Thousands gathered Tuesday in New York, suburban Washington and rural Pennsylvania to mark the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, but at the somber day's biggest venue, Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, this year's observance was missing a key feature from years past: politicians' voices.
In a reminder of the global consequences of the attacks, in which nearly 3,000 people were killed by airliners hijacked by Islamist militants, commemorations also were being held abroad. At the Kaia airport in the Afghan capital Kabul, soldiers with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force prayed during a memorial ceremony for the Sept. 11 victims.
The United States and its allies launched the invasion of Afghanistan to oust al-Qaida and its Taliban protectors in retaliation for the 2001 attacks. Nearly eleven years later, troops are still fighting there in what has become America's longest war.
President Barack Obama has pledged to end the main U.S. combat role in Afghanistan by the end of 2014, but current plans call for some thousands of U.S. troops to remain long after that to train Afghans and hunt terrorists. Since 2001, more than 2,000 American troops have been killed in Afghanistan.
In search of 'more intimate' commemorations
In previous years, politicians including presidents, state governors and New York City mayors have participated in the reading of the names, or have read from the Bible or recited passages from literature, at Ground Zero commemoration ceremonies.

This year, only the families of the more than 2,750 who were killed when militant Islamist hijackers crashed two jetliners into the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, causing their collapse, appeared on the podium to read their names.
To Charles G. Wolf, it's a fitting transition.
"We've gone past that deep, collective public grief," says Wolf, whose wife, Katherine, was killed at the trade center. "And the fact that the politicians will not be involved, to me, makes it more intimate, for the families. ... That's the way that it can be now."
Fewer families attended the ceremonies this year, and some cities canceled their remembrances altogether.
The president and first lady observe a moment of silence on the White House font lawn in honor of the September 11 attacks.
"I feel much more relaxed" this year, said Jane Pollicino, who came to Ground Zero Tuesday morning to remember her husband, who was killed at the trade center. "After the ninth anniversary, that next day, you started building up to the 10th year. This feels a lot different, in that regard. It's another anniversary that we can commemorate in a calmer way, without that 10-year pressure."
Politicians still attended, but under event rules set down in July by the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, chaired by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, none was to speak or participate in the reading of names.
The point, memorial President Joe Daniels said, was "honoring the victims and their families in a way free of politics" in an election year.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was among the officials attending the New York ceremony this year.

But others said keeping politicians off the rostrum smacked of ... politics.
The move came amid friction between the memorial foundation and the governors of New York and New Jersey over financing for the museum — friction that abruptly subsided Monday, when Bloomberg and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced an agreement that paves the way for finishing the $700 million project "as soon as practicable."
Before the deal, Cuomo, a Democrat, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, had signaled their displeasure by calling on federal officials to give the memorial a financial and technical hand. Some victims' relatives saw the no-politicians anniversary ceremony as retaliation.
"Banning the governors of New York and New Jersey from speaking is the ultimate political decision," said one relatives' group, led by retired Deputy Fire Chief Jim Riches. His firefighter son and namesake was killed responding to the burning World Trade Center.
Spokesmen for Christie and Cuomo said the governors were fine with the memorial organizers' decision.
The restrictions will not extend to politicians at the other remembrances.

At the Pentagon outside of Washington, where more than 180 were killed when a hijacked plane was flown into it, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta spoke in a ceremony that was closed to the public, attended only by victims' families.
Also speaking to the victims’ families, President Barack Obama said that the Sept. 11 victims would be remembered "no matter how many years pass.”
Obama said that the whole country shares their loss.

