Cops: Woman kills husband, mistaking him for intruder

NEW ORLEANS -- A 57-year-old New Orleans man was accidentally shot and fatally injured by his wife who mistook him for an intruder, police said Monday.

The shooting occurred about 11 a.m. Monday (noon ET) in the 5800 block of North Claiborne Ave. in the Lower 9th Ward.

Police said the man, named by the Times Picayune newspaper as Charles Williams, died at the hospital.

No charges were immediately filed in the investigation.

The newspaper said the man's 53-year-old wife was not arrested.

The Times Picayune reported that the Orleans Parish district attorney's office is expected to review the case, quoting a news release from a police spokesman, officer Garry Flot.

Williams' daughter said the family was too upset to talk about what happened, the newspaper reported.

Something's not right here. She shot him at 11 A.M. -- not 11 P.M., not 2 in the morning. In the middle of the day. And she was like Annie Oakley -- Little Miss Sure-Shot -- with that gun. Even the police miss their targets and hit innocent bystanders most of the time.

I do find this a little off, 11am?? Does she work the 3rd shift?? Does he work the first?? Bears thinking about we have VERY little information to go on.

My first wife and I had this unfortunate work issue for a while. It's tough..

The number 1 rule on shooting anything.... POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION of the target and what is beyond.

I will not get into the gun in the house rubbish.

We reserve the right to protect ourselves, the police depending on what is going on at that time and day, you could have 1 in minutes, or, it could be an hour.

Boy Scout Motto : BE PREPARED. That's the best advice I ever got......

I call my wife when I am going to be coming in at a weird hour just to make sure this does not happen in my house.

I also use the honey I'm home verbal Que.

The 3 best home defense Items in order

1 a barking dog, over 50 lbs is a plus

2 good locks that are actually locked

3 a good, armed, alarm system.

Both 2 and 3 do no good if they are not implemented...

This will drive away most of the ones just interested in your stuff.

If they are in your house with a dog and alarm going off at them, you need a way to stop them, NOW, and words at this point are going to be useless.

      BE PREPARED...........GET IT???

Are law enforcement officials sure that she is not a former-member of the New York City Police Department? I mean, shooting first then asking questions is a hallmark of the NYPD.

Before reading the story, I envisioned a scenario in which the husband was shot after returning home late in the evening after an otherwise average day at work. However, now I must question how someone could mistake their spouse for an intruder in the middle of the day. The shooting is questionable. I hope they determine whether their was marital discord, or a recent insurance policy put in place. Those seem to be the prime-movers in these spouse-shooting-spouse incidents.

@texas baby and others who go on about gun control = only criminals have guns.

Where do you think criminals get guns? And why can the get so many of them so easily?

And to the people referring to the incidents at the movie theater and that Virginia agricultural school, as I recall the people who walked in with guns and started shooting had acquired them legally.

What could possibly be wrong with gun laws if these guys could get guns legally? And before you tell me they should have been checked more thoroughly, maybe, and so maybe should you, but did any of the people who sold them the guns get charged with anything? No? Then they acquired them legally.

So where do you think criminals get guns? And why can the get so many of them so easily?

Nice one JimD, "that Virginia agricultural school". Hokies around the world are gobbling their heads off.

Ah, for the days of Genghis Khan.Let's pull guns on each other. What better way to insure the peace?

Just because you have a right to own a gun doesn't mean you have an obligation to. The odds of finding yourself in a life threatening situation that you need to shoot your way out of are so rediculously low I just don't see the point of a "home defense" gun.

I own a shotgun for trap shooting, I keep it unloaded and locked with ammo stored in a seperate place. Unless I'm attacked by slow moving zombies its not realistic to try to defend myself with it. That actually comforts me. The risk and subsequent guilt of accidentally shooting someone scares me way more than the risk of becoming a victim of a crime and not having a gun.

Statistically, gun owners, or their loved ones, are more likely to be harmed by their weapons than they ever are to be used against "bad guys." This event is a blatant, and tragic, case in point.

Way to go! Another NRA "Armed Citizen" moment. If the NRA were honest about what really happens, they'd include this alongside all the cherry-picked stories they publish every month in their magazine.

As Ronnie Reagan used to say....."Trust but Verify". Truth or the illusion of truth are often stranger than fiction. Whether pre-meditated murder or carelessness......one victim is still dead, forever. This is a legitimate National story........we all need constant reminding of the dangers of careless people in the hands of guns. America the Violent struggles behind.

The "dangers of people in the hands of guns," is exactly the kind of logic that makes this a debate. By your own admission you blame the gun as if it is a living being capable of evil deeds. Guns don't have hands. Guns are dangerous things, humans are dangerous living beings and have a choice before pulling the trigger. As long as humans are capable of murder, there will be no safe place on earth, guns or no guns.

The sad thing is he was probably coming back home from work unexpectedly, maybe because he felt sick, and if so he should have let his wife know not to be surprised when he arrived. Now he's more than sick. :-(( .

that's called a Texas divorce, works every time ! everyone should have a gun

remember Scrooge, " let's get rid of the surplus population"

guns don't kill people, people do kill people. Tell that to the wife. think she's glad she had that gun?

Mexico has some of the strictest gun laws around. Go figure!
