One theory is that the odor from a massive fish die-off in the Salton Sea, a lake about 75 miles west of San Diego, was blown to the Pacific coastline due to stormy weather. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.
A strong smell of rotten eggs wafted through far-flung parts of Southern California Monday morning, disturbing children at school in the Moreno Valley and wrinkling noses as far away as the Simi and San Fernando Valleys.
The Air Quality Management District has been investigating the smell, which has prompted many residents to call 911.
There has been considerable speculation that the odor is coming from a fish die-off at the Salton Sea near Indio.
But Andrew Schlange, interim general manager of the Salton Sea Authority, told NBC4 that it is not yet clear whether the inland sea is the culprit.
"We are in the process of trying to track it down," Schlange said. It would be unusual, he said, for a fish die-off to cause odors so far from the Salton Sea.
The smell may not be coming from the Salton Sea at all, he said. Or if it is from the Salton Sea, there could be other reasons for it. For example, Schlange said, high winds that ripped through the area last night might have disturbed still water underneath the surface, bringing up a foul odor.
Emergency personnel at the Los Angeles Fire Department were also trying to track down the smell. But by mid-morning, little information was available, spokesman Brian Humphrey said.
"LAFD is not aware of any specific hazard associated with the odor," Humphrey said in a fire department email alert.

The odor "has been sense across vast expanses of Southern California since early this morning," he wrote.
At Rainbow Ridge Elementary School in Moreno Valley, the smell was particularly bad at about 7:15 a.m. Monday, Kymberlee Henry-Davis said in an email to NBC4.
"All of the children were holding their noses," Henry-Davis wrote. "I even saw a child vomiting."

It is George Bush's "fault".
Sulfur escaping from a fault, or underground source emitting gases or minerals. There is I am sure a perfectly logical explanation.
That nasty, rotten-egg smell is called Nancy Pelosi!!!

There's a town here that has smelled "mercaptan" for yrs. The gas Company injects it into natural gas in order to smell it. The Gas people "KNOW" they're to blame, but that's where it stops. Gas Company's have the money to just sit and wait people out.
Maybe the smell Is coming from all the communist Obammy (__*__) .

I doubt that nobody knows where this is coming from. Somebody or many somebodies know where this smell is coming from but they just aren't telling. Rotten fish does not smell like rotten eggs. Sulphur is in the mix somewhere.

How awsome would it be if Southern Cal. fell into the sea and some how formed a huge river of molten lava between us and mexico.................ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh we can only dream. No more illegals flowing over the border, no more drugs coming over the border by the sh!t load. Then the corrupt mexican gov. would have to look after their own turds they call citizens. Ha.

The odor of rotten eggs is the odor of low concentrations of Hydrogen Sulfide Gas, lethal at higher concentrations. I do recall when I lived in Venice,Ca. we would drive by the El Segundo Tank Battery and you would get that same odor, more so on hotter days.
I was in Upland. That smell was rank! It made me sick. It stuck around for hours. Yorba Linda in the OC has had quite a few quakes lately around 4.+. That's So. Cal for you, shakin' and bakin'. Looks like the Volcano movie may have some truth to it...
In my experience living by a river...Dead fish smells like dead fish and not sulfer! As a person who heats their home with LP Gas, well it has a strong sulfer smell when it leaks and can smell like rotten eggs. That smell is added intentionally to the gas so a homeowner knows to get the heck out of there if you smell it. In California it wouldn't suprise me either if the smell were comming up from the ground. Hopefully not the sign of something bad about to happen. Also in this day and age with all the threats we face from terrorist..it probably quite unsettling to have strange and undetermined sources of unknown stench filling your neighborhood.

Back in July of 2011, San Francisco also experienced a rotten egg smell. It was determined at the time the smell was from the Fukushima nuclear reactors....they were expelling radioactive gases including radioactive sulphur 35.
Over the past few weeks Fukushima nuclear reactors have been covered in smoke. I believe if you tested this air you would find high levels radioactive sulphur 35.