"Eleven times we have paused in remembrance and reflection, in unity and in purpose," Obama said. "This is never an easy day, but it is especially difficult for all of you, the families of nearly 3,000 innocents who lost their lives."
"But no matter how many years pass, no matter how many times we come together on this hallowed ground, know this: That you will never be alone, your loved ones will never be forgotten. They will endure in the hearts of our nation because through their sacrifice they helped us make the America we are today, an America that has emerged even stronger."
Earlier, the president and first lady Michelle Obama observed the anniversary in a ceremony on the White House's south lawn, and then laid a white floral wreath at the Pentagon, above a concrete slab that said "Sept. 11, 2001 — 9:37 a.m."
Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar delivered remarks in Shanksville, Pa., where 40 passengers aboard United Flight 93 were killed when that plane crashed as they revolted against their hijackers.
The names of 40 crew members and passengers aboard the plane were read beginning at 10:03, the time of the crash, by victims' families and local volunteers who assisted in the aftermath of the attacks. A bell was rung for each of the 40 victims, and a wreath was laid at the Wall of Names honoring the dead.
"How we handle the legacy of these 40 people and what they did, what they kept from happening, is really more of a statement about ourselves, about what we value as a society," said Patrick White, current president of Families of Flight 93. White's cousin, Joey Nacke II, was among the passengers who stormed the cockpit.
U.S. authorities say the al-Qaida hijackers planned to crash that plane into the U.S. Capitol in Washington.
The anniversary led to a brief pause in the presidential campaign as Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney pulled their negative ads and avoided campaign rallies. Romney shook hands with firefighters at Chicago's O'Hare Airport and was flying to Nevada to address the National Guard, whose members deployed after the attacks. His running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, had no scheduled public events.
Caitlin Leavey, who lost her father in the September 11th attacks, speaks out on how she found a way to cope and help other victims of terrorism. WNBC's Erika Tarantal reports.

Here's a political truth every American would do well to remember: the loser of the election for President of the United States of America will leave peacefully. Not gracefully, perhaps, and certainly not quietly; but without military resistance or civil warfare, there will be a peaceful transition of power. Policies may offend us, but there will be no disruption of our daily lives. Try to understand how fortunate that makes you.

The Sept 11th disaster was completely avoidable. The Bush Administration ignored the warnings just like the republicans are ignoring the warnings about Romney. Republicans are narcissists who subscribe to magical thinking. Believing that the truth won't come out and that America and the world will forget their ignorance and treachery is a republican trait.

America is not a country of hate filled jinhadists killing non-believers only for the sin of non-belief. How can anyone remember the horror of 9-11 without hate for the islamists who kill wantonly and only for their brutal, corrupt, illiterate religious culture that disguises itself as a religion? And yet all our 'do-gooders' only wish on this day is to live in peace while the muslims continue to spew hate, violence, the saintly need for jihad from all thier mosques. Jack, do you actually know any Muslims? People who supported and carried out the attacks on 9/11/01 do not represent the religion as a whole. Almost all (yes, almost - there are exceptions in any group of people) of the Muslim people I know are incredibly peaceful people and were very much appalled by the 9/11 attacks.
Memories of that horrific day will slowly become easier to bear. The fear, pain and anger will eventually be lessened. What we can never do is become ambivalent to that historic day. Our children and grandchildren must be reminded of the day we lost our innocence.
I'm glad they resolved the problems regarding the museum. It needs to be a destination for all of us if only to pay our respects to the Americans that perished for no other reason than hate. These common citizens didn't deserve their fate. Our great nation was shocked and saddened by cowards that deserve the ultimate punishment.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to not just those who perished and suffered in those attacks but to all Americans as we have all been affected in some way. Our great nation will survive but we can never forget how precious our freedoms really are.

To those of you who want to blame past presidents for not forseeing the 9/11 attacks, I would like to remind you that many Americans suffer from that malady.....the belief that it has never happened here in the past and therefore will never happen. We Americans, as a people, often have our heads in the sand when we see things happening in other parts of the world and think it will never happen here. If you think the things that are happening in the middle east cannot happen here, you had better wake up. Take the OWS protests for instance. If you think for an instant that there are not loons out there that would deliberately provoke violence at those protests to force police forces to take drastic action to subdue an unruly crowd, you are naive. I'm surprised it has not already been done. What better way to make the government look bad than to force police to fire into a crowd? And that is just the first instance of possibilities that comes to mind. The blame for the devastation that was 9/11 lies firmly with the terrorists. Blaming the victim should never be the American way.

