HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A former professor accused of killing three people and wounding others at the University of Alabama at Huntsville on Feb. 12, 2010, has pleaded guilty to murder, WAFF reported Tuesday.
Amy Bishop, 47, entered the plea at a Madison County Circuit Court in a deal that was expected to result in a sentence of life in prison and avert the death penalty, the Huntsville Times said. Judge Alan Mann had imposed a gag order on both sides until after the trial’s completion, so it was not immediately clear how the plea agreement came about.
Bishop's plea confirmed the facts of the case, the Times reported, citing prosecutors. It said the Harvard-trained biology professor stood up during a faculty meeting and began firing with a 9 mm pistol, killing biology Professors Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson, and Biology Department Chair Gopi Podila, and wounding professors Joseph Leahy and Luis Cruz-Vera and staff assistant Stephanie Monticciolo.
Bishop was captured after attempting to flee, according to the Times. WAFF reported that Bishop will still have a jury trial beginning Sept. 24 as required by Alabama law.
Earlier reports said that Bishop, a mother of four, had recently been denied tenure by the university.

A lethal injection would be better, thus serving two purposes:
1) save money in the long run over the cost of keeping her alive
2) prove there is no sexual discrimination with respect to sentencing. After all, gender discrimination is illegal.

What a waste of money; trying her, and now housing her when a 5 cent piece of lead would have solved the problem.
There should be no "Plea bargain" for someone who is without a doubt, caught red handed, guilty as sin. She should get the death sentence to be carried out within a limit of 2 weeks after trial.
Here is another case of our justice system failing completely. I feel sorry for her family, they didn't do this, but she is the one to blame for her own actions and should get the sentence that should be mandatory.
What does where she graduated from have anything to do with anything?

She got away with killing her own brother...I blame the parents who arranged to have her get off scot free for murdering her own brother...I guess some siblings were more equal than others. Had she been popped in prison for life or executed back when she was a teenager, three people would have lived...I have zero doubt that 10 years or 20 years from now, some very sympathetic parole board will release her as she will act the part of the reformed prisoner in jail. Unfortunately, I agree with you. However, I'm strickly against the death penalty. We have the ability to keep people in prison for life. Yes, it's an expense but that is the price of having a free society. Consider it like taxes. Better that than having our freedoms restricted. I don't believe our government should be in the business of executing its own citizens.

The problem there is with the Death Penalty is not the local state governments. Its the Federal Govt. that pays $20k per Death Row Appeal that is filed on behalf of a Death Row Inmate. There are many on the row who want to die. We just keep on keeping them alive so some lawyer can collect his Appellate fees.

Well the problem with the Death Penalty is that its never used correctly. When you find the person beyond a shadow of a doubt guilty of murder. Then and only then they should be put to death with no appeal. Once the $20k fee for appeals is removed then more of these frivolous appeals will go away. Then the Death Penalty can be used and then it will become a deterrent. Look in Saudi Arabia and other nations where penalties are harsh for the crime. It deters them. We have made it a penalty with no teeth.
Maybe we should do like they do in China. Execute the violator once found guilty and then bill their family for the cost to the State for housing and executing them. That may cause people to become more responsible for their offspring. Look at this lady who killed her brother and her she is today. Killed three more people and she was guilty of murder the first time beyond a shadow of a doubt.

That is not true that's just going to end up getting some innocent people killed for crimes they didn't do there where some people on death row that with evidence where able to appeal there conviction. You never know when new evidence can come in if they are in prison for life you can reverse it and release them and pay compensation if you kill them then they prove they are innocent later then what?

Comparing us with Saudi Arabia? I hope not. Look at all the people Saudi has executed, they are all poor and uneducated without any means. As humans we should aspire to be better than that. And Sword, if someone in your family goes crazy, perhaps mentally ill, and commits murder, do you really want to pay for housing and executing them? That will teach them not to have crazy relatives. What a great deterrent to murder, we might have to pay your room and board in prison! My wife is a tenured full professor at the Univ of Alabama Tuscaloosa campus. She said that since the shootings that in faculty meetings, the people are always studying each other. I suggested setting off a cherry bomb to "release the tension." Thought she was gonna beat me up. LOL

The rest of the world has been completely blind to this and maybe now we can finally have world peace once the word gets out on the key to prevent further killings. Just think if all the countries in history had gone to war--what was it you said, oh "armed, locked and loaded"-- knowing that their "enemy" was "armed, locked and loaded" as well, then no shots would have been fired and no deaths would have occurred. toughluv - maybe we should take all of the elderly people, put them in prison and the prisoners in the retirement/nursing homes.....at least the elderly would get three squares a day and free health care....let the criminals put up with the abuse in nursing homes.
