicles, but not in traffic when other drivers are a constant hazard. I see why they do it, but in traffic, I think they need to change it up a bit so that the lead vehicle has passenger spotters, taking the brunt of the burden off the motorcyclists who have to drive and spot.

If I remember correctly, one of the officers riding a motorcycle in a previous motorcade death in Dallas just glanced off a curb. One tiny mistake and someone is dead. It's horrible. There has to be a better way.

I believe Disabled was referring to the part where this officer was NOT part of the motorcade, which you would know if you HAD read the article, hence his query. There were no "close quarters" in his instance so nothing to hinder his line of sight. Even when rushing to the scene of an incident with lights and siren, all emergency vehicle drivers MUST STOP before proceeding through a red light to ensure that those who actually DO have the right of way (green light) will yield it to them. Yes, the law requires you to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle, but if you don't see them in time and they have not established the granting of said right of way, they are at fault.

In no way did he say or otherwise imply that he was not concerned for the families of this or any other officer but you are comparing apples to kumquats. Please get a clue.

And Marbles, one can have respect for the OFFICE but not necessarily for the man who holds it. This country was based on freedoms, even if that is to protest something or someone you do not agree with. If you wish to live in a dictatorship where you can be killed or thrown in prison for saying something about the government is not in line with your beliefs, then move to one of the countries where that is the way of life. We prefer to be able to call em like we see em. He has done nothing to earn my respect in the last four years. If I met him, I would address him as Mr President because he holds an office worthy of that respect, even though I personally wouldn't walk across the street to spit on him if he were on fire.

If you husband is or was a 1SG then perhaps you should consider this. More than likely in 25-30 years as an NCO in charge of soldiers, whether in combat or in training exercises, a soldier or two probably died. Either as a result of combat or a training accident. When you husband told you about it, did you accuse him of "killing a soldier"? He probably never told you and it's clear why.

        #5.12 - Mon Sep 10, 2012 6:58 PM EDT

In the 7 years my husband and I have been married he's never lost a soldier, and if he did it wouldn't be his fault, since he's a NCO not a CO, nice deflection though.

My first guess is that you did poorly in school. My theory is based on your inability to read and comprehend basic story facts. If you were to read the article again, you might find that the POTUS and the key components of the motorcade were unaware of this accident due to the fact that the motorcade was not near the accident scene. If you read further, you will find that the ambulance assigned to the motorcade was immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident. I am guessing that you have not served in the military or had direct interaction with this POTUS. I arrived at my conclusion based on your assertion that the POTUS has no heart. When it comes to police, firefighters, and the military of the United States, every POTUS since Washington has cared deeply for those who put their lives on the line everyday, so that you and I can have our own opinion, and the right to express that opinion. So, my opinion is, "You need to be mad at your third grade teacher".

JFK had a motorcade too, for all the good it did him.

And Ray, we don't have to use this officer's death to attack Obama. With what he is doing to this country, he's managing just fine on his own.

Good job on reporting that the pickup truck was a Ford F-150. You did leave out the year and color of the vehicle.

We need tougher truck control laws! We need an assault truck ban! No ordinary citizen needs an F-150. I mean come on.

If this and other Presidents would stop parading through town for re-election speechs and took a copter from on location to another and therefore stay off the streets, we would have less congestion when the KINGS GO ON PARADE and one less (if not more) officer alive and with his family tonight. Bohica, There are a lot of different trucks out there and while a biker being hit by a vehicle is at an extreme disadvantage, the size of the truck IS relavent. There is quite a difference between a Lincoln towncar and a smart car. An Isuzu P'up may not have done as much damage as an F-150. Think, people!

Weird, hope it was a bad cop, obama's fault, amazing compassion or lack of it. I think an investigation is in order to learn if it was an accident or intentional, but other than that the officer should be given great recognition. He obviously was a police officer for 20 years and was distinguished. He was distinguished for being in the motorcade of the president of the US, another high honor. Good thing.

Thats exactly why stupid people like you shouldn't be allowed to vote. lol Find another reason to vote for Romney, maybe vote for him because of the values you like about the candidate. lol NOT because your some retartded individual that is apart of the cult that blames the President for everything just because he's black. Hopefully the pretender in chief will take a few moments from his mainly college campus campaign tour to have a sympathy card auto-penned for the officer's family. Nawwww, what the heck am I thinking? He doesn't have time for that. Unless, of course, the officer happened to be black.