I think it's nice that no politics are involved this year. What a breath of fresh air! Let the politicians be present, and join in a moment of silence, but let the families grieve in peace, not within speeches.
First and foremost, thoughts and prayers to the families of these victims as we come to year 11.
I am going to get heat for this, but as many people are posting to watch what happened on the day of the terroist attacks, they should also educate themselves as to why the Middle east has such disdain for America. I am not in anyway excusing the behaviour, and terrosits are the ones to blame for the attoricity, but don't wash America's hands dry prior to understanding the events that led to this tradgey. They just used the religion as a catalyst to gain more followers.
Please just put your political view aside for this one day. It is a day to remember all those we lost...

This was a very tragic thing and I wish all the victims some true healing. But I must say that I agree with Bart Conner...this was caused by the politicians. I know many still believe this was a terrorist attack but this was planned by our own Government. I don't understand how no one sees this by now. There was so much about this whole thing that didn't make sense....until I watched the conspiracy stories. I believe it was planned.
The most fitting tribute we could ever have for those who died on Sept. 11, 2001 would be to have not one of our military members involved in a war. Sadly, the soonest that could possibly happen will be in 2015.

I do agree that politics don't belong here on this day. Ideally it shouldn't belong on any day of national rememberance (ie, Pearl Harbor Day, Memorial Day, etc.), but that would be asking alot from the extremist believers on both sides, wouldn't it?

Everyone should remember 9/11 and the people who died or were injured. A very tragic day in the lives of Americans. As I think about that day and the 737 that hit the Pentagon I think about the Russian Sukhoi Super jet that crashed may 9, 2012 into the side of a mountain. This plane was a little smaller, was traveling 400mph when it hit. There were no survivors, but there were 12 bodies (out of 47 passengers) recovered. You can see videos of the crash scene. The 737 however appeared to completely disintegrate and pictures one charred body recovered. If your are curious, check out other crashes of 737's and maybe ask your self a few questions. Why does one plane leave little debris while others leave body parts, luggage an airplane parts. The engines on a 737 are 6' in diameter and have titanium fans, which are hard to destroy. Just curious.
First of all, to all the people who lost someone, or were in fact directly impacted by this event, my sincerest sympathies and condolences. Words seem so inadequate.
So What I am hearing you liberal, Anti- Bush, Types say, is that you would prefer to have, at least, Saddam still in power in Iraq, and no hope of creating equal rights for women.? or any one else.? Am I hearing you correctly? Instead of attacking Iraq, you would prefer that women stay subjugated to men, and you say The GOP is waging war against women?
Also, I am hearing that, we should not have attacked Afghanistan, where the Saudi terrorist trained, their base of operations were, and their leader headquartered? And You all blame Bush for missing the "Warning Signs", he was in office less than 8 months!! We might wish to look to Clinton, (who lobbed missiles at, instead of capturing, or just killing Bin Laden), I have yet to see the report on how high Bin Laden was on Bush's priority list.

Hey Farm Boy, your name fits. Those alleged hijackers were in the US for those 8 months, despite warnings of an impending attack and Bush did nothing. A few of the hi jackers, left the country and then returned during that time and Bush did nothing.
We caught Moussaui, the alledged 20th hijacker, taking flying lessons in Wisconsin and the FBI agent in charge begged superiors in Washington for permission to look in his computer and it was denied. Bush did nothing. If they had looked, the plot would have been uncovered and destroyed. Obviously, powers in Washington wanted the plot to go forward.
No one in their right minds would deny permission to look in that computer. No one was reprimanded, which should tell you something. It was an inside job.
As I drove in to work this morning...the clear blue skies reminded me of how the day started 11 years ago.
The entire Nation in shock and disbelief...that shock and disbelief rippled across the world. We grieved for those who lost their lives. We mourned for those who lost their lives desperately trying to save others. We remember those who lost their lives diverting another disaster on the ground by overtaking the hijackers.
11 years later it is the same. We still grieve, mourn and remember. The victims and their families will always be in our prayers.
I want to comment just for the clarification about the whole Obama being a muslim idea that keeps being spread around. Obama a Muslim? Muslims do not support gay marriage, work for a corrupted government, support American troops staying in Muslim countries and killing innocent civilians. Obama is not Muslim at all, for many more reasons than was mentioned. First of all, his dad was not a committed practicing Muslim and died when he was young. Secondly his mother, who raised him most of his life was christian. Obama himself never attended any muslim religious schools nor was in contact with any muslim preacher when he grew up. In fact, Obama is more likely to be a radical christian especially with his own reverend (reverend jeremiah wright) screaming "God damn America". The facts are there, so unless you people have anything real to show for his Radical Muslim beliefs please be quiet. I feel like the only reason that this was propagated was because Obama's Reverend was extreme and in order for christianity not to have a bad face they blame the scapegoat Islam for any extremism or wrongdoing outside or inside the U.S. People can talk all they want against Islam but it keeps increasing in followers since 9/11 so haters will never win. By the way for those rumors on the internet sites like MSN and youtube who claim Obama has or had close ties to radical taliban and al-qaeda network leaders, I would love to see how he would communicate with them when he is being watched 24/7 and how he would ever had even reached presidency with such a record on his back. If doubters out there think there are no radical christian groups look at the American Front and the Hutaree for starters.
While we remember & honor those who died--and those who courageously fought knowing they would die--let's also remember we have been at war since then, and now have 600,000 war heroes who are injured veterans of those wars. And we are still at war.
I realized today what's been making me feel nauseous about the Romney campaign and the Republican Party.
In the entire history of modern civilization, a people at war have always been expected to chip in and help. But when we invaded Iraq, Bush told us to just "keep shopping." No nation ever before cut taxes during war. Romney's acceptance speech made clear to me that war and injured vets are, for him, all a part of business. Indeed, for corporations like Halliburton, war has been vastly successful.
It causes me to wonder whether Romney quietly intends to keep us perpetually at war. Is this why the draft was eliminated? With only 1% of the population actually engaged in this longest war in U.S. history, was this deliberately done so the rest of us would forget we are at war???
The Romney ticket wants to make further tax cuts and decries "Obama's spending," but it's NOT Obama's spending--he's spent less than all presidents back to and including Reagan--it's the cost of these two wars Bush began, finally being put into the federal budget.
The Romney ticket also wants to slash benefits to vets for health care many will need for the rest of their lives. Today, 96% of injured soldiers survive--but need continuous care because many have brain injuries from IEDs, and many more suffer PTSD from return assignments to the arena of war 4, 5, 6, even 7 times--unprecedented in our history.
To my way of thinking, cutting taxes in time of war is not merely unacceptable, but morally wrong. Cutting benefits for injured vets in our volunteer army is also deeply, morally wrong.
I am a patriot; I love my country with all my heart. I'm sure everybody on either side of the political arguments feels the same.
Given that, how can anybody vote for Mr. Romney???

Spoken Like a true liberal, Change the Subject, Ignore the Facts, and Name Call.
So, you are telling me that Bush is directly responsible for the 9-11 attacks. Is this correct? Because you are saying "It was inside job", which means the Bush Administration would be complicit and you are calling me Dumb? I am guessing you are also one of those people who believe Obama was born in Kenya. I would at least speculate the odds are about the same that Bush was in on 9/11 and Obama was born in Kenya. (so, if we find out that Obama was born in Kenya, I guess we'd better try Bush for Treason)
And by your logic then, too, Obama is guilty of gun trafficking (Fast and Furious), maybe we'd better charge him with that as well. Because ATF agents made it clear to their superiors what was going on and were encouraged to continue. Obama did nothing to stop them.
And if you read the article, you can read can't you?, or did someone read it to you? (no wonder you are having trouble, maybe you should get someone else to read to you, someone who actually passed the 3rd grade and not passed by 'merit'.) There was no actionable intelligence, only vague threat of attack. "In the coming weeks or months" and somewhere overseas.
But I will reiterate, Clinton had 5 years, over 60 months (Bush 7.5 months) to find, and neutralize Bin Laden and his cohorts. And I am still wondering why it is not a NATIONAL Priority, to deport ALL illegal aliens?
And I am still hearing that you liberals would have Saddam in power in Iraq, and al-Qaeda and the Taliban in power in Afghanistan.