Why are motorcycle cops used for a presidential escort when too often they are killed in traffic accidents? While in Hawaii some time ago, escorting Obama to Air Force One on Hickam AFB, an officer died when his motorcycle crashed. Now another one killed in Florida. Perhaps it is time to ditch the motorcycles for the safety of a larger police cruiser. Don't tell me it can't be done. This is what the Secret Service does, provide security to the President. Doesn't mean Police Officers have to die while doing this. Fix the problem, quit killing Police Officers.

The smaller vehicles are more quickly dismounted and they can navgate through tighter spaces, such as a roadblock. Worst case, they'd become escape pod with pres disguised. Usually, though, in DC they are decoys.

What does it mean to be a good officer? Obama/Bush are responsible for vast amounts of death & destruction. They enslave people and countries, pollute. They may be good leaders to you, but to me they are horrible examples of humanity and nobody should be placing them on pedestals, even cops. That was a dark motorcloud, led by disposable meat puppets.

Officer hit by truck and dies!

Nothing about how it happened or the driver of the truck, but only about the officer.

This article reads more like an obituary than a news article.

I am sorry for the loss of life, and I hope his family finds the comfort they need in such a difficult time.

The jails are so full of the druggies here that they almost always kick them to the streets again after a couple of months.

They drive their cars like maniacs because the Republicans got rid of vehicle inspections, where registrations, insurance, etc were checked.

And you are right, if this guy was sober, or not high it would be a miracle.

History!....And who in the world would drive an F-150 from Illinois to Florida on vacation.......Half the people from the north still have their "upstate" registration on their vehicles because it cost a fortune to get the title and registration changed to "Florida"......My neighbor has his Penna plate on his vehicle and has lived in this state for over ten years....He uses his sisters address.

Florida in general is pretty unregulated, and things that you would never get away with in the North, is ignored here.....A friend recently moved here from New York and had 3 DUIs on his record there.....Florida never checked New York for his record......He now has a FL drivers license and it is clean.......And the list goes on and on.

History: FREEDOM is an illusion......A prime example is the "lower taxes" example.......On my modest $78,000 home I pay only a few hundred dollars property tax, BUT $6,000 a years to insure it.

My son lives in Richmond VA and pays a few thousand in taxes on his $310,000 home, but only pay a few hundred in in insurance.......And HE gets to deduct his interest payment.

One mans concept of freedom is an others mans prison.

But I can appreciate your perspective....

I wonder why oblamer isn't turning this into his usual grab for a photo-op by running to the family with his condolences like he has with other, more popular tragedies (like the theatre shooting, etc.)...he's despicable.

If Obama was in Washington DC doing his job the cop would still be alive.

I imagine Obama will blame Bush for this too.

Getting the taxpayers to foot the bill for campaign expenses is Obama's best tool.

History? Name me ONE President that was running for reelection in the last 40 years who has NOT had the advantage of the position of president and used it when campaigning?

I'm going to bet and I would probably win that you had no issue with Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton (well maybe Clinton) Bush 2 doing the exact same thing. So is it that ALL Presidents have used the tax payers money for travel or is it just that this BLACK one has? Come on show us your stripes.

Thank you. Finally, a moment of clarity.

Condolences and sympathy to the family of the policeofficer. Get out of the hate for just a little while. Plenty of time for invective later.

Oh, and by the way Jeffrey, a little research will show you that an officer died in Albuquerque during a Bush motorcade, this is not the first time but we wish it were the last. Good ol' Republicans, no sympathy and no real information.

Hearts go out to the cop's family.

Hello Tired..As a true racist, and Democrat, you have brought color into the discussion. Agreed, all president's use tax payer money for re-election. My point exactly. The incummbent has the advantage of the bully pulpit. Both Democrat and Republican have abused the system. The money being spent during this election is criminal! Why would anyone, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian....... spend billions of dollars for a $200,000 a yr. job? Neither of these two liars will improve our lives and it is your obvious ignorance that makes you assume I am a Republican. I'm somewhere between Libertarian and Anarchist and that fact alone frieghten's liberals and conservatives whether they are black or not!

Wow. I am a Democrat. Guess I forgot to check my voter registration. You know that one that says NO PARTY AFFILIATION, INDEPENDENT!!!! Thanks for that update a$$hat. No you started it with "Who's paying for this" which is usually the beginning of the diatribe about how this President is "wasting" the tax payers money. But as usual when called out on the carpet, your ilk go straight for the "color". I asked you a question and that was did you have a problem with the others? Well did YOU??? I would bet that is a big old NO. so the only thing left that is different from those Presidents is the obvious. I just find it so amusing that because I had the NERVE to ask the question that I became a Democrat and a racist. Like I said, show us your stripes, and you have done a wonderful job of that. Thanks!!