WWI - The American government warned and forbade Americans from travelling on British ships at that time. Germany publicly stated that any ships suspected of carrying munitions to Britain would be sunk. All warning were publicly given, so the Luisitania was not some sort of surprise. How do you suggest that the goverment was responsible for that . Furthermore, Wilson won re-election on the campaign slogan "He kept us out of war", and then immediately brought us into the war (and it ended less than a year after our involvement).
WW2 - There is more credence to the Pearly Harbor Conspiracy Theories than the 9/11 ones (in my opinion). It is suspicious that the carriers were all out to sea when it happened. What doesn't make sense though, is if we were attacked at Hawaii, whether we were expecting it or not, we would have declared war. Look at history, any attack by a sovereign nation against US soil has been met with swift military force: French & Indian War, American Revolution, War of 1812, War for Texas Independence and ensuing US-Mexican War, etc.
What other examples do you have? Your first one was a huge stretch, your second one had some validity, but is still questionable, and you claim to have more. I would love to know what they are. Here's a REAL example for you. Vietnam: American sentiment was dead set against going to war in Vietnam or escalating it. Washington didn't care and we kept it going for 12 years anyway. Is that your other example? Gulf of Tonkin, where our Navy played battleship with itself? That was probably a military blunder that LBJ (ahem which party was he again?) used as a spin tactic to try and get support from the citizenry, but it didn't work and he didn't care.
I would agree that our government historically has spun the truth or else communicated a convenient theory about events that happened in order to serve a purpose, but to suggest that they had a part in them is just taking it too far. Another example: Battleship Maine in Cuba during Spanish-American War. By freak accident a powder magazine blew up, we didn't have Teddy Roosevelt blowing up Navy Ships to have an excuse to go to war (though he might have considered it).

I seen a building go down that way but only after a professional demolitian crew blew it down with dynomite. The support beams were all cut, and there was no way for anyone to investigate because they had a clean up crew go in right away to destroy any evidence...etc....check out the video's on the 9/11 tragedy. So your position is that the government cut the support beams of the towers and blew them up with dynamite, but covered it up by outsourcing some suicide bombers from Osama to fly planes into them? They also managed to make it look believable by causing just enough damage to the Pentagon to not raise too many eyebrows. You are right about dynamite not being used, because they used nano thermite, which accounts for the tremendously high heat required to melt building steel. There was molten steel in the basement of the towers for a month. No amount of aviation fuel or fuel to power emergecy generators could cause steel to melt into a lava like condition.
The government didn't cut the support beams, they were rigged with the nano thermite, most likely by the Mossad (5 dancing Israelis), which would have taken a month to accomplish. They were doing elevator work in the WTCs for months at night, when there were few around. The buildings, all owed by Silverstein, were insured for billions in the July before the attack.
Bush didn't plan it, he was the useful idiot, who brought all the neocons in to run the Penagon. Imagine staffing the Pentagon with Jewish/Zionist lawyers to plan a war. Carolyn Maloney (D), sponsored The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, which provided medical monitoring to those exposed to toxins at Ground Zero, bolstered treatment at specialized centers for those afflicted by toxins on 9/11 and reopened a compensation fund to provide economic loss to New Yorkers.
Financing: because Republicans pretend to care about the Deficit, Democrats made sure that every penny of the 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was paid for by closing a Tax Loophole on Foreign Corporations. The President is just upholding the Constitution. Religion and government are separate. We have freedom of speech and freedom of religion. This is a secular nation. It is made up of people of different religions. Yes, Christians came here for religious freedom. They came a Quakers, Puritans, etc. Through the years other religions followed Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. This country also contains Atheists and Agnostics.
Dianarose, i do have one correction to make. Quakers and puritans were not thrown out of every country they lived in. They left of their own accord, in search of religious freedom. Only one religion did not have a homeland and were persecuted everywhere they went until they came to America or the State of Israel was formed.
No one is stopping us from believing or in speech. Just want to follow the constitution and keep religion and government separate.

It's very convenient to point out how someone voted "for" or "against" something and spin it into an argument. But let's just be reasonable for a minute here. If the Bill, in its entirety, was "help first responders - Y/N", then you would be totally justified in making your statements. However, part of the reason that nothing ever gets done is all of the pork that gets put into these Bills, and the other part stems from disagreements on how to do it. Are you suggesting that Paul Ryan didn't want to enact a Bill for the benefit of First Responders? I don't think any politician on either side of the aisle feels that way. The disagreements come from how to help them, how to enact the Bill, and what the effects are. Everyone needs to remember this when trying to consider voting records or oppositions to any bill. Think of Obamacare, most of those opposed are not opposed because they don't want to see healthcare reform, they are opposed to the way that it is being reformed. There's a huge difference there. I think most people would like to see affordable health insurance for everyone, but they don't want the government making those decisions for us. I will not digress further there, but you see my point.

The NY Times has an article that reveals how the Bush administration, for many months prior to the 9/11 event, ignored and denigrated warnings from the CIA about plans for a major attack within the country. The neocons preferred to stress the great threat to our country posed by Saddam Hussein and Iraq. Eleven years after the event, let's not forget that nineteen of the hijackers, and Bin Ladem, were Saudis, and that Saudis were rushed out of the country before the FBI could interview them. The Bush family was, and remains, great friends and allies of the Saudi royalty.
Just to let you in on a little well known "secret", the CIA lets the president know about 5 to 6 threats every day of the week. Some are detailed and some are vague, so how would a president know which one to actually react on? It is up to the CIA to determine what is a real threat and what is not.

Helen- We celebrate independence day, memorial day, and veteran's day in rememberance of those who lost their lives serving for their country and the cost of freedom. In case you have been under a rock for the past 11 years, NONE of those individuals killed 11 years ago were serving members of the military, they were mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children, nieces, and nephews simply walking into work and sitting at their desks with their cup of coffee to make an honest days living when their lives were taken. I pray your country never has to understand the importance of remembering a day like today. I for one find comfort that we remember this day 11 years after the fact. It's not about being "not being able to move on", it's about showing that 11 years later we still care. Hiding your grief does NOT make you a "stronger" person or country. Remembering the victims while we rebuild the world trade center and taking a moment to pause makes us stronger. There are 365 days in the year and I think devoting just one of those to the family and friends killed while going about their everyday lives is the least we can do.

When Paul Ryan and other repubs met the night President Obama took office to pledge against any bill that would be positive for Obama at the next election, this killed the unity both parties had in remembering 911. This act Paul Ryan took with other repubs to vote against the bill for years that would help 911 responders now divides the country into the middle class who care and the greedy rich who repubs represent because of their love for money. When these attacks occured I was getting ready for work and could see a television in my mirror. A whole country was glued to televisions with jaws dropped open for days and weeks.

To say that building 7 came down due to office fires and bent steel enough to make it collapse like sand falling from an hour glass completely boggles the mind.

Just before 9/11 this guy takes out a 100 year lease on WTC buildings, two of which were condemned by the port authority for containing asbestos that was more expensive to remove than the buildings were worth (when combined with the electrical upgrade that was also needed).
Destroying the buildings was impossibly expensive because of the asbestos, it would require each floor to be removed individually. Why would he do that? Also, he was so concerned about the buildings that he bought insurance against a terrorist attack. How fortunate because then on 9/11 he claimed for two attacks...pity about the Pennsylvania plane because that was likely aimed at WTC7m allowing him to claim three. Then he admits that that just had to demolish WTC7 anyway cos presumably the recently furnished Office of Emergency Management could had some damning info...not to mentioned how tough it would have been to remove all those pre wired explosives. Did I mentioned yet about the SEC were housed in their too and there was a massive fraud investigation that was lost in the dust?
Did I mention also that Dov Zakheim couldn't account for 2.3 trillion dollars just before 9/11. Fortunately the plane hit the pentagon (probably where the essential missing money paperwork was contained) and people felt so sorry and angry that everyone just forget about this money. I don't think we'll ever truly know why there was no Air Force alert or scranbling of jets to protect the air space that was under attack, especially the air space over the White House and the Pentagon. There are yet a lot of unanswered questions.

TOR - Do you know this for a fact? Or are you just talking out of your a$$? Listen to the FAA/NORAD tapes from that day, it becomes a little bit clearer. It's easy to look back over a decade later and think hey jets were hijacked why did we let this happen? When in real time, it was hard to know what was going on. There was nothing that could have been done to prevent the hit on the WTC from an Air Force perspective. They figured out there was some kind of situation on board and a possible hijacking, but no way to know they were going to crash into the towers. Have to remember, all of this happened relatively quickly. Finding out a plane is hijacked, trying to coordinate with all different agency's. Trying to track the plane especially between different jurisdictions of air traffic control. Jets were scrambled to try and locate the plane that hit the Pentagon but it obviously crashed before. Authorization was given to shoot down any planes heading towards cities and not responding to communication after that. There's a good chance Flight 93 would have been shot down had it kept on it's course towards D.C.and hadn't crashed in PA. As johnny says - communication could have been much better, however it was such an unprecedented event. Really nothing could have been done to prevent the crashes at the WTC. Only happening less than 20 minutes apart, trying to get information on the planes. You act like the second the plane was hijacked, the FAA knew exactly what was going on, the exact situation, and what was going to happen.
NORAD was conducting training exercises on 9/11. The Pentagon was struck over 2 hours after the Twin Towers, yet NORAD did nothing. The general in charge of NORAD just happened to be Jewish. Why was he investigation conducted by a commision composed of politicians led by a Zionist named Zelicow, instaed of by trained scientists and investigators? Bldg 7 fell in a controlled demolition, into it's own footprint in 6.5 seconds, despite never having been hit by a plane. It was hundreds of yards away from the Twin Towers. zorloc - please go look at the PA crash site photos and try to find a body (or even a body part) or really, what you would consider plane wreckage from an airliner that big. Then go read reports of wreckage debris found 6 miles from the crash site - how could that happen if the plane simply crashed in a field?
Go read about golfer Payne Stewart - he had a heart attack and died while in flight and within 12 minutes of his plane being off course, 2 fighters were disbursed and flying along-side.

They could only track the planes with radar and that is difficult to do under the circumstances. People like you that belieif is an inside job amaze me. Whatever the facts are behind this unforgettable tragedy: In remembrance and deepest sympathy for all of those who lost their lives and for all of us who were deeply effected whether through personal relationship or simply witnessing videos of the abomination of terrorism on our land (or anywhere) and against our civilians. Nothing flies over the Pentagon or the White House that a jet is NOT scrambled.....ever! This has been true since there were UFO's filmed hovering over Washington D.C.. Even the smallest private single-engine plane coming close to that air space and the Air Force immediately scrambles fighters.

Remembering all who have died and were injured on that day and since. 9/11 has yet to end. I wish they would read all the names of nearly 3,000 who died that day, more than 6,000 who died in Iraq and Afganistan, and all those who were injured fighting for freedom, and the first-reponders who were injured or since died of their injuries or exposure during the clean-up.

Moments after Romney said he would not speak politically today, he launched a verbal attack on Congress and our president for the bipartisan vote to cut defense spending--which Ryan also supported. The reason 9.11.01 occured was because of the incompotence of the Secretary of Defense whose job it is to keep the President apprised of all military affairs.
Rumsfelds imcompotence was the reason that 9.11.01 happened. If Rumsfeld had any knowledge and what the duties of being the SoD really entailed he would have informed the President that the Taliban and Al Qeada networks were planning a attack.
Now since America had been attacked in 1993 by the same terrorists at the WTC where President Clinton responded in kind any future attacks or hint of attacks by the same group means that Bush could have responded before 9.11.01 took place. But he didn't and 9.11.01 happened.
When the 1st WTC happened those wanting to be president should have kept up on the situation regarding the terrorist networks instead of brushing them under the carpet and forgetting about them.
The Bush administration could have justifiably gone after the terrorist networks in the same that Clinton did by launching cruise missiles at targets whenever intel was provided that the same networks that attacked us were going to attack again.

It was a devastating, horrible day in our history, and we also need to remember the heroes that helped, and who tried to help those trapped inside, and lost their lives, as well as our military who have served afterwards, and before, for that matter. We are very blessed here in America. I have been to less fortunate countries, and I know for a fact that I would not want to live anywhere else, but in America. I have a roof over my head, clothing, food, and it's beautiful here. It's easy to take things for granted, and that is probably why these less developed countries do not understand us. They have nothing, and we have so much here. Yet, so many complain...about ridiculous stuff. If you really don't like it that much, it is that horrible, then move out.
